Mental health problems
•Aug 5, 2020

Dr. John Campbell

He distinguishes two groups of effects: depression due to the stress of pandemic, second group is direct viral effects in those who are infected. Two studies Italian and Spanish. The former: severe hospitalized patients, second included mild cases and people who were infected but remained in the community. The severe cohort of course had more severe problems but some with mild disease had serious mental health consequences.

Health is taken for granted when you have it particularly mental health .Mental health suffering is difficult to conceptualize, when you are not suffering mental difficulties. Hence psychiatry is something which many people simply just don't get it. A sort of Cinderalla subject. But people suffering may find the simplest task to be like climbing Mt Everest Everyone knows people like this. Don't take mental health for granted.

Italian study: read it yourself. More than half recovered and suffered PTSB insomnia and depression (hopelessness, or so they feel and think, even though there is hope via treatment), anxiety (disproportionate reaction to outside stimuli).

Severity was in proportion to immflammatory effect of viral disease, ie severity of illness.. 390 people followed up one month after illness. Features of PTSD in 28%. Depression was the prominent feature in 31%. Thus, half the people who have covid illness will have psychiatric sequeali. Will these conditions resolve? We don't know yet. Anxiety 40+ percent. 20% develope compulsive symptoms. OCDs can be anything. Can look bizarre. Can be simple things. Touch things, wash hands, whatver. People with this can have perfect insight, know it is not rational, but they have the compulsion.

Spanish online survey large size.People who had not been hospitalized and had now recovered. They still suffered depression anxiety and PTSD features. Collected data on mental state and spiritual wellbeing. Loneliness social support discrimination sense of belongingand inclusion . Spain of course a Catholic country. (Factor that in). Women did worse than men. The symptoms and signs not as bad as people who had severe disease but still quite a lot. 13:00 discusses relative numbers. These are still significant numbers even people with mild disease. Therefore we can expect to see elevated presentation of these kind of symptom. Older age groups did better. Those who believed that they had been provided adequate information fared better. Those with better financial stability did better. Ongoing symptoms, made it worse. Relatives with infection, made it worse.

Would say I have had patients with anxiety and depression and most do well. I myself have. You can make a full recovery and return to full duties. We can be doggedly positive...everyone watching this video will have a role helping someone who will be struggling. Our role is to be beside them and be with them and metaphorically or actually hand holding.

Around 19:00 discusses a third paper. Sequeali affecting the nervous system. We know about cardiac sequala. Neurology the paper on emergent nuerological issues. Do read it for yourself. Sever Acute Respiratory Sydrome is linked to neuro problems it is established, scientifically. But not as much as respiratory and cardiac. More information may emerge over the next month. One or two patients had "fits". Autoimmune factor: abnormal muscle movement affects, Ischemia - pro thrombotic state: blood more likely to clot. Potential for a permanent stroke. Guillame-barres syndrome is a well known post viral temporary paralysis. Can effect breathing. 95 per cent make a full recovery. Caused by peripheral nerves. Other issues acute disseminated encephapholopathy immflammation of brain and spinal chord. Patients can get quite ill in acute phase but most recover. Treatment with steroids. Some long term residual damage may occur. Small sample, Pulmonary fibrosis, heart damage permanent. In terms of psyche disorders we will see a lot. Nuero probably we will see more most will resolve but not all. Requires quite a bit of patient management. After a year or so and hopefully the acute crisis phase of the pandemic resolves we will know more. Some countries lack infrastructure to cope with these problems.

10 Million Afghans Likely Infected and Recovered From COVID-19: Survey
By Ayaz Gul
August 05, 2020 02:01 PM

AP_20182597758312.jpg

ISLAMABAD - An official survey conducted in Afghanistan finds the coronavirus have likely infected nearly a third of the country's population, or roughly 10 million people.

The Afghan health ministry released the estimates Wednesday, saying they are based on antibody tests on around 9,500 people across the war-shattered country.

Acting Health Minister,Ahmad Jawad Osmani told a news conference in Kabul the survey showed 31.5 percent of Afghanistan's population has been infected by COVID-19 "and they have recovered.

Osmani noted that 53 percent of the capital city's nearly five million residents have contracted the coronavirus.
An official tally of infections as of Friday stood at around 37,000, with nearly 1,300 deaths, since the outbreak hit Afghanistan in late February. But the low figures are attributed to the turmoil-hit country's extremely limited testing capacity.

Osmani said the survey has been conducted with the help of the World Health Organization and Johns Hopkins University.
"We will use the findings of this survey to better prepare ourselves for a possible second wave," he said, adding a mortality rate survey is underway.

Afghan officials have said migrants returning from neighboring Iran imported the coronavirus. Iran has been one of the worst-hit countries in the world.

"Afghanistan is on the edge of potential health, social and economic catastrophes caused by COVID-19 as the disease places a crippling burden on one of the 10 most fragile states in the world," the International Federation of Red Cross warned last month.

"The real toll of the pandemic on the Afghan population is expected to be much higher and remains under-reported due to limited testing and weak health systems," it added.

Best Practices For Preventing & Treating Covid-19
•Premiere in progress. Started 15 minutes ago

Peak Prosperity Dr. Chris Martenson
Given all that we know after our months of intensively tracking the coronavirus pandemic, what are the best ways to prevent & treat it? 1) Everyone should invest in boosting the "terrain" of their own body's health. Boost your intake of Vitamins D & C, eat healthy, get plenty of rest, and avoid stress. 2) Everyone should wear a mask, practice social distance, and get tested asap if exposure or illness is suspected. At-risk people deserve extra precautionary protections. 3) If exposed or in initial sickness stages, administer HCQ+ within 2 days or sooner of symptoms onset. 4) If symptoms progress, administer MATH+ cocktail. 5) If symptoms worsen further, deliver advanced therapeutic support, ideally in a hospital setting. \

At Home, Cheap, COVID-19 Tests with Results in 15 Minutes: How to Fix Testing with Dr. Michael Mina
•Aug 6, 2020

MedCram - Medical Lectures Explained CLEARLY

Michael Mina, MD, PhD responds to questions about how cheap (approx. $1), at-home, COVID-19 tests (results in 15 minutes) could be utilized to dramatically slow the spread of this pandemic (and open up schools etc. in a faster and safer way). Dr. Mina is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health and a core member of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics. Dr. Mina's research has demonstrated that the sensitivity of these simple saliva paper antigen tests (the technology already exists) is high enough to detect the vast majority of infectious COVID-19 and could be utilized frequently at home.

Talk is cheap

Redding, Calif. — Doctor George Domb is an ear, nose, and throat specialist in Redding.
He has been practicing for more than 40 years and he says he has a simple way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Doctor Domb says combining "Povidone Iodine”, brand name betadine, with a saline nasal spray is a powerful way to kill coronavirus.

He says when a high proportion of ENT doctors started dying, others started using it to protect themselves.

"Somewhere along the line after I started using it in the nose to prevent myself from getting COVID-19, I started giving it to my patients, the ones in my office, and then a little while ago I started thinking the whole pandemic could be squelched if enough people throughout a community use it," Dr. Domb explained.

It is all available over the counter at your local pharmacy.

Povidone Iodine is a disinfectant, and you want the solution, not the scrub.

Dr. Domb says to mix half a teaspoon of the 10% Povidone Iodine solution with a 44-mL spray bottle of saline nasal spray and shake it up.

He has given it to his family members.

Amanda Domb, Dr. Domb’s daughter said, "I use it four times a day, it's super easy to use, it doesn't hurt or anything. You just do it twice in each nostril, sniff a little bit and it's done. It's like really easy to add towards your morning routine and after you spray it in, if you just kind of tilt your head back that helps as well. It's just an easy precaution to take. I also am always wearing my mask, social distancing, but this is just like that extra layer of protection that is helpful."

Dr. Domb says studies can take up to a year. And having three daughters in Los Angeles, a COVID-19 hotspot, pushed him to speak out now.

"I'm saying it kills it 100% in the laboratory, it's 100% safe, and we've used it for years and we know it kills bacteria in the nose. So, to me it was just common sense," continued Dr. Domb.
Dr. Domb has taken this all the way to the Infectious Disease Society of America guidelines doctor who told him they're awaiting results from studies.

Finally, he says this will not work for an estimated 10 to 15% of the population.

Do not use it if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have hyperthyroidism, are being treated for thyroid cancer with irradiated iodine, or hypersensitive to iodine. It should not be used on children younger than 6.

In starting to research this, because it sounds valid, and because I have been an advocate for iodine use for a long time now (I have posted quite a bit of info on it here at the forum- several gems of wisdom regarding iodine, its benefits, how people need it, gov studies, etc.), here is something valuable I wanted to share on this thread:

Dental, Throat, Nasal, Head and Neck Mucosal Procedures During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic

steth-icon150

Dental, Throat, Nasal, Head and Neck Mucosal Procedures During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic:
Hydrogen Peroxide and Povidone Iodine Utilization Before Procedures May Protect Against Spread of COVID-19

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Oral Gel/Rinse/Gargle/Mouthwash
  • Povidone Iodine Oral Rinse/Gargle/Mouthwash
  • Povidone Iodine Nasal Spray or Swab
For either the practitioner or the patient, there are going to be concerns about protection throughout the continued phases of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Any practitioner who comes in close contact with patients must think about protecting not only the patient, but also themselves and then the subsequent patients they will see. Viral particles that one patient sheds may easily be transmitted to the next patient if proper precautions are not taken.

To decrease the risk of viral transmission, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends rinsing the mouth with 1.5% hydrogen peroxide prior to conducting procedures in a dental office (ADA COVIF-19 Center).
Practitioners at Risk

Practitioners who work more closely with areas of potential mucosal or aerosol contact are clearly at a greater risk and have thought about how to reduce transmission. In addition to dentists, several types of practitioners who perform procedures on the respiratory tract and the upper part of the digestive tract have reached out for information.
  • Intubations
  • Nasal and oral procedures
  • Endoscopies
  • Bronchoscopies

dental-nasal-neck-procedures-during-covid19.jpg

They are all being touted for their ability to disrupt Coronaviruses on mucosal surfaces and therefore, potentially limit transmission.

Hydrogen Peroxide & Povidone Iodine Against Coronavirus

Hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse and povidone iodine mouth rinse
have been shown to break the layer of fat on the virus that protects the viral RNA, which is important for replication of the virus once it gets in the cells. The assumption is that these types of mouth rinses kill the virus. Dr Marcelo Araujo, DDS, MS, PhD explains in the video by the American Dental Association how the virus is a layer of fat with RNA inside.

Some patients have a milder form of the disease, some differ in the frequency of flare ups, and others have a more severe level of disease.

VIDEO: American Dental Association (ADA)
Should Dentists Have Patients Use Hydrogen Peroxide or Povidone Mouthrinses Before Procedures?

Dr. Dave Preble, Dr. Marcelo Araujo and Dr. Mia Geisinger discuss why some dentists have considered using commonly used preprocedural mouthrinses such as 1.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.2% povidone. They note that, because SARS-CoV-2 lives in the lungs, the effectiveness of these mouthrinses against the virus would be minimal at best.

...

Povidone Iodine Nasal Spray or Swab and Mouthwash
Utilizing povidone iodine nasal spray and mouthwash during the COVID-19 pandemic may reduce cross infection and protect healthcare workers. The goal is to reduce the viral load in the saliva and nasal secretions in order to reduce transmission of the disease as well as cross contamination back and forth between patients to health care workers. It is not intended to be a cure.

A 0.5% Povidone Iodine solution can be considered for routine use in all patients and healthcare workers for procedures dealing with the respiratory tract and the upper part of the digestive tract . Some examples may be:
  • Intubation
  • Nasal and oral procedures
  • Endoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
*It is recommended for all patients during the COVID-19 Pandemic since there are high rates of asymptomatic cases.

Professional Applications

A preoperational antimicrobial mouthrinse is generally believed to reduce the number of oral microbes. However, chlorhexidine may not be effective to kill 2019-nCoV. Since SARS-CoV-2 may be vulnerable to oxidation, use preprocedural mouthrinse containing oxidative agents such as 1.5% hydrogen peroxide (commercially available in the US) or 0.2% povidone, for purpose of reducing the salivary load of oral microbes, including potential 2019-nCoV carriage. A preprocedural rinse would be most useful in cases when rubber dams cannot be used.
“Since SARS-CoV-2 may be vulnerable to oxidation, use 1.5% hydrogen peroxide (commercially available in the US) or 0.2% povidone as a preprocedural mouthrinse.” Source: American Dental Association
Other goals of using hydrogen peroxide are to protect the patient and the team; to reduce the risk of oral viral transmission and treat gingival inflammation without producing aerosols. The SARS CoV-2 virus first targets the salivary glands.
Having the Perio Tray deliver
deep below the gum will give benefit while the patients are waiting for your care. It can reduce the burden on the immune system.

Georgia schools off to bumpy start as virus spreads and mask politics erupt

Schools should not penalize students for sharing concerns about COVID-19 safety, state Superintendent Richard Woods said Friday in a statement seemingly directed at administrators in some of the state’s earliest-opening districts who have threatened discipline for students who share images showing their schools in a bad light.

“To be very clear, discipline decisions are constitutionally the purview of local boards of education,” he said. “With that said, I want to encourage our districts and schools to operate with transparency, and to ensure that students and staff are not penalized for expressing their concerns.”

The first week of school in some of the state’s earliest-opening districts has been upended by quarantines. Bad press followed viral student photographs of largely maskless crowds in hallways. And the nationwide spotlight on Georgia’s public school reopening comes as the largest districts in the state have yet to resume classes.

In Paulding County, a North Paulding High School student was suspended this week for sharing a widely-circulated photo of a crowd of mostly bare-faced students in transition between classes.

Students later leaked an audio recording of North Paulding Principal Gabe Carmona threatening them with disciplinary action if they post unflattering information about the school.

“There will be consequences for those students or anyone who sends out those pictures, so please, be careful and not send out things,” he said.

The suspended student’s punishment was reversed on Friday and she will face no disciplinary action, according to multiple news outlets.

Photographs from Cherokee County schools have frustrated administrators there as well.

Maskless high students posing shoulder-to-shoulder for senior photos outside Sequoyah High School in Canton and Etowah High School in Woodstock went viral on social media and drew criticism from around the country.

Masks politics follow students to school

While several of the state’s larger school districts are restarting with either virtual classes or a hybrid of online and in-person sessions, Cherokee and Paulding county schools are notable among the early starters for not requiring masks.

One mother of a Cherokee County third-grader says she’s pulling her son out of in-person learning at Liberty Elementary after a teacher told him to take off his mask for a class photo.

“They were shoulder to shoulder, no masks in sight,” Alexandra Smith said. “I don’t care about anyone else’s kid, if you don’t want them in a mask, whatever. My kid knows to wear a mask, and in the picture, he’s holding it.”

More than 140 Cherokee County students or employees have been placed on quarantine in the first week of school there, with 74 of those cases announced on Friday afternoon.

At Bascob Elementary School, an after school program worker tested positive after working Monday, leading to the quarantines of 21 first-graders, 10 kindergarteners and another after school program employee.

A sixth grade student at Creekland Middle School tested positive after attending classes Monday and Tuesday, and 20 students are on quarantine.

Another 23 Cherokee High School students are on quarantine after an 11th grade student and a 12th grade student who are not related both tested positive for COVID-19. The 11th grader last attended school on Wednesday, and the 12th grader last attended on Tuesday.

More than 60 Cherokee County students and employees from four different schools were quarantined by Wednesday. Nine more students and a third-grade teacher at Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy were sent home Thursday after the teacher tested positive for COVID-19, despite showing no symptoms at school.

Sending her son back to school was a very difficult decision for Smith, but she felt it was the best option.

“It was something my husband and I had to discuss a lot,” she said. “I took a leave of absence from work because I’m high-risk. I have pretty severe asthma, but unfortunately, they let me go, so I am home now. My son struggled with the digital learning at the end of last semester. He told me straight up, he hated it.”

Smith said she also felt the digital option would be inferior to in-person learning, so she signed him up for class and made sure to remind him to wear his mask. When she saw him without it in the photo, she asked him why he didn’t have it on. He told her his teacher asked everyone to take their masks off so she could see their smiles.

“And the reason that my son took his mask off is because I’ve also told my son, you listen to your teacher, you don’t talk back, you’re not rude, you do what they tell you. His teacher took all that training I took the time to instill in my child and make him realize the seriousness of this. Gone in one second. And it’s only because he was doing what I told him.”

Smith said her boy has been staying home from school. She’s trying to get him signed up for virtual learning, but Cherokee County, like most other districts that offer a choice between face-to-face or digital learning, only allows students to switch selections after a set amount of time — nine weeks for elementary school and a full semester for middle and high school.

“So now we’re in limbo,” Smith said.

I am just curious about that audience, I never saw them, only heard them.

That may have been staff and he may be in a bunker
Actually, he isn't in a bunker. He's staying in one of his exclusive golf resort. But why? (Or is there a bunker at the resort!!!)
I didn't watch it. Was it the normal press crew?

I had a dream last night -- a nightmare. I won't tell it now but I am now watching what he is doing carefully. I woke up at 2am terrified and didn't sleep again until after 4am. We are in a deep, dark place. I cannot see the way out.

There will be unrest soon. 40 million people -- I'm one of them -- have lost the $600 weekly unemployment kick. For me, that means I now need to survive on $267/week. I don't have kids to feed or a $2000 monthly mortgage. No car payment either. What about those that do? Millions will soon be evicted.

My roommate and I went to an exclusive restaurant the other day to "celebrate" the cutting off of the $600!!! They had people at four other tables in a place that probably holds 200 or more. Talking to the owner, he said that he goes to restaurant meetings weekly and everyone is saying they will need to close soon.

Millions without a place to stay, without money without food. There is only one way to contain that problem IMO (and in my dream).

Eyes open. No fear.

The reason I wondered if it was in a bunker is because of his statement "you won't see me for awhile" and something seem off about the setting. You usually see pictures of the.audience either asking questions or reacting. This time the laughter seemed almost forced or alike a laugh track used in sitcoms.

Maybe I am just imagining it.

MORE READING: A Harvard Magazine article by Jonathan Shaw on August 3, 2020: "Failing the Coronavirus-Testing Test" has a nice summary of Dr. Mina's message https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2020/...

Selected excerpts from that article: “

At the moment, the United States has no semblance of public-health testing” says Michael Mina.

Current tests for active infection with SARS-CoV-2 are highly sensitive—but most are given to suspected COVID-19 patients long after the infected person has stopped transmitting the virus to others. That means the results are virtually useless for public-health efforts to contain the raging pandemic. These PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, which amplify viral RNA to detectable levels, are used by physicians, often in hospital settings, to help guide clinical care for individual patients. In general, members of the public have not had access to such tests outside clinical settings, but even if they did, would find them too expensive for frequent use.

"The astounding realization is that all we’re doing with all of this testing is clogging up the testing infrastructure,” with results arriving a week or more after tests are administered, “and essentially finding people for whom we can’t even act because they are done transmitting," says Mina.

“We need to change the whole script of what it means to test people,” he says. “In our country, we have always assumed that testing belongs in the clinical sphere, in the diagnostic sphere, and has to be run by laboratories or diagnosticians. The result is that we have a system for coronavirus testing…which is flailing, with raging outbreaks occurring.” What the country needs instead are rapid tests, widely deployed, so that infectious individuals can be readily self-identified and isolated, breaking the chain of transmission.

So even though a saliva-based paper test wouldn’t register a positive result for as long as a half or even a full day after the PCR test, it would have great value in identifying pockets of infection that might otherwise be undetected altogether.

The strength of this system is that it would actually abrogate the need for contact tracing, says Mina. “If your goal is not to have a heavy hand over the population”, this is the way to do it, he explains, because it strips away “all of that complexity.”

The U.S. government has spent billions of dollars supporting attempts to develop vaccines and therapeutics. “Developing a good vaccine is very difficult to do,” he points out. “It’s a crapshoot that may or may not work. We’re putting billions more into developing therapeutics [treatments for COVID-19] which is really, really difficult.” With rapid testing, by contrast, “We have solutions, sitting in front of us right now, that are cheaper, would be much quicker to build, and much less risky to actually introduce and roll out. And the only thing standing in the way is that there just doesn't seem to be the will to bring a public-health tool to market.”

Despite concerns about large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from around the country are expected to roll into western South Dakota for the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally beginning Friday and lasting 10 days.

Such a crowd would make it the largest event in the country to take place during the pandemic.

In a survey by the city in May, 60% of Sturgis residents said they preferred to cancel the event. But local business owners who rely on this once-a-year gathering for a huge percentage of their revenues, combined with a realization by city managers that the bikers were going to come to the area no matter what, prompted the city council to sanction the rally.

"The city fathers here wouldn't cancel this rally if it were the middle of World War 7," said Brent Bertelson, who has a home in Sturgis and will be attending his 26th rally this year. He said that "the money the city takes in is a number that Ripley wouldn't believe."

He's not wrong. Sales tax revenue from the rally brought Sturgis, a town of 7,000 people, $26 million last year, according to City Manager Daniel Ainslie.

The event generated $655 million in 2019 across South Dakota, because many of the visitors spend time and money throughout the state as they travel to the rally, and often buy big-ticket items like motorcycles and motor homes while there.

"That's a lot of money for a small state," said Ainslie.

Rod Woodruff, owner of the Buffalo Chip, a campground and concert venue just outside the city where thousands of bikers will stay, explained how critical the rally can be.

"We spend the whole year getting ready to host the motorcycle rally and music festival," he said. "And without it, we wouldn't have a business."

But even though the rally is going ahead, Ainslie noted the city is concerned about COVID-19. It has taken measures both to shrink the event, which normally draws close to 500,000 people, and to mitigate the potential for the virus to spread. It eliminated advertising and canceled parades, events and contests.

During the 10 days, any Sturgis resident who does not want to venture into the crowd can call upon city volunteers to have them shop for and deliver food and other necessities. In the week after the rally, the city will offer mass testing to any resident who interacted with the visitors.

Woodruff said he and other business owners have also taken precautions prompted by the pandemic.

"We will have hand sanitizer everywhere," Woodruff said. "All our food will be takeout. We have signs everywhere reminding people to keep 6 feet apart."

But the Buffalo Chip is not mandating masks. And those familiar with the rally say mask-wearing and social distancing will not be common.

"Those who attend are mavericks," said Joel Heitkamp, a frequent Sturgis attendee and host of a popular radio talk show in the Dakotas. "This is the rebel crowd and they think they are cool because they don't do what society tells them to do."

This attitude might seem fitting in South Dakota, a state that never imposed a lockdown.

"South Dakota is fairly conservative, very independent," said Christine Paige Diers, the former director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. "The same could be said for the motorcyclists. They're an independent lot. They don't want you telling them what you can and can't do."

The age of the motorcyclists is a factor that is both concerning and possibly reassuring. Most of those in attendance are an older demographic -- and more at risk for serious complications from the virus.

"It's not a young person's sport anymore," said Heitkamp. Only half-joking, the rally veteran added, "I'm 58 and if I went this year, I'd be among the youngest people there."

But while an older crowd may be more vulnerable to the disease, Woodruff believes their better judgment will balance those risks. "This is not a college kid crowd. These are mature people, accustomed to having made their own decisions about how to live their lives," he said. "They know what is necessary to calculate and minimize the risks of catching a COVID virus."

Another factor that may minimize the potential spread of the disease is the spread of the land around Sturgis. The hundreds of thousands that come to the rally will not all be in one place. Bertelson pointed out that "the vast majority of people coming here are camping, staying in tents, campers or motor homes. They are all spread out over the Black Hills. And a vast majority of events happen outside."

But in the town itself, Paige Diers painted a troubling picture: "Main Street will be packed with people. Crowds walking up and down the sidewalk, checking out the vendors, looking at the motorcycles. So social distancing would be extremely difficult."

Sturgis itself has not been hit hard by the virus. The city is in Meade County, which has had only one death so far. But this huge gathering comes in a state that had severe outbreaks in meatpacking plants early in the pandemic and that even now is renewing concerns among health officials. According to an internal Federal Emergency Management Agency memo obtained by ABC News, cases are on the rise in the Sioux Falls area with 298 new cases reported in the week ending Aug. 2, a 22.2% increase from the week before.

"You're just adding fuel to a fire," said Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist and ABC News Medical Contributor. "South Dakota is already experiencing increases in transmission. COVID is not under control in South Dakota; it's just not."

He is worried that gatherings like this, with visitors from different locations, have brought infections back to other communities during the pandemic and Sturgis being located in a rural part of the state should be of no comfort. The rally, said Brownstein, could put a huge strain on an area that "does not have the capacity to handle a surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement to ABC News about the rally, "Large gatherings make it difficult to maintain CDC's recommended social distancing guidelines, which may put attendees at risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Any identification of cases following a large gathering would not likely be confirmed until 2-3 weeks after the event."

For Bertelson, such concerns are overblown. "I think people will be cautious," he said. "But rational people informed of the facts are not that scared of this COVID."

He called Sturgis "a freedom rally," adding, "Bikers are big believers in freedom. I've heard from people tired of being locked down and being told what they can and can't do. A lot of these people are saying, 'I'm going to Sturgis.'"

I know a lot of Covid-19 trackers have been posted already, but this site will not only track the cases by the county, but it also has a graph plotting the cases from the beginning of this year--- for those that like graphs and like to see (visually) what the trend is in your county. The graph is about 1/4th of the way down the page. Pittsburgh, PA Coronavirus Information - Safety Updates, News and Tips - The Weather Channel | Weather.com You can change the zip code, or type the name of your county/state -- I just happened to be looking at Pittsburgh's data when I posted this link.

CDC Reports: 26.3% Less “All Deaths” in 2020 than 2018 – Gobbledygook Coronavirus Math
by Tom Williams May 10, 2020

Dr. Jonathan Temte, associate dean for public health and community engagement at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health in addressing the argument that numbers showing the prevalence of COVID-19 are overstated, Temte said that’s wrong.

Really? Let’s fact check this – be patient, read carefully, and take the time to walk through the data slowly.

According to Temte, an actual death count doesn’t exist, in part because of statutes such as Wisconsin’s that only require providers to report pediatric deaths from influenza. It’s voluntary to report flu deaths from adults. Additionally, Wisconsin does not require influenza testing to be reported. “Influenza ascertainment has always been nebulous,” he said. ‘In the best circumstances, we can assess what happens within a clinical population.” Temte has been part of a clinic-based surveillance program run out of five family medicine clinics in Dane County over the past 11 years.

Temte pointed to a graphic from the CDC that comes out weekly and reports the percentage of deaths in the U.S. due to pneumonia, influenza, and now COVID-19. During the 2009-10 influenza season, 8.1% of people who died had either influenza or pneumonia. Another bad influenza year in 2017-18 saw this pneumonia – and flu-related deaths peak at 10%. But the week ending April 11 this year hit a record 23.5% of deaths by COVID-19, influenza or pneumonia compared to the total number of deaths.

Temte said each week, the CDC reports the percentage of deaths in the U.S. due to pneumonia, influenza, and now COVID-19. During the 2009-10 influenza season, 8.1% of people who died had either influenza or pneumonia. During 2017-18 those pneumonia- and flu-related deaths peaked at 10%.

First off, Temte assertion of the 23.5% is wrong, it should be 18.84%. Ok, perhaps we are being a stickler for details but accuracy is important. The point is that this number is a cherry-picked weekly number. When looking at the “to date” percentages it is 3.87%. Well within the norms of prior years. I have pre-downloaded and sorted the spreadsheet (see tab 2020-WorkSheet) here – but please feel free to do this exercise yourself. Note that the data could have changed since Temte made his assertions. For the year 2020 according to Temte citation (CDC data) the “All Deaths” rate through May 2, 2020, was 787,181.

Taking the data from the CDC Weekly Counts of Deaths by State and Select Causes, 2014-2018, then selecting for “All Deaths” for the year 2018 through May 05, 2018, you come up with 1,066,832 deaths. I have pre-downloaded and sorted the spreadsheet (see tab 2018) here – but please feel free to do this exercise yourself.

Through the same period, the CDC “All Death” total numbers are 279,651‬ less (or 26.3% less) in 2020 than in 2018.

So we all become hysterical and make a run on toilet paper? YES, the numbers are in question and our health authorities must explain. Right Wire Report are not virology doctors, but we can do the math. This is also not to say there are not people dying and the COVID-19 virus is not something to worry about. But we must keep it in perspective.

As Right Wire Report has said before, there have been many reports coming in questioning the current COVID-19 death rates. Here and here are just a few examples. Here at Right Wire Report, we have as well called into question these numbers – see here, here and here. Are in fact COVID-19 deaths being grossly misrepresented? Whether the accounting of the statistical data is nefarious or not is yet another question. All this matters, as it is driving many major policy-making decisions by politicians.

The U.S. economy lost 20.5 million jobs in April 2020 and the unemployment rate is near 15%. The global economy is heading to a global depression based on data that makes little sense. If the truth of the underlying data is not well understood it will have catastrophic results.

COVID-19 are numbers overstated? So through the same period, the “All Death” total numbers are 279,651‬ less (or 26.3% less) in 2020 than in 2018. Hysteria?

The KEY to COVID-19? ER Doctor Shares Exciting Breathing Treatment Method
•Aug 10, 2020

Glenn Beck
ry Care Physician Richard Bartlett says the way hospitals have been telling to treat COVID-19 from the beginning is ENTIRELY nonsensical: patients with symptoms are sent home with Tylenol and told to return when their condition has progressed to "severe." But a severe case sometimes isn't treatable at all. So, Dr. Bartlett began using on patients a anti-inflammatory that directly targets infections in the lungs: a steroid taken with a nebulizer. When it was begun early, some of this patients never developed severe symptoms. One woman, on chemotherapy for two types of blood cancers, began feeling symptom-free within days. This type of breathing treatment has been on the market for 25 years. It's cost effective, and anybody can do it at home...so why aren't more doctors following suit? Disclaimer: the information in this clip is the opinion of Dr. Bartlett and not the opinion of the CDC, WHO, or local health authorities.

COVID-19 Pandemic Update 101: T Cell Immunity vs. Antibodies & Prior Exposure to Other Coronaviruses
•Aug 10, 2020

MedCram - Medical Lectures Explained CLEARLY

The relationship between antibodies for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and immunity, vaccine efficacy, and spread of COVID-19 has received significant attention. Dr. Seheult is back to illustrate why T cells have received less attention than antibodies, but may be more important to long term immunity from COVID-19. Dr. Seheult also discusses how previous infections with common coronaviruses may provide some immunity to SARS-CoV-2, and the hypothesis that reducing the inoculum (initial dose) of SARS-CoV-2 might result in less symptom severity (This video was recorded August 10, 2020).

Within Days I Was Able To Breathe: NYC Democratic Councilman Says Hydroxychloroquine Saved His Life

Source: Zero Hedge

An immunocompromised New York City Councilman who underplayed the severity of his COVID-19 diagnosis in April now says that it was actually much worse, and hydroxychloroquine saved his life.

Paul Vallone, a Democrat who represents Queens, says he took the drug along with a ‘Z-pack’ antibiotic and drastically improved within days.

I couldn’t breathe, very weak, couldn’t get out of bed. My doctor prescribed it. My pharmacy had it. Took it that day and within two to three days I was able to breathe,” Vallone told the New York Post, adding “Within a week I was back on my feet.
Vallone went public with his coronavirus diagnosis in an April 1 Twitter post, saying he was experiencing “mild symptoms,” his actual condition was considerably more severe. Vallone’s initial prognosis was particularly grim, as he also suffers from sarcoidosis, an auto-immune disease that attacks his lungs.

“We were in panic mode when I went down because I didn’t have a lot of immune response,” he said. “I needed something to stay alive.” –New York Post

Vallone’s brother, former City Councilman Peter who currently serves as a civil court judge in Queens, is now a believer in the drug.

“I guess all those doctors who are prescribing it are right. This drug is already on the market and the patent is up so it’s cheap. A new drug won’t be. So big money does not want this drug to be used. Always follow the money,” Peter said in a May 12 Facebook post.

Paul, responding in the comments section, said “[It] saved my life.

Hydroxychloroquine, or HCQ, is a commonly used anti-malaria drug also used for decades to treat lupus and arthritis. It became covid-19 treatment non-grata, however, after President Trump touted the inexpensive drug earlier this year – admitting to taking a course as a prophylactic against the disease.

“You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the frontline workers before you catch it. The frontline workers — many, many are taking it,” Trump said in May.

Studies on the drug have been mixed but mostly positive, with recent evidence pointing to significant results against COVID-19 when used early in the disease’s progression.

Paul Vallone reflected on his April diagnosis, saying “At that time, there was only fear and panic, he offered hope in a possible treatment when there was none. With my sarcoidosis and then my COVID symptoms, It basically saved me. For that my family will always be thankful.”

I don't know if it has been posted on this thread or not---but here's something else to keep an eye on--- and it just may be good news for tea drinkers. (Black tea has lots of L theanine also... not just green tea). More Evidence that Green Tea + Zinc Might Be Able to Help Fight Covid | Zero Hedge | Zero Hedge Here's part of what was written in that article:
Green Tea May Fight Covid

A group of Indian scientists have shown that - at least in a petri dish - EGCG can powerfully target numerous key structures in this coronavirus:

Various studies have been done for discovering the antiviral activity of tea polyphenols, especially EGCG.
***
As evident from the mechanisms of action of EGCG in various viruses, it is a wide spectrum antiviral agent with its mechanism differing from infection to infection.
***
In a study investigating phytochemical mediated inhibition of SARS-CoV 3CLpro, molecular docking and in vitro studies were performed to screen different naturally obtained flavonoids. It was observed that EGCG with a docking score of −11.7, showed the best in silico activity among all the compounds tested. In vitro studies showed that EGCG exhibited 85% inhibition of 3CLpro at a concentration of 200 μM and had an IC50 value of 73 ± 2 μM (Thi Thanh Hanh et al., 2012).
***
Tahir ul Qamar et al. showed that the 3CLpro structure of SARS-CoV-2 is highly similar to that of SARS-CoV, suggesting the validity of earlier studies in the present outbreak (Tahir Ul Qamar et al., 2020). Recently, another study recommended EGCG as one of the most potential inhibitor of 3CLpro among the phytochemicals found in nature on basis of molecular docking studies (Khaerunnisa et al., 2020). Hence on these foundations, we can expect EGCG to be a potential inhibitor of 3CLpro for the treatment of COVID-19.
***
EGCG showed a very high binding affinity and a low inhibition constant among all the phytoconstituents screened, especially in the case of 6vw1, which is a potential target of SARS-CoV-2.
***
EGCG exhibited better binding with the viral proteins and hence, is expected to show better antiviral activity than the reference drugs, remdesivir and chloroquine (Mf et al., 2020).
***
EGCG was found to inhibit the ATPase activity of GRP78, thus making it less flexible (Ibrahim et al., 2019). Inferring from the studies by Ibrahim et al. and Bhattacharjee et al., we can expect EGCG to be a potential inhibitor of COVID-19 S protein-GRP78 binding site (Bhattacharjee et al., 2015).
The Indian paper also documents that theanine - another abundant substance in tea - targets many key structural sites in Covid. The following graphic summarizes these concepts

Also, for those that don't like zerohedge, I believe this study is one that backs up what was written above: Antiviral activity of green tea and black tea polyphenols in prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19: A review
The results and conclusion as written isn't very exciting, but read the study and you will see that it has promise. (I even saw a mention about glioblastoma in this study---another subject I'm looking into --- since I know someone who has that and has so far survived over 1 year with a combination of conventional treatment and a very strict doctor ordered- keto diet).

Of course, like quercetin, zinc is very much involved in the mechanism and if I remember correctly, tea is one of the foods that is high in quercetin too.
