Went to the Huntsville TX HEB today, got in and out before 10am. They had been stocking heavily and were still at it when I was there.

Dairy was well stocked, people were in there shopping it down some. Lots of empty boxes from what they had previously stocked. Yogurt seemed a favorite today.

Stopped at the facial tissue shelves, still a 1 box per person limit. There were a lot of brands I didn't recognize, but at least there was some available. Guessing it won't last long, ditto on the other paper products.

Canned goods, oh my. Vegetables and fruit still in short supply, some front loading in the vegetables, not a lot there. Canned fruit still very short, lots of holes. There was one case of 12 Libby's sliced peaches in fruit juice that had been cut open, and it was the only one there. That was it. Even the house brands were empty but for a can or two. Canned meats also getting hit hard, some availability but not a lot.

Pasta and rice goods - also being shopped heavily, especially the mac and cheese in cups and boxes. Plenty of bottled water.

Didn't have time to check other sections. They are working hard at restocking, but it doesn't seem like there is a lot to stock with.

Last trip to grocery store and special trip yesterday. It's Summer hot here, wanted some cold treats, popsicles. Very short supply here.
Bought box of Outshine fruit ones a few days ago, literally the last of a half dozen boxes of any flavor or style.
Went yesterday hoping to have a better selection. Nope.
Bought Italian ices, only a few of those left too. Also bought a pack of grape Outshine popsicles, three boxes left. Basically no standard popsicles or freeze pops, only the more gourmet style and a few options at that. Plenty of ice cream and candy style frozen novelties though.

Cool avatar, Greysage! I hadn’t seen that one before.

Well, my mother was born and raised in The Pit and is half Polish. I was born there too. I love Polish recipes, and she was good at it. Ukie recipes are awesome too. I remember my Ukie neighbor's mom making those little dough pies, either filled with mashed potatoes and fried in butter & onions; or the same recipe filled with cherries and dusted with confectioners sugar. I forget what they're called -- golumpki's maybe?

The ones made of pasta filled with potatoes (and cheese!) and boiled or fried in butter and onions are pierogies. At least that’s what they were called in OH.

Here’s what Wiki says -

Pierogi[1] (/pɪˈroʊɡi/ pih-ROH-ghee)[a], also known as varenyky[2], are filled dumplings, made by wrapping unleavened dough around a savoury or sweet filling and cooking in boiling water, or pan-frying. Pierogi which consist of noodle dough and have to be cooked in boiling water are associated with the Central and Eastern European kitchens where they are considered national dishes[3][4][5][6]. Pierogi-like dumplings are popular in most Central and Eastern European countries as well as in Ashkenazi Jewish, Ukrainian Mennonitesand modern-day American cuisines, where they are known under their local names.

Typical fillings include potato, sauerkraut, ground meat, cheese, cottage cheese (farmers cheese), mushroom, and fruits. The dumplings may be served with a topping, such as melted butter, sour cream, fried onion, pork rind or cream sauce, called schmaunt fat[7].

Now I’m hungry!

ETA: Sorry, just finished reading the thread and I see this has been addressed.

My son made the cherry ones just yesterday.

Tried to buy leanest ground beef from 2 different meat counters this morning to make hamburger patties out of and the only lean ground beef I could find was Angus grass fed in the 1lb packages. Dont really care but the local markets are out of everything except the 27 % fat ground beef.

Oh, this is golumpki's - my mom's were so good:

Golumpki
(Gołąbki, Stuffed Cabbage)
Traditionally, a Golumpki recipe is a meat mixture such as ground beef, mixed with rice, onions, and spices that is then rolled in a cooked cabbage leaf. ... This Golumpki is simply a meat mixture that is rolled in cabbage, covered in a tomato sauce, and then baked to savory perfection.Apr 25, 2018

In my family, this was called stuffed cabbage. There is also a variation of it (maybe from Greece?) - stuffed grape leaves.

Went to Walmart yesterday and was really surprised at the empty shelves again. It was like the beginning of shutdown on the canned veggie, pasta, mac and cheese, soup and frozen depts. The only coke or dr. pepper was in bottles and few of them. Meat looked better. Produce ok, except the sweet corn was brown and dead.

They did have a huge pallet of 7 cu.' freezers and some refrigerators.

I can only find the Outshine bars in strawberry and was wondering if they stopped making the other flavors. I love the coconut ones, but none to be had. Been to three stores looking.

At the height of the early shutdowns our Kroger didn’t have potatoes stocked, either. Totally empty one Sunday morning!

Indiana. Central Indiana north of Indy a ways.... the produce guy said they prefers the same amount but only 3 pallets instead of the 70 arrived. Every bag was gone in an hour. It was weird to see!

I was looking for a specific product for my mom and happened to be in WM at just the right time to grab a bottle of all purpose lysol lemon cleaner and a 3 pk of chlorox disinfecting wipes. They were disappearing as fast as the stockers could get them on the shelves.

Limit 1 of each.

That's awesome. When I went to Walgreens last week for Diet Coke they had none but I scored 2 tubs of wipes. Last night on Kroger's website I bought a 3 pack and had them shipped to DD in MA. Went on to order for myself and sold out. You have to be fast!

I read that it was a nationwide shortage.

I planted both Red Norlands and Yukon Gold (potatoes) in the community garden. I replaced half of the soil in the bed with sand (with the site manager's permission). I have a crop! This is the first successful potato crop I've had in Iowa since I moved here. I've had fine harvests from my salad gardens (in containers), all of the herbs, and some so-so harvests of green beans and squash. It's been bad for potatoes . . . too wet or too dry. I've been babying that bed. I so want potatoes this winter!

Added: I rent the bed in the community garden, plus contribute several hours of work, mostly hauling mulch down from the city yard waste area, where they make compost, in the spring and fall. This became necessary because I have yet to grow potatoes in my yard! Too much shade.

I give up.
We have had a major flea problem at our house. Went to 5 stores to get hertz flea shampoo and finally found some for 9.90 a bottle.

You're going to also have to vacate the premises with all your pets and flea bomb the place too. Otherwise just the flea baths won't do any good. Actually, you probably should use what Dennis uses (for dogs). Or the fleas will remain too, and be brought in whenever the pets go outside. If cats, your vet can recommend similar for them. And they can come in on your pants and socks too. It's been a long time for me, so I don't remember what to do for that.

Potatoes love sand! Especially good creek sand with freshwater clam shells in it. I so wish we could grow them here.

Mid-Atlantic WM this AM. Got all my groceries, got to self-check out. CARDS ONLY. I was not happy, and let the girl watching the registers know it. Had to stand in line for a cashier and I always seem to get the ones who have to make a very LOUD running commentary on every single item I bought. if she'd shut up and just done her job she would have been done in half the time. Woman behind me was tapping her foot and carrying on because she had to wait.
They had plenty of TP, paper towels, and paper plates. they even had an extra pallet of Scott TP sitting in the middle of the aisle, and took the limit signs down, so I got 2. Sandwich, storage, and trash bags really sparse.
They didn't have any of the red wine that dh likes, or his brand of ginger ale.
They only had Lite Spam. I can't imagine that anybody actually eats that.
They only had name brand 90 weight gear oil (which dh sent me after) and it was $12 a small bottle, which is 3 times what we normally pay for generic brand. I didn't get it. If I have to pay $12 a bottle for it, I'll give my money to NAPA.
I sent Walmart a rather blistering e-mail about the CARDS ONLY situation when I got home, but I doubt it will do any good

Treat all furry pets for fleas for a minimum of 3 months continuously. Bravecto, seresto, nexgard, or revolution plus are best. September through December are prime flea season here, so ideally treat until after Christmas.

I went to two Dollar stores in our small town this morning. Both had very sparse canned vegetables and only odd brands of canned fruit, and very little of those. Some paper products were still there, but prices were up. They were really busy even at an early hour.

I went to my small town Harp's grocery, and also Dollar General, this morning. Prices were high at the grocery, but they always have been and today's prices didn't seem much higher than when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

Dollar General prices were about the same, maybe just a little higher on the things I bought. There was still plenty of 12-pack Coke left but the Coca-Cola truck arrived right after I did and I noticed that he was only bringing in the big plastic bottles.....no cartons of cans at all. I was not parked in a position that I could look into the back of the truck to see if there were any cartons in there.

I did hear the guy and a couple of the sales clerks chatting about how he hadn't been to this store for about 5 months. So I wonder if drivers are being laid off and given different or combined routes?

The young man at Dollar General who helped me out with my cart remembered that I can't walk fast and that I have to lean on the cart, so without me even saying anything he pulled it instead of pushing it and went even slower than I needed to. And when I was ready to get into the truck to leave, he said "Now, remember, no speeding."!!!!!

I went to Aldie's in upstate NY today. Still limits on canned goods, but well stocked. Limit one box on Kleenex, which I surprised me. Eggs were 1.08.

From the Economic Collapse Blog:

July 14, 2020 by Michael Snyder

1594848001980.png

I had no idea that things had gotten so bad. Earlier today, my wife spoke with the manager of a local grocery store because she wanted to place a large order for some canned goods. What she was told surprised her, and it certainly surprised me. The manager of this local grocery store told her that there are numerous nationwide shortages going on at this moment, and he indicated that there are lots of products that he simply cannot get right now. When my wife told me what he had said, I decided that I had to look into this, because I hadn’t heard that canned goods were in short supply. Well, it turns out that the manager that my wife spoke with was right on target, and that should deeply alarm all of us.

One thing that my wife was specifically told was that there is a nationwide shortage of aluminum cans, and this is having a tremendous impact on the soda industry.

In fact, things have gotten so bad that Coca-Cola has been forced to publicly address the situation
Coke Life, Mello Yellow, Sprite Zero, Fresca and more. These are among some of the products you may have had trouble locating on store shelves in recent weeks.
And you’re not alone.
When asked about the situation, Coca-Cola told one Twitter follower: “We are seeing greater demand for products consumed at home & taking measures to adapt, working to mitigate the challenge during this unprecedented time. We appreciate your loyalty to our beverages; please know that we’re working hard to keep the products you love on the shelves.”
Apparently the big reason why there is a shortage is because people are consuming far more beverages at home than usual, and this has created a huge demand for canned drinks.

Right now, Coca-Cola and Pepsi are primarily focusing on using their limited supplies of aluminum cans to produce their core products, and this has made less popular flavors very difficult to find
Both Coca Cola and Pepsi have reportedly been forced to focus on their most popular flavors in order to keep them in stock, making the less popular flavors harder to find for the time being.
Unfortunately, we aren’t just facing a shortage of aluminum cans.

According to the Wall Street Journal, some of the biggest food manufacturers in America are admitting that there are nationwide shortages of “flour, canned soup, pasta and rice”…
Grocers are having trouble staying stocked with goods from flour to soups as climbing coronavirus case numbers and continued lockdowns pressure production and bolster customer demand.
Manufacturers including General Mills Inc., Campbell Soup Co. and Conagra Brands Inc. say they are pumping out food as fast as they can, but can’t replenish inventories. Popular items such as flour, canned soup, pasta and rice remain in short supply.
Of course those are precisely some of the key items that preppers tend to stock up on.

I think that millions of Americans can sense what is coming, and they are gathering supplies while they still can.

Meanwhile, the nationwide coin shortage continues to get even worse.

This week, I was stunned to learn that Kroger has announced that it will “no longer return coin change to customers”

If you pay with cash at one of Kroger’s cashier checkouts, you won’t be getting coin change for a while, and it’s indirectly due to the coronavirus.
Kroger spokesperson Erin Rofles confirmed Friday the grocer will no longer return coin change to customers. Instead, the remainders from cash transactions will be applied to customers’ loyalty cards and automatically used on their next purchase.
That is serious.

This coin shortage is being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is likely to last for as long as this pandemic persists.

If we have already gotten to the point where the federal government is unable to produce enough coins for all of our businesses, how long will it be before we start witnessing a shortage of dollar bills?

At this point, even Walmart is acknowledging the stress that the nationwide coin shortage is putting on their operations

Walmart has also been impacted been the shortage. In a statement to WMAZ, Walmart spokesperson Avani Dudhia, “Like most retailers, we’re experiencing the affects of the nation-wide coin shortage. We’re asking customers to pay with card or use correct change when possible if they need to pay with cash.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has also deeply affected the meat processing industry. Numerous meat processing facilities all over the nation have been shut down in recent weeks, and this has limited supplies and pushed up prices.

In fact, we saw some pretty dramatic price increases during the month of June
Once again, meat prices went up.

Overall, beef and veal prices rose 4.8%. Pork prices grew 3.3% and bacon got 8.1% more expensive. Hot dog prices grew 4.9%.
I have repeatedly warned my readers that meat prices were going to go up substantially, and so hopefully a lot of you out there stocked up before the price increases hit.

What we have been witnessing over the first half of 2020 should be a major league wake up call for all of us, because it has become clear that our system is far more vulnerable to shocks than most people ever imagined.

If COVID-19 can cause this much chaos, what is going to happen when a crisis that is far more severe comes along?

Even though I write about this stuff on a constant basis, I was stunned when my wife told me that we couldn’t get the canned goods that we wanted because a nationwide shortage was happening.

It has become very difficult to keep up with how fast things are changing, and I expect events to accelerate even more as we head toward the end of 2020 and beyond.

If you still need to get stocked up for all the chaos that is coming, I would do so quickly, because supplies are only going to get tighter the worse things get.

Finally not a lurker!
Hit the base Class VI (liquor store) and commissary today. Tuesday and Wednesday are retiree days in the Time of the Virus. Rum, bourbon and gin well picked over, esp bottom shelf stuff. Some beer sizes (e.g. Heineken can 12 packs) out of stock, which is usual of late. At the commissary dishwashing soap, esp Dawn, still very low in stock. No H2O2 or cleansing alcohol in stock. Sugar stocks seemed very low. Some decent cuts in the remainder meat section, better pricing too.

I've had good luck getting frozen veggies on sale and then I dehydrate them and bag them with the sealer. Also caught a couple of good deals on fresh veggies at local produce stand on sweet corn, green beans so froze the corn and dehydrated the beans.

Many supplies here are thin at Safeway. Fresh milk of all types was very sparse. No organic flour, hasn't been for weeks. No Near East rice mixes, not for months. No organic pickles or relish. Big Goya bean display, with good sales. :) Cleaner and dish soap aisle very empty. Only a few boxes of kleenex and my preferred store brand, and "sale" prices on these high. Limit 4 sale on Bumble Bee tuna at 79cents. I did find 10-packs of Chicken of the Sea tuna for 9.47, and bought two to restock as that is a staple. Tuna sales have generally been at $1.25, when there was a sale. One of the employees with whom I am friendly said as I went by "Isn't it sad to see the shelves like this?"

SEWING MACHINES! Wow. Step-mom on Kodiak commissioned me to check out a couple of new machines for her (she is a prolific and talented quilter). Today I went to the main sewing machine store in Anchorage, where I've gone for years for repairs, supplies, the occasional machine or class. YOW buddy. Owner waited on me, they ARE still in business but not getting machines they need. Store was bare on every wall, though there were things like notions and thread on tables. Machines were sparse but I got some info for step-mom. It was pretty staggering to see that place. I really need to think about getting pictures. This one was pretty jaw-dropping. Prices were about the same; local shop been there many, many years.

Sewing machine store, with but a handful of machines on the floor.

Northern Nevada Grocery Outlet store had open shelves in the cereal and granola bars area, but the rest of the store was pretty well stocked. Paper products to the rafters, much higher than they used to stack them. For some reason, milk was only $2.19/gallon, about 70-80 cents cheaper than normal. What I found disconcerting, however, was the fact that of the dozen or so options for canned fruits, only one was a product of the US. The rest were from China (most of them), Thailand, and the Philippines. This does not end well....

Hang a small light about 6 inches above a pie pan filled with water Add a few drops of water softener.
Flees think it is a person or animal and they will hit the bulb and fall in the water and drown.
If you don't add the softener they will walk across to the edge and get away.

Went to Sam's this morning. I'm guessing they had 2 pallets of paper towels and that went in the tine it took to go from one corner if the store to the other. Completey gone by the time I got there. No more 5lb trays if ground beef that I have seen in a while here. still can get ground beef but prepackaged in 1lb packs. Basically go shopping at several stores now to get different things. Can't do it all at one place anymore. Oh well will try again at the next store
