Just when you thought it was safe to sink into a tall glass of beer as US government
shutdown was avoided, South Korea's Yonhap News reports that the South Korean
military has confirmed that North Korea has test-fired another ballistic missile
.

Yonhap News Agency @YonhapNews
(URGENT) N. Korea test-fires a ballistic missile: S. Korean military.

The missile was reportedly fired from an area just north of Pyongyang.

This comes just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned on
Friday that failure to curb North Korea's nuclear and missile development
could lead to 'catastrophic consequences,'
while China and Russia cautioned
Washington against threatening military force. As Reuters reports, Washington has
recently lavished praise on Beijing for its efforts to rein in its ally Pyongyang, but
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made clear to the U.N. Security Council it was not
only up to China to solve the North Korean problem.
"The key to solving the nuclear issue on the peninsula does not lie
in the hands of the Chinese side,"
Wang told the 15-member council in
remarks contradicting the White House belief that it does wield significant
influence.

The ministerial meeting of the council, chaired by Tillerson, exposed old
divisions between the United States and China on how to deal with North
Korea. China wants talks first and action later, while the United States
wants North Korea to curtail its nuclear program before such talks start.

"It is necessary to put aside the debate over who should take the
first step and stop arguing who is right and who is wrong,"
Wang
told the council. "Now is the time to seriously consider resuming talks."

Tillerson responded: "We will not negotiate our way back to
the negotiating table with North Korea, we will not reward
their violations of past resolutions, we will not reward their
bad behavior with talks."

North Korea did not take part in the meeting.

It seems we just got one step closer to "a major, major conflict."

A couple more missile failures and there won't be anyone left to launch another - if what I suspect happens to the technicians, etc when there's a failure is close to the mark.

Breaking: "North Korean missile exploded in the air in a matter of seconds" - @YonhapNews

You gotta wonder if we have an "asset" in theater.

Considering what is public knowledge about U.S. laser platforms that will be going into operational testing VERY soon, I just gotta wonder if we have a black-program Global Hawk-ish platform with a laser, loitering in the vicinity.

Do you guys think we are hacking the missiles once launched to cause failure?

It seems very odd that None[/B] of their launches lately have been successful.

Now it is reported that the missile failed. Hmmmm. They have fired many others that worked just fine. The last two days I have come to the conclusion we (US) have been trying to walk this back. How would we know for certain that the missile failed? Does a failed test reduce the pressure on us a little? Just my thoughts.

With all of our anti ballistic missile toys in the area I'm shocked it was allowed to leave the launch site at all.

Very likely that the missile was airborne for over 100km; especially if it crashed 40 km deep into the #SeaOfJapan.

Sure we have the capability to hack into their computers to make it fail. They probably have hacking capability to hack out electrical grid. Thoughts?

That is my biggest fear, that they do have the capability to hack into our grid. And would.

Unless the Norks have fitted these test missiles with range safety packages, there's nothing for the US to hack into after launch. Ballistic missiles are pretty much independent after launch.

Playing the devil's advocate: how is this ballistic missile test different than our minute man missile tests in California? We are allowed to play but no one else is?

Be Well

may all be well
AFAIK when the US tests one, it's far away from any other countries. Not so with Nork. Plus, the US isn't threatening to blow any other countries to bits, either.

It isn't IMO. But we are allowed to flaunt our prowess but they are not. In Kim's mind we launched a test ICBM yesterday to intimidate him and he responded in kind to save face. Problem is that he probably doesn't see that he is falling right in to a predetermined trap.

That's the game ... that may be the diplomatic argument north Korea makes as well as the Russians and/or Chinese.

At this point, with all the different reports re success/failure, launch site, direction etc, I'm not unconvinced that there wasn't more than one launch. JUST MY OWN SPECULATION.

The first casualty of war is the truth. It is a pretty broad range to say the missile either blew up on the launch pad, shortly after launch, or went 100 km towards Japan.

If it did fly 100 km towards Japan, well that is a big win for Little Fat Boy. If nothing else, I'm think Japan's PM Abe is foaming at the mouth and spitting nails now.

This isn't poking at a hornet's nest, gang: THIS IS STICKING YOUR MIDDLE FINGER INTO THE MOUTH OF A TIGER. The circus performer that got killed by his tiger comes to mind. The level of CHUTZPAH Little Fat Boy just showed makes it very clear he isn't going to back down from his attempts to get an ICBM than can hit Los Angeles.

Agreed. And who knows if they (plural) weren't headed to a specific target and shot down, not failed.
