WHO Ready With Antiviruals To Combat Swine Flu
Published on 04-24-2009 Email To Friend Print Version

Source: Reuters

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that it was prepared with (rapid containment measures) including antivirals if needed to combat the swine flu outbreaks in Mexico and the United States.

The Geneva-based agency has been stockpiling doses of Roche Holding's Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir, a pill that can both treat flu and prevent infection.

The new virus, not previously detected in pigs or humans, has proved sensitive to the drug, the WHO said in a statement.

The WHO and its regional office in Washington, D.C., are also sending experts to Mexico to help health authorities with disease surveillance, laboratory diagnosis and clinical management of cases.

Mexican health officials have reported more than 850 cases of pneumonia in the capital, Mexico City, including 59 who died. In San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico, 24 cases including 3 deaths have been detected.

They have also informed the WHO about a third suspected outbreak of swine flu in Mexicali, near the U.S. border, with four suspect cases and no deaths so far.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control have said there were 8 cases of swine influenza in California and Texas and no deaths.

Health authorities in the two North American countries have the resources required already in place, including Tamiflu, and are "well equipped," according to the WHO.

"WHO is prepared with rapid containment measures should it be necessary to be deployed," WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi told Reuters.

The United Nations agency saw no need at this point to issue travel advisories warning travelers not to go to parts of Mexico or the United States. "However, the situation may change depending on what the situation in the field is," she said.

The WHO will convene a meeting of its Emergency Committee on international health regulations, probably on Saturday afternoon, she added.

WHO director-general Margaret Chan was flying back to Geneva overnight from Washington, D.C., for the emergency discussions which would link public health authorities and experts in various parts of world in a virtual meeting, she said.

The emergency committee could make recommendations including whether to change the pandemic alert level, she added.

"Because there are human cases associated with an animal influenza virus, and because of the geographical spread of multiple community outbreaks, plus the somewhat unusual age groups affected, these events are of high concern," the WHO said in a statement.

It may be time to do a quick check of preps, just in case. You may want to order some of these:

China Connection posted a flu newsblurb from 2007 that mentions the NAU (aka Security and Prosperity Partnership) was involved in:
This type of threat was addressed at the recent Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America summit in Canada, where officials released a plan that establishes U.N. law along with regulations by the World Trade Organization and World Health Organization as supreme over U.S. law during a pandemic. It also sets the stage for militarizing the management of continental health emergencies.

The "North American Plan for Avian & Pandemic Influenza" was finalized at the SPP summit last month in Montebello, Quebec.

Planned? Without a doubt. The above organization has it's own shadow government set up utilizing 'officials' from Canada, Mexico and the US. You can view the 2007 participants and their SPP titles here.

Why do you think they don't want people having access to SSKI and colloidal silver, among other health promoting substances?

Get your N95 or N100 masks ready. Carry a few in your vehicle.. and make SURE you wash your hands often. As of tonight my pockets are stocked with alcohol wipes as well.

Also might be a good idea to set up a "safe room" of sorts in your house if this goes pandemic.

I would think by now we are all ready for this.. but if not THIS is the place to ask questions. Keep a VERY close eye on the news as this could play out very quickly.

Sorry for the drift...

Half the people in my office have been down with a hacking/phlegmy cough all week. It's probably just a cough but it seemed to pop up out of nowhere and by today, several people were just about hacking up a lung. Wouldn't be surprised if some folks are out on Monday. Hope it's just a cough.

Dang I hope so too ... since I also live in Michigan ... Husband the last 2 days has seemed to come down with something ... hacking a lot ... to say the least a bit concerned ...

How in the world could DNA elements from all these different sources, end up together?

My only guess would be in a laboratory...where they were intentionally combined.

This is genetically modified / evil personified...

I've heard LOTS of people coughing all over--especially in the grocery store. Terrible-sounding coughs. The other day I volunteered at my daughter's school, and a lady sitting across the table from me repeatedly had this deep, phlegmy cough, and didn't even cover her mouth most of the time. :shk:

I keep hand sanitizer around, and use it after every shopping trip, touching money, etc. Even after shaking hands with folks in the meet/greet at church. That or go and wash up right away.

Its all mighty suspicious. Worlds worst financial catastrophe, still having along way to go, interceded by a pandemic. This is playing out like a badly written sci-fi, action drama movie. It smells way to diversionary. In all the history of this nation, how can so much catastrophic sh*t go down in such a short time? Im not a big believer in coincidence.

Wow, not just the Tamiflu is gone, the whole site is gone!

yep.

Just posted in my blog on this:

http://thespiritoftruth.blogspot.com/

Who would be behind starting a pandemic in North America?

Consider the following excerpt from Chapter 16, Chemical and Biological Warfare: The Covert Dimension, in the long forgotten book, Soviet Strategic Deception (1987), which was authored by Joseph Douglass, Jr.:

"....their (Russian) strategy calls for deceptive actions designed to mislead the West into lowering its guard while the Soviets covertly go to maximum readiness to strike first....

As part of this process, the Soviets could initiate a massive covert biological and chemical war that would be confusing for the U.S. leadership to analyze - possibly impossible to know the certain cause. This process could effectively disable U.S. forces and the civilian population and make it impossible for the U.S. to go to war..." (Soviet Strategic Deception: CBW - The Covert Dimension, Joseph D. Douglass, Jr., p.329)

This could really get scary fast.
If I recall,I think most states have passed some sort of law
that allows the Govner to force people to get vaccine shots
in the event of an out break,or be detained as log as they wish.

I know Colorado did.
I can see them making it mandatory to have to show your
vaccine shot record before your employer would let you in.

Getting the tin foil hat on

On may 4th when they release the stress test results for the banks

who is going to want to run on down to the bank when there is a pandemic going on.

Just one of those stray thoughts keeping the brain cells warm:whistle:

Wow, I just thought about something that Cappy always said " keep an eye on the South, that's where IT will come from traveling faster than ground transportation". That may not be the exact words, but its close. I always thought it would be the typical army type of invasion if IT happened, but this is also an invasion from the South isn't it? Sorry if this is a thread drift -

Swine Flu May Be Named Event of ‘International Concern’ by WHO

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601085&sid=atHtXtCigRII&refer=europe#

By Jason Gale

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- The World Health Organization is set to declare the deadly swine flu virus outbreak in Mexico and the U.S. a global concern, potentially prompting travel restrictions, said a person familiar with the matter.

An emergency committee of the WHO in Geneva will declare the outbreak “a public health event of international concern” in a 4 p.m. teleconference today, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting is confidential. In response, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan may raise the level of pandemic alert, which could lead to travel restrictions aimed at curbing the disease’s spread.

“These levels of pandemic alert are all signals for action,” said Malik Peiris, a professor of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, who has studied influenza viruses for more than a decade. “Raising the level of alertness to influenza, especially in returning travelers, would be a relevant thing to do.”

Human-to-human spread of the previously unseen H1N1 swine influenza in Mexico and the U.S. is heightening concern that the virus may spark a pandemic. At least 68 people have died and more than 1,000 have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms in the Mexico City region in the past month, Jose Cordova, Mexico’s Health Minister, told reporters yesterday. The government has shut schools and distributed face masks.

Sari Setiogi, a WHO spokeswoman in Geneva, declined to comment on the agency’s response, saying it will depend on the outcome of today’s meeting.

Closing Theaters

Mexico’s Social Security Institute shut all of the theaters and cultural centers it operates nationwide to avoid spreading the flu strain -- reminiscent of actions implemented during the 2003 SARS outbreak in Asia. Travel curbs imposed there damaged economies throughout the region, where that virus circulated most widely.

In Singapore, where 33 infected people died, gross domestic product shrank 11.4 percent in the second quarter of 2003 because of the severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Swine flu was confirmed in 20 of the deaths so far in Mexico. Of 14 tissue samples tested from Mexico, half were a genetic match with the swine flu reported in eight people in California and Texas, the Atlanta-based Centers of Disease Control and Prevention said.

“We do not know whether this swine flu virus or some other influenza virus will lead to the next pandemic,” Richard Besser, the CDC’s acting director, told reporters yesterday on a teleconference. “Scientists around the world continue to monitor the virus and take its threat seriously.”

Pandemic Threat

The new influenza strain, a conglomeration of genes from swine, bird and human viruses, poses the biggest threat of a large-scale flu pandemic since the emergence of the H5N1 strain that has killed millions of birds and hundreds of people, said William Schaffner, an influenza expert at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.

“It re-combined to create something totally new,” David Butler-Jones, Canada’s chief public health minister, told reporters yesterday. “How, when, or where it did that I don’t think we know. What it will lead to is impossible to predict.”

WHO’s alert level is at level 3, meaning there is no, or very limited, human-to-human transmission of a potential pandemic virus. Officials at the agency have said the global spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus since 2003 has put the world closer to another influenza pandemic than at any time since 1968, when the last of the previous century’s three pandemics occurred.

Alert System

WHO uses a six-step alert system to tell the world what preparations to take in response to a pandemic. Flu can spread quickly when a new strain emerges because no one has natural immunity and a vaccine takes months to develop. The 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, which killed as many as 50 million people, began when an avian flu virus jumped to people, doctors said.

Teams of disease investigators have been sent to California and Texas to trace how the malady has spread, and the U.S. offered to send scientists to Mexico, said the CDC’s Besser. U.S. hospitals are being asked to collect samples from patients with flu-like symptoms, said Schaffner, chief of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt, in a telephone interview yesterday.

‘Sense of Urgency’

“They are asking us who work in hospitals to go to our emergency rooms and our pediatric wards to gather specimens and start testing them,” Schaffner said. “This has a sense of urgency about it.”

Mexico’s government has closed schools, museums, movie theaters and libraries in Mexico City and surrounding areas until further notice, according to an e-mail from the National Arts and Culture Council. It’s also handing out free facemasks and extending the deadline for filing taxes until May 31, Cordova said. A million doses of antiviral medicine are available for distribution, he said.

Twenty-four cases, including three deaths, have been reported in San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico, and four cases have been found in Mexicali near the border with the U.S., according to the WHO.

Three main human flu strains -- H3N2, H1N1 and type-B -- circulate and cause 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year in seasonal epidemics, according to the World Health Organization. Pandemics occur when a novel influenza A-type virus, to which almost no one has natural immunity, emerges and begins spreading.

This thing has just started and of course there hasn't been much testing at all, so who knows what the real numbers are.

It is possible it will fizzle out quickly. Praying that is the case.

If not, a lot of ppl are going to get sick.

I've been very ill for 5 years now. Doubt I'd survive it but maybe I'm so weak this bod wouldn't have the ooooomph for the immune storm. In January got the flu and still have strange symptoms that never had before.

Dr Henry Niman said years ago that if the bird flu picks up swine flu components, watch out -- that's the signal for virulent spread.

This is a good link to check on daily:

If this virus is a combination of human, pig, and bird flu, any indication that it (this hybrid virus) can be spread also by pigs and BIRDS as easily as by humans?? Curious....

Well my sources ( inside looking out) say this could be what Osama was talking about. To many strains combined to be nature. Perfect tactial plan also. As everyone is trying to come across before aministy is grantied. National guard is on standby for ( drug interdiction) to go to the border. Have a nice day.

The flu is loose, and cannot now be contained.

They'll never know how many people really got sick. Most folks fight off the flu fairly quickly, and never bother going to the doc. They ride it out at home.

I've wondered how many people have had that Bird Flu, and not know it. All we hear about are the DEATHS. How many have had it and recovered?

FL... I thought that about Bird Flu when it was the big news, but digging deeper found that WHO had done a ton of testing of people who either reported "mild" "flu like" illnesses in the outbreak areas, or who had family members who did have Avian influenza... and the bad news was, there didn't seem to be a large population of healthy folks with antibodies.

Which translates into "anyone who actually got the Bird Flu got sicker than a dog... sick enough to attempt to get care, even in the most primitive areas".

Only time will tell if this one is the same.

You forgot it's coupled with efforts to prevent
  • self defense,
  • growing one's own food.

So to step waaaaay out on the paranoid branch...

1. TV ads that say "Hungry? Come get a flu shot, and we have food."
or...
2. big sign at grocery store: "Due to emergency order: No one allowed to enter without vaccination certificate."

Please consider that this may be another distraction - watch world events closely. Too much 'history' is filling our time, right now, we don't want to miss anything hidden by the urgency of this situation. :ld:
