Does anyone really think this war will be over if Putin disappeared?

This is folly!

Europe needs Russia, not the other way round. Russia has rich natural resources, China has the industrial might and people. Anyone adding this up?

Oh, and where is the Ukrainian leader? From what I'm allowed to read, not in the Ukraine....

Stupidity abounds.

Consider this. Russia will still be there if Putin is gone. IT’s resources etc etc. Perhaps a more amiable (read bribable) leader will be installed. Someone more willing to go along to get along.

They not only need Russia, they want and need it broken up and under their control.

Broken to the Halter, as it were...

I would think if Putin were to go down what would follow would make Hitler's night of the long knives amateurish. I think the behind the scenes opposition would take the opportunity to back away from WWIII.

Which way Russian man? Folks really need to read the complete history or Russia.

All of these imagined scenarios would be interesting if
"the west" had not already stated the intent to remove Russia from the map and break it up.

I am pretty sure the Russians believe it.

And that is the only question you need consider.
Do the Russians believe the intent is to wipe them off the planet - genocide?

But you go ahead and believe you can "make a deal" with someone who knows you are going to destroy them.

‘Why Are You So Happy?’ Russian Propagandist Slams Own Audience Over Moscow Drone Attack Comments

Vladimir Solovyov warned his viewers to be ‘careful with their intonation’ after some said they were happy at drones attacking a suburb where Putin has an official home.

by Kyiv Post | May 31, 2023, 6:16 pm | Comments ( 1)

Russia’s chief propagandist Vladimir Solovyov launched into a tirade against his own audience on May 30 after some expressed joy at drones exploding over an upmarket district in Moscow that’s home to many Russian officials.

Speaking on his TV show "Solovyov Live", he advised his fellow citizens to “come to their senses” after becoming incensed by viewers’ comments.

“Why are you guys writing this bulls**t?” he asked. “Do you like the fact that a strike has happened in Moscow? Why are you so happy? Do Russian people not live there? Are they not our compatriots?”

He added: “What are you making such a big deal out of? Or have we no longer got a united country… a united people?”

Solovyov’s rant came just a few hours after the Russian capital came under attack from kamikaze drones that damaged two buildings and injured two people.

Moscow authorities said eight drones were used in the attack, though other non-state media sources claimed the real number was closer to 25. A senior Russian lawmaker said three drones had been downed over the capital's exclusive Rublyovka suburb where Russian President Vladimir Putin has an official residence.

State propagandist Vladimir Solovyov went off on Tuesday morning against his Russian compatriots who jeered at the fact that many of the drones that attacked Moscow were intercepted in and around the city’s most notoriously affluent suburb. Class war! pic.twitter.com/rn4q63gOii

Solovyov told his viewers to be “careful with their intonation,” adding: “Shove your ego up your ***hole… think about the country and think about the people.”

His viewers’ opinions appeared to be shared by Wagner Private Military Group Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. whose profanity-laden outburst on May 30 lambasted officials from the Russian Defense Ministry for allowing drones to fly over Moscow. He accused them of failing to step up and implored them to “tear the s**t out of their offices.”

At the same time, Prigozhin appeared to be fine with drones flying over the elite Rublyovka suburb.

“The fact that they fly into Rublyovka – to hell with it, let your houses go up in flames,” he said. “But what are ordinary people to do when drones carrying explosives crash into their windows.”

One needs an intact leader to negotiate the end of hostilities. Otherwise, the fires keep burning uncontrolled throughout the theater of conflict, long after someone won the war

Russia sinks Ukraine’s ‘last warship’ – MOD, 31 May

The Russian military has destroyed Ukraine’s “last warship,” the Yury Olefirenko, in a high-precision airstrike, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday.
“On May 29, as a result of a strike by a high-precision weapon of the Russian Aerospace Forces on a warship mooring in the port of Odessa, the last warship of the Naval Forces of Ukraine, the Yury Olefirenko, was destroyed,” the ministry stated in a report shared on its Telegram channel.
A day earlier, war correspondent Andrey Rudenko also reported that the Yury Olefirenko had been sunk after a series of overnight airstrikes on military facilities in Odessa, citing Ukrainian sources.

Ukrainian officials have yet to confirm the sinking of the ship. Oleg Chalyk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, told Reuters that he would not respond to Russian claims, and that the Ukrainian Navy would not disclose the details of any losses.

Ironically, unlike Ukrinform, Ukranews has been intensely interested in RFN deployment in the Black Sea. In the period, the headline count of "combat ships on duty" ranges 3-7—embellish with suspiciously precise detail. For example (30 May).

As of 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, Russia is holding 7 ships on combat duty in the Black Sea, including 4 carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 34 missiles. The command of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced this, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"In the Black Sea there are 7 enemy ships on combat duty, of which 4 carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles, a total salvo - up to 34 missiles; in the Sea of Azov - 1 enemy ship; in the Mediterranean Sea, up to 7 enemy ships are on combat duty, of which 1 carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, a total salvo - up to 4 missiles," the report said.
During the day, in the interests of the Russian Federation, the following passed along the Kerch-Yenikal Strait:
- 18 ships to the Sea of Azov, of which 4 continued to move from the Bosphorus Strait;
- 20 ships to the Black Sea, of which 9 continued towards the Bosphorus Strait.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, as of the morning of May 29, there were 6 enemy ships in the Black Sea, including 2 carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 16 missiles

Truth of the matter is: none of the modern AD systems were originally designed to defend against drones. Everybody is trying to pivot to this new threat, and they're updating software and systems in real-time.

Small drones, going slower and lower than any fighter or cruise missile, are just ridiculously difficult to "see" and engage. Air Defense Systems are programmed to filter out things below certain thresholds, and these drones are operating below those sensor thresholds most of the time. If you don't have a sophisticated sensor platform up HIGH, looking down, with a specific eye towards tiny composite material aircraft with almost no Radar Cross Section... Well, you're in trouble.

In a world where jets and cruise missiles flying at 200AGL was considered "Low," you now have smart vehicles flying BELOW treetop level on their way to kill you. That's REALLY hard to defend against.
That's an awfully good point, MarkD. I've been considering that exact same thing (admittedly from a layman's POV, however) and came to essentially the same conclusion.

Things buzzing around at low speed at treetop level are undoubtedly being filtered out with the rest of the white noise. Otherwise every owl, chicken hawk or buzzard would be getting a SAM up their keesters and nobody wants a bunch of indignant bird ladies on their tail feathers. I'm sure that angle is being or else has been tried, though. If something is flying a straight fly path instead of circling like a buzzard or stopping to observe like an owl or eagle would (because there are no straight lines in nature), that's a clue but still, under-the-horizon discovery is anything but optimum.

Other than some magical software improvements, about the only present, practical solution one could see is to have over-the-horizon assets on station which could spot straight-line flight paths a long ways off and assign them target IDs. So the Russian equivalents of AWACS (to disrupt the real-time data stream being fed into the strike package as well) or Rivet Joint data gatherers would have to be added into the mix.

It's not entirely impossible that the answer may well be loitering drones which could be landed, refueled and relaunched as part of a complete wing (or some way of refueling drones in flight could ultimately be useful). Staying behind the front lines at an altitude which gives them some CAP coverage as well as OTH peeks without exposing themselves to SAM networks might be something they're looking at, too. There could be a sweet spot in there somewhere which would satisfy all 3 conditions.

They may have shiny orbital killer toys which are ready but I'm sure they wouldn't want to show that capability before NATO aircraft came into theater. This is strictly conjecture, of course.

There's some smart folks somewhere working these issues. People in the Russian MoD and the Puzzle Palace are undoubtedly sucking in information daily, as well as people like the Iranians (seemingly now the largest manufacturer of drones due to the ones which they've recovered from us), the Israelis, the Turks, the Chinese. You name it, the MIC has their geeks watching and learning right now while all the toys are being brought out of the basement.
