Wanted to get out ahead of the weather (N MN), so popped up to the four corners local/regional chain grocery this morning. They had Smithfield bone-in hams for .97/lb w/$25.00 purchase. Knew it wouldn't be a problem getting to that total, just by picking up sale stuff.

The store looked beautiful as always...didn't really notice anything missing. I passed by the eggs, bread and milk...didn't need any, have plenty of eggs, and making bread at home again now. Baking supplies looked fine, though I didn't price anything there either. Oscar Meyer salami and bologna lunch meat was on special, 1 lb. packages @ $3.00 each, so grabbed a few of them. With homemade bread in the house and (hopefully) warmer weather, it's going to be sandwich season again. Thought about picking up some extra cooking oil if it's getting expensive, but use it so seldom (unless I start making homemade salad dressing again) that keeping a good supply of butter in the fridge/freezer covers it.

So, a few fresh vegetables, then was sorely tempted and forked over $9.99 for a really nice Easter lily plant, and well...there was my $25.00 to qualify for the ham. Done.

I was looking on HSN yesterday at oragami shelving. It has easily gone up 25 to 50 percent. I could use a couple of them but not at that price.

We just got back from the Stop N Shop. Commissary had no briskets. Found them! They are huge and the smallest one we could find was 8 pounds. It was $99!!!! But- thank God it was "on sale" for $54!

Smoking and cooking brisket has become very popular. Just type brisket in the YT seach bar.

Had to return the 13 year-old semi-luxury sedan I was loaned for this past winter today. Hit the grocery store after topping off the car. Grabbed some things I knew I'd need. Also had digital rewards coupons, so a little stocking up. Even though I got like $7 off, the total was still $60 for not much. Realized the jar of kalamata olives with the $2 off coupon was still $3 and change. Even with the coupons the stuff is way more than 2 years ago. Still trying to get my head around the $8.74 premade grocery store Italian sub.

Last time I was in walmart I was really hungry so I bought a couple of Nathans hot dogs on a bun. Even with nothing on the bun the hot dogs were delicious. Particulary compared to the Bar-s cheap ones.

My favorite coffee has gone way up in price. Community Coffee and Chicory. I use to buy 23 oz packages for under $10, in vacuum sealed packages. Now the 16 oz packages are right at $10. and on the community coffee website the 23 oz packages are almost $16 and they are not in vacuum sealed packages. I mix one package of the community with a largest canister of folgers, this gives a better taste to the folgers. I had never had any folgers coffee until I moved to the woods. There is only one place in Natchitoches that has a decent cup of coffee, Laziones, Barry will know what I'm talking about.

One thing I won't skimp on is hot dogs. Must be all beef- Nathan's or Hebrew sometimes Ball Park if they're on sale.

Smith's NE NV today. Most everything looked pretty well stocked. But prices are getting a little steep. Except for milk, heavy cream, and some fresh produce, if it wasn't on sale or deeply discounted, I didn't buy it. I had talked with DH about the avian flu situation and perhaps we should get a turkey for Thanksgiving now. He agreed. Last week Smith's had at least 1/2 dozen turkeys for $1.59/lb. TOday there weren't any. Maybe I should have thought ahead further.

Stop & Shop, western MA, bone in hams, .79/lb shanks, .89/lb butts, .99/lb spiral cut butts, very good prices.
I've never spent $11 for a kielbasa (just under 2 pounds @ 5.49/lb). This year, I bite the bullet at $15.50 (just over 2 pounds @7.49 /lb).

My mom used to stretch hotdogs by slicing them into scalloped potatoes, mac and cheese (from scratch no box stuff then) and my favorite in sauerkraut.
It's only Nathan's Famous for my homemade mac & cheese.

VERY IMPORTANT for those who slice hot dogs.

They are basically the perfect diameter for getting lodged in the throat. By further cutting them into 2 half-medallions, the potential choking hazard is greatly reduced. I find it easiest to first slice the hot dogs lengthwise, then the crosscuts.

And the knife, of course, is a potential hazard, too.

I wouldn't worry about it. The vast majority of the herd has no idea about any avian flu hitting poultry populations.

And their planning ahead for Thanksgiving? Their furthest outward plans only involve the weekend, and that starts on Thursday morning at the earliest.

You have time to get a turkey. Buying on the next shipment might make sense, with the current inflation.

Ist major thing I noticed at Walmart yesterday. There was NO whole milk or 2% Milk in the Great Value line. All they had was 1% and Skim.
I grew up on Beany Weines!
Surprisingly, there have been no shortages of the little cans of them in WalMart.

Like with my mac & cheese, it's only Nathan's Famous that sometimes goes into my homemade Boston baked beans.

So finally hit here. I normally shop Sam's. Freds Food Outlet, Food Lion and the mainstay Piggly Wiggly. Freds today eggs were up 4.00 per 30 count, WhiteHouse Brown vinegar up 3.00 a jug. Sam's on eggs has also had a huge increase. Both Sam's and Fred's were stocked.

Neither here nor there.

Once again but just a little bit louder. To date something like 29 MILLION egg laying birds have been euthanized since the beginning of the year due to the avian flu. Prices are not going to come down anytime soon, if ever.

Our Kroger had not a single package of their store brand chicken breasts yesterday! They had some wings and things but the rest of the case was empty.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before except mayyybe at the lockdown panic.

Even the Tyson side of the case looked thin.
Thin and expensive
Central Indiana area.
I’m hoping it’s only due to Easter buying and not the bird flu issue hitting us. :(

Bacon, yogurt case…those were poorly stocked as well.

Tyson has been really sporadic lately in our stores.

I just saw that Del Monte is closing more plants in the US. DH loves their canned fruit, so I'm stocking up.

Day by day
HEB was a little light on fresh chicken today. I grabbed two pks of chicken tenders, pricier than other options, without a doubt. They're almost a convenience food for us. I bake them, freeze them on a cookie sheet, then vacuum seal two or three/or in individual portions. We use them for a quick chicken sandwich, in stir fry, added to a pasta side with a can of vegetables, etc. I loved cold cooked chicken, I usually have one with half an avocado for lunch.

They only had about 10 pks, I think. I saw a few whole chickens, not many, some pks of thighs and breast meat. Not nearly as much as there usually is there.

I thought the egg section looked a little lighter than usual. Could be people are picking up another dozen or so because of all the news about eggs being in short supply.

Aldi's had been hit pretty hard in all areas. Canned fruit again seemed to be a target of many shoppers, I saw only two flats of canned peaches and one of canned pears. We love their fruit, but I got some my last trip so we're good for a while.
