CHAT I Was Attacked By A Pitbull Dog This Morning

It is a solid fact that pit bulls account for way more human deaths than any other dog even though many other dog breeds are much more popular.
That said, when I was young we had a lab that one day attacked someone at our house. Caused no real injuries but that was that dog's last day on earth.

Nothing wrong with PitBulls it's the stupid ass owners.

Although there is some bonus points, people cross the street when I am walking my pitbull, it's like a gun you can pet LOL
I love my pitt. He's 12 years old and would give his life to defend us. Smartest and best dog I've ever had, but then again he was properly trained at a young age. He does not go out without a leash. People need to be responsible with their dogs- training, supervising, and leashing them.

Also, when you have a big dog (or "bully breed") you must be extra assertive with them to constantly remind them YOU are the alpha.

Yes, same here: my HO policy lists pits, chow chows, and several others.

I know some swear by pits, but none will be coming into my home. Around here, there are some very bad blood lines. It's not a breed I will take a chance on. Our shelters are filled with them.

Neither here nor there.
We live in a low-crime, semi-rural area but a former co-worker was attacked by a crazed motorist with no apparent motive. He was severely beaten and had broken bones. If you do not yell loudly when attacked, no one is likely to come to help you right away. . .

Thread drift here, I live in a college town so lots of bicyclists. For some reason and it's almost always a male no matter the race, some drivers go full retard when they see someone on a bicycle. When I first moved here there was an accident down town, back when main street was still one way, and an angry crazed white male drove up ONTO the sidewalk and ran over a older woman riding her bicycle. I'll never understand the mentality of those types of drivers. I'm pretty sure they're the types that speed up when they see an animal in the street in hopes of killing it.

In Sacramento, the culprits were women in Humvees. As a pedestrian, I nearly got hit by a woman who drove onto the sidewalk, and another time was nearly hit on a crosswalk by another that basically aimed for me, occupied by two women who were laughing about it.

Hated that damn city...

When I was a child I was bitten by our dog, a collie german shepard mix. I was scared of big dogs for years. I'm in the process of looking for a puppy now and the immediate disqualifier is it being a pitt mix. Just not willing to take a chance on one.

Hi Rabbit

my dog and I were involved in a pit bull attack last fall. I know how traumatizing it is. So glad you weren't injured more. You'll probably have some bruises. Shame people are such jerks with dogs. And dogs like that have no business EVER being out with the public. I'd prefer them all 'gone'. There are too many good dogs out there to have a bad one.

thorr mentioned pepper spray - I just bought some. I'll be carrying it now walking and biking.
I'll add that after the attack, I found out that this owner (he lived in a trailer on my neighbor's farm) had adopted this dog from a pit rescue about 3 months or so prior - he told me AFTER the attack the pit was a trained fighting dog as had scars on it's head and a broken canine!!!!!! What the heck? He had no fence, not tied up, no leash...nothing for that dog. And my neighbors that allowed him to put a trailer on their property were told that dog was a fighting dog and they allowed it!!! - no fence, no controls, nothing. My neighbors said he 'paid' well. (Dang! Sold out by my neighbors!) Needless to say, I was livid with my neighbors. I spread the word about the pit and when the rest of the farmers found out what happened they were livid too as we all have dogs...some wander around on their farms = they are all good, friendly dogs - no fighting...that dog could have seen their dogs out and about and attacked their dogs. And no one would have been close enough to save their dogs. Trained fighting dogs are viscous to other dogs!

Pit bull rescues suck! Sounds like they don't care about the dog's history. Just adopt them all out.....

While at the urgent care with my dog - my neighbor lady came with me - she started confessing a few things.....

Found out these idiot neighbors had a pit bull prior to moving to their farm that almost killed their rottie and they grew up as puppies together. The knew how pits can be!! Came home from work one day and found the rottie's chest shredded. Took the dog to a pit rescue. Good Lord!! What's wrong with people?! Setting up someone else!!

AND these same neighbors admitted their 'frasier' terrier dog (forget the breed name) almost killed their chihuahua - came home from work yet again to a mess of blood and a torn up dog - poor dog never recovered. Died a year or so later.

We had a mystery in the neighborhood for years = the farm across the county road lost their chihuahua - everyone looked and looked - nothing - thought coyotes got it. Then the body was found shredded in this same idiot neighbor's field about 3 weeks or so later. This happened shortly before these neighbor's 'frasier' terrier dog almost killed their chihuahua. So mystery solved. Their dog killed it! OMG! What clueless people!!!! Some people should NEVER have a dog.

I've had 6 GSDs (two K-9s and one cadaver dog) and 3 other breeds on my farm - NEVER had a dog fight, NEVER had any problems with my dogs and neighbor dogs or people - all good dogs.

And I don't like pits either. But have friends that love them. And friends that have had to put them down for aggression. My sister put her pit bull cross down - only two years old - bit my mom twice for no reason and started chewing on the old dog. She got it from the pound as a puppy and she had lots of dog classes with it. Even took it back to class for the aggression. Didn't change anything. A real shame.

Thats fear based ignorance, just like covid. Pits aren't naturally mean, the morons that own them make them that way, period. The dog ran into the ops legs, omg put that dog down. Not a tooth mark on them. Real vicious. And to the ass poisoning dogs, id wipe your seed from this planet of you did that to my dog...
This is probably thread drift but Trouble, is that your bull terrier? I've wanted one forever.

Life is better in flip flops
My wife was walking our 14-year-old collie on a leash a half block from our home when a doberman and a similarly sized mutt ran through an open gate and attacked them. The owners were in the yard and quickly halted the attack. At the request of the dog owners' next door neighbors, my wife called the police and a deputy had a talk with the owners; we did not file a formal complaint as there were no injuries. It seems the main problem is that people are lazy and inattentive; they will leave their house to get in their car with their dog unleashed. I bicycle 6-10 miles daily and am attacked at least four times a month. I yell loudly at the dog(s) and am accurate at hitting their face(s) with pepper spray if required. I carry a pistol in my handlebar bag for defense against two-legged predators. We live in a low-crime, semi-rural area but a former co-worker was attacked by a crazed motorist with no apparent motive. He was severely beaten and had broken bones. If you do not yell loudly when attacked, no one is likely to come to help you right away. . .
Our oldest DS rides about 30 miles a day. He told me just this morning that on a rural road in the middle of the county a group of 4 dogs ran up on him all of them quite large he said. I asked him if he had any pepper spray and he said no. I said if they're running around 10 miles out in the middle of no where, they are a pack and he needs to get pepper spray. Hopefully he will take my advice.

Yes, that looks like my list. I think filas and ridgebacks were also listed. They aren't common back East, but they end up on farms out there sometimes.

The most common farm dogs here are border collies (and relatives), black labs, "mutts," and all manner of terriers! Given the downturn in the economy, the terriers have gotten quite popular. The "mixes" are inexpensive to buy, don't eat a lot, are healthy and friendly, and are generally long-lived. They aren't on any insurance blacklists.

Pit bulls and Akitas are two breeds I have zero use for. They're fine one minute and psychotic the next.

There's a neighbor near us who walks their Akita in the park where I walk Astor. When Astor was younger he had no fear-he'd go up to the biggest dogs and sniff them. Not the Akita though-he'd get behind my legs.
When a dog tries to stay away from another dog there's a problem. Dogs are a great judge of human character-and fellow dogs as well.

Rabbit, so glad it wasn't worse but being shuck up is bad enough and so uncalled for. I try to judge dogs like people on an individual basis. Some good and some very bad.

My problems are with the dumped dogs from nearby towns. More often than not, the big ones have cancer or some other expensive disease -OR- they are pit bulls, probably dumped because the owner was billed 80K from the city to buy pit bull insurance.

So far, my neighbors have shot them. Stray dogs often bother the chickens and livestock.

On TB every waking moment
I adopted a mutt. He was black, short and sturdy. He looked to be part pit, I had two dogs. The other was a small sheep dog type. I used to hold the pit in my lap. (Admittedly he was heavy.) I had him for about 9 months.

One day he growled at me when I was feeding him. He then snapped at me. A week later, he tore the skin clear off the other dog's leg.

He was the only dog I have ever had the pound destroy (with no option of adoption.)

In my job as a medical claims payment clerk, I paid several claims of vicious dogs who mauled the family's kids, were kept, and mauled again. I won't keep a vicious animal.

I was in my driveway fifteen or twenty feet away from my front door. The dog is never loose.

I have a seven-foot tall metal fence attached to the chain link in my backyard between our yards, but the metal stops short behind my storage shed but, the chain-link continues.
If I need to get anything behind my shed I have to call them on the phone to put the dog up until I finish. I don't do anything ever to provoke a dog but this one growls and lunges at the fence if it sees me. He does it to the other neighbors that border their backyard too.

I must really be getting old this has really shaken me up.
That ain’t old age baby. It’s wisdom (and an adrenaline dump) Big difference.

So glad that you came out of this ok. But I have to say: think about the future.

People who control their dogs ... I’d bet ... have zero to worry about. Seems simple really

This is true for our area too. I know there are some that are very sweet, but in our area the dog fighters breed them and sell them. I've always been drawn to bully breeds and have GSD's, but pits aren't a favorite of mine.

Nothing worse than a viscous dog

BS My neighbor who is a wonderful kind person had her Pit bull turn on her one day out of nowhere and she was barely able to get away from it. they have a screw loose somewhere in their brain. attack after attack happens here in the desert.
The breed needs to be destroyed.
Oh wow. I didn't realize that. People always tell me that pit bulls are so "sweet", but here you say they got a screw loose and can turn on ya. Scary. I can believe it. I LOVE dogs, and never afraid of them, but i AM afraid of pit bulls.

I know a lady who is nuts about Pit Bulls...got one, awhile back from a breeder.....gloats about what a special dog it is. Sorry.......no one is convincing me.....I’ve read too many horror stories of where a Pit has snapped and killed someone.

I recall hearing a well known Dr. tell about a neighbor’s Pit escaping his yard and running into the Dr’s yard, visciously attacking his dog. Punching and kicking the Pit did nothing......the only thing that worked was stabbing the Pit to death.
