Most of the affected persons are likely in urban areas, and for that reason, most of them are potential Kerry voters. The powers that be do not postpone the election. Bush wins a close election.
This will be followed by complaints/lawsuits/states seceeding from the Union/etc., based upon the premise that "every vote is sacred", and that Bush "stole the election" by refusing to postpone it. Most of the persons making this argument will be the same ones that are now complaining the Bush is planning to steal the election by postponing it. The contradiction will be lost on them. The more avid conspiracy buffs among these people will have "proof" that Bush was actually responsible for the terrorist attack.

However, in the case of a dispute, the constitutional principle is that it should be resolved in the House of Representives and not the Supreme Court. The Republicans controlled the House (disputes are by state delegations). They were too friggen chicken to honor the constitututional process and vote for President. The Supreme Court bailed them out. As a byproduct, we have now set up the Judicial Branch with more power than could possibly be imagined. In 2004, an electronic voting box issue? Let's ask the court. Wonderful ain't it? 
We lost more power in the 2000 election than most people realize. After that, the Supreme have been unduly cocky. Haven't you noticed?

Not only did Bush win legitimately in Florida, but there were substantial irregularities in Missouri, where the election was stolen from Ashcroft. The extending of poll hours in Democratic neighborhoods (due to claims of irregularities) was planned before election day. [I don't remember who won the presidential vote in Missouri.]
Also, is anyone from New Mexico? I heard on a talk show some weeks ago that there was proven fraud in New Mexico to the extent that Bush should have had those electoral votes -- and it wouldn't have mattered how the courts decided in Florida! The caller from New Mexico couldn't believe that people outside New Mexico hadn't heard all about it.

This is an interesting thread. It demonstrates the reason I am much more concerned than I have been previously. My reasons will be found below the following observations.
Sadly, the older I get, and the loonier you lefties become, the more I become shoved by the irrationality of your thinking toward the conservative side of the aisle. Whenever I hear or read nonsense about the last election being "stolen" in Florida, I instantly and automatically discount anything else said by the speaker or poster. For I can only assume that they are truly ignorant regarding our republic and the constitution, or have an agenda that transcends the laws we all live by.
This is the reason I am more apprehensive than ever about the near future. We are now a "divided house", and as the political conventions approach, I fear a repeat of the summer of '68, but with an added and more dangerous element. People then looked on in horror and disbelief at the behavior of those on the left, but they learned a lesson, and this time will not, I fear, just look. There is the beginning of a counter-movement that will take action, and therefore the beginning of civil war.
Add in the terrorists, and we will not know who is actually behind destructive incidents, nor which of the three sides they are on. This will make it more difficult for the government to decide what action to take, and I expect we will see a further curtailing of civil liberties, which will then inflame the left and the right even more.
I see nothing but a downward spiral. And, I blame those of you on the left who would use the judicial system to get what you want when voting goes against you. This is what was going on in Florida. It is what is going on with just about every social issue the left endorses.
My problem with the left is that there is no respect for the rights of others, no respect for traditional values, and no respect for the constitution. Every issue is argued in isolation. The end justifies the means. There is no effort made to consider the consequences in the long run. Justification of any particular issue is based on sentiment and emotion, and no thought or logic is given to the long-term effects on the social contract.
I am beginning to think that John Titor is/was right about civil war starting here in the US about the time of this fall's election. Whether he is/was a time traveller or not isn't relevant, and doesn't matter.

My main whine is that you guys just don't think, you "feel", and react on the basis of those feelings, like toddlers throwing tantrums.
At the rate we are going, we have more to fear from you than we do the terrorists, and the only thing left for me to wonder about is what you will say when the next terrorist hit comes? I can only assume it will be someone else's fault, and if we had just put you all in charge, it would never have happened, right?

Care to respond to my thoughts? Do you like the Judicial Branch picking a President? Five guys/gals who have usurped final authority over the Constitution. The democrats forced the issue, but the republicans fought on their territory.

P.S. I probably would have voted for Bell or maybe Breckridge in 1860. This discussion is by no means a liberal/conservative issue. IMHO - The "liberals" advance a cause and "conservatives" fortify the position.

CygnusXI, thanks for the list which is historical fact. I would also add that the Electoral Vote IS the Constitutional way, i.e., America's Process and the Supreme court laid down the law of the land. Period.
We were all told in high school civics class, those that were paying attention, how a president might lose the popular vote yet still win in the electoral college. When it finally happened, those that didn't pay attention were confused. Many still are.

On the original thread, I've been feeling rather calm lately, though in my heart and mind I know there is more to this new warning that before, but I haven't done anything about the gnawing feelling. On my way home yesterday morning, I came upon a raging fire in a two story home here in SFO not three small blocks from by home and on the same street. It's my first close up of a fire and I instantly felt helpless and in shock. I got home by a different route and had to just let it out for a few seconds. I composed myself knowing things could actually get worse in the very near future and that I would need to be cool and collected so that I will be able to make the right decisions as well as to "lead" my helpless neighbors so that they won't panic.
Can't we all just get along while the SHTF? It won't matter who did what if we can't stay alive and work with eachother.

You have spoken for many of us with your post above. Yes, the political path that we're on will lead only to another civil conflagration. I would hope, for history's sake, that we do not become confused about what the war was about.
I do not see clearly what lies ahead, or how we will get there. But, this much I know: My own patience with our brethern from the Left is being strained. All of this cannot end well.

IMHO: The process used back then should have been used today. The House of Representives - Not the Supremes. With regard to President Jackson:
In 1832, the U.S. Supreme Court led by Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that state laws could not be applied to Indians. This ruling, in essence, denied that the state of Georgia had the power to remove the Cherokee from their land in Georgia... See Worcester v. Georgia.
President Jackson opposed the Supreme Court's ruling and refused to enforce it, saying, "Mr. Marshall has made his decision now let him enforce it." In the end, the Cherokee were removed by gun point to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. Thousands of Cherokee died in transit; the event is now known as the Trial of Tears.
