Probably not Wegs. They have contracts all over the country and world. I have rarely seen produce absences or shortages there. One time a couple of years ago, there was the Romaine scare (e-coli?, I don't remember now), but that only lasted maybe a month until things got straightened out. And I believe that one was country-wide.
I was buying romaine hearts for the chickens.

last month it was $9.99 for a pk of 3 romaine hearts.

nope nope nope.

now there are NO romaine hearts or heads at all for 2 weeks.

produce really sux rite now.

not only, is it scarce, but its horrible when it is available.

I know.. winter is coming

Your profile says you are way up north in the frozen tundra of N. Ontario. Your chain stores probably do not have the same suppliers/contracts as we do further south. Or maybe you're having trucking/transportation issues, I don't know. Looks like you're stuck with canned/frozen veggies for a while, unless you have your own greenhouse.

It has a fair amount of vitamin k, but little else.

It's likely that any other green in a super market is superior. But, Americans want their iceberg lettuce to go with their white bread, their bologna, their slice of sickly looking tomato, and their...(well, I ain't saying).

The only way we eat iceberg lettuce is shredded for tacos. What's left in the bag (Yeah, I buy it already shredded in a bag) is mixed with other garden greens and nutritious foods for a nice mixed green/garden/chef/taco salad.

That's surprising that it has vitamin K, its just about the only green that my always in afib and takes a blood thinner can eat, per his coumadin doctor at the VA. They are supposed to avoid vitamin K

Iceberg is worthy when in a salad like this:

"1905" Salad®

In the 1970s, this flavorful salad was the Columbia's answer to the ubiquitous salad bar. Created by waiter Tony Noriega in the 1940s, it was adapted by Columbia, eventually phasing out the use of black olives and celery. The Columbia created a new dressing that featured Spanish olive oil, minced garlic, dried oregano and white wine vinegar, enhanced by Worcestershire sauce, lemon and Parmesan cheese. The salad earned the Columbia a place on USA Today’s list of “10 Great Places to Make a Meal of a Salad."

Makes 2 full salads or 4 side salads

  • 4 cups iceberg lettuce, broken into 1½" x 1½" pieces
  • 1 ripe tomato, cut into eighths
  • ½ cup baked ham, julienned 2" x ⅛" (may substitute turkey or shrimp)
  • ½ cup Swiss cheese, julienne 2" x ⅛"
  • ½ cup green Spanish olives
  • 2 cups "1905" Dressing (recipe below)
  • ¼ cup Romano cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 lemon
Combine lettuce, tomato, ham, Swiss cheese and olives in a large salad bowl. Before serving, add "1905" Dressing, Romano cheese, Worcestershire and the juice of 1 lemon. Toss well and serve immediately. Makes 2 full salads or 4 side salads.
"1905" Dressing Recipe
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin Spanish olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • ⅛ cup white wine vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Mix olive oil, garlic and oregano in a bowl. Stir in vinegar and season with salt and pepper. For best results, prepare 1 to 2 days in advance and refrigerate.

Kroger. Central Indiana

They’ve been out of their brand of cornflakes for almost a month now.

Bottled drinking water in every size of bottle count packs have been thin.

They “do have” some pre holiday meat sales starting but those are still too high.

I broke down and bought one chuck roast for our dinner tonight, but it was still 16$ and probably won’t be big enough for leftovers:(

I saw piles and piles of lovely meat in there yesterday but also saw a slow moving group of shoppers just “looking”….maybe they bought stuff, I don’t know.

There really weren’t any good prices on all of the left over turkeys either. Or hams.
Hams in all varieties but even the cheapies aren’t cheap anymore.

Same with all seafoods. All of it, was too high.
Tyson does have a bogo on chicken thighs so I did get two of those. Smaller size packages, not the family packs.

The atmosphere in general to my perception was quiet and gloomy.
This store has been running on a shoestring of employees at the checkouts. Maybe two baggers, tops, running back and forth.

It’s pathetic in there.
I’m going to probably switch to Meijer. They must treat their workers a whole lot better because they’re always fully staffed and to be honest their selection is better overall. They’re still high priced in the meat department just like Kroger is.
Meijer is further away and takes me longer to shop in there but I’ve about had it with Kroger.

I was looking at a product that I haven't used for awhile, Kitchen Bouquet, walmart has been out of it for weeks. I finally remembered to look for it at Super One, which is a higher priced store. They had four bottles and I bought all four. They were at least a dollar more than walmart, but no matter the price at walmart, they had none and now I have four.

As for other shortages I'm not seeing any because I rarely go to the store.

psychgirl: I concur with Kroger butter........haven't bought it for a long time......it's waxy and vaguely resembles butter, but not wholly.......not tasty.....and on toast you don't have that "YUM" factor.......I use Challenge butter and any markdown higher grade..........

Went to Kroger today (middle TN) to pick up a few items. We've both been feeling poorly this weekend. My wife sometimes likes diet Sprites when her stomach is upset, so I got her a six-pack of plastic bottles: $5.49! I bit the bullet, but she said that I should've gotten the syrup for the sodastream. I told her I didn't want her having to make it when she didn't feel good, so worth the price.

6 super mega rolls of Charmin (equal to 36 regular rolls, lol) was $11.99. By that measure, those "regular rolls" would contain only about 60 squares per roll. The super-mega rolls have a diameter of 5 inches, so a "regular roll" would be less than 2 inches. I have never once seen these "regular rolls" they reference. But they get away with chicanery because it isn't worth a class action, even though it's deceptive advertising.

Jumping in to say that I just checked the Aldi ad, and they have their spiral sliced half-hams next week for $1.49/lb. Probably about as good as it's going to get.

This thread's traffic sure has slowed down. Maybe shortages aren't as noticeable, and/or more likely, we are getting worn down and grudgingly adapting to the limitations and price madness we see in the stores.

Kroger also has hams on sale!

I forget what the spiral hams are but the one I did buy was only .89 /lb
I found a perfect sized one for just us two that was 6.97$
Honestly, Kroger has some really good sales right now.

I spent 73$ last night but saved 22$

If you stock up on broths, the Kitchen Basics brand are all 2.75$/2 lb carton size.

I bought three beef stock cartons but plan on getting a few more. They’re 3.79/ carton
Indiana Kroger.

Yup...my local/regional grocery chain has Smithfield standard bone-in for .97/lb with a $25 purchase. I prefer the spirals for fancier event dinners like Christmas because they take the glaze flavors better and I don't have to slice 'em pretty, but think I'll put one or two of the .97-centers in the freezer for 2023 "regular" use.

That's what I do. Buy hams at Christmas while on sale to use throughout the coming year.

I looked through 3 or 4 pages for this thread the other day, when I was commenting about not being able to find the small individual boxes of raisins at walmart. I have not idea what they would have cost in the past. The only ones I could find were coated with yogurt, but not way I'd want to ones with yogurt because its just chemicals.

For me, the slowdown on my own posting is that there basically aren't any shortages. Local stores are overflowing with product, likely due to store managers over-ordering, believing that there could be shortages.

Prices are rising for products that sell at the same rate of restocking. Heavy discounts in pricing are for some products that move slower than the restocking, as the stores would otherwise run out of space for it all.

Aldi is supposed to be opening in my town in about two weeks, which may further change peoples' shopping habits, possibly creating even more overstocked items in stores.

If I had more room in the big basement freezer I’d buy another one.

A couple of our chains have been putting pork shoulder roasts on sale lately. Latest is Hormel branded ones at Jewel, for $0.88/#, but limit 20# (roasts vary from 7-10#) with saver card coupon, or $1.49/# beyond that. We bought several the last time they were on sale (no limit then) at $0.99/pound to make sausage. Getting a couple this time to make pulled pork BBQ for work food days. These made fantastic ground sausage, and have worked well also for pulled pork stuff.

Their current add also has a lot of other meats on sale for what I think is a pretty good price.

Lettuce here on the Big Island is now $3 a lb in our grocery stores !
It is locally grown. I guess the fertilizer price has pushed up the food price. Fresh broccoli also grown here is now $5 lb. I have two vertical grower things that I am growing lettuce and spinach in on the deck.
Going to start up some Kratky systems soon grow tomatoes and peppers.

Wal-Mart has been dearth on Keystone canned meats. Our local location no longer carries, or even has a shelf tag for, anything but chicken. Previously within the past few weeks they had added back the shelf tag for the ground beef again, but it never appeared.

Sam's Sioux City no longer has the 4-can stacks of Butterfield canned roast beef. Past months it has been stacked. Likewise effs are 100% gone there. They were packed 7 dozen per case. Just empty pallets.

Aldi's - also in Sioux City - had eggs enough at $4.53/dozen.

Our Walmart has never carried any of the Keystone canned meats. Our local Sam's has also stopped selling those cans of Butterfield roast beef. Tupelo, MS. area.

I started buying Costco’s spiral cut hams several years ago when my friend in Tennessee bought one and we All decided they were way more tasty than the really expensive Honey Baked Hams.

The Costco spiral hams were better spiral cut too.

So much better serving it. V
