Visiting family in Mississippi this week.
My brother shared that he bought a 3 pound package of bacon for $21 that sold for $9 a couple of months ago. We've been shopping for canning supplies and picked up a few dozen jars at Kroger.
Tractor Supply told us they received a shipment of jars Wednesday morning and quickly sold out.

On my shopping trip the other day, I wanted a bottle of malt vinegar. Nope, not gonna happen. The vinegar section was decimated.

Took a little trip to Aldi (Piedmont of NC) with a side trip to Lidl. Lidl has just opened a store in the same smallish town where an Aldi has been for several years. The new Lidl was quite impressive, having freshly baked croissants, donuts, etc. The frozen section seemed quite large and was mounted to hang down from the ceiling so that things are more at eye level. Overall, my opinion is that Lidl is more expensive than Aldi. The products have much the same look even if the "brand name" is a little different. Lidl vegetables were quite a big higher in price than Aldi, although my shopping in that area was only glancing. One price I did notice was zucchini. $1.47 per pound! I nearly laughed out loud. Most years, I have a hard time finding people to take what I've grown! :-)

Now, back to Aldi...stock seemed good on most things and prices had not advanced to any degree of panic. Canned vegetables were still 37-49 cents per can with plenty available. Meat was up a bit but again, not to the panic stage. Hamburger (73%) was $2.79/#. Bacon was a little sparce but still only $3.79/16oz package. Butter was $2.06/# and milk was $2.50/gal. The only frozen item that I wanted but couldn't find was broccoli. Brussel sprouts (a fan favorite here) were 89 cents/package. Canned meat was thin...chicken breast $1.99/can; corned beef hash $1.89/can. There were no canned hams. TP and PT were available but not overstocked. Pantene shampoo and conditioner 12 oz containers were $3.97 ea.

That's a wrap! Mmmm...wraps sound good; maybe I'll fix some.

Well, I noticed something bizarre today. I always shop at Meijer because it’s all we have around here. It’s either that, or Walmart. And I have their MPerks rewards and coupons that I use every time I shop. I know it tracks me, but so what? As we all know, they track everything anyway.

About once every 2-3 weeks, in addition to the coupons I clip on the app, they’ll send me coupons in the mail. They are 100% always spot on with the exact same things I buy. Usually milk, Wrights bacon, avocados, bacon, coffee creamer, and a few other things I buy regularly. I almost always use them all because it’s what I get. Always the brands I buy, and all relevant.

This week, though, I got my mail coupons and they left me scratching my head. Meijer brand facial wipes. A fountain soft drink. Meijer brand frozen fruit (I’ve never bought frozen fruit), Meijer brand grated Parmesan, Meijer brand waffles (I’ve never bought waffles, either), ready to eat cut melon from the deli, and blueberry muffins from the bakery. ???? There was only one coupon in the mix that I would actually use, and that was $.75 off a rotisserie chicken.

So either their system made a mistake sending me someone else’s preferences, or they just can’t afford to give me coupons for my usual stuff. Or, they might be out of stock.

On the app, I noticed Wrights bacon and chicken breasts were on sale, but labeled “out of stock.”

One thing I noticed at Aldi today. The canned hams were over in the "seasonal/limited time" aisle.

2 months ago kroger in the atlanta area had $10 off a $40 purchase of purina one dog food. Went twice the week of the sale and they never had any of the 31lb bags in stock, just a hole on the shelf. Got a rain check. Been going twice a week ever since then and they never have anything except the really small bags of purina one dry dog food. They keep extending the rain check for me.

Went to walmart today and their dog food section was looking kind of poor also. Almost no purina one brand dry plus lots of other brands missing or low stock. Also went to tractor supply and their stock looked good but it seemed to be mostly their store brands.

I've seen it mentioned here before but something is going on with dog food supplies. I still have 4 unopened bags in my pantry but I'm starting to have unpleasant thoughts. Listening to the radio, bloomberg, while I was hiking this morning and several times it was brought up to expect another wave of lockdowns this fall/winter. So I'm trying to maximize my supplies before another wave of panic hits the stores again. Dog food is close to top of the list.

I wish we had an Aldi's closer than 800 miles!

So far we haven't had any issues with getting dog/cat food (Taste of the Wild) at our local (eastern Oregon) Pet Sense.

Holy crap- I've been wanting to smoke a beef brisket. I've only used my new smoker one time. Smiths price $59.85! So I called the butcher shop and asked if they had some. Yes and when I explained it's just for me he said he would cut it any size I want. I said OK maybe just one pound. It's $23.99 a pound!!! I called another store and they had none. I guess I won't be smoking my brisket this weekend....

If there is a better place to put this, Mods please move it.

Keystone canned meats are in stock at walmart online. These are $6.28 per can with free shipping starting at $35. I generally order these in groups of 6 cans of the same type so the box is lighter (11 pounds) and they come from the same store.
These are the common larger 28oz cans.

Keystone does sell all of their meat types in 14oz cans as well, but they are hard to find at the usual places. Ordering 12 packs of cans direct from Keystone (more expensive and no free shipping) might be the best option if you really want the 14oz cans. The 28oz cans are a better value (cost/ounce) and my preference to store.

Pork: Keystone: Heat & Serve Pork, 28 oz - Walmart.com
Turkey: Keystone Turkey, 28 oz - Walmart.com
Chicken: Keystone All Natural Chicken, 28 oz can - Walmart.com
Ground Beef: Keystone All Natural Ground Beef, 28 Oz - Walmart.com

The 28oz canned beef is $7.74 per can and not in stock to ship now, but here's the link.
Beef: Keystone All Natural Beef, 28 Oz - Walmart.com

I get smoker emails from a guy that sells his rubs. He is always posting recipes for the smoker. He says to use chuck roast if you want a cheap alternative to brisket.

This has been happening at certain stores in our area as well. Not enough employees are being stretched to the max until the only relief they get is to quit.
last time I was in there the place seemed fine, and I hear that they were looking at expanding the store

Chuck roast is my favorite cut. I watch for the sales but even those are getting fewer and farther in between,

While at my sisters house, next county over in north central Indiana, we went to her tiny little farmers market. 8am.
Made a beeline for the beef farmer stands.

Wow. I had my heart set on bringing home some beef but I just can’t afford those prices!

I know “why” they’re higher and appreciate the quality as well as the money/time the farmer puts in, but one example was $40/5lbs of ground beef!

You can go from there to imagine what prices were for all the other cuts.
I bought nothing, was really tempted though, even if it meant only buying one, good chuck roast or two good sirloin steaks but I didn’t.

While telling hubby this story last night he commented that he might start looking into “going deer hunting” or finding some decent venison around here.

Went to the dollar tree today, and there was a sign on the door that said "closed due to the lack of help"
When to our dollar store Sunday. ..sign on door...help wanted...
Food on trolleys all over the store..can't get it stocked.
Could see where people were ripping the plastic and removing one of what they wanted...they redid the store..a few weeks ago and it has been that way since they redid it.....they did add a lot more items...
They just don't have enough help....

Man! Who can pay $36.34 for a 28oz can of Keystone ground beef? I sure can't. That's the price. I just checked.

Had to go into town to get a truck window replaced, so figured I'd check Smith's for any deals. I scored well today. :) The freeze dryer will be well fed this week.

Anyway, still no limits on anything, but bottled water and Gatorade are in very short supply. Like someone else mentioned, the ramen shelves look pretty bare. Of course, there are still no canning lids.

However, what was noteworthy is that the store was giving away bottles of hand sanitizer. Two or three months ago, the deal was BOGO for hand sanitizer, and the shelves stayed full. A month ago, they upped it to buy 2, get 2 free, as if that was somehow going to be a better deal than BOGO. So today they had dozens of cases of hand sanitizer at the store entrance and at the registers. People could take as many as they wanted. Maybe the same will eventually happen with canning lids. (Hey, a girl can dream, right?)
