WAR CHINA THREATENS TO INVADE TAIWAN

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A group of Japanese lawmakers including two former defense ministers met with Taiwan’s president Thursday in a rare high-level visit to discuss regional security.
The delegation, led by lawmaker and former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, said it wanted to reach an agreement with Taiwan on defense issues and prepare for any potential conflict in the region, while also seeking to prevent conflict from breaking out.
“We need to think ahead about what kind of situations could happen, what kind of laws and agreements we should prepare, and what kind of armaments we could use,” he said in prepared remarks at the Presidential Office. “We need to work together to reach consensus on this ahead of anything that could happen.”
Ishiba noted that Japan is also working closely with the U.S. to prevent conflict in the Indo-Pacific, saying the defense allies “had no choice” but to prepare.

Tensions in the region have risen amid increasing assertiveness from China, whose authoritarian ruling Communist Party considers democratic, self-ruling Taiwan its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary.
The group of Japanese lawmakers was welcomed by President Tsai Ing-wen and will also meet with Su Tseng-chang, president of the Executive Yuan, and representatives from Taiwan’s Defense Ministry.
“Safeguarding Taiwan is not only about safeguarding sovereignty. It’s also because on the issue of strategic safety Taiwan is a very critical line of defense of the first island chain,” Tsai said. “We will continue to deepen our cooperation with Japan and other democratic partners to uphold the Indo-Pacific area’s peace and stability.”

Ishiba was accompanied by three other Japanese lawmakers — Yasukazu Hamada, Akihisa Nakashima and Takayuki Shimizu — who are all members of a cross-party national security group that is comprised of many who have served in the defense establishment.
Ishiba said Japan had a responsibility to promote regional security, economic development and rule of law.
“It cannot just be at the level of thought, just words spoken out of one’s mouth. Japan must take on concrete responsibilities in the Asia region,” he said.

Pelosi going to Taiwan - there has to be a back story - not what is being pushed.
Her husband (and her) have Millions of investments with China - it is a major source of their income.
So WHY would she piss off China and risk their investments?
She only takes actions that benefit her - so this "Taiwan Visit" or threat of a visit has to somehow be related to their business dealings in China - IMHO - likely she is doing this to put pressure on China over some new contracts or other related business dealings - She would never bite the hand that is feeding her.

Update(10:22ET): With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi departing for a tour of Asia on Friday - to include Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore - The Washington Post's Josh Rogin says a Taiwan stopover is "expected to happen" during the "early part" of the trip.

Could Pelosi show up in Taipei as soon as Sunday, Monday or Tuesday? Meanwhile, Chinese state media has been busy threatening that "military options" are on the table in response.

So far, Pelosi and her advisers have declined to confirm that she is planning to visit Taiwan. But on Wednesday, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) said that Pelosi invited him to join her in Taiwan, signaling that she still plans to go despite the risk of sparking a major crisis across the Taiwan Strait.

McCaul declined the invitation, and it’s not clear who will be part of Pelosi’s delegation. She also invited Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) and Mark Takano (D-CA), but they haven’t commented on the trip.

Beijing has issued strong warnings over Pelosi’s plans to visit Taiwan, but the potential trip has gained strong bipartisan support from lawmakers in Congress as both Republicans and Democrats are urging her to go.

Biden administration officials have said China will view the trip as a purposeful provocation but maintain that it’s her decision whether or not to visit the island.

During a Q&A following Thursday's Biden-Xi phone call, a senior administration official reiterated, "I’d note that, you know, no trip has been announced. And as we’ve said previously, it’s her decision."

Chinese military analysts have warned that Pelosi visiting Taiwan could spark a conflict between the US and China. Pelosi will be the first house speaker to make the trip since Newt Gingrich did in 1997, but the analysts warn China’s response could be stronger since its military is much stronger today.

Chinese state pundits and media are meanwhile warning that "all options, including military ones" are currently on the table.

China's Army Posts "Get Ready For War!" Message On Social Media, State Mouthpiece Says PLA Has "Right" To Intercept Pelosi's Plane

BY TYLER DURDEN
ZERO HEDGE
FRIDAY, JUL 29, 2022 - 02:08 PM

Update(1408ET): The Chinese government's English language mouthpiece Global Times has grown particularly loud and bellicose in response to Nancy Pelosi's potential trip to the self-ruled island of Taiwan:

"Get ready for war!" read a message posted by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) 80th Group over the US visit to Taiwan, as reported on Friday, July 29. China’s Army’s war message over the potential US visit to Taiwan reportedly generated over 300,000 thumbs-up in just 12 hours, creating "high morale among Chinese soldiers" according to Global Times.

Below: reportedly the message in question appearing on a PLA channel Friday on the popular Chinese social media app Weibo:

1659123083018.png

GT further reminds its audience that, possibly corresponding with a Pelosi Taiwan visit (assuming she goes through with it), the country will celebrate the 95th anniversary of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) military...
The 80th Group Army posted a comment saying, "we must bear in mind the fundamental responsibility of preparing for war and charge on the journey of a strong army." The comment has received 8,000 thumbs-up.

...Ahead of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the PLA on August 1, Xi, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the need for further implementing the strategy of strengthening the armed forces by training competent personnel in the new era, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday.

At the same time, prominent GT pundit and the publication's former editor, Hu Xijin, has claimed the Chinese military "has the right" to block Pelosi's plane and any US fighter jet escorts from Taiwan's airspace (which China claims as its own).

This after he has in past days reported that Beijing considers "all options, including military ones" to be on the table:

China's jingoistic statements echoing from government-affiliated media and commentators has gotten considerable attention of late from American observers as the West speculates on what kind of response Beijing is readying in the scenario that Pelosi actually touches down in Taipei, which could be just days away.

But there is a general feeling that if China does respond aggressively - beyond something like just the usual war drills (snap exercises are occurring now in the South China Sea) - there's little that Washington can do about it, given it would involve simultaneously "confronting" superpowers on two major fronts, considering the spiraling Ukraine situation.

EMERGENCY-China: Intercept Pelosi's aircraft at all costs – Green light even for shooting down! – US Senator: It will be an act of war
Will the US back down?
29/07/2022 - 22:13
War News 24 / 7

The China-US crisis escalates hour by hour as US sources confirm that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is heading for Taiwan.

Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin announced that:

"Diplomatic sources confirm that she is going to go and visit Taiwan at the beginning of her trip within the next few days... By the time he lands, things could change, but he's going to go."

The response was immediate in a way that the US probably did not even expect but fully vindicates WarNews247: An order has been given to intercept Pelosi's aircraft and if it resists and there are engagements with other American aircraft, to be shot down.

Chinese threats have caused an uproar in the US and already several Senators are reacting. Beijing has publicly pledged to use armed force and it is difficult to impossible to back down.

The situation is now at the extreme and it will be interesting to see who will retreat first in this US-China "chicken game". The postponement of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is more likely.

"Intercept Pelosi's aircraft"

A while ago, a Chinese state media echoing positions of the Communist Party of China demanded that the US pick up Pelosi in time or else there will be military action against its aircraft.

It states:

"According to the itinerary of Pelosi's trip to Asia, as reported by the American media, her trip includes Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, and the island of Taiwan was registered as a 'trial'. Many believe that this is a Pelosi bay, which is very likely to fly to the island of Taiwan from Japan and make a sudden visit.

This insidious trick is indeed difficult to predict, but one thing is for sure:

China will take strong steps to respond decisively to deal with all this. It will let the huge danger pelosi poses have an impact on herself. This is not only a firm and clear stance, but will certainly be accompanied by a strong and concrete action plan.

China's response is clear, as always.

"Those who play with fire will perish from it." This was said to Pelosi and the Taiwanese separatist forces that support it.

A White House official called it a metaphor that China tends to use regularly. He has completely misunderstood and misunderstood the substance and weight of this proposal.

Any act of breaking the red line will surely hit the iron wall of China's counterattack. China's repeated public warnings are by no means funny.

Washington must turn to history to see that China has always kept its word.

Regardless of the point of view of international law or international morality, it is legitimate and necessary for China to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity . Today, China's will and ability in this regard is a given. US President Joe Biden reiterated that he adheres to the policy of a united China and does not support the "independence of Taiwan". What kind of behavior is a visit to the island of Taiwan by washington's "No3 official"?

If you come to insult me, I will make you suffer the consequences. This is not China that threatens or intimidates, but protects and defends its basic interests.

It should be pointed out that the current understanding of this serious situation is very inadequate in Washington's political circles and there are some erroneous opinions circulating that mislead public opinion. These politicians and the anti-China media are lighting the flames. On the one hand, they say that if Pelosi really visits the island of Taiwan, it will be the "cutting edge of her political career." On the other hand, if it does not go, it will "give China some kind of victory" and cannot let China decide where it can go.

The point is that Taiwan is the territory of China, not a place where people can come and go at will.

If you come uninvited with malice, of course we have the right and the need to deal with you.

The Pingtan Naval Security Command in Fujian province (ss talks about the Chinese Navy mobilization it reported before WarNews247) issued a navigation warning on Friday, saying that training missions with live fire will take place in waters near the island of Pingtan from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday night. All ships will be denied entry.

Training with real fire means the use of bullets, and those who enter without permission will face the consequences. It is not excluded that in the coming days there will be more exercises with real fire. If necessary, we could also demarcate missile test areas and carry out ballistic tests.

During the sensitive period, the People's Liberation Army will monitor Pelosi's plane in a timely manner.

If it is found that it is flying towards our airspace, PLA fighters could warn, follow, intercept, intervene electronically, force it to land or repel it.

In this process, any consequences (shooting down) may arise and the responsibility will lie entirely with the U.S.

Some people might say, isn't this a move that can spark a war with the U.S.? In this regard, people can refer to the principles and positions of China in the trade war: not to want a trade war, not to be afraid of one, and to have to fight when necessary.

Others say that if Pelosi sneaks into Taiwan via a civilian aircraft, it would be difficult to identify the plane. It's true. However, if she comes and leaves in such a way, we may not be able to make such moves in time, but it will be Pelosi who will bring the embarrassment.

Her move will be unforgettable and one day we will have to reward her.

In a word, we have ways to increase the risk to Pelosi, significantly increase the cost of her visit, and boost the price she has to pay. Let Pelosi deeply realize that the island of Taiwan is not a place where she can run wildly.

It should also be stressed that how China responds depends on the degree of provocation by the US and any actions of the PLA are defensive. We protect our country and our country and we are on the side of natural justice.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is better prevented in advance by Washington," the Chinese conclude.

Wouldn't it be interesting if China intercepted Pelosi's plane and forced it to land in mainland China, using electronic warfare and even firing warning shots if it does not comply. They could then quarantine them for a period of time under the covid-zero policy.

No sign of Chinese build-up ahead of Nancy Pelosi’s potential Taiwan trip, White House says

  • ‘We’ve seen no physical, tangible indications of anything untoward with respect to Taiwan,’ John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, said
  • Kirby declined to confirm or deny reports that House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is going ahead with a stop in Taiwan during a tour of Asia

The United States has seen no evidence of looming Chinese military activity against Taiwan, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said on Friday when asked about a possible visit to the island by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“(We’ve) seen no physical, tangible indications of anything untoward with respect to Taiwan,” Kirby told reporters. Pelosi has not confirmed a potential trip to Taiwan.
Tensions around Taiwan were a dominant topic on Thursday in a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi warned against playing with fire over Taiwan.

China has been stepping up military activity around Taiwan seeking to pressure the democratically elected government there to accept Chinese sovereignty. Taiwan’s government says only the island’s 23 million people can decide their future, and while it wants peace, it will defend itself if attacked.

Pelosi, who as House speaker is number three in the line of US power hierarchy after Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, signalled on Friday she was going on a trip to Asia.
She did not say she was going to Taiwan.

“I’m very excited, should we go, to the countries that you’ll be hearing about along the way,” she said, after citing the importance of the US-Asia-Pacific relationship.
Fate of US-China ties rests on how Biden handles Pelosi trip

The White House has refused to comment on reports that she will go to Taiwan.
“Where she’s going and what’s she’s going to be doing, that’s for the speaker to talk to,” Kirby told reporters.
Every Saturday

Kirby said US officials have seen bellicose rhetoric from China about a potential trip by Pelosi and said, “there’s no need for that”.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday voiced hope of managing differences over Taiwan with China.
Asked about the trip by Pelosi, Blinken did not comment directly but said Biden made clear in a call on Thursday to Xi that the United States “strongly opposes any unilateral efforts” to change the status quo on Taiwan.

“We have many differences when it comes to Taiwan, but over the past 40-plus years, we have managed those differences and done it in a way that has preserved peace and stability and has allowed the people on Taiwan to flourish,” Blinken said, referring to the period since the US switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

“It would be important as part of our shared responsibility to continue to manage this in a wise way that doesn’t create the prospect for conflict and keeping open lines of communication on this issue,” Blinken said.
“We believe direct communication between the leaders is the most essential aspect of meeting our responsibilities to manage issues as far as Taiwan in the most responsible way possible.”

1) If there is conflict with #Taiwan in August, most likely it won't be full scale war, but what #China would call step 1 of reunification with Taiwan, the taking of Taiwanese islands next to China's coast & in the #SouthChinaSea Taiwan strait waters won't be calm until October.

2) The actual dangerous time for a full Chinese invasion of #Taiwan is October since the Taiwan strait waters are calm at that time of the year, facilitating amphibious operations. Such situation won't happen again until April. Before October, only a limited conflict is likely.

3) In such limited conflict scenario, #China would take the small Taiwanese islands next to China's coast; large garrisons there, but they can't hold. #Taiwan's Pratas Islands (Dongsha) & Tai Ping (Itu Aba) islands in the #SouthChinaSea are easy targets for China.

7) Until recently, #China was not in a rush to take #Taiwan, but the current int. geopolitical situation has changed the calculus. Now everything points to China trying to take Taiwan this year, while war rages in #Ukraine, the US economy deteriorates & while Biden is in office.

8) We had a unipolar world since the end of the cold war, but now #China & #Russia challenge #US hegemony A multipolar world is inevitable, but the transition to it is dangerous. Clashes are happening already & more are expected. #Taiwan is getting coughed up in such transition

9) For #China, taking #Taiwan is not just about Taiwan, the #CCP has bigger goals A) Taking Taiwan breaks the first island chain B) The war likely involving #Japan & #US, the plan is to kick the US from the west Pacific & force Japan to accept de facto hegemony in the region

10) #Japan knows that if #China takes #Taiwan, Okinawa is next. China recently destroyed a mock up of a Japanese AWACS plane with ballistic missiles. It's clear that China plans to hit US & Japanese bases in case of war. China could possibly attack all 3 countries at once.

I have seen dozens of unconfirmed reports that Taiwan has scrambled fighter jets from the Chiayi air base. Seems to be mostly russian and Ukrainian accounts. I have no idea what the source is.

#ALERT | Earlier today, #China rapidly deployed EVEN MORE heavy military equipment – including Multiple Rocket Launchers, to the coastal area closest to #Taiwan. This was NOT a regular drill. This is preparation for a full assault.

Hundreds of "retired" special forces soldiers from #China have arrived in Eastern #Ukraine and signed up to join the #Russia-backed separatist militias of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics.
