…… Lesion on Tongue won't Heal

Have a lesion on the right side of my tongue, it's from a really bad bite, that's not healing. It was sorta healed, and then I accidentally bit my tongue again. I also realized that I'm grinding my teeth when I sleep, working on getting a dental dam for that issue, and I sometimes catch the side of my tongue. The cpap mask doesn't help any either.

Well anyway, doc wants to biopsy and we're talking a huge hole here... so I'm wondering what I can try, over the counter/herbal wise to get it healed up. I have oil of oregano, but am not sure how to use it... it was one of the suggestion in my google search but didn't see how to use the stuff, apply it directly, dilute and then apply? I'm going to order some l-lysine and some colloidal silver to see if that will help. I know there's some honey from down under that's also supposed to work but I don't remember the name.

Suggestions would be helpful because that prescription oral mouthwash the doc ordered is one not only nasty but also contains saccharine which gives me horrible migraines.

I have been doing salt water rinses and have tried peroxide, the peroxide had no affect on the area at all.

Prayers for you, Packy but get it looked at! I had something on my toungue I never saw or felt till a routine dental visit the dentist asked how long I had the lunp on my tougue.. it was way in the back that she could see with the oral exam. I never saw it. got a biospy and 3 stitches... don;t wait too long. I was lucky! I'll never forget a lady I saw as a child... her cheek, jaw and tongue were gone ...

I'll see if I can get in for this coming Thursday the, OC has that day off. The ENT just seems a little on the "I don't really know what I'm doing side" if you know what I mean.

Packy, Neosporin IS external ONLY.

Ohio state University developed a tongue bandage for this kind of thing which is a Vitamin A soaked pad. It's not for sale yet so, If it was me, I would try regularly rinsing mouth with peroxide (better idea would be colloidal silver) then applying liquid Vitamin A to wound ( from QTIPs soaked with the Vitamin A obtained from snipped open Vit A gel caps) and not eating or drinking anything except water between meals. I'm not a medical professional, so use your own and your doctor's advice, but that's what I'd do for me.
Ora-jel oral anesthetic and coating for mouth/gum wounds is also a good choice.

Biopsy shouldn't leave a big hole. Or if you mean the lesion is already a big hole, the biopsy shouldn't add to your trouble much. If you have a site that you're wounding repeatedly, that's a prime candidate for something malignant.
Yes. Sorry to say, but my dad's false teeth kept rubbing against his tongue in 1986. He was always drunk so didn't notice he got a tumor on the tongue. It was large like a very large grape. Needed treatment. Died 3 yrs later after suffering. The chemo made it spread to the neck. Getting it out now while small chances are excellent in my dumb opinion. Get rid of the cause especially too. Those two things should have you back to normal in no time.

Night guard for sure. I have a problem with bruxism. If you get fitted with something protective, your oral health may improve. Good dentists are probably preferred to MD’s when oral health is the issue. Generally speaking, mouth wounds heal pretty quickly. I’d try to find out why yours isn’t doing that.

Is your dentist wanting to fit you for a custom bite guard? Those cost several hundred and will take a little while to get made. I’ve been wearing a bite guard for 6 years and it’s just an over the counter one you can get at Walmart or CVS type place for about $25.

Get the kind that has a thin strip that connects the bite guards like this one

Don’t get one like this that has a lot of bulk across the front of your mouth. You can’t close your mouth all the way so you slobber and end up pulling it out while your sleeping bc it’s uncomfortable.

Not medical advice, just what I did: rinsed with warm salt water and then a few hours later rinsed with diluted peroxide (3 parts peroxide to 1 part warm water) throughout the day. Rinse with warm salt water after meals. My dentist suggested Peroxyl instead of peroxide (less drying). This is over-the-counter: I get it at Target. Walmart may have it, too. If you want to save some money, though, the peroxide does work (make sure it's fresh)! The last injury I had like that healed in about 3 days.

This is what my Rheumatologist and Dentist recommend. I have Lupus caused mouth sores, occasionally, and it works for me.

... stop biting your tongue.

On a serious note, gauze saturated with castor oil.

Castor oil for tongue sores - Google Search

"Soothe Mouth Sores The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil make it the perfect natural remedy for treating mouth sores. To address sores in your mouth, apply a small amount of castor oil or peppermint oil to the area.

Yes! I went in to the dentist for a cleaning with five mouth sores one time. It was late winter, and I was at the tail-end of a cold-flu combination, plus I had bitten my tongue trying to chew some really tough steak. He highly recommended the Peroxyl. Given that I was out of peroxide, I bought some and tried it -- it worked. I try to keep a bottle around during the winter.

Dab on aloe vera gel. Apply a thin layer of aloe vera gel directly on the cut and surrounding skin. This can quickly soothe any pain or discomfort you may have. Aloe vera can also help your tongue heal more quickly.

I keep biting the same spot, it heals up and then I accidentally bite it again, sometimes I bite the side of my tongue in my sleep.

I was doing a little bit more reading I stopped taking B12 a year ago because it contained sorbotal if you don't have IBS you won't understand. So took some a bit ago. I'll be calling my ENT tomorrow, which was our agreement anyway, to update him on my healing progress. Praying I can get an appointment this week, I'll do the biopsy just to be on the safe side. and yes a mouth guard would probably do me wonders.

I'm thinking the peroxide I used was an older bottle, I'll see if the pharmacy at HyVee has this product. Do you know if this contains any artificial sweeteners?

I've had the prescription mouthwash for mine, but the Colgate Peroxyl works just as well.

Given that it's Colgate, it probably does. I didn't think about that because I don't swallow it. HyVee should have
fresh peroxide, which is cheaper, anyway.

I've had two dentists recommend the Peroxyl over the prescription stuff, which is mostly peroxide, anyway! LOL. They just get more money for it because it has an advanced numbing agent.

Honestly, I used warm salt water for many years and still do. Can't beat the price.

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW BIG THE "Biopsy" will be!
I turned DOWN a doctor who insisted he was gonna do a "fist sized" biopsy on my breast for a tiny "suspicious area" on an XRAY! That would have been the entire breast just to "check"!!!
He THREATENED ME with dire revenge consequences if I refused (military medicine) Good thing I did refuse! It was nothing. He asserted he could "MAKE ME" submit to his "care", or lose my dependent medical care entirely! He LIED.

I agree with this. My mom had a small bump, what looked like a blood blister, come up on one side of her tongue. Doctor insisted she needed a biopsy. She consented. It turned out not to be anything serious, but she lost a lot of her sense of taste. One side of her tongue has no feeling in it even after several years. The larger the biopsy, the more sense of taste you will lose.

Stop the hydrogen peroxide. It will make the hole bigger. My dad use to put hydrogen peroxide in his ear cannal to heal an infection. It put a hole in his ear drum. Hydrogen peroxide is to be use short term. Once or twice. Try summerthymes suggestion. She knows alot. Aloe also heals GI ulcers. Colloidal silver will kill the germs. Salt water keeps the germs that are present from multiplying and is soothing. Good luck.

DoTerra makes a mouthwash called Onguard. Its a little expensive but you can dilute it.

I know you could make it i think it's peppermint, clove, orange peel, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, bit of myrrh some monk fruit for sweet and citric acid, xylitol, and water.

Yep that's why I buy it and dilute it lol

All of those things above are good for mouth hygiene btw.

I read that peppermint oil works well, I’m allergic to half the ingredients you listed, but I may buy some for Orion Commander.

I sure hate it for you, Packy. Lots of suggestions above so as you research, I hope you
find something to help. I would lean towards Summerthyme's suggestion. She really knows her stuff. Others would come in second place. :-)

Do you have Bonjela in the US,

s-l400.jpg

Bonjela is a clear gel, which is applied to the inside of the mouth or gums. It contains choline salicylate (a pain killer and anti-inflammatory) which soothes the sore areas in the mouth, and antiseptic called cetalkonium chloride, which kills bacteria and helps prevent infection.

Bonjela can be used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and help fight infection in infant teething, mouth ulcers, cold sores, and sore spots due to dentures in adults and orthodontic devices in children.

I don't know why I didn't think of colloidal Silver to rinse mouth. It is much better than peroxide!

I’ll have to compare this to oragel now, thanks.
