Well, my mother was born and raised in The Pit and is half Polish. I was born there too. I love Polish recipes, and she was good at it. Ukie recipes are awesome too. I remember my Ukie neighbor's mom making those little dough pies, either filled with mashed potatoes and fried in butter & onions; or the same recipe filled with cherries and dusted with confectioners sugar. I forget what they're called -- golumpki's maybe?

For those of you in the PNW, this may be of help if you are looking for meat. They do not charge shipping to western Washington.
A week or so ago, I called "The Steak Company" on a Facebook ad. Considering what seems to be happening with the meat situation, they had good prices so we ordered a package. We got
Ranchers Premium Steak Pack:
8 - 6 oz Boston Cut Filets
4 - 12 oz Prime Ribeyes
4 - 12 oz Thick Cut NY Steaks
12 - 8 oz Pure Sirlion Steak Burgers
6 - 10 oz Choice NY Steaks
8 - 8 oz Choice Seasoned Fajita Carne Asada
Total Servings - 52
1594884318963.png

They are having a sale through July 31st. These cuts are the same ones that they sell to steak houses and restaurants,

(It is a referral sale. If you mention me, NWPhotog, I will get something from them.)

We have had a major flea problem at our house. Went to 5 stores to get hertz flea shampoo and finally found some for 9.90 a bottle.
For a flea infestation in the home I buy a box of Borax powder laundry additive. It gets swept into the rugs, into the corners, into the furniture, stuffed chairs, the couch etc. We are careful not to breathe it. We don't put it on the beds. A broom breaks up the bigger clumps so our pets can't eat them. It gets left there a day or so. Then gets vacuumed up. We vacuum the beds too. It may have to be repeated if the infestation is bad. Everything that can get washed, gets washed.

Also if you have a vacuum cleaner with a bag, take it outside to change it. They used to make flea repellent tablets to put in the vacuum bags, I don't know if they still do.

Over the decades we've had to deal with two infestations. The Borax worked for us both times.

Remember fleas need a host and it doesn't have to be a pet bringing them in from outside. I suspect one infestation was due to the kids bringing them home from a friends home.

Finally not a lurker!
What state is that? Well, that’s one nice thing about Michigan. No shortage of alcohol. No matter what city or town, urban or rural, you can always count on finding a party store or gas station that carries liquor on every corner.

Funny story, in my 20s when I first started traveling for work, I found myself in Pittsburgh for a three-day training. I made fast friends with a few girls that lived there, and when we were out one night I asked one gal who was driving if she could take me to the party store. She gave me an odd look and said, “Are you sure? They’ll probably be closed.” I waved my hand in dismissal, insisting it was still early enough they’d definitely be open.

20 minutes later (which seemed like an eternity to me, because party stores are literally on every corner in Metro Detroit... you need not drive more than a half-mile to find one) she finally pulled into a large, empty, parking lot in the front of Party City. You know, balloons and party hats and streamers.

I looked at the gal incredulously and said, “What??? No! Not Party City! A party store. You know, the store where you get stuff to party with. Beer, alcohol, pizza, chips, rolling papers, bait...”

(The “bait” thing threw them off, but hey... I grew up on Lake St. Clair. LOL)

Needless to say, we all had a good laugh at that. It was the first time I’d ever encountered or even realized that you can’t buy alcohol at your local Rite Aid, gas station, or “party store” in other states. Some you have to buy at state run liquor stores.

Went to Sam's Club today. Everyone was masked up. Store was well stocked. Got a 25lb bag of bread flour that I hadn't seen anywhere in ages. The thing I did notice is the upper steel is empty but plenty of stuff on the floor level.

I dropped by Walmart yesterday. Fairly well stocked on most things, though some areas were a bit thin. Stopped by Aldi's today and they had NO canned vegetables. They did have canned beans and canned fruit, but no veggies. They were also the lowest they have been this whole pandemic on flour and sugar. The freezer was pretty low, but everything else was pretty well stocked, including meat. This is in north central Florida.

Raggedyann had a 1yr post opp follow up for TSR and I was forced to make that big push into ASSville today - sooo I figured since I'm deep into in enemy territory I may as well recon the local SCAMS KLUB . . . here's the SITREP as of 9A 7.16.20:

ZERO in the way of terlit paper or paper towels ABSOLUTELY NUN
ZERO in the way of ground beef pre-made made into hamburgers - haven't seen that since the COVID first hit
ZERO chicken tender loins
ZERO whole chicken
negligeable amounts of produce that wasn't very far out from its expiration date - like 2-3 days out - and looked to be rather sad

I did get 25lbs of bread flour I didn't look for yeast but don't recall seeing it. peanut butter limit one 2 pack there was one case of Swanson chicken stock left; reasonable amounts of cheeses; I did get a package of 3 ham steaks for this winters beans

almost unbelievably they had HALLOWEEN KANDY out - and entire ROW of it. . .

we have to go back into ASSville this TUESDAY I will make another trip - looking to score those hamburger patties . . .

Good, if appalling, report. My senior fishing/hunting/trapping licence lets me get a bunch of fish and moose with no tag (but need a permit on some things). This would be the year to give trapping a try since my brother can help me set the trapline up...though I do have to pack for that move south. What a world, eh.

It's Thursday and the truck from the wholesalers' ran today. After the total wipeout last week, I was not optimistic but this week I got a case of canned pears, mushrooms, veg/beef soup and mushroom soup - 4 out of 5 things ordered. I vary the order every week as I feel my way around the supply chain. No peaches, no garden peas for weeks. The manager at the store is enjoying the experiment too, though he hates not getting what he orders either.

My best advice is to get what you can while you can, being picky as to brand etc. is for when you can afford it and that time is almost over.

Oh, and 3 of the 4 cases I got are now pop top cans - they all used to be canopener cans for the store brand (HyTop) stuff. NOT liking that new development.

DW was by wallyworld earlier and picked up some food service #10 cans of veggies - carrots, sliced taters, green beans and whole kernel corn. Less then 4 bux a can retail. Mom asked what we would do with all that when we opened a can - I said tell the neighbors we had killed the fatted carrots and come bring a clean jar to get some :D

She also found some big cans of Wolf all meat chili too.

I got everything on my list today at Smith's/ Kroger except wipes.

Brats, bacon, spaghetti and sauce, Diet Coke 2L, cheese, broth, canned veggies (although out of store brand so subbed Green Giant for the same price), eggs, multi surface cleaner, personal items, deodorant, water, butter, kleenex.

I also got a delivery of Tp, paper towels, paper plates, shampoo, qtips, and face wipes.

Each check I just continue to add more for as long as I can.

Shopping day for me. Went to five grocery stores and one Walmart in the area. Starting to see a shortage of potatoes, both fresh and frozen. TP and cleaning supplies were hit and miss. I scored both 70% alcohol and peroxide at Walmart. Plenty of yeast and different flours in most stores.

I wish I could write that today was my last trip to a retail store for awhile, but I ordered some wool socks from the Duluth Trading Company that haven't come in yet, as well as my kitty's treats (Petsmart), which also hasn't come in, yet. Still, I think I'm doing fairly well. I'm sure there's some widget I've forgotten that might bite me later, but I don't think I have any major holes in the stuff I use regularly.

Central Iowa.

None of the stores have the number three cans of pinto beans which sucks and royally for me as they are my favorite bean. Ground beef is $2.49 a pound if you buy a ten pound tube at Fareway. Not seeing canned pears in 5he stores or fresh green beans.

Suburban Memphis here:

Went to a largish chain grocery store today for a quick visit. Got about 12 pounds of pork sirloin steaks at 99 cents per pound. I also got off brand TP for $3.98 for a 12 pack (roll size is about half the size of a roll of Angel Soft Mega roll), and off brand paper towels for $4.49 (6 rolls, decent enough quality, rolls were a good size but not huge). I did feel that the off brand TP and paper towels were good value for the money I spent.

I didn't buy any, but I did see 5 pound rolls of 80/20 hamburger for $12.98.

Still NO Hormel hot tamales - or any other type of canned hot tamales, either, for that matter. I have checked everywhere. I guess Hormel isn't making them right now. Hope that changes soon. My wife (who is on chemotherapy) is easily nauseated by the smell of spicy foods, but I can go out to the garage and microwave the hot tamales and she doesn't smell it, and I get to eat something that is easy to fix and not bland. (I cook the family meals nowadays, and they have to be so bland, for her sake.... microwaving canned hot tamales in the garage is one way that I "rebel" without causing my wife any more misery than she is already having to endure.)

They did have Hormel chili (beans and no beans, hot and mild), and yes, I do microwave canned chili out in the garage too, but man can not live on chili alone. He needs hot tamales too!

Wally world in mountain home still has lots of empty shelf space. Little groc store 45 min away has full shelves of sugar and flour. 25 # bags. No empty space in canned veg aisle either.

Give Fareway in Huxley a call. If you don't want to go that far, don't forget the Wheatsfield Co-op, which is expensive but they have hard-to-find things sometimes.

I may find myself in ankeny this weekend, fleet farm has something on sale he’s interested in, there’s two HyVee, two fareways, and an aldis there. If I don’t find that size can then it’s time to start jarring them up... I use two #3 cans for baked beans. I prefer to have six cans ahead in my pantry so I don’t have to think about buying beans. That said I do replace them as we eat them.

If you want to take a road trip, the new Aldi in Grimes is open. It is in front of the Menards, across from Walmart, at the Grimes exit. There is also a small Fareway in Grimes. It is about 1.5 miles west of Menards, behind the McDonald's.

If that is too much of a hike, be sure to visit the Prairie Trail HyVee. Although expensive, they have been getting a lot more canned goods in lately. They had my pickles in stock today!

Glad you've got potatoes. My homegrown potatoes will be ready to harvest in another four - five weeks.

Prayers continue for you and your wife! So happy the strawberry milk worked out for her.

The retail "season" is messed up. I'm seeing a combination of fall, spring, and winter stuff. I suspect they just put out whatever they are receiving.

No complaints! I was able to get two heavy vests for winter.
Not surprising. I'm glad I stocked important school supplies in the preps... might be needed for home schooling this year.

I suspect some of this will start waking people up when their expected seasonal stuff doesn't show up in the stores. I bought a bunch of inexpensive crafts and toys for the grandkids back in February... I thought it might be overkill, but it's looking more and more sane all the time.

The best part was when I found out that my wife really does like the strawberry milk. There are so few things that she can hold down nowadays. But she slowly drank one of the bottles of strawberry milk, and she really seemed to enjoy it.

It never occurred to me to try buying her strawberry milk when I go to the regular food store to shop. But now I know. Next time I go to the regular food store for groceries, I will purchase strawberry milk for her.

Whatever it takes to make her life a bit better...
Have you tried Strawberry Quik? It comes in both liquid and powder form?

One of my kids can't drink cow milk and to make the Almond "milk" more palatable, we use chocolate or strawberry Quik.

We appreciate the prayers.

I am sure that your homegrown potatoes will end up being fresher, and higher quality than what we were given today -- well worth the extra waiting time, I am sure.

But we cannot grow potatoes in this part of the country. I have even tried growing them in barrels, and all I got was squawky excuses for potatoes. I finally gave up (too much effort for too little reward), and just buy commercially produced potatoes.

Which means I am very happy with what I was given this morning.

No, I never have bought strawberry milk before - in regular or powdered form. But thanks for the tip. Powdered strawberry milk flavoring sounds like it would be good to add to our food storage, while the fresh stuff would be good for right now. If/when we are forced to drink the powdered milk I have stored up, I could always add powdered strawberry flavoring to her powdered milk.

I also went to a free food giveaway today -- first time in my entire life I have done that. But my wife's medical bills are so huge, and with all the potential food shortage problems coming down the pike, I figured that maybe it was time for me to get some of that free food that they have been giving away around town the last couple of months. You didn't have to qualify, or fill out papers, or even make a reservation. All you had to do was take your car to a local church and get into a line of cars and then drive up to where they had the boxes of food, and they would put four boxes in the trunk for you. Didn't even have to get out the car, and all the guys giving out the food were well organized, wore masks, and did everything in a way that there was no personal contact.

But at any rate -- the reason I bring it up in this thread is that Meemur mentioned seeing a potato shortage in her neck of the woods.

But at this free food giveaway, they were laying on the potatoes big time. When I got home and opened my boxes, there was a 10 pound bag of Russet baking potatoes - big, plump, fresh potatoes - in each one of my boxes. That is a total of 30 pounds. Fortunately, my wife can eat boiled potatoes as long as I cook them with just a little bit of salt. And I love a good baked potato. So I do not expect any of them to go to waste.

That is the interesting thing about the shortages that are being reported in this thread --

The shortages (with the exception of TP a few months back, and hand sanitizer) seem to be localized. While Meemur is seeing a potato shortage, I had a local church give me 30 pounds of fresh, high quality potatoes this morning. Free of charge.

BTW, in case you were curious, there were four grocery gift boxes in total. Three were fresh produce, and the fourth one was dairy products.

Specifically, they gave my wife and I:

30 pounds of russet potatoes,
9 pounds of organic, red onions (beautiful, very high quality onions!)
3 pounds of fresh carrots
27 pounds of fresh green apples
6 fresh, nice sized zucchini

2 gallons of 2% milk
2 pint bottles of chocolate milk
2 pint bottles of strawberry milk
1 24 ounce container of cottage cheese
1 8 ounce block of cream cheese
1 12 ounce bowl of sour cream and
1 12 ounce bowl of French onion dip

I have often heard that food banks give a lot of processed trash type foods, and maybe the regular give away programs do that, but this one turned out to be an alliance between the biggest fresh produce supplier in Memphis coupled with the biggest supplier of dairy products.

So we were given plenty of fresh produce and milk products, instead of processed trash.

So I am very happy - if a bit embarrassed.

That sounds delish! Thanks for sharing.

My little man and I are heading to walmart super center later today. Seems like this will be our last mask-free trip as new rules go into effect soon.

Regarding the Halloween candy, it's not surprising to hear... three weeks ago we were at Rural King and they had the winter Carhartts out  Big Lots had Christmas decorations out in September (last year)

Also, be warned: pumpkin spice season has begun. Was searching for bread machine recipes last night and whatever site I was on had other recipes "you might like" ...all pumpkin spice/fall recipes.

Time marches on. In fact it seems to be speeding up at a mind-boggling pace.

In October, they'll have the Easter stuff on display.

Yep, we order from them, also, and Emergency Essentials.

If you haven't signed up for email notifications when an item is back in stock, you might want to do so and don't wait to order what you want. I waited to order about half a day after I got the notice that freeze-dried peaches were back in stock, and by the time I got to it they were sold out again. Haven't been back in stock yet.
