I also went to a free food giveaway today -- first time in my entire life I have done that. But my wife's medical bills are so huge, and with all the potential food shortage problems coming down the pike, I figured that maybe it was time for me to get some of that free food that they have been giving away around town the last couple of months. You didn't have to qualify, or fill out papers, or even make a reservation. All you had to do was take your car to a local church and get into a line of cars and then drive up to where they had the boxes of food, and they would put four boxes in the trunk for you. Didn't even have to get out the car, and all the guys giving out the food were well organized, wore masks, and did everything in a way that there was no personal contact.
But at any rate -- the reason I bring it up in this thread is that Meemur mentioned seeing a potato shortage in her neck of the woods.
But at this free food giveaway, they were laying on the potatoes big time. When I got home and opened my boxes, there was a 10 pound bag of Russet baking potatoes - big, plump, fresh potatoes - in each one of my boxes. That is a total of 30 pounds. Fortunately, my wife can eat boiled potatoes as long as I cook them with just a little bit of salt. And I love a good baked potato. So I do not expect any of them to go to waste.
That is the interesting thing about the shortages that are being reported in this thread --
The shortages (with the exception of TP a few months back, and hand sanitizer) seem to be localized. While Meemur is seeing a potato shortage, I had a local church give me 30 pounds of fresh, high quality potatoes this morning. Free of charge.
BTW, in case you were curious, there were four grocery gift boxes in total. Three were fresh produce, and the fourth one was dairy products.
Specifically, they gave my wife and I:
30 pounds of russet potatoes,
9 pounds of organic, red onions (beautiful, very high quality onions!)
3 pounds of fresh carrots
27 pounds of fresh green apples
6 fresh, nice sized zucchini
2 gallons of 2% milk
2 pint bottles of chocolate milk
2 pint bottles of strawberry milk
1 24 ounce container of cottage cheese
1 8 ounce block of cream cheese
1 12 ounce bowl of sour cream and
1 12 ounce bowl of French onion dip
I have often heard that food banks give a lot of processed trash type foods, and maybe the regular give away programs do that, but this one turned out to be an alliance between the biggest fresh produce supplier in Memphis coupled with the biggest supplier of dairy products.
So we were given plenty of fresh produce and milk products, instead of processed trash.
So I am very happy - if a bit embarrassed.
The best part was when I found out that my wife really does like the strawberry milk. There are so few things that she can hold down nowadays. But she slowly drank one of the bottles of strawberry milk, and she really seemed to enjoy it.
It never occurred to me to try buying her strawberry milk when I go to the regular food store to shop. But now I know. Next time I go to the regular food store for groceries, I will purchase strawberry milk for her.
Whatever it takes to make her life a bit better...
