Just contacted my feed store today to check and see if they have my chicken feed in stock (availability is more of an issue than price). My birds are on a special diet, because I am on a special diet (which mean for me means no store bought chicken or egg products).

I was surprised, the price actually went down about $2. It has been a bit over $32 for the last 6 months or so, and today it is $30.49 for a 50# bag. Prices in 2018-2019 varied from $27-$29 most of the time (all from the same location).
ah good news
thats nice even if its 2 bucks

Years ago I read about how dangerous LED lights are. In time they damage the eyesight and give early cataracts. They block the bodies melatonin so it's harder to sleep, and they emit a high frequency buzzing sound that we can't hear, but it affects our brain and can induce depression. After reading that I got rid of them yrs ago and stocked up on the incandescent ones. And since my house is so cold I WANT the heat from them.

The bright daylight LED's and fluorescents, in the high K values, produce the blue light which is harmful to the eye retina.

Fluorescents produce the UV light source which is also harmful.

Both the fluorescents and LED's can be found in the lower K values, like around 2700-3000.

The blue light is found in the higher K (Kevin) values.

Some people who spent lots of time on the computer develop very sore eyes from the blue
light. They clip on a BluBlocker lens for fast relief.

Many people find long term use of the bright white LED flashlights irritating to the eyes.
There are some warm light LED flashlights, but not many on the market.

One simple and inexpensive source of light in a SHIT event would be to have on hand,
a 7AH gel rechargeable battery, 2-5 watt DC LED's in the 2700 K value area in the E27 or 26 base,
so it will fit into most of our lamps, along with a 12 volt 20 watt solar panel (Mono is better then Poly)
Some inexpensive alligator clips. The 20 watt 12 volt solar panel makes for a nice marriage at 1.6 amps
charging. An inexpensive multi-meter would be nice to keep an eye on things.

I noticed last summer fly swatters were more difficult to find in the stores.

In Iowa we have lots of those pesky house flies.

I will also take a fly swatter with me on walks in the woods with the dogs.
It works out great for chasing the little flying pests away, lots of hand/arm exercise.

The only fly swatters I've seen in many, many years have been super flimsy. And the plastic flaps crack and fall apart really easy. I'm saving the handles so I can bind two of them together into one that will be stronger. Then I'll make a flap from window screen and put binding on it and it will look just like the swatters made back when I was a little kid in the '40s and maybe the '50s.

And I just heard on the radio today that Diaper Man is pushing for all LED lights. It's hard enough to find the warm incandescent ones. I may have to go back to oil lamps someday. I have my phone blue light turned off and set it to yellow light. I do have blublocker glasses.

Too late. Replaced all our incandescent lights with LEDs ages ago.

We have a few of those plastic fly swatters, and we've already broken one...you're right.

Lehman's Hardware (the Amish folks) actually sell old-fashioned leather ones. Not a bad price, all things considered:

TxGal, my big problem with the flyswatters lately is those flimsy wire handles. A good hard swat bends them all out of shape as well as breaking the plastic business end of the whole thing. That's why I said that about securing two or even three of the handles together, in the hopes it would be a lot stronger.

The skinny wire of those handles reminds me of the small, weak springs that have been in pinch clothespins for the last several years. The ones that don't even hold clothes on the clothesline when there's a good gust of wind! Back when I needed to stock up on them, the only places I could find them was Lehman's and my local Ace Hardware.

Local CVS pharmacy Northern California.
Went inside to pick up refills on my RX bp med.
I noticed that most of the products were at most four items deep. Lots of bare spots.
The prices for hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol and bandages as well as over the counter medications were very high compared to the last time I shopped there in 2021.

Today wife and I paid for national park pass. Senior and permanent $80 bucks
Last year when she checked for the identical permanent national park pass
It was $50 bucks
IIRC, you might qualify for a veterans' pass. Been tryin' to get into my local National Forest HQ but they've been closed. I can call for an appointment but not sure how long I'd have to wait. One can go online but I see no need to pay 10 bucks for a free
pass when I'm savin' 'em time and work by doin' all the work on my computer.

You might check it out.

I am curious -- will you use more that $10 in gas to keep from paying that $10 fee? :sal:

Does anyone know if you have the current Veteran's annual pass, if you will automatically be sent the Veteran's lifetime pass?

I drive by the local place every couple of weeks, just in my runnin' around. Drivin' to the next closest place would be about a hundred twenty mile round trip and who knows what their hours might be?
Now, if'n the bikes hadn't burnt up, a nice ride up the Feather River Canyon would be a no-brainer.

I went and looked at their FAQ section. It doesn't specifically say one way or the other, but the gov't being the gov't I would highly doubt they would do anything automatically.

Here is the list of places to buy a pass. Find the one you need and they have hours listed ...not sure how accurate it is though.

Yeah. I was eligible for the vets pass but they wouldn’t accept my state designation on drivers license
Besides it was only good for me not wife
I know where my 214 is I just didn’t wanna waste time and 60 miles round trip

I hear ya. This state won't designate on DL based in DD214/215 and/or VA ID showin' Service Connected and PH. I would have to drive to the County Veterans Office in another city (even though this town is the County Seat) with my VA ID and DD214 so that office can fill out their form, to take it back to the State DMV.
Screw 'em, I know I served.

One of the suits came to my desk just now and demanded a laptop and all accessories like dock and monitors for a new person starting on Tuesday, as in 3 business days from now. I kinda may have burst out laughing.
What kind of time/backlog/pricing are you seeing? Docks seems really scarce and pricy.

I did not need the DD214 or any ID when I ordered mine online. I just gave them the DOB, ETS, Name, & Branch and it verified me with the federal records. I mention it in case you want to do it that way.

Haven't used it yet so I could be wrong, but my understanding was that my pass works for up to 3 people coming in on the same vehicle as the veteran. I think I read that if one doesn't come in a personal vehicle (as an example something like a group bus) then it would only work for the veteran.

Was in Tractor Supply getting DEF yesterday, Flexzilla 3/8"x50' air hoses have doubled in price.

Saw a few other things that were about like that.

Got diesel.....$5.00.

Talking with a co-worker this morning. He has a small horse farm in central MD, talked about the current diesel and horse feed price increases (which have doubled at least for him). He had a few suitable stories that fit in this thread.

He mentioned he blew out a hydraulic hose on his Kubota tractor. He called his local dealer. Last year the hose (and fittings) was $41... this year's price $308 !!! He said "No thanks", called a local guy he knows that makes hoses, told him what he needed and the guy is going to make it for $28.

Prices of Kubota tractors also went up by about 33%. His neighbor was looking at a model that costs roughly $22k. When he went to the dealer it was around $33k. So the neighbor also said "No thanks" and bought a completely different one from a different manufacturer. Apparently this Kubota dealer isn't known for it's "service" (or attitude of employees from the sound of it), they have tractors all over the place - none are selling.

Same guy also called around for an oil change for his diesel truck. It was $99, now it's $140 and they couldn't get him in until the beginning of June! .... unless ... you are now part of the dealership's VIP service (which costs around $50 a year). Then they could get him in next week! So I guess that's the latest SCAM since they aren't selling as many cars. (He bought the stuff and did it himself, btw).

For anyone considering/needing t-posts, fencing (goat, horse, field, etc.), or cattle panels, don't wait much longer. All are fast becoming short in supply, and from what we can tell from purchases last year, have about doubled in price...and that's when you can get any of them. What we've been hearing when things are out of stock is 'they're on order, not sure when there coming in' or worse - can't get them back in stock.

We're adding a small project here at the homestead, and figured we'd likely need more fencing for it. We also like to keep spare fencing and t-posts on hand for the odd things that pop up. We already have plenty of staples, clips, t-post drivers (one and a spare), etc. Guess we'll be buying more than we thought we'd need, just to be safe. Sigh...it's always something nowadays.

I can second what TxGal just said.
I bought all the fencing supplies the farm store in the Big town had, and it wasn't enough for my project.
Checked online inventory at the store in the Medium Town, and they supposedly had plenty of what I needed. Got there 30 minutes after they opened, and everything I wanted was gone. I was able to substitute and I think I can get what I need done.
I pretty much cleaned out their inventory of temporary fence posts.

Owner was called yesterday to fix a fluorescent light which had gone out in the Pastor's Office. Not a critical (he says there are three similar units of which one quit altogether) but this morning he went to the church.

Now back, he reports the issue was the "electronic ballast."

"Electronics are sensitive" he says. "The T-8 bulb starter filament burns out - you see the dark at one end of the tube - and if it shorts out, it takes the electronic ballast with it. The old transformer/oil filled units were a lot more rugged - but those haven't been available since the last century."

"AND" he continued, "I got the LAST 4 x T-8 ballast available at Lowes. They still have the 5-pack - a couple of packages anyway, but who wants $130 worth of ballasts you won't need for a while."

Um - maybe he should go back and buy the 5-pack? Who knows when the next ones will be coming in from Taiwan?

I've re-lamped my shop with drop in LED tubes.

Get the ones that don't require a ballast. You just put line voltage to the tombstones on one end...and done.

Abandoning the ballast solves many problems and cuts the parasitic loss.

We just made a run for fencing supplies. There were plenty of t-posts in various lengths, but the fencing itself is another story. We got two of the last four 100-ft field fencing rolls, although there were some others in different sizes. Some. I was sorely tempted to buy the other two. Even barbed wire was pretty darn low, and we're a big cattle county here. There are no 10-ft cattle panels in stock anywhere around us, but the larger lengths are available (boy howdy have they gotten expensive!). We bought more t-posts, the darn things last just about forever. Almost $6 each now. Wow.

There were no decent length rolls of hardware cloth (what I call bunny wire), 5 or 10ft isn't anywhere near enough. I have to go near a Home Depot and Lowe's this week, and I'll stop in there and see what they actually have in stock. Since that's what we use on all of our chicken and duck housing, I want a few more larger rolls in case of unexpected repairs or - increasingly looking more likely given the tanking economy - the need to expand our flock and our housing.

I am so thankful we kept every extra metal roofing sheet/remnant piece of sheet metal roofing that we used on building our current poultry housing.

Went to our local feed store up near Parker Ranch. Asked for shots for my two dogs and found out they have been waiting 2 months for them to come in ! This feed store supplies a ranch with 30,000 cattle and lots of horse and herding dogs.
Is there anyway you can call feed stores on other islands and have them sent to you?

And if you have friends or relatives coming to visit you from the mainland, that they could bring to you when they come?

Can you order them online?

Lots of things are beginning to become hard to find on Kauai too. V

Well we got in six of the dozens of label printers I ordered a year ago. And of course just out of spite, the company changed their printers so they don't take generic labels (99 cents to $2 per roll of 500) anymore, and require their branded labels that cost literally $16 per 500. Whatever, cost of business, roll it into the customer pricing... except they can't deliver them labels either.

Can't get the shots shipped in because they have to be refrigerated. Called our vet
and he has them . Will cost me between $50 and $100 each as opposed to around $15 each. But they are

A quick update on our fencing hunt. It's just not getting any easier.

I checked the nearest Home Depot online for stock on hand. I wanted 1/2" 4ft x 25 foot rolls (actually, 50ft rolls would be better, but I'm not seeing them anywhere). Showed in stock, but when I got to the store there was just a big hole where they'd been. Back-up plan was 3ft x 25 foot rolls. There should have been 12, but when I got there, only one was on the shelf. I took it, but my gosh the darn thing was almost $60! At least twice what we used to pay, I believe.

It's just getting uglier every day. And, of course, gas went up overnight a lot, but that's another thread. :-)
