if the mortality rate

ends up being in the 6% - 10% ratio...might they actually put enough guards on the border to secure it for once? Has anyone ever heard anything like a bird and two swine and two human virus combining before...ever? Is this even a remote possiblity in nature or did it have some help?

answered on another post...

"CDC officials described the virus as having a unique combination of gene segments not seen in people or pigs before. The bug contains human virus, avian virus from North America and pig viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.

Health officials have seen mixes of bird, pig and human virus before, but never such an intercontinental combination with more than one pig virus in the mix."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30386163/

from what I can gather from all the different posts and the experts being quoted...once a virus is able to cross over to human to human transfer, the nature of the virus behavior take over. It begins recombining with the potential to become more deadly as it rolls along and remains that way until all that's left in a population are those which had traits to survive it. Thus you have a population with immunity to it for a number of years until the next generation risks exposure to it anew. If it were the same virus exactly, that new population would probably retain some of the same traits that allowed their ancestors to survive it, but if that virus recombines differently then even those that had immunity from the first exposure, won't be able to recognize it the second time around. It appears that it's possible for this virus to have mutated in nature but it has so many genetic markers they haven't seen anything like it before. And we have Russia saying some terrorists who may have been transporting biological materials to the drug cartel in Mexico have been found full of bullets about the time this whole virus started rolling. Then there is the bit about the man that spent time with Obama, dying of the flu. Did I get everything right? If I don't respond back it was me leaving to get stuff to make that elderberry syrup...yikes.

California confirms seventh case of swine flu, officials tell BNO News:

CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – A seventh case of the swine flu, which has killed up to 69 people in Mexico, has been confirmed in California, officials told BNO News on Saturday. "We just confirmed that this afternoon, a seventh case in California," said Al Lundeen who is a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.

The seventh case is a 35-year-old from Imperial County, which shares the border with Mexico where the disease is also spreading. Lundeen told BNO News that the women first became ill on April 4th and was later hospitalized. She has since recovered.

It was not immediately clear how she got infected but Lundeen said there appears to be no connection with the other swine flu cases in Imperial County.

I agree with Red, it's ridiculous they've not issued travel restrictions, especially air travel and we've not closed our border. Everyone else has.

Nope, there won't be troops, not a chance -- We've the SPP pandemic partnership with Canada and Mexico.

It's way too late to close borders, etc. The flu has been in full sway down there for several weeks. It has already been seeded across the world by travelers. Just think of all the spring break kids who just returned from being in Mexico last week. It is now in Kansas and NY as well as TX and CA - and apparently in the UK as well. Probably other places as well, where it just wasn't recognized before this.

The cat is out of the bag. Now it is all about protection rather than prevention...especially if you (or your loved ones) fall into the critical age group of 20-40. It kills the healthiest with an immune system over-reaction (cytokine storm). So far in the US, nearly all the cases have been individuals who are NOT in that age group, so cases have been milder.

I'd like a better published understanding of the various probable vectors involved in spreadin g this variety of 'A" Influenza. Is it only spread via human-human??

Well snoozin', it's also about resources, supplies/medications/facilities.

There have already been reports of panic buying in Mexico, sold out of masks and flu vaccines -- why do we need to further tax our resources and why does Mexico need to ensure its spread to other countries via airtravel (case in point, the UK cabin crew).

I don't think Mexico had the travel/tourist season it usually does, from spring break to retirees, due to the travel warnings already in place over the violence and drug cartels.

The one and only...
A few minutes ago, CNN reported that PRELIMINARY testing (swabs) of the sick kids at the school in Queens has shown that it is a Type A flu virus. BUT, it has not been sub-typed so it's still not known if it's A/H1N1.

I got that 8 of the 100 (up from 75 now) kids who had the flu outbreak at the NY school have now been confirmed to be this swine flu..that was from the tv news like 15 mins ago appx.

this winter

I had one upper repiratory infection after another...I would fight them with everything I had for about a month and just about when I was ready to go get help from a doctor, it would go away for about two weeks, then wham...I'd get it back. It's been about a month now since I had the last one. I had irritable bowel since I was a kid and then fibromyalgia hit me about 12 years ago. I found out that one could lead to the other and a big part of the problem was that the flora in my gut was compromised, probably from repeated antibiotics when I was young and never having replaced it properly. Years of not having it breaks down your system and you get more and more breakdowns, resulting in things like fibromyalgia or worse. I found a doctor that helped me to build back the proper balance in my system and got rid of both the irritable bowel and the fibromyalgia in the bargin...so that is why antibotics won't be taken by me unless it is life or death...I rely on my immune system and try to ride things out...but this year has been rough and I am NEVER one to get colds and never a chest infection. I'm wondering what's been cooking out there this winter. Anyway, my senses are very alarmed with this flu event.

FL posted a thread on flu preps here: http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/showthread.php?t=330628

I posted an article about this present flu and preps with it -- in addition at the bottom is a post from a doctor (says MD, no way to verify) of the statistics and probable spread.

I want to include that portion here as well:

Predictions are Difficult but Possible

If the current CFR holds at 7% then this is what we can expect;

The CAR for a new strain of type A influenza will be about 50% with another 30% to 40% having asymptomatic infections once the pandemic runs its course.

The virus will be in every country within 30 days of outbreak. Regrettably, we are at 30 days now from the first reported cases that occurred in March. What this means is that very probably this new strain has already made its way around the world.

Given the above assumptions then the expected death number worldwide is:

CAR 50% x CFR 7% x 6 billion = 210,000,000 deaths from the flu directly.

Many more people could die from starvation, civil disorder, and from normally treatable conditions that can not be accommodated by an overwhelmed medical delivery system.

I have written about these factors in detail in The Coming Pandemic Catastrophe available on Amazon.com which I do shamelessly hereby self promote. This book is full of predictions about how a pandemic of this magnitude might play out but does nothing to help people survive it. The Bird Flu Manual is a survival guide and if you can only buy one book, buy that one not The Coming Pandemic Catastrophe.

Good luck and God Bless and keep us all,

Grattan Woodson, MD

Just noticed that ND vouched for the MD, that's good enough for me!

Just keep in mind that the current CFR is almost certainly high. It will probably settle at a much lower percentage. So, the prediction of world-wide deaths will be proportionately inaccurate. It is irresponsible to make any predictions based on the current CFR without that disclaimer.

From Breaking news twitter. A couple of interesting notes about Mexico City.

Mexican officials say they are shutting down the schools until May 6th; say they will set up a TV channel for updating on the outbreak.

Mexican Labor Secretary says no commercial activity will be suspended for now in Mexico City. No travel warnings yet.

New York, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – Governor David A. Paterson has directed the New York State Department of Health (DOH) to activate its infectious disease, epidemiology, laboratory, disaster preparedness and health systems staff to coordinate efforts across the State as eight cases of probable swine influenza (swine flu) were identified in New York City today. Samples from these cases have been sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmatory testing. The CDC is currently the only laboratory that has the capability to confirm swine flu (H1N1). DOH is coordinating with the Nassau and Suffolk County health departments on investigations of additional possible cases on Long Island.

“I want to reassure all New Yorkers that we are taking appropriate measures to address these probable cases of swine flu,” said Governor Paterson. “The New York State Department of Health is working closely with the CDC, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, all local health departments across the State, hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers. Earlier today, we shipped 1,500 treatment courses of Tamiflu to New York City. These will be used to treat any severely ill probable swine flu cases or household contacts of probable cases who have underlying chronic health conditions, placing them at extra risk.”

Much longer version at link.

Do Not Take A Swine Flu Vaccine!
From Patricia Doyle, PhD

I am making a plea to everyone who reads this, please, please DO NOT TAKE ANY VACCINE THAT IS PURPORTED TO 'PREVENT' THIS FLU.

Remember 1976 and the so called Swine Flu outbreak that was purported to be a coming pandemic? It only infected recruits at Ft. Dix. Why? Because I believe that the so called Swine Flu virus infected the recruits due to the vaccines they were given. Whether the government developed the Swine Flu 1976 virus and infected the recruits as a means to test the public to see if people would comply with a call to take vaccination against Swine Flu, or the recruits became infected via contaminated vaccine they were given as part of the recruit regimen, that outbreak was as phony as they come. I was one of the people duped into taking a Swine Flu shot and it made me so sick. I was sick in bed for three months after taking the vaccine.

Do not take seasonal flu vaccine if you are told that it could help prevent this brand new Swine Flu variant. It won't do a thing to prevent this flu. What it will do is serve up new genetic material to the Swine Flu virus that I have dubbed Spanish Flu 2, the Sequel. The Spanish Flu variant will use the gene sequences in the vaccine in humans to develop more of the changes that make the virus more readily infect humans. We do not want to give this virus more human genetic material so that it will infect humans more readily person to person. This is what vaccinated individuals do for pandemic strains.

There is also a safety issue in any experimental vaccine, much like the one in 1976. Some people even feel that such a vaccine for pandemic strain might require more than one vaccination which could actually be a binary set up. The first shot might just add some genetic code that stays dormant in the body until one gets the second vaccine shot which then serves to only cause infection. It could trigger Guillain-barre syndrome, Typhus or some other condition.

An Influenza vaccine does not protect or prevent a person from contracting flu. It is purported to, maybe, prevent some complications of flu and maybe shorten duration. I am not even sure it does that. Personally, I feel the vaccine weakens our immune system and also sickens us due to contaminants in the vaccine. I feel that people can better protect themselves by washing hands often and thoroughly. People should also use protective gloves when out and about during epidemics. Don't be afraid of "looking odd." I would not be ashamed to use a mask and gloves. I see that the Mexicans are using them.

A big problem during a pandemic is that these simple supplies will become extremely scarce awfully quickly. Stock up now. Medical supplies. personal hygene supplies and don't forget fido, or any other pet. Once a pandemic hits, it will be too late to stock up. Water, too.
We may lose clean water and electric power, so be prepared.

So, please, people, DON'T TAKE ANY VACCINES OFFERED. THEY COULD KILL YOU BEFORE ANY VIRUS KILLS YOU.

Pat Doyle

Noted and nodding.

BTW: The doctor is credible, I didn't post it to be alarmist and based on other reads of the doctor since posting, neither did he, it's based on present assumptions and known factors, no doubt those could change -- the point was to prepare for it.

It's the only realistic information I could locate on where we are and are heading -- don't know when we will get around to hearing it from our own, if ever, they've a bad track record in that regard (case in point WHO's meeting of today and similar from the CDC).

So, have a heads-up and be prepared to self-quarantine or not.

The one and only...
My understanding from what I've been reading is that all the cases in the United States so far have been mild..only two even required hospitalization, and that no one here is dying from this so far. They're starting to speculate on why it's hitting Mexico so hard and not us, with ideas rangeing from Mexico's air quality to 'we've just been really lucky so far'.

So while the flu is unquestionably spreading everywhere and uncontained, it's not actually anything more than 'the flu' here in the US so far.

It's a very perplexing and interesting virus.

Mexican states with swine flu outbreaks

By The Associated Press – 1 hour ago

Mexican states identified by health authorities as having confirmed swine flu outbreaks:

_ Mexico City

_ Mexico State

_ Veracruz

_ Oaxaca

_ Baja California

_ San Luis Potosi

Some, including Oaxaca, Mexico City and Baja California, have tourist areas. But authorities have not said where in these states the outbreaks occurred.

What I noticed at Wal-Mart

Going to WM later to get some prep items :shkr: Has anyone here noticed anything unusual shopping ??? Shoppers prepping or anything out of the ordinary??

Our super-store is empty...the aisles are wide (they usually have lots of displays) and lots of the shelves are empty. The fabric department is gutted (I'd heard that others stores had closed theirs, but ours was always busy). Last week, we bought the last 8 (500 round) boxes of .22 ammo and the guy said they had another shipment coming. Tonight, we went back there and half the counter was gone,* just a few bullets remaining. We bought 4 (100 round) boxes and they wouldn't let us come back 10 minute later and buy more (like they did earlier in the week).

I didn't see anyone buying prep stuff, but OTC pain-killers and fever-reducers were reduced in price, so I bought quite a bit of them. That, and allergy medicine. I'll go look for elderberry tincture tomorrow. One of my friends teased about elderberry wine, but I don't think I could drink enough wine to make a difference...of course, I could probably drink enough to not care. :)

*I mean the counter was GONE...like they were taking the guns and ammo department out of the store entirely. There were lots of shotgun shells available, but I'm not sure our shotgun will even shoot...it belonged to my grandfather and I don't think it has been fired since the 1930's.

I'm thinking so far we have been lucky... the last case in Cali they confirmed was a 35 yr old woman she had been in hospital but recovered now... they don't really give many details tho

Do we have Columbia yet?

Colombia has suspected cases - 5 people who have recently returned from Mexico.

This is a machine translation

http://www.vanguardia.com.mx/diario..._contagiadas_con_influenza_en_colombia/340122

Investigate if 5 people are infected with influenza in Colombia 25/Apr/09

Colombian authorities announced today they are studying the health status of five people who show symptoms of swine influenza after visiting Mexico in recent days, official sources reported

Health Secretary of Bogota, Hector Zambrano, said that samples were sent to Atlanta five patients to determine whether or not they are ill with swine flu, which left 20 dead in Mexico, including some 60 deaths that occurred in the country influenza.

"These people came about four or five days in Mexico were presented to institutions (health) saying they have flu symptoms and therefore were notified and are doing an epidemiological monitoring for the presence of this virus," the official .

According to Zambrano, the five people are in their homes and their doctors are monitoring his medical table.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Social Protection, Diego Palacio, said he held a videoconference with the various Secretaries of Health of the country to discuss the situation that occurred in Mexico.

"We need to be an outstanding flu at the moment is to put all the care that no question of where to run away but the doctor treating the person is in your house, not having contact with others," he said.

Meanwhile, the State Agricultural Institute (ICA), explained that the checks have been increased at airports, ports and border crossings. So far no cases have been reported for swine influenza in Colombia.

Our WM has been low and sometimes out of ammo for at least the last 2 months now.

Elderberry wine sounds good to me :spns:

Didn't make it to WM today but will tomorrow. Interesting that OTC meds were reduced. I need to stock on those also.

I also heard they are closing fabric dept.

LOL Granny,

You have to make the tincture, it's elderberries and vodka or everclear (at least 80 proof).

Actually, there have been a lot of discussions about elderberry wine, probably better than nothing.

Eventually we'll all be so drunk we may not care!

If you are wanting to buy the Sambucol syrup

I would get it soon, if this gets worse the sheepal will start to google about it online and the subject of this syrup will suddenly become more mainstream and companies may run out of it.

I just ordered 8oz bottles for 12.59 of the Natures Way brand which is the original Jewish formula, still with the Jewish seal of approval...from vitacost.com There is a company that makes it in France, that's the brand I think CVS carries, and several herbal companies that make their own extract...honeygardens.com is one that looks promising, but I'm sticking with Nature's Way because I've used it before and I know it works.

I have a few bottles left and I've got dried berries (and I ordered more from sfherb.com) but haven't made my own yet...have to make a trip to the store for that vodka...and it will take a bit to extract the good stuff out...so I went ahead and ordered the syrup two day air (cost less than $11.00)because I don't know how much time there might be left if this thing spreads quickly.
