it is really hard to believe they would shoot her down. that would mean war straight out.

i'd guess, if they are serious, imposition of a no-fly zone and naval blockade after she leaves. that would still mean war, but at least they wouldn't be firing the first shot.

Even with China Joe I think it would. He wouldnt have a choice in the matter. China needs this war to hide it domestic issues. They will tell him war and the Congress and most of America would tell him war.

EMERGENCY - Green light to the Chinese Army for intervention - THE USA sends the USS Ronald Reagan to Taiwan - M.D. China: "Pelosi will not land..." (vid)
Chinese fighter transfers
27/07/2022 - 20:28
War News 24 / 7
By Vassilis Kapoulas

The U.S. and China are on a tightrope as the Pentagon ordered the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its Battlegroup to head for the Taiwan Strait in preparation for Nancy Pelosi's visit.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued two announcements and one the country's Defense Ministry stressing that the "Army will face the American challenge"!

At the same time, the information about the readiness of the Squadrons of fighters in China is fully confirmed.

The situation is critical, as neither country seems to be receding.

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan rushes

The American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its task force, including a destroyer and a cruiser, set off from Singapore in the northeast to the South China Sea.

China and the United States are strengthening their military power around the Taiwan Strait as tensions rise over the possible visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island.

The US military has not revealed its final destination, but the route will bring the aircraft carrier to the Taiwan Strait if it continues in the same direction. Meanwhile, China is also strengthening its air force in the region.

A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman warned that the People's Liberation Army would "take strong measures" if Pelosi "insists on moving forward."

U.S. officials told the Associated Press that if her visit takes place, the military will increase the movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region. They also said that fighters, ships, surveillance assets and other aircraft are likely to be used to provide overlapping protection rings for Pelosi's flight and arrival in Taiwan.

China is strengthening its forces!

Recent satellite images showed how the PLA is also strengthening its forces in the region, including the expansion of an air base in Fujian, which is located opposite the Taiwan Strait.

The images show that the Longtian air base, from which fighter jets can reach Taipei in seven minutes, is filled with Flanker series fighters – either Russian-made Su-27 or Chinese variants from the J-11 or J-16 series – and special drones made from old J-6 aircraft.

n the event of a conflict with Taiwan, hundreds of unmanned J-6s could be used as bait to crush the air defense system, launch electronic warfare, or act as missiles with a special modification.

Second warning from China

Yesterday and today, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian issued two more warnings to the US.

"China has recently clarified its stance in the U.S., its determination and its strong opposition to any Pelosi visit to Taiwan.

We are ready to meet the American challenge!

Suppose the US side stubbornly clings to its inappropriate behavior, China is committed to taking decisive and powerful measures to ensure its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For all the consequences that will be caused by this, the responsibility will lie solely with the US."

Third warning from China

Reporter's question: A U.S. official said that if Pelosi goes to Taiwan, the Army will increase its forces in the Asia-Pacific region including fighters.

China Foreign Ministry spokesperson's response: You may have missed our briefings in the past few days. We have repeatedly made clear our firm opposition to any visit by the speaker of the US House of Representatives, N.Pelosi, to Taiwan.

If the American side persists and challenges China's red line, it will be faced with decisive countermeasures.

The U.S. will have full responsibility for any serious consequence that may arise.

China Ministry of Defense: We are fully prepared – We will not stand idly by

After the Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that China issued stern warnings to U.S. officials, the baton was taken by the country's Defense Ministry.

"THE PLA will not stand idly by if Pelosi visits the island of Taiwan," the Chinese Defense Ministry warns, stressing that the country's Army is "fully prepared" for all scenarios.

The communication states that:

"China is fully prepared for any eventuality regarding the planned trip of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. If the U.S. persists, the military will not stand idly by and strong measures will be taken to prevent any outside interference and separatist attempts at 'Taiwanese independence'."

Chinese analysts said strong warnings from the Chinese military mean the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is well prepared for all possible challenges if Pelosi visits the island.

Information from China indicates that missile forces have been ordered to proceed with readiness exercises with new missiles that will target any U.S. aircraft carrier and other major warships that may be participating in Pelosi's visit.

Tan Kefei, a spokesman for China's Ministry of National Defense, said that if Pelosi, as number 3 U.S. politician, visits Taiwan, it would be a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint announcements. , and would seriously damage China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the political basis of China-US relations.

It would certainly cause serious damage to bilateral military relations and lead to an escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

China is demanding that the U.S. fulfill its commitment not to support Taiwan's secession and that Pelosi does not visit Taiwan,
Tan said, noting that if the U.S. persists, the Chinese military will not stand idly by and will take strong measures to prevent any outside interference and separatist attempts at "Taiwan's independence." The Chinese Army is determined to preserve national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Tan's observations show that the PLA is fully prepared for all the answers if Pelosi visits the island," said Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert.

The reports describe a scenario where China could send an aircraft to "escort" Pelosi's plane and prevent it from landing in Taiwan, confronting a U.S. military aircraft, a U.S. official said, stressing there is concern.

Hu Xijin, a commentator for the Global Times, said he is waiting to see a PLA aircraft flying alongside Pelosi's plane in the airspace of the island of Taiwan. This will set a big precedent for the PLA where it will patrol over the island, which would be much more important than Pelosi's visit.

Sooner or later, PLA aircraft will enter the airspace over Taiwan in a legitimate and fair move to manifest China's sovereignty over the island. To do this, we need an opportunity that could prompt the international community to better understand that the mainland's movement is natural rather than a provocation. Pelosi's potential visit to the island will lead to significant changes in the situation in the The Taiwanese Strait and the strong reaction of the PLA is in line with the expectations of the international community. The visit will provide the PLA with a good reason to send aircraft over the island, Hu said.

We must make full preparation this time for a showdown with them. If they dare to take a small step, we will take a big step to crack down the arrogance and provocation of the U.S. and the Democratic Party, Hu said.

Xin Qiang, deputy director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, told the Global Times that the U.S. executive department is very concerned that this potential visit will cause a conflict between China and the U.S. or even cause a crisis.

"Pelosi doesn't care that it can wreak havoc in U.S.-China relations, because the executive and military will be forced to take on the consequences and deal with the consequences," he said.

Lü Xiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times that he believes Pelosi has clearly seen that those who instigated her to go to Taiwan are mostly Republicans who only want to create more chaos in the U.S. to be able to make more gains in the midterm elections.

Song, for his part, believes that the Chinese military should declare the entire island of Taiwan as a PLA exercise zone, intercepting all unauthorized planes flying in the zone if Pelosi visits the island.

US Carrier Group Heads Towards Taiwan Ahead Of Potential Pelosi Trip After China Warns Of 'Forceful Response'

BY TYLER DURDEN
ZERO HEDGE
WEDNESDAY, JUL 27, 2022 - 12:30 PM

If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) follows through on her planned trip to Taiwan, the US military will beef up security in case a 'mishap, misstep or misunderstanding' endangers her safety, AP reports.

While the trip is still an uncertainty, officials say that the military would 'increase its movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region,' though they declined to go into further detail - aside from noting that fighter jets, ships, surveillance assets and other military systems would be used 'to provide overlapping rings of protection' for her flight, and any time she spent on the ground.

[O]fficials said this week that a visit to Taiwan by Pelosi — she would be the highest-ranking U.S. elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997 — would go beyond the usual safety precautions for trips to less risky destinations.
Asked about planned military steps to protect Pelosi, D-Calif., in the event of a visit, U.S. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday that discussion of any specific travel is premature. But, he added, “if there’s a decision made that Speaker Pelosi or anyone else is going to travel and they asked for military support, we will do what is necessary to ensure a safe conduct of their visit. And I’ll just leave it at that.” -AP

(Just like Milley's assurance to Trump that "We've got a plan and we've got it covered" in regards to January 6th?)

To that end, the USS Ronald Reagan and its escorts left Singapore on Monday sailing northeast, according to ship tracking information reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group, including a guided missile destroyer and a guided missile cruiser, set out from Singapore on Monday heading northeast towards the South China Sea, according to ship-tracking information provided by Beijing-based think tank the South China Sea Strategic Probing Initiative.

Pelosi's trip comes at a time when China and the West have been engaging in risky "one-on-one" confrontations, as China has been trying to assert sweeping territorial claims over the region. "The incidents have included dangerously close fly-bys that force other pilots to swerve to avoid collisions, or harassment or obstruction of air and ship crews, including with blinding lasers or water cannon," according to the report, which adds that 'dozens' of such maneuvers have occurred in 2022 alone.

China, meanwhile, has long considered self-ruling Taiwan part of its territory, and has repeatedly raised the prospect of taking it by force. The US has maintained informal relations and defense ties with Taiwan.

The beefed up military cover comes after President Joe Biden said last week that Pelosi's trip is "not a good idea right now," and after China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian warned: "If the U.S. insists on going its own way and challenging China’s bottom line, it will surely be met with forceful responses," adding "All ensuing consequences shall be borne by the U.S."

According to Mark Cozad, acting associate director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center at the Rand Corp, the biggest risk for Pelosi's trip is if some Chinese show of force has "gone awry, or some type of accident that comes out of a demonstration of provocative action."

"So it could be an air collision. It could be some sort of missile test, and, again, when you’re doing those types of things, you know, there is always the possibility that something could go wrong."

Cizad also said the US military presence could backfire and further inflame tensions.

"
It is very possible that ... our attempts to deter actually send a much different signal than the one we intend to send," he said, adding "And so you get into ... some sort of an escalatory spiral, where our attempts to deter are actually seen as increasingly provocative and vice versa. And that can be a very dangerous dynamic."

Barry Pavel, director of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council, downplayed the plan.
"Obviously, the White House does not want the speaker to go and I think that’s why you’re getting some of these suggestions," he said, adding "She’s not going to go with an armada."

The Pentagon is prepared to send fighter jets and warships to protect House Speaker Nancy Pelosi if she visits Taiwan, the Associated Press reported Wednesday, amid China's threat to take military action if she goes.
The AP reported, citing unnamed US officials, that the Department of Defense had been developing security plans to keep Pelosi safe should her trip to Taiwan in August go ahead.
The officials said the plans likely involve sending fighter jets, ships, and surveillance assets to protect her on her flights to and out of Taiwan as well as on the ground.
The report comes amid China's repeated warnings that Pelosi not visit the self-ruling island, which it sees as part of China.
Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for China's defense ministry, said on Tuesday that Pelosi's visit would "seriously harm China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously damage the political foundation of China-US relations."
Tan also threatened military action, adding: "If the US insists on taking its own course, the Chinese military will never sit idly by, and it will definitely take strong actions to thwart any external force's interference.
Pelosi was supposed to travel to Taiwan in April but did not end up going because she tested positive for the coronavirus. She has a tentative trip planned for August, the Financial Times reported, but it has not been confirmed.
"I don't ever discuss my travel plans. It's a matter of security," Pelosi told reporters on Wednesday.
China has long claimed that Taiwan — located around 100 miles away from its east coast — is part of the mainland, which Taiwan opposes. China has vocally opposed any recognition of Taiwan as its own country.
In recent months, the country has stepped up its rhetoric and military actions toward Taiwan, with Chinese planes carrying out multiple training exercises near Taiwan's air space.
The US publicly showed support for Taiwan after Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year. Taiwanese leaders have expressed fears that China would do the same in Taiwan.
It is not abnormal to implement additional safety measures for senior leaders who are traveling overseas, but the officials told the AP that Pelosi would receive more security than usual.
The Department of Defense and representatives for Pelosi did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
If Pelosi's trip is confirmed, she would be the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan in over 20 years.

China Holds Snap Military Drills In Response To US Carrier Entering South China Sea

BY TYLER DURDEN
ZERO HEDGE
THURSDAY, JUL 28, 2022 - 12:00 PM

Just as the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which is a nuclear-powered supercarrier, entered the South China Sea on Thursday after making its way from Singapore, China unveiled that will hold military exercises in the same region on Friday and Saturday.

The country's Maritime Safety Administration was cited in state-run Global Times as announcing the new South China Sea naval drills, which also comes as tensions are boiling over a proposed trip to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi next month.

USS Ronald Reagan, Image: US Navy

The drills appear to be a direct response to the USS Ronald Reagan being present in regional waters, given China often holds short-notice exercises in response to what Beijing sees as US naval "provocations". The past days and weeks have already witnessed snap exercises near the Paracel Islands, after two weeks ago the US sailed the USS Benfold destroyer past the China-claimed islands, angering Beijing.

Bloomberg is confirming on Thursday of the USS Reagan, "A US aircraft carrier and strike group have entered the South China Sea as part of what the 7th Fleet said was a scheduled operation amid rising tensions with China over a potential Taiwan visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi."

It entered the disputed waters after "a five-day port call to Singapore, departing Changi Naval Base on Tuesday, the US 7th Fleet said," Bloomberg details further. And more:

The trip follows remarks this week by China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian that Beijing was getting "seriously prepared" for the possibility that Pelosi could visit Taiwan, a self-governing island that China considers part of its territory.

Taiwan is currently holding its own large-scale simulated drills, the annual week-long Han Kuang exercises, which focus on preparing a civil emergency as well as military response to a theoretical Chinese PLA invasion.

"In simulated scenes, a hostile enemy attempts to seize control of a key waterway close to the Taiwanese capital. Attacking from sea and air, the invading forces target the mouth of the Tamsui River on the island’s northern coast – a strategic estuary that provides direct access to the center of Taipei," CNN writes of ongoing exercises. "In response, Taiwan’s military scrambles Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF) jets and tanks, while ground troops detonate explosives to stop the advancement."

Meanwhile, on Thursday morning Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping are holding a much anticipated phone call, their fifth since Biden entered office, where geopolitical flashpoints Taiwan and Ukraine are expected to top the list of things discussed.

At the same time, Chinese state media are running op-eds sounding the alarm that a "major incident" could be imminent in the South China Sea - and that Washington would be solely to blame if it does.

In phone talks, Xi warns Biden not to ‘play with fire’ on Taiwan

AFP
July 28, 2022 12:38 pm
President Joe Biden and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held “candid” phone talks on Thursday, with Xi warning the US leader not to “play with fire” on Taiwan, according to Chinese state media.

The virtual summit lasting over two hours took place as Beijing and Washington increasingly risk open conflict over the self-ruling island, which China considers part of its territory.

“Those who play with fire will eventually get burned,” Xi was quoted as telling Biden in reference to Taiwan, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency — using the same language he had employed when they spoke last November.

“I hope the US side fully understand that,” Xi told Biden.

“The position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan issue is consistent,'” Xi was quoted as saying. “It is the firm will of the over 1.4 billion Chinese people to firmly safeguard China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

While this was Biden’s fifth talk with Xi since becoming president a year and a half ago, it’s getting hard to mask deepening mistrust between the two countries amid a trade war and tensions over Taiwan.

The latest flashpoint is a possible trip by Biden ally and speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to the island, which has its own distinct democratic government.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby had said “tensions over China’s aggressive, coercive behavior in the Indo-Pacific” would be high on the agenda — using the US administration’s term for the Asia-Pacific region.

Although US officials frequently visit Taiwan, separated by a narrow strip of water from the Chinese mainland, Beijing considers a Pelosi trip as a major provocation. She’s second in line to the US presidency and given her position may travel with military transport.

Washington will “bear the consequences” if the trip, which Pelosi has yet to confirm, goes ahead, China warned Wednesday.

General Mark Milley, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, told reporters that if Pelosi asks “for military support, we will do what is necessary to ensure a safe, safe conduct of their business.”

And the dispute around Pelosi is the tip of an iceberg, with US officials fearing that Xi is mulling use of force to impose control over democratic Taiwan.

Once considered unlikely, an invasion, or lesser form of military action, is increasingly seen by China watchers as possible — perhaps even timed to boost Xi’s prestige when he moves later this year into a third term.

Biden’s contradictory comments on whether the United States would defend Taiwan — he said in May that it would, before the White House insisted there was no change in the hands-off “strategic ambiguity” policy — have not helped the tension.

– No face-to-face –

Biden prides himself on a close relationship with Xi going back years but — in large part due to Covid travel restrictions — the two have yet to meet face-to-face since he took office.

According to the White House, Biden’s chief goal is to establish “guardrails” for the two superpowers.

This is meant to ensure that while they sharply disagree on democracy, and are increasingly rivals on the geopolitical stage, they can avoid open conflict.

“He wants to make sure that the lines of communication with President Xi on all the issues, whether they’re issues again that we agree on or issues where we have significant difficulty with — that they can still pick up the phone and talk to one another candidly,” Kirby said.

Where to place the guardrails, however, is challenging amid so many unresolved disputes, including a simmering trade war begun under Donald Trump’s presidency.

Asked whether Biden could lift some of the 25 percent import duties placed on billions of dollars of Chinese products by Trump, Kirby said there was still no decision.

“We do believe… that the tariffs that were put in place by his predecessor were poorly designed. We believe that they’ve increased costs for American families and small businesses, as well as ranchers. And that’s, you know, without actually addressing some of China’s harmful trade practices,” Kirby said.

But “I don’t have any decision to speak to with respect to tariffs by the president. He’s working this out.”
