Recreated gene sheds light on lethality of 1918 flu virus

Nov 24, 2004 (CIDRAP News) – By recreating a key surface protein from the 1918 pandemic flu virus and testing its effects in mice, researchers have shown that the protein might have been an important reason for the virus's extraordinary ability to kill.

An international team of researchers recreated hemagglutinin (HA) from the 1918 "Spanish flu" virus and spliced it into recent flu viruses adapted to humans and mice, according to a recent report in Nature. Mice that were exposed to the engineered viruses suffered severe lung infections that resembled those seen in people who died in the 1918 pandemic, according to the report.

"Replacing only one gene is sufficient to make the virus more pathogenic," said senior author Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a virologist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UWM) and the University of Tokyo, in a news release from UWM.

The 1918 flu pandemic killed tens of millions of people around the world. In recent years, researchers have extracted several of the virus's genes from preserved tissue samples from pandemic victims and have sequenced them. HA and neuraminidase (NA), surface proteins that equip flu viruses to enter and leave human cells, are important targets of the body's immune response; changes in their structure can make the virus more dangerous and enable it to infect new species.

What made the 1918 virus so lethal has been a mystery. The report by Kawaoka and colleagues says speculation has focused on living conditions at the end of World War I as well as on properties of the virus itself. The HA and NA of the virus contain no amino acid sequences known to be linked with high virulence, the report says. The researchers therefore sought to test the effects of the 1918 virus HA and NA on the pathogenicity of flu viruses in mice.

To do this, they took three recent influenza A strains (one of which is pathogenic in mice and two of which are not) and replaced their HA and NA genes either with the 1918 versions of both genes or with the 1918 HA gene and an NA gene from a recent strain. They then exposed groups of mice to the engineered viruses or the three natural viruses by intranasal inoculation.

All the viruses containing the 1918 HA gene, including those that in their natural form are harmless to mice, grew quickly in the mice's lungs and eventually killed them, according to the report. Viruses containing both HA and NA from the 1918 virus were no more harmful than those containing the 1918 HA along with NA from a recent strain, which indicated that the 1918 version of NA didn't contribute to viral pathogenicity.

In postmortem examinations, the researchers found signs that infection had spread much deeper into the lungs in mice exposed to viruses containing the 1918 HA gene than in the other mice.

"These highly virulent recombinant viruses expressing the 1918 viral HA could infect the entire lung and induce high levels of macrophage-derived chemokines and cytokines, which resulted in infiltration of inflammatory cells and severe haemorrhage, hallmarks of the illness produced during the original pandemic," the abstract of the report states. Further, the addition of the 1918 HA gene to a virus that is normally pathogenic in mice made the lung lesions "clearly more severe" than those in mice infected with the normal version of the virus.

"Severe lung infection was a hallmark of the illness produced by the original pandemic virus in humans, suggesting a possible, though not conclusive, association between the pandemic virus HA and its pathogenicity in humans, and indicating the need to examine the contribution of the HA to viral pathogenicity in other animal models," the report says.

Kawaoka's group also looked at the ability of 1918 viral HA to recognize the cell-surface receptor molecule preferred by human-adapted flu viruses. Using a "competitive binding assay," the team found that the 1918 HA preferentially recognizes this receptor. Because the 1918 virus is believed to have originated in birds, this finding suggests that the virus must have circulated in humans long enough to develop a preference for the human type of receptor, the article says.

The researchers also report evidence that people who were alive in 1918 still have immunity to the 1918 virus. They examined the neutralizing activity of blood serum samples from people of various ages against viruses with the 1918 HA and NA genes and against more recent human flu viruses. Serum from those who survived the pandemic "showed markedly high activities" against the engineered virus, while samples from younger people had only limited activity against it.

If the 1918 virus reemerged today, "The only group with significant natural protection would be survivors of the 1918 pandemic, who still express high levels of antibodies against an antigen to which they were exposed over 80 years ago, a phenomenon referred to as original antigenic sin," the report says.

Despite their findings, Kawaoka and colleagues say that HA is probably not the sole cause of the virulence of the 1918 virus. "The virulence of influenza virus is probably a polygenic trait, in that ultimately we expect other gene products . . . to be implicated in the phenotype of the 1918 virus," they write.

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, recently concurred that there is more to be learned about what made the 1918 virus so destructive. "It is very clear that there was something about the virulence of this microbe that we don't fully understand," he said in a Nov 15 press briefing on flu research.

Scientists thank villagers for role in flu study
Researchers were allowed to exhume victims of pandemic

BREVIG MISSION - Two white wooden crosses stand unwavering in this wind-scrubbed village at the edge of the Bering Sea, marking a mass grave that holds the remains of dozens of people who died in the pandemic nearly 90 years ago, all but wiping out the community.

A group of scientists visited the grave this week, huddling against biting winds that plunged temperatures to 20 below zero, to commemorate the key role the tiny Inupiat Eskimo village of Brevig Mission played in a groundbreaking study of the 1918 Spanish flu that killed millions around the world.

Before visiting the grave, researchers told villagers gathered at the local school that science could someday gain a better understanding of modern strains of bird flu and the threat it poses to people - and it would be the result of tissue samples preserved in the permafrost here.
This crucial progress was possible only because of the villagers, said retired pathologist Johan Hultin, who exhumed flu victims in 1951 and 1997.

"Without your permission to let me find the right specimen, nothing would have happened," Hultin told the crowd lining the bleachers in the school gymnasium Tuesday. "Thank you so much."
Joining him was Jeffery Taubenberger, a pathologist at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and one of the researchers who helped reconstruct the 1918 flu virus earlier this year.

Taubenberger was studying the remains of World War I soldiers who died in the epidemic. Lung tissue samples from the Inupiat villagers later submitted by Hultin gave scientists missing gene segments.
"What happened in 1918 was one of the worst things that has happened on earth," Taubenberger said. "Nothing can erase the great tragedy of all the people who died. But if we can learn something about the virus, it's a hope that it won't happen again."

The pandemic killed more than 50 million people worldwide, by some estimates. Here, the flu claimed 72 of the 80 villagers in a span of five days. Today about 300 people live in the village, located about 65 miles northwest of Nome.

Hultin was a young microbiology graduate student when he first collected tissue samples in 1951 after approval by tribal leaders. Assisted by colleagues, he hoped to find the deadly strain in the specimens recovered from four bodies, but they failed to find any signs of a live virus.

The turning point came more than four decades later, in 1997, when Hultin learned about Taubenberger's soldier research. Hultin contacted Taubenberger and offered his help to supplement samples of the flu virus found in two of the soldiers.
His source again was the mass grave at Brevig Mission. And once again, village leaders lent their support.

Rita Olanna's grandmother was among the handful of villagers to survive the 1918 flu. She died just two years ago at age 97. Olanna, who was 10 years old when Hultin first launched his study there, said elders then feared that reopening the grave would expose them to the deadly virus.

But as they did decades later, villagers realized the work offered hope for a cure in future epidemics, said Olanna, 64.

"The people were convinced the community would benefit, even if they didn't want their ancestors to be dug up," she said. "This was something that needed to be done."
After four young men in the village helped Hultin reopen the mass grave, he found the condition of his original study subjects had deteriorated. But the remains of a fifth flu victim, an overweight woman, was remarkably intact, probably because she was insulated by a thick layer of fat, Hultin said.

"When I saw her lungs, then I knew there was a virus," he said. "It came to me that here is the answer that will shed some light on the 1918 virus."

The samples completed the scientific puzzle, leading to the first reconstruction of an infectious agent behind a historic pandemic. The work offers proof that the 1918 flu originated in birds, according to researchers, who released their findings in October.

The virus - known by scientists worldwide as the Brevig virus - has been restructured in living form, locked away at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers said.

The study could be crucial in dealing with the current avian flu that's killed dozens of people in Southeast Asia but has yet to mutate like the earlier bug and spread between humans instead of being transmitted to people coming in contact with birds, said George Happ, a University of Alaska Fairbanks research biologist who was among the scientists visiting Brevig Mission on Tuesday.

Happ is working with Taubenberger to monitor migrating birds passing through Alaska, considered by many researchers as a possible entry point for the Asian bird flu.
"It can scare us in the sense that the 1918 flu began spreading between people and that could happen again," Happ said. "There's still a lot more research to be done."

Sure is interesting that this virus has come out of nowhere and apparently has genetic markers from several different strains. Usually you can trace the evolution of a virus as it mutates but this one just 'showed up.' I don't automatically put on the foil hat but this little surprise bears close watching.

(Reuters) - A deadly swine flu never seen before has broken out in Mexico, killing at least 16 people and raising fears of a possible pandemic. World Health Organization officials said the flu has killed about 60 Mexicans.

Here are some facts about the virus and flu viruses in general:

* The World Health Organization has confirmed at least some of the cases are a never-before-seen strain of influenza A virus, carrying the designation H1N1.

* Although it's called swine flu, this new strain is not infecting pigs and has never been seen in pigs. The threat is person to person transmission.

* It is genetically different from the fully human H1N1 seasonal influenza virus that has been circulating globally for the past few years. The new flu virus contains DNA typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses.

* The World Health Organization is concerned but says it is too soon to change the threat level warning for a pandemic-- a global epidemic of a new and dangerous flu.

* When a new strain of flu starts infecting people, and when it acquires the ability to pass from person to person, it can spark a pandemic. The last pandemic was in 1968 and killed about a million people.

* Seven people in the United States have been diagnosed with the new strain. All have recovered, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects more cases.

* Flu viruses mutate constantly, which is why the flu vaccine is changed every year, and they can swap DNA in a process called reassortment. Most animals can get flu, but viruses rarely pass from one species to another.

* From December 2005 through February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine influenza were confirmed. All but one person had contact with pigs. There was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in those cases.

* Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to those of seasonal influenza -- sudden onset of fever, coughing, muscle aches and extreme tiredness. Swine flu appears to cause more diarrhea and vomiting than normal flu.

* Seasonal flu kills between 250,000 and 500,000 people globally in an average year.

* In 1976 a new strain of swine flu started infecting people and worried U.S. health officials started widespread vaccination. More than 40 million people were vaccinated. But several cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a severe and sometime fatal condition that can be linked to some vaccines, caused the U.S. government to stop the program. If someone has done reading on the subject over the past several years they would have learned that MOST of the influenza mutation happens in pigs.

Pigs are walking virus labs.

I'm not saying that we don't have an escaped strain BUT what I AM saying is that there is a perfectly adequate explanation that doesn't involve perfidy.

Reading Niman's Recombinomics site can explain how this works in nature. While Henry isn't the most widely accepted theorist on Flu Mutations, he DOES have some VERY GOOD explanations for how this CAN happen.

My bet is this and the new bird flu spread in Egypt are both out of labs.

You can't make a virus too strong first off if you want it to spread. Both of these viruses are just right for spreading. They will get stronger as they spread the same as the Spanish Flu did.

There will be teams of scientists trying to track how this happened.

It's unfortunate that so many biologists and epidemiologists and related scientists have been MURDERED in the last 11 years.

With some type of UV coating that is biodegradable on ingestion, it could be sprayed from chemtrail nozzles.

In any case, better work on the ol' immune systems. Raw honey ? echinacea ? Red berry juice ? Trace minerals ? Certain green veggies ? I dunno. Maybe NCSusan, summerthyme, theoriginaldeb, or others I am forgetting, can weigh in with some immune system tips ( the easier to obtain materials would be better in a crisis ) ? Thanks.

This is the very first thing I thought of. Wanted to say it to DH but didn't. He already thinks I'm nuts!!!! If an underlying plan is to reduce the population. Well Then!!!! The age group that it seems to attack is the very age group that would be strong enough to fight the other agendas. The younger than 25 and the older than 45....Not So Much.

Would be much easier to bring it over from Mexico through either people or even mice ... unless we are the ones who took it to Mexico ...

Let's remember if this has an element of avian flu that you may be more adversely affected if you have a strong immune system. IIRC the fear with avian flu is the over reaction of the immune system and flooding the lungs called a "cytokine storm"..

I remember a thread here discussing the use of curcumin for bird flu. So a fine line exist on whether you want to take immune enhancing herbals if we have an avian element..which would be hinted at in the fact that they say that the fatalities are otherwise "healthy" individuals between 25-45..

don't like this...at all....and playing down the avian aspect of this is even more concerning IMO...I use olive leaf extract which is anti-viral and antibacterial......blessings T

Time out. IMHO this is flu being flu, doing what flu does. The following is just my humble opinion from what I have read lurking at places like Flutrackers, the CDC, WHO, and from other Influenza references like Barry's: The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague In History, Mike Davis's Avian Flu: Monster at the Door, etc. I do not claim to be an expert on flu or much of anything else.

Variations of H1N1 have been around a long time. It was a strain of H1N1 that was responsible for the 1918 pandemic and I think a variant strain of H1N1 popped up again in 1957. That was a nasty little pandemic too but no way as bad as the 1918 one.

Flu does not need help to mix up its genetic material. It is capable of doing that quit well on it's own without any help from a human bioengineer. All it needs is a sick pig, sick bird and a sick human, not necessarily in that order. Then as I understand it the genetic dice can start to roll or not. Maybe the strains in the infected can swap genetic material or maybe not. If, and that is a big if, they do swap material how dangerous the resulting virus is or if it easily transmissible and what kind of organism can be infected will vary.

The thing is influenza is easily transmitted and carried. The more pigs, people and birds that are sick and come in contact with each other the better the odds become of a genetic swap. The more swaps there are the more likelihood of a nasty bug being developed.

If I understand Dr Niman at Recombinetics.com influenza virus can even reshuffle the rungs on its genetic helix without being swapped out with other infected organisms. It will have the same genetic material it started out with just recombined in a different order. This may also change the attributes of the virus.

Yeah the Federal government has been busy lately and I would not be surprised soon to find out there is a new law that 2+3=fish. That said, I doubt the Mexican swine flu has been created in a lab government or otherwise. More likely IMHO it is the product of a combination of flyways, livestock production, poor human healthcare, nutrition, hygiene and access to air travel, none of which I see changing anytime soon. Historically the odds of a pandemic happening are good and one is currently overdue according to some sources. I personally believe the preparation to survive a pandemic is more important than trying to place blame for it's source. The next pandemic may not even be flu. It may be some new emerging disease that we are currently totally unfamiliar with.

I hate to say it because it is so tin-foil-hattish, but the possibility that we took it to Mexico crossed my mind as well. A pandemic would throw a punch at the warring drug cartels that have been a PITA to both the US and Mexican governments, distract people from paying so much attention to the financial debacle and corrupt government, and it would give a reason to allow for martial law in both countries.

Whether it was created or just happened, the outcomes of a pandemic would be the same.

Mexican Drug Cartel Linked With al Qaeda Unleashes Pandemic

Disturbing reports are emerging from the Kremlin today detailing what many Russian scientists believe is a biological attack upon the North American continent initiated by members of Mexican drug cartels operating in concert with al Qaeda cells linked to Pakistan who have unleashed as an yet ‘unknown’ influenza type virus reported to have killed at least 150 in Mexico and now being reported in the US States of Texas, California and New York.

According to these reports, Mexican Federal Police have reported to Interpol that the ‘bullet ridden’ bodies of 9 men found in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco have been linked to Yemen, Lebanon and Pakistan and are believed to be members of an al Qaeda cell operating out of the Triple Border Region of South America where Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil meet and is home to one of the largest Lebanese expatriate populations in the World.

These reports continue by stating that evidence found by Mexican police in the vehicles belonging to this alleged al Qaeda cell point to their having transported ‘biological materials’ believed to have been sold to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel that United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called a ‘National Security Threat’ in his launching America’s biggest ever assault ever upon these drug lords of Mexico eight weeks ago.

The purpose of this biological attack, reports the FSB, is but a further escalation in the deadly drug war in Mexico that threatens to topple their government and that the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has reported has killed nearly 10,000 and shows no signs of abating.

Forcing this unprecedented escalation in this war, the FSB further reports, was the arrest of the son of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael Zambada Garcia’s son Vicente Zambada Niebla, also known as “El Vicentillo”, who his father has vowed to free, “no matter what the cost”.

Russian Military Analysts also state in these reports that the ‘biological agent’ being used in this attack was ‘most likely’ created at the secret al Qaeda laboratories located in Algeria which recently suffered a ‘catastrophic’ failure during one of their experiments, and as we can read:

“An al Qaeda affiliate in Algeria closed a base earlier this month after an experiment with unconventional weapons went awry, a senior U.S. intelligence official said Monday.

The official, who spoke on the condition he not be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue, said he could not confirm press reports that the accident killed at least 40 al Qaeda operatives, but he said the mishap led the militant group to shut down a base in the mountains of Tizi Ouzou province in eastern Algeria.

He said authorities in the first week of January intercepted an urgent communication between the leadership of al Qaeda in the Land of the Maghreb (AQIM) and al Qaeda's leadership in the tribal region of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. The communication suggested that an area sealed to prevent leakage of a biological or chemical substance had been breached, according to the official.”

Russian Military reports further state that the influenza variant al Qaeda scientists were believed to be experimenting with was meant to be specifically ‘targeted’ against US and NATO Military Forces, and which appears to be confirmed by the World Health Organization who in reporting on this mysterious new flu virus states:

“The majority of these cases have occurred in otherwise healthy young adults. Influenza normally affects the very young and the very old, but these age groups have not been heavily affected in Mexico. Because there are human cases associated with an animal influenza virus, and because of the geographical spread of multiple community outbreaks, plus the somewhat unusual age groups affected, these events are of high concern.”

Western news sources further report about this growing tragedy:

“The World Health Organization said on Friday it was calling an emergency committee to advise whether outbreaks of swine flu in humans in the United States and Mexico constituted an international public health threat.

A deadly strain of swine flu never seen before has broken out in Mexico, killing as many as 60 people and raising fears of a possible spread across North America.

“WHO will convene, sometime in the very near future, an emergency committee under the International Health Regulations, which will consider whether or not this event constitutes a public health event of international concern,” WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told Reuters in Geneva.”

FSB reports also state that this mysterious virus has infiltrated the United States following the known drug routes from Mexico into the US States of Texas, California and New York and will, ‘most likely’ continue its spread across the entire North American continent should preventative measures fail to contain it.

President Obama is reported to be monitoring this deadly situation and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is reported to have activated his States Joint Emergency Operations Center in response to this crisis, though strangely, the US has stated that it is not yet advising its citizens to avoid traveling to Mexico.

Russian Medical Authorities in these reports state that though deadly, the dangers of contracting this, or any other type of influenza, can be countered by sound hygiene practices such as staying away from all medical care facilities unless emergency treatment is needed, staying away from crowds, wearing of face masks to minimize the spread of this disease through inhalation and the vigorous washing of hands after any contact with other human beings or surfaces they may have touched.

It is also interesting to note that the Conficker computer virus many believed would wreak havoc on April 1, is reported to be ‘slowly reactivating’ in a curious coincidence with the spread of this mysterious new virus, and which FSB sources state is ‘preparing’ for some as yet ‘unknown event’ believed to be imminent.

The very nature of the state of the world - and especially the US - have been making "surreal" the new "normal". I'm starting to think that since we have the rate of 'revelation' we've got in the news and on the net, the tin-foil hat might just be going out of fashion soon...

That being said, something keeps rising to the surface of my mind.

The Tea Parties were the first of public demonstrations wherein the people of the US demonstrated that WE KNOW what's going on (the International Financial Cabal), and we're pissed - and they know it. Add to that gun and ammo sales, defamation by Homeland Security of the very people that are calling the government out, the anticipated continuation and growth of further public demonstrations (which won't stay peaceful for whatever cause), the preparations for martial law...

The health precautions for colds and flu that a fearful population should take are:

- wash your hands frequently and well.
- cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough.
- don't touch your eyes or face without first washing your hands
- if you're sick, stay home and

AVOID CROWDS.

I and my mom watched the PBS special on the "scientists" digging up those old frozen bodies of sailors who were killed by the Spanish flu, it was maybe 12-15 years ago. They were literally gleeful once they found the bodies virtually unmarred from the day they died, knowing the virus was likely intact due to permafrost. This was the only existing virus and they wanted it for "research".

My mom and I were aghast at the implications, and both of us KNEW what they were doing with it, as we both had been aware of what the government was all about, and where the 'scientists' got their grant money for the research. Not to mention what we know of prophecy:

keep harking back to China Connection's post here yesterday where the North American Union shadow gov't has law in place with the UN/WHO especially for a pandemic, which supercedes US Constitutional laws for protections against what they plan to do. [officials released a plan that establishes U.N. law along with regulations by the World Trade Organization and World Health Organization as supreme over U.S. law during a pandemic.] A globally conducted 'martial law' upon a nation they are not, by US law entitled to interfere in. Guess where they will get the manpower to enforce this? The UN. And someone else posted here that several hundred thousand mercenaries were supposed to be hired from Canada, Mexico and Spain, to be brought here, IIRC.

This possible "pandemic" was designed, and the scum who have it under wraps were/are just waiting for the right time to release it. With the citizens finally growing their fangs, my guess is the time is now.

We see what the concentration camp bill is really for, as well as how they'll get us in them. I'm sure privately owned guns are not allowed in camp. They did but those were officials in large crowds, with mass vanishings of people globally IIRC, I may be mixing it up with another odd post I read here recently.

The "Avoid Crowds" would be a way for TPTB to dissipate the strengthening protests was the context for the hygiene aspect, and really WOULD be effective to that purpose, using fear as a motivator.

"Disappearances of officials in large crowds" could be the absence of officials to appear, as many of them did during the Tea Parties, with the angrier crowds gathering through the growth of the protests? Nice way to kill the protests... and the support of ANY officials.

And I've read where some folks are begining to believe it's an engineered, race-based, bio weapon. Note that, so far, only hispanics have died from it. People with spanish blood mixed in them get bad sick and take a long time to recover, but they do recover. People of 'anglo' extract are only affected as they would be with the normal human flu.

And if it really isn't a race-based bio weapon, it soon will be. The ones talking about this 'thing' are not scientist, just common folks. So, if they see it, you know 'they' see it, too...and work will begin on it soon.

Cascadians' post refers to 8 different gene strains, not flu strains, so that bigger leap from 4 to 8 flu strains doesn't carry a huge red light.

And I agree, the suspicions about how this came about is going to result in a real range of speculations about the purpose if the population becomes convinced that this IS bioengineered, and what it could have been bioengineered to do...

We here have been paying attention for a long time, and are pretty well educated as to how this stuff works - far more so than Joe Sixpack and his Beanie Baby collector wife.

You're also really correct about the genetic abilities of one population's having constructs to protect them from little bionasties while another group may not... think about the groups of people that have natural resistance to malaria, for example...

Old Girl has it right. Pigs are an AMAZING reservoir for viral reasortment. Henry Niman, while he isn't internationally well supported, does some GREAT genome sequencing, and has a series of interesting theories, BASED On the FACT that pigs are just walking virology labs. And the FACT that we've seen some interestring (or spectacular, or fascinating, or...)viral reasortments comeing out of swine feedlots in Asia as well as other countries.

Well lets not forget that Baxter supposedly contaminated all that flu vaccine with bird flu and shipped it to different countries..one has to wonder with the combination of swine flu from NA and swine flu from Europe, human flu and bird flu if it just might have been a vaccine mixture?

I think so.... Mexico is an excellent place to be ground zero.. They do not track as we do in the USA for medical.. There would be time for it to take hold before the alarm was sounded.. Also it is a popular place for spring break.. So alot of young people would have been down there lately... Easy to bring it back and then we have all those who come across the boarder illegally..

Al Qaeda Supporters' Tape to Call for Use of WMDs

Intelligence and law enforcement sources tell ABC News they are expecting al Qaeda supporters will post a new video on the Internet in the next 24 hours, calling for what one source said is "jihadists to use biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to attack the West."

"There have been several reports that al Qaeda will release a new message calling for the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against civilians," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told ABC News in an e-mail.

"Although there have been similar messages in the past, the FBI and [Department of Homeland Security] have no intelligence of any specific plot or indication of a threat to the U.S.," the e-mail said. "The FBI and U.S. intelligence community will review the message for any intelligence value."

While there is no evidence of any direct threat, the FBI sent a bulletin to 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country, out of an abundance of caution.

Some independent analysts don't think the public should worry much.

Ben Venzke, the CEO of IntelCenter, a group that monitors terrorist communications on the Web, said the video, entitled "Nuclear Jihad, The Ultimate Terror," is a jihadi supporter video compilation and not from an official group.

"Supporter videos are made by fans or supporters who may not have ever had any contact with a real terrorist," Venzke said. "These videos almost always are comprised of old video footage that is edited together to make a new video."

He said the material in these types of videos does not qualify as an official message from al Qaeda or any other group.

"Considering them so would be the equivalent of considering a 10-year-old's homemade fan video of his favorite sports team to be an official team message," Venzke said. "IntelCenter is not aware of any new imminent message by al-Qaeda or any other leading jihadist group in audio or video form that will call for the use of WMD against civilians."

Word of the new tape comes on the heels of a spate of messages from Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Earlier this month, al Qaeda released an audio message from bin Laden, excoriating the media and countries that are supportive of Israel. The release was timed to coincide with the nation's 60th anniversary and President Bush's trip to the region.

So far this year, four bin Laden tapes have surfaced.

In April, the terror group released audio recordings in which al-Zawahiri answered questions submitted to an online forum several months earlier.

The increasing volume of tapes seems to signal to the law enforcement and intelligence communities that top al Qaeda leadership is comfortable monitoring current events and communicating messages frequently.

Officials have tracked the trend, but FBI director Robert Mueller downplayed the surge of messages during an appearance earlier this month, noting that "there is a difference between al Qaeda's ability to communicate internally and al Qaeda's ability to post a message on the Internet. As we all know, the Internet is so broad. The access is absolutely open that just about anybody can post material on the Internet."

It shows all markers of being a "chimera" virus. Much like SARS it doesn't appear to be a natural strain and in all likelihood is a engineered virus. What better way to use up all of those stockpiles of tamiflu that proved to be useless against h5n1? These things don't just pop up out of nowhere unless somebody put them there. We've been following h5n1 for years now and this one shows up in a couple of days...curiouser and curiouser.

Lets also not forget those few Japanese people who went nuts after taking tamiflu and ended up killing themselves.

I like the conditioning used with the initial mystery death of 21 horses brought up from the south, MSM mind control at work to panic the populace.

Mexican Drug Cartel Linked With al Qaeda Unleashes Pandemic

Disturbing reports are emerging from the Kremlin today detailing what many Russian scientists believe is a biological attack upon the North American continent initiated by members of Mexican drug cartels operating in concert with al Qaeda cells linked to Pakistan who have unleashed as an yet ‘unknown’ influenza type virus reported to have killed at least 150 in Mexico and now being reported in the US States of Texas, California and New York.

According to these reports, Mexican Federal Police have reported to Interpol that the ‘bullet ridden’ bodies of 9 men found in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco have been linked to Yemen, Lebanon and Pakistan and are believed to be members of an al Qaeda cell operating out of the Triple Border Region of South America where Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil meet and is home to one of the largest Lebanese expatriate populations in the World.

These reports continue by stating that evidence found by Mexican police in the vehicles belonging to this alleged al Qaeda cell point to their having transported ‘biological materials’ believed to have been sold to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel that United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. called a ‘National Security Threat’ in his launching America’s biggest ever assault ever upon these drug lords of Mexico eight weeks ago.

The purpose of this biological attack, reports the FSB, is but a further escalation in the deadly drug war in Mexico that threatens to topple their government and that the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has reported has killed nearly 10,000 and shows no signs of abating.

Forcing this unprecedented escalation in this war, the FSB further reports, was the arrest of the son of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael Zambada Garcia’s son Vicente Zambada Niebla, also known as “El Vicentillo”, who his father has vowed to free, “no matter what the cost”.

Russian Military Analysts also state in these reports that the ‘biological agent’ being used in this attack was ‘most likely’ created at the secret al Qaeda laboratories located in Algeria which recently suffered a ‘catastrophic’ failure during one of their experiments, and as we can read:

“An al Qaeda affiliate in Algeria closed a base earlier this month after an experiment with unconventional weapons went awry, a senior U.S. intelligence official said Monday.

The official, who spoke on the condition he not be named because of the sensitive nature of the issue, said he could not confirm press reports that the accident killed at least 40 al Qaeda operatives, but he said the mishap led the militant group to shut down a base in the mountains of Tizi Ouzou province in eastern Algeria.

He said authorities in the first week of January intercepted an urgent communication between the leadership of al Qaeda in the Land of the Maghreb (AQIM) and al Qaeda's leadership in the tribal region of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan. The communication suggested that an area sealed to prevent leakage of a biological or chemical substance had been breached, according to the official.”

Russian Military reports further state that the influenza variant al Qaeda scientists were believed to be experimenting with was meant to be specifically ‘targeted’ against US and NATO Military Forces, and which appears to be confirmed by the World Health Organization who in reporting on this mysterious new flu virus states:

“The majority of these cases have occurred in otherwise healthy young adults. Influenza normally affects the very young and the very old, but these age groups have not been heavily affected in Mexico. Because there are human cases associated with an animal influenza virus, and because of the geographical spread of multiple community outbreaks, plus the somewhat unusual age groups affected, these events are of high concern.”

Western news sources further report about this growing tragedy:

“The World Health Organization said on Friday it was calling an emergency committee to advise whether outbreaks of swine flu in humans in the United States and Mexico constituted an international public health threat.

A deadly strain of swine flu never seen before has broken out in Mexico, killing as many as 60 people and raising fears of a possible spread across North America.

“WHO will convene, sometime in the very near future, an emergency committee under the International Health Regulations, which will consider whether or not this event constitutes a public health event of international concern,” WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told Reuters in Geneva.”

FSB reports also state that this mysterious virus has infiltrated the United States following the known drug routes from Mexico into the US States of Texas, California and New York and will, ‘most likely’ continue its spread across the entire North American continent should preventative measures fail to contain it.

President Obama is reported to be monitoring this deadly situation and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is reported to have activated his States Joint Emergency Operations Center in response to this crisis, though strangely, the US has stated that it is not yet advising its citizens to avoid traveling to Mexico.

Russian Medical Authorities in these reports state that though deadly, the dangers of contracting this, or any other type of influenza, can be countered by sound hygiene practices such as staying away from all medical care facilities unless emergency treatment is needed, staying away from crowds, wearing of face masks to minimize the spread of this disease through inhalation and the vigorous washing of hands after any contact with other human beings or surfaces they may have touched.

It is also interesting to note that the Conficker computer virus many believed would wreak havoc on April 1, is reported to be ‘slowly reactivating’ in a curious coincidence with the spread of this mysterious new virus, and which FSB sources state is ‘preparing’ for some as yet ‘unknown event’ believed to be imminent.
