Discussing the chuck roast the other day and I ran across this today View attachment 381786
I was a young mother of three, married 8 years, when this ad came out. Do you see why the old folks have trouble adjusting to a world that has changed so radically while they merely went about their work and business of living. The raises in pay never came as fast or as much as the raises in prices. We have been losing that COL/Wage race consistantly since the 50"s.

Fryer legs at .39/lb. I just picked some up at .34/lb.

I've seen some very old ads, like 1890s. Chicken then was about .19/lb (in New York City, I think). So, over a very long time period, chicken hasn't had much inflation.............yet.

I haven't seen a very big raise in price of chicken or pork in my area of Mississippi. Beef is another story, though. Traditionally, chicken and pork have always been much cheaper here in the South.

If you all have the extra room, get an extra ham or two while the sales are going on!

I think grocery stores are starting to mark down from lack of sales right now, plus Christmas sales.

While prices aren’t good, I did see a lot of big items like hams and racks of ribs on sale Saturday.
Turkeys too.

Indiana Kroger and Meijer stores.

Our Indiana Kroger carries a ground beef/pork blend in prepackaged 2lb amount.
It’s always 6.99$, which for two lbs I think is a pretty good price.

I always grab a pack when they have those set out.
I mention this because the blend makes a really good spaghetti sauce, chili, ect.
Last night I tried using it for a meatloaf.

It turned out great!
There was no grease floating in the pan like a “full beef” meatloaf sometimes has and while it did lack that full beef flavor I’d highly recommend using it just for the price point.

Just something to look for at your own stores.
I’m not sure how it would taste as a plain hamburger but probably not too bad.

Same in middle-Tennessee. I've been using it for spaghetti, Salisbury steak, tacos, chili, etc. It's good. I must limit my red meat because of gout and usually use ground pork, but using this lets me cheat a little and get the texture and browning of ground beef. Ground pork just doesn't caramelize like beef.

It's pretty good for hamburgers. But I'm used to eating ground pork burgers, so YMMV.

Im happy someone else knows what I’m talking about lol!

I really miss that full beef flavor in the meatloaf I made; but for everything else I’ve not noticed it so much.
Either way, I’m going to keep picking up a pack whenever I see it. Our Kroger doesn’t have it all of the time.
That, or others have taken notice too and are grabbing it all up!

We try very hard to steer clear from the fats and up until recently I’ve rarely use ground beef.
It’s simply a matter of necessity.
Im grateful to have found an alternative.

The craziest produce price I saw was at our local Harps. Last week 1 pound of strawberries was $6.99. This week they were $7.99. Everything has been inching up. Lettuce was $2.49 a head. But they were small and light weight. I bought bagged lettuce for the same price and it had more lettuce. Some things were low in stock, but they pretty much had everything.

We don’t have Kroger in south Texas but this reminds me that you can get Hill Country Fare (HEB brand) sausage roll and substitute it for a lot of hamburger dishes. It’s not heavily seasoned so doesn’t really taste like traditional breakfast sausage. It’s about half the price of ground beef.

There's a meat market that we buy the 50/50 burger from. It's usually $2.69 but it's quite a trip for us so it's a throw a cooler in the trunk when we're going to be in that direction kind of thing.

I've ground a lot of pork loins to save money and you're right it doesn't carmalize as well but pork patties are very good off the grill and also fried in a cast iron skillet, although I cheat and fry them in bacon grease.

I have to cook commercial pork a lot longer than beef to get nice browning in the pan.

Lotsa added water has to be cooked out before it will brown.

Did a pot of green chili last week, took forever to get a fond in the pan.

Wild pig, not so much.

Yeah, I've noticed the same. It's touchy to get it browned "right" without turning it into pebbles. And the texture is still some different than beef and it seems to be a lighter flavor. Grilling makes it easier to caramelize, for me anyway. But I've grown used to ground pork because I don't care for ground chicken and ground turkey smells like a sweaty locker room while cooking (my wife's words). :lkick:

I went to a regional chain grocery store this afternoon (Food Giant)

They advertised $1.49 a pound assorted pork chops and 14 ounce Canpbell brand smoked sausage at 2 for 5 dollars. And they had neither.

No lettuce either.

But the produce that they did have looked good. It was expensive though.

I wanted some corn on the cob for my rooster who injured his leg somehow last night. I had to segregate him in a dog cage to give him time to heal, and he is miserable. So I figured some corn on the cob would help him feel a little better.

Anyway, 4 ears of fresh corn were $5.99!

I got them anyway, for Bubba’s sake. But my wallet cried in pain at the checkout counter.

Also, I bought a gallon of store brand milk: $4.12.

That wasn’t too bad. Tennessee milk has always run higher than alot of other states.

A double loaf pan, the inside one having drainage holes, cures any grease problems.

I love shopping at Food Giant. Their produce is always lots better than Walmart or Aldi's. I don't get there often enough. It's a bit out of our way.

Ordered from Wild Fork yesterday online, and it was delivered today. Contents were frozen rock hard and went straight into my chest freezer.

Prices are unchanged. Stable no increases.

They carry many types of ground beef and I have been trialing them. So far really like the ground beef made from chuck (nice beefy favor), tenderloin (almost had a sweet taste), and round (very fine grain little if any gristle).

Posting some good news for a change, in case someone can take advantage of it...
Kroger in middle-TN always has beef standing rib roasts on sale this time of year. Until 12/27, they have a super sale.
Normal price is $13.99/lb. With Kroger card, it's $7.97/lb. Add the digital coupon, it's $5.97/lb. You can't get any kind of decent steak for that price, and this is good stuff.
I had them cut us 4 big steaks off tonight, right at 10 lbs. Regular price came to $138. Final price was $58. I can't have beef for a couple of weeks due to gout, but I was not about to pass this up. They are going into FoodSaver bags and into the freezer. New Years Eve, perhaps... :D
ETA: I just put them in FS bags. Those things are 2.5-3 inches thick each! I had to use the big bags, and one in each bag.

Not really a shortage, but last week at WM, nothing in the bakery had a price on it. They had a really nice tray of cookies that I wanted but I left it. Quite a bit of the produce had no prices either, even the bananas. And nothing that I bought rang up for the price listed on the shelf. It sort of evened out, I actually had a few things ring up lower than the listed price.
