CHAT Well, I can see why people would rather collect Covid-enhanced unemployment than work

Jeff B.

Don’t let the Piss Ants get you down…
I find this information very timely, as I was just told that next Friday will be my last day.

I need to review my “packet”, but I understand there is a reasonable amount of severance in it.

I’ll need to see how severance and unemployment work in regard to each other.

Good for me?? Taxpayers are paying for every penny of the “extra.” That’s not good for ANYONE. And certainly not good for employers desperate for workers!
It is what it is. We know TPTB have been working and waiting to ruin this once great Country for a LONG time. Their perseverance is paying off. NOTHING to be done about it. What will be is destined to be. I've read the back of The Book...I know how it ends and Who wins.

I didn’t say it wasn’t good for me on a personal basis. But DAMN! Somebody has to pay for that, KWIM? I feel very guilty getting that much. It seems obscene to me.
No one will ever pay for it... they are printing it as needed. Crazy times... Now I wish I hadn't retired.

I can only imagine the very large number of people who would 'like' to be laid off.
Me! My boss just pushes back the dates for when he expects work. I picked up some contract work with another company after not getting paid for half of last year, but that contract expires in October. The money from that job is barely covering the bills now because I had to max out my credit cards last year. I wish my boss had laid me off for 3 months instead of just repeatedly telling me, “The reports should be ready in two more weeks.” :(

I was injured a while back working for my state.
I went to Worker's Comp first.
Worker's Comp denied the claim
I went to get the UE benefits, and was turned away since "its a Worker's Comp matter."
It seems I'll have to sue to see anything (lawyer says they are denying almost every claim now).

As of a week ago, I've been 9 months without making a dime.
Lawyer says it'll be at least another year before the lawsuit goes through and I might get something (minus their cut, of course).
On the plus side, I can walk again now.

Moral:
Be happy with what you get......it can always be worse.

You could buy us all frozen pizzas since ya threw a cravin' on us- and ya could hire someone to make our bombs and add our who is on/has posted to this thread and and and :D

I've gotten 2 letters telling me I can draw $419 a week I unemployment. That's not including the extra they are tossing in. I'm just going to keep on working.

I'm not understanding the math here. Max amount of State UI in Texas, is $541 a week, and $300 Federal a week. A claim is two weeks, so that is $1682. Unless this is for three weeks with taxes withheld, they might have overpaid you, and they will want the overage back.

I don’t know. Txstew. I filed for my first two weeks. I got $834. They said one week is not paid unless you run out of benefits. Then I filed two weeks later and got $2505. I don’t see how it could be for three weeks. I’m afraid to call them this time - lol.

Yes it is cray cray. But this situation is temporary. Either the gubmint will get a large number of citizens addicted to the financial crack of ‘free’ money to take it away (won’t that lead to fun times) or they give free money away until the money is worthless and buys nothing.

Either way the grand experiment will end badly.

For those who wait until the free money train stops to start looking for a job, they may find there no longer are any jobs.

Put some of that money in some long shot cryptos and you might be rich in a few years.. :hmm:

It's crazy though because I'm seeing businesses all over Florida with signs for hire. I don't know if it's just a Florida thing or not but if one wishes to find a job they will in Florida. Maybe consider a move to Florida?

I wouldn’t move to ANYWHERE on the east coast for sny amount of money.

And I couldn’t live on $15 an hour. And frankly, with 40 years as a software developer, that wage would kinda be an insult (at least before I retire.) Now, I’ve worked for wages that low during recessionary periods, to try and save the house. But I don’t have a family or a mortgage these days. Things are much different.

I don't think there is a business in my neighborhood that doesn't have a 'help wanted' sign, from fast food, to HVAC, to gas stations, and anything with manual labor... that is STL metro area... I think the unemployment in MO has just been too good.

I don’t have a “honey” to make me “honeydo” lists.
Those honey do lists retired about 5 years ago.

Now it's just for upkeep of the place. Like mowing, repairing mowers, finding parts to repair mowers, in between rains, cuz all my work is outside. Spending half a day trying to find, not only an inner tube for lawn tractor, but a place to put it in, if I find one somewhere like TSC that might sell the tube, but won't install. I don't have a lot, I have 1 1/4 acres so a push mower is out. And I only have one recliner and keep it indoors. Even with a four foot deck takes almost 2 hours, Then weed eat, and sometimes that needs some work replacing the eater part, and greasing the gears annually.

Then I have to roundup the driveway, and the edge of the yard so the woods won't crepe into the yard, especially the kind with runners which always knows "It's the yard".

Then spray the yard for weeds, because if you don't, you'll be mowing every few days instead of every two weeks.

Since I got that done, now I'm waiting for the rain and soggy ground to dry, to put down termite drugs, and then spraying the house for boring bees. I've built traps which work pretty good, but don't get them all. Meaning earlier, I spent several days cutting, nailing, and designing those bee traps. Not to mention driving to town to get the wood. Which every few weeks needs emptying (upkeep).

When it's raining I'm inside so like reloading, researching genealogies, Bible Studies, reading Preston and Child books.

And then during the two week off period from mowing, I need to put water repellant on the deck, which needs to be cleaned first, and since I've got the cleaner out, I might as well clean the house for mold and mildew on the north side. All for upkeep and maintenance.

And since we had a storm come through last night and lost power for 3 hours, there are limbs, big limbs laying all over the yard which need picking up.

Most people do upkeep on their auto's like change oil, and don't consider that honeydo lists.

So like I said I haven't had a day off since I retired, but I don't mind either.

And having a honey for nearly 45 years is awesome, so those were cool too.

Don't miss understand or read anything into it. I like staying busy and working on my own stuff. I like living in the country which does mean extra work due to a larger place, and we bought an old 1930's home and wanted to fix it up myself, enjoyed doing that, but like don't do that unless you mean it.

At my age the doc wants me to have an exercise program, and I understand the reason for that, upping the heart rate, but like it's so boring. So when he asks about it I just say I stay active.

What he doesn't know is working on your own stuff CAN make your heart rate go up.

Went to change the mower blades (3 of them) so it would be easier to pull if I got the deck out to do. To start you need to loosen the idler arm for the tension on the deck's drive belt. Just touched it and the spring broke. I'm either super human, or the thing was near rusted into. Well was pulling the deck anyway so no problem and it's good it did it while it was out, or I would have been wondering what was wrong with the deck while mowing. Easy fix.

Got it out, changed the first blade and no problem, grabbed the second, and the spindle wiggled a little. Well I could get by with that if I filled it full of grease for this year anyway. Grabbed the third and it wiggled even more. Well I've got the deck off might as well change them out.

Went to stand the deck up by the mower so it would all be out of the way in the shed, and the deck slid down and fell, breaking the valve stem on the back tire.

So that kind of stuff will get your heart racing and your blood pressure up, but quick. Even make your mouth want to say 4 letter words, and we ain't talking about Ford, food, or love either.

So don't need no exercise program to get my heart rate up.

Retirement, it's an adventure almost everyday.

I have some software classes I need to take. I guess I might as well get started.

Angular.js
Node.js
React

And if I want to code for mobile devices, Swift
In California you cannot get UI if you are”officially” training because it makes you unavailable fir taking a position offered to you according to my friend who did that.
So know the rules in Texas.
Also she said she sets aside a portion for state taxes since they do withhold state taxes but do withhold federal taxes if you ask for that.

Ya, and they waived income taxes on it in 2020, so its tax free income assuming they do it again in 21
They did not waive the taxes, they delayed them. Friends on UI insurance set aside the amount they would owe in taxes fir the future bill. My friend told me she got a notice of tax forgiveness for folks who got under eleven thousand in UI in 2020 from the federal government. She received $22,000. So it does not apply to her. She still owed state taxes.

What the government should do is allow anyone over 60 ... if they want ... collect their full retirement SSI without penality early. And get Medicare.

It would open the job pool to a lot of well paying jobs. I’d be done in a heartbeat. This economy and Industry 4.0 is really going to change the future more than people know.

I don’t want to be part of it

No state tax in Texas.
Wow! No wonder so many Californians are fleeing to Texas...among other states. Hubby keeps suggesting we move to Washington to be nearer our youngest son and grand babies. He would get an automatic 10% raise just because of the state tax situation. Sounds good, but I'm a native Californian who is a homebody doesn't have a single drop of wanderlust in me...I'm perfectly happy in my own backyard.

Dennis, I understand that you would rather work for your pay than accept unemployment benefits and I commend you for that. But, for a while at least, you have some breathing room to take care of you and the pups. Enjoy this time while it lasts because it won't last forever. Take care:dpaw:

EVERYONE on my team is away or quarantined. "The boy stood on the burning deck, whence all but he had fled..." All I can say is the taxpayers got their money's worth outta me yesterday, today, and certainly will tomorrow. IT is a harsh mistress.
Yep. Met my ex to sign for my stimulus money. Got it. He told me he is making more money now than when he was working. Getting $503 a wk unemployment (he was fired) plus $300 wk covid money plus $$1,600 month SS I think that's about $5,000 a month! (He will soon have to pay Alimony)
So I see now why no one wants to work anymore.

Good on you.

Even if I had an extensive knowledge base in code, the thought of learning multiple new languages would be damned intimidating to me.

Knowledge is power.

Heck, if they would just give a lump sum of everything they have taken from me for social security and medicare taxes over the years at the statutory interest rate in turn I would agree not to draw any social security or medicare benefits in the future. Since it's only printed funny money anyway they are off the hook and I would take that currency and turn it into real money while you can still get it. Would much rather have retirement funds based off of real money instead of pretend money.
