CHAT Well, I can see why people would rather collect Covid-enhanced unemployment than work

I just got my first full UI check with the Covid addition.

$2500. For two weeks.

WTF???
Compare that to the traditional MS unemployment check - 265.00 a week. Do you want taxes taken out of of that, sir?

And the non-production gross pay of the traditional factory worker 680.00 a week.

AND with production pay, of around 1000.00 (but are talking about really working) a week.

So sir when do you want to start to work? I have a hurt back, does that count as an injury? So not sure I can work, sorry, would you sign this so I can show I tried to get a job? Thank you.

I have some software classes I need to take. I guess I might as well get started.

Angular.js
Node.js
React

And if I want to code for mobile devices, Swift

Good on you.

Even if I had an extensive knowledge base in code, the thought of learning multiple new languages would be damned intimidating to me.

Knowledge is power.

There’s nothing that I want. I’d love to get that last $6k paid off from the signature loan I got to pay off the Murano, but I’m too paranoid right now.
Stack the cash. They can get nothing from you on the signature loan. You have a good reason to be paranoid.

Dennis, as some have alluded to income taxes. I dont know the rules regarding the taxation of UE as they have changed since I last had to sign up but taxes may be an issue come next April 15th. You might want to speak to your CPA if you have one or check the workforce commission website to find out if that is taxable income.

note to all you seniors out there on the SS:
Start exercising, lose some weight, buy some spiffy threads
and go back to work
because they are not going to adjust your SS for this kind of inflation
Hahaha! I don't think so. If need be, they'd take me back to the job I retired from in a heartbeat, can the worthless AND annoying millennials that they had to hire, double my salary and kiss my errrr...feet.

Technically, I'm still an employee on an emergency basis anyway...simple and no paperwork to go back to full time. Keycard still works and I still have a log-in to the "system". But since I love living like a Welfare Queen (retirement), in a bullshit-free zone and making the same as I did working (complete with nice COLA's) ....going back to regular employment would be a simple NO.

The first $10,200 is not taxable in 2020, but next year it will be taxable in full unless they change the law again.

Not arguing, but we are in 2021 now, so is taxable now or am I understanding they will change the rules next year for this year's tax burden if any?

Plenty of jobs in MI of all kinds. Nobody wants to work. Places are closing down due to no workers
All of us are thinking once the UE runs out in September, all those people will go back to work.

I am beginning to think that won't be the case. How many of those businesses can survive another 4-5 months with limited income if any at all?

I am betting there will a whole lot fewer businesses this time next year. UE will be back at record highs.

I'm retired and have quite a large amount in an investment account. When my very liberal sister said well, you're going to cash the stimulus, right. I told her yes I am but the payback is going to come from her kids and grand kids. When I worked, I paid about 28 percent in taxes. I told me sister, in time her kids may be paying 30 to 35 percent and her grand kids may pay 35 to 40 percent in taxes.

I didn’t say it wasn’t good for me on a personal basis. But DAMN! Somebody has to pay for that, KWIM? I feel very guilty getting that much. It seems obscene to me.
No
Look at it as getting back some of your past payments
Yes we are all paying for it
And
Yes we have all paid for it
Don’t fret on it

Is there still a way to donate money to reduce the National Debt? I do believe it can be deducted off your taxes.

Word of the Day.

Pay attention folks-this is going to **** up the rest of what they have not managed to **** up already.

All that money looks great ATM but, in a few months a Wheelbarrow of it won't buy you a slice of Bread unless the Baker needs fuel for the fire.
It will be a good time to know how to bake bread.
Served with a slice of pickled butt monkey.

The big question is when will the bottom fall out.

I'ma thinkin' that Dennis nailed it.

This is going to be a major turning point in the complexion of our society.

Print it out and tape it on the fridge.

THIS! Once “free money” flows, turning it off will enrage the FSA. Then it’s show time… :(

If they are going to throw money around while the government races to crash the dollar you might as well enjoy it. It's going to be given out anyway.

Golang!

Two issues with node.

1. Callback Hell
2. The modules folder is heavier than a black hole.

And...

3. It's not compiled.

DEPLORABLE ME
Hell, DH and I together do not get that much in a month from ss. By the grace of God we each have a couple of other small income streams that help drastically.

Dennis, take the money and run, so to speak. Buy yourself a good solar generator to run your c-pap.

God is good all the time
Yeah, our SS is less than that, no other income, but everything is paid for... couple hundred a year for property tax, off grid...and that makes a difference.

In NC they dropped the requirement to look for work if the reason you filed for UI was do to COVID in any form.

Make hay while the sun shines. We all know the end of this now. Expand your food preps and everything else you need to be on your own for a considerable period of time as it’s never going to be cheaper than right now. If anything is left over put it into hard assets.

Finally not a lurker!
EVERYONE on my team is away or quarantined. "The boy stood on the burning deck, whence all but he had fled..." All I can say is the taxpayers got their money's worth outta me yesterday, today, and certainly will tomorrow. IT is a harsh mistress.
