First US child to ‘die from coronavirus’ was only diagnosed after his death as he ‘did not meet COVID-19 test criteria’

THE FIRST US child to succumb to coronavirus was only diagnosed with the deadly infection after he died as he did not “meet the criteria” for the test, the Sun has learned.

Lancaster, Los Angeles, Mayor Rex Parris said Wednesday that the teenager "did not meet the criteria for public health to OK a test and the only time he was tested was after he died."

LA Mayor Erioc Garcetti also responded to the death, stating overnight: "I was informed by the county that this individual did not have pre-existing conditions. It’s a sober reminder that anybody can die from this disease."

The Sun can report that the minor was a 17-year-old who went to hospital with respiratory problems, but was denied testing.

He then went to Antelope Valley Hospital which is where he ultimately died of septic shock, before he was diagnosed with coronavirus post-mortem.

The Global Sepsis Alliance has stated that COVID-19 can cause sepsis, which can lead to septic shock.

Speaking to Fox 11 on Wednesday, Mayor Rex Pariss said the city has purchased 100,000 coronavirus test kits.

Pariss also advised on social media: "Keep your children home. This is no longer an old people's disease."

Governor of California Gavin Newsom reiterated this sentiment, revealing that half of the cases in the state are individuals between the ages of 18 to 49.

In a statement released overnight, LA County health officials said: "Though early tests indicated a positive result for COVID-19, the case is complex and there may be an alternate explanation for this fatality."

Dr Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County Public Health Director, said: "Each loss we experience in LA County is tragic, and we are sending our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones who've had to endure this tragedy"

Why are they even going to the morgue? Shouldn't they be going from the hospital to the funeral home?
They don't go to the medical examiners office here unless there is some sort of foul play suspected.
Excludeing any dead homeless types that would go to that (I can't remember the name) place that NYC buries all that type of body.
What makes you think there is a funeral home out there that would touch them.?

Nearly half of New York City's coronavirus cases found in adults under 45

A plurality of COVID-19 cases in New York City are among those aged 18 to 44, but severity rates tend to follow global trends when it comes to age and underlying conditions, data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reveals.

Of the 15,597 confirmed as of Tuesday afternoon, 7,094, or 46 percent, were in patients below the 45. In that age group, 9 percent of people with the novel coronavirus have been hospitalized, and there have been five deaths.

All told, the data suggests the city is in line with other countries like Italy, which has reported that the majority of patients experiencing severe cases of COVID-19 are in older age groups, though that certainly doesn't mean younger people aren't at risk. In New York, more than one-fifth of fatalities have occurred in the 45 to 64 range.

One of the historical things well attested to in the 1348 to 1362 "Black Death" was a point was reached where there were so many dead bodies that the powers that be threw them on a horse drawn cart, took them to a big pit rolled the bodies into it, threw some dirt on the corpses and went back for another load. Coronavirus News: New York City sets up temporary morgue amid COVID-19 pandemic

Updated 11 minutes ago
NEW YORK CITY -- Just days after New York leaders ordered people to stay home, authorities mobilized to head off a potential public health disaster Wednesday, the city's emergence as the nation's biggest coronavirus hot spot a warning flare - and perhaps a cautionary tale - for the rest of the country.

A makeshift morgue was set up outside Bellevue Hospital, and the city's police, their ranks dwindling as more fall sick, were told to patrol nearly empty streets to enforce social distancing.

Public health officials hunted down beds and medical equipment and put out a call for more doctors and nurses for fear the number of sick will explode in a matter of weeks, overwhelming hospitals the way the virus did in Italy and Spain. New York University offered to let its medical students graduate early so that they could join the battle.

Worldwide, the death toll climbed past 20,000, according to a running count kept by Johns Hopkins University. The number of dead in the U.S. topped 800, with more than 60,000 infections.

New York State alone accounted for more than 30,000 cases and close to 300 deaths, most of them in New York City.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, again pleading for help in dealing with the coming onslaught, attributed the cluster to the city's role as a gateway to international travelers and the sheer density of its population, with 8.6 million people sharing subways, elevators, apartment buildings and offices.

"Our closeness makes us vulnerable," he said. "But it's true that your greatest weakness is also your greatest strength. And our closeness is what makes us who we are. That is what New York is."

Some public health experts also attributed the city's burgeoning caseload in part to the state's big push to test people.

Troy Tassier, a Fordham University professor who studies economic epidemiology, suggested the increase shows New York would have fared better had it acted sooner to order social distancing.

Nearly 7 million people in the San Francisco area were all but confined to their homes on March 17, and California put all 40 million of its residents under a near-lockdown on March 20.

The order to stay at home in New York State did no go into effect until Sunday evening, March 22, and New York City's 1.1 million-student school system was not closed until March 15, well after other districts had shut down.

After the first positive test came back on March 2 - in a health care worker who had traveled to Iran and secluded herself upon returning - Mayor Bill de Blasio and Cuomo initially cast the disease as a dangerous but manageable threat that the city's muscular hospital system could handle.

The risk to most New Yorkers, they said, was relatively low.

But their message shifted, as it did with many other leaders, who found themselves acting on new information in an uncharted, fast-changing situation.

Tassier said it wasn't too late: "We can still make things better than they would be otherwise."

Some doctors are hoarding medications touted as possible coronavirus treatments by writing prescriptions for themselves and family members, according to pharmacy boards in states across the U.S.

Simply proves that even in times like these, just because an individual is a Doctor, or Nurse, or EMS . . . does not, in and of itself, prove them to be a positive and upstanding citizen or individual. :(

Gov Baker keeping Mass schools closed till May 4

BOSTON (WGGB/WSHM) -- Schools in Massachusetts are going to stay closed longer amid coronavirus concerns.

Gov. Charlie Baker has signed an order Wednesday, issuing all schools and non-emergency daycare programs to remain closed through the end of April, opening no earlier than Monday, May 4.

The governor said it’s important for students to continue their learning at home and acknowledged the difficulty this situation has caused for parents, students, and educators.

Baker said that educational programming will run between noon and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

He also said that emergency child care programs will continue for parents with essential jobs, like first responders, nurses, and grocery store employees.

In terms of grocery stores, Baker announced that reusable bags are now prohibited.

Stores must lift plastic bag bans and cannot charge for plastic or paper bags.

Baker also said it’s important to make sure social distancing is still taking place at grocery stores, making sure customers and employees are staying six feet apart from one another.

Here's the full statement:

"What we’re seeing continues to track the trends across our city, state, and country – with more testing taking place, we’re effectively identifying more positives, which gives us the ability to immediately connect each individual to the care they need, whether in hospital or in isolation.
Tragically, one New Yorker experiencing homelessness succumbed to this virus after several days in the hospital – our hearts go out to this individual’s friends and family.
Another individual completed their isolation and got back on their feet healthy. We remain focused on coordinating with Agency partners, health experts, and providers to keep our clients informed and prepared as we respond together to these realities.”

See Which States and Cities Have Told Residents to Stay at Home
By Sarah Mervosh, Denise Lu and Vanessa SwalesUpdated March 25, 2020

In a matter of days, millions of Americans have been asked to do what might have been unthinkable only a week or two ago: Don’t go to work, don’t go to school, don’t leave the house at all, unless you have to.

The directives to keep people at home to stunt the spread of the coronavirus began in California, and have quickly been adopted across the country. By Wednesday, more than a dozen states and the Navajo Nation had called on their residents to stay at home as much as possible, with many cities and counties joining in.

This means at least 179 million people in 18 states, 31 counties and 13 cities are being urged to stay home.

People can generally still leave their homes for necessities — to go to the grocery store, to go to the doctor and to get fresh air. Still, the changes so fundamentally alter American life that some states, like Texas, have been hesitant to adopt them. A number of states — Kentucky, Maryland and Nevada, for example — have walked up to the line, closing down all non-essential businesses and verbally asking people to be safe at home.

Other leaders described the decision as agonizing but necessary. “We are at war,” Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said.

The result is a patchwork of local and state directives that use a variety of terms, like “shelter in place,” or “safer at home.” But the stunning effect is the same: More than half of all Americans will soon be under instructions to stay at home. See how the orders affect each state in the list below.

There's a list of which states / counties are presently ordered SIP at website and tb2k thread: CORONA - Confirmed American Cases of Coronavirus

The homeless types will be dying by the dozens, and then the hundreds, and then the thousands. They won't be allowed to leave nyc now. Killed in the zone for them. I bet none of the homeless have been tested yet, are still wandering around infecting people. If they are stuffed into shelters it will be a repeat of the nursing homes. 100,000 cases in nyc alone by this Friday I think. :hof:

Idaho governor issues "stay home" order
Idaho Gov. Brad Little has issued a "stay home" order for the state.

Citing confirmed community transmission in the state, Little said that the order is in effect immediately and initially extends for 21 days.

People in the state can still leave home to obtain essential services, but the governor has closed all non-essential businesses and directed restaurants to only delivery or take out options.

Little has also activated elements of the Idaho National Guard to "assist civil authorities and local jurisdictions" with executing the state's coronavirus response.

Little did not specify any specific mission or role for the national guard but did say they are preparing to "stand up a joint task force, if requested." The size and mission could vary.

Coronavirus in NY: 30 people in homeless shelters test positive

By Carl Campanile
March 24, 2020 | 2:35pm | Updated
homeless-coronavirus-91.jpg

The number of homeless individuals in New York City’s crammed shelter system infected with the coronavirus exploded to 30 from just a single case reported last week – with one being referred from the equally stressed public hospital network.

One of the homeless people who tested positive was sent to a shelter by a public hospital because the person exhibited only mild symptoms and was not deemed sick enough to be admitted, a Department of Homeless official said.

The hospital referral was first reported by The City.

Anticipating a massive increase of infected shelter residents, DHS has identified 500 isolated units in the system that can be used to quarantine its clients. These units will be located in facilities separate from the regular homeless population, said spokesman Isaac McGinn.

The 30 COVID-19 cases were identified across 22 shelter locations. The sprawling shelter system serves 58,000 homeless individuals at 450 sites.

Eight of the infected shelter residents were ill enough to be hospitalized, 10 are quarantined in separate locations, seven are “self-isolating” in their own units and five have left the shelter system, McGinn said.

The individual Health and Hospitals case referred to the shelter system did not have a known address, McGinn said.

“As testing increases exponentially and thousands more positive cases are identified statewide, we have identified additional positive cases amongst the New Yorkers experiencing homelessness who we serve. We continue to work closely with our essential not-for-profit provider partners to keep our clients informed and to connect anyone who needs it to medical care or to isolation for monitoring and recovery,” McGinn said.

“Following the lead of our City’s health experts, we are working together across agencies to adapt and respond to this evolving situation in support of our most vulnerable City residents.”

Health and Hospitals had no immediate comment.

The numbers don't include the YENS IF THOUSANDS OF NEW YORK CITY CITIZENS WHO HAVE FLED NYC IN TERROR, ARE NOT GOING TO SELF ISOLATE AT ALL AND ARE SPEWING VIRUS EVERYWHERE THEY GO. Washington National Cathedral donates 5,000 respirator masks discovered in storage
Published 2 hours ago By Caleb Parke | Fox News fair use

The Washington National Cathedral is donating 5,000 respirator masks to two hospitals in the Washington, D.C.-area to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Episcopal Church officials found them in a storage area on the cathedral's crypt level just as more cases have been confirmed in Washington.

After confirming with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that the masks are still safe to use, they immediately packed up 13 boxes with 3,000 masks to deliver to Georgetown University Hospital and nine boxes with 2,000 masks to Children's National.

“In these difficult and trying times, the Cathedral community is doing everything we can to help protect the most vulnerable among us from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic,” the Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of Washington National Cathedral, said in a statement provided to Fox News.

The masks were purchased for clergy over a decade ago following a previous health scare, and the church kept a handful of masks just in case.
The cathedral is also planning a blood drive in partnership with the Red Cross on Friday, to benefit patients and practitioners at local collection sites.

“We have made significant adjustments to our worship programs and made church services available for streaming online, and now we’re prepared to take this additional, proactive step to ensure thousands have access to protection that otherwise may never have been available to them," Hollerith added.

Wonder if those masks were for the cathedral during the H1N1 flu back in 2009. OR-are they actually NCR (national capitol region) stocks cached for an emergency (NCR has a trunked radio cache as well-500 handheld 800mhz units with extra batteries and chargers). The cathedral is in NW Washington so it's possible it's a cache for the residents in the area. In either event, glad they "found" them and are using them.

NYU offers medical students early graduation to become doctors

New York University is offering its senior medical students the option to graduate early and begin working as resident doctors amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“In response to the growing spread of Covid-19, and in response to Governor Cuomo’s directive to get more physicians into the health system more quickly, NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU have agreed to permit early graduation for its medical students, pending approval from the New York State Department of Education, Middle States and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME),” a spokesperson for NYU told CNN in an email.
Senior medical students at NYU received an email about the decision on Tuesday night.
“With the growing spread of Covid-19, our hospitals (are) inundated with patients, and our colleagues on the front lines working extra-long hours, we are still short-staffed in emergency and internal medicine,” the school’s deans said in the email.

NYU administrators are currently gauging student interest with a survey and waiting approval from state and education boards.

Medical schools in Italy and the United Kingdom have already given the option to fast-track students into doctors.
By the numbers: New York has been hit hard by the virus, with over 30,000 cases statewide and 285 deaths.

You have a good point, EMICT. If the doctors doing this are the ones on the front line, then I can't blame them. In fact, I want them to have the best chance to keep themselves healthy so they can treat this virus and all the other regular things like heart disease and accidents.

If they are sitting it out because they do cosmetic surgery, then they are no worse than anyone else going to the Indian chemists and ordering them on line.

India got grief for not sending their anti-malaria drugs to us, but they need them, too. If we can do US first, they get to do India first. Works both ways. Life is hard and sometimes, what's fair is in the gray area. It's not their fault the US has no pharmaceutical companies.

No where in any of my posts have I referred to any "law that says doctors are second-class citizens". I'm afraid your either typing with clouded emotion, or have poor reading abilities.

I don't understand, for the last many YEARS we've been complaining about the differing levels of justice between the pampered politicians and us 'regular folk'. It's a slippery slope once we start justifying anyone's ability to bend/break laws and then simply say, "well, they NEEDED to." or "They are MORE IMPORTANT that you."

We can't have it both ways.
