Attacking the official ambassador from a sovereign nation is almost as bad as intentionally bombing the embassy. It looks like, in reality, they destroyed both. However, it is hard to tell with the breaking news. In this case, "intention" may not matter much unless Iran decides to hold its fire because they are being manipulated into a response.

Also, the West tends to forget that the leader of Syria knows a lot more about Western culture than the West understands about him. He was an eye doctor in the United Kingdom with no plans to take the job; boom, he was in charge when a crisis in the hereditary presidency happened.

The Brits and the Americans thought he would be their flunky, but they were wrong.

Yes, and no. Bombing/harming the ambassador/embassy of an enemy within your borders, that you allowed/invited there for DIPLOMACY so that your nations can have better understanding/ cooperation... TOTALLY unhinged move that will lead to NO countries trusting you.

Bombing a government building of one enemy that is in another enemies country- to actively plan to attack you... thats just another LEGITIMATE MILITARY TARGET that was nuetralized to protect the lives and interests of Isrealis. Being an "ambassador" or "goodwill" politician from one evil country to another does not make you the red-cross. Accepting any pay/benefits/largess from an enemy government, and indeed aiding, abetting and BEING part of the adversarial warring government makes YOU a legitimate target.

They may have diplomatic immunity and deference TO THE COUNTRY THEY ARE POSTED... but that's about where the perks wear off.

IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says the drone that hit the Eilat naval base overnight was "made in Iran" and the attack was "directed by Iran."

The drone was apparently launched from Iraq by an Iran-backed militia.

"This is a very serious incident," Hagari says, adding that the IDF is learning from the incident to improve its air defenses in the Eilat area.

NEW -- senior #IRGC Quds Force commander Mohammed Reza Zahedi was killed in #Israel's strike on the #Iran Ambassador's residence in #Damascus today.

Zahedi was preciously head of #Iran's Air Force & Ground Forces & was a years-long lead liaison to #Assad's regime & #Hezbollah.

An Israeli official told @IranIntl_En the killing of senior IRGC Quds Force commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi deals a "heavy blow" to the Islamic Republic.
"It is not clear how the Quds Force will be able to continue its activities with the same intensity without him," the official said, describing Zahedi as "the Iranian regime's representative to Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iraqi militias, responsible for empowering and strengthening Iran's proxy militant organizations, including Hamas, against Israel."

#Israel's strike in #Damascus today is a huge development & a major escalation.

3 #IRGC-QF Generals:

- Brig. Gen. Mohammed Zahedi (Commander, #Syria & #Lebanon)
- Gen. Hossein Aminullah (Chief of General Staff, #Syria & #Lebanon)
- Maj. Gen. Haj Rahimi (Commander, Palestine)

Since the Feb 7 U.S. strike in #Baghdad, we've had zero confirmed #Iran proxy attacks on U.S. bases in #Iraq & #Syria. *

It's quite likely that freeze could now end. The #IRGC has often used U.S. "soft targets" in #Iraq & #Syria as one form of retaliation for #Israel's actions.

For months, Iranian ballistic missiles, cruise missiles & suicide drones have targeted Israeli & U.S. targets in #Iraq, #Syria, the Gulf & #Israel itself -- but all launched from outside #Iran's territory.

Could that now change?

Or will #Iran hit targets in the #KRG again?

At the end of the day, #Israel's strike today hit at the heart of the #IRGC-QF's most sensitive frontline -- and inside #Iran's Embassy compound, no less.

A response is guaranteed. The Q is whether it'll target #Israel, Israelis, U.S. regional assets... or something else.

Given the #IRGC's established track record for targeting American troops as retaliation for Israeli actions, I'd be surprised if we don't see a resumption of attacks in #Syria, and maybe also #Iraq.

Plus an intensification of longer-range missile launches, incl. at #Israel.

Russia accuses Israel of 'unacceptable' strike on Damascus
AFP
1–2 minutes

Moscow on Monday accused Israel of carrying out an “unacceptable” attack on a diplomatic building in Syria, after air strikes destroyed the Iranian embassy’s consular annex in Damascus.

“On the evening of April 1, the Israeli Air Force struck the Iranian consulate building in Damascus,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We strongly condemn this unacceptable attack against the Iranian consular mission in Syria.”

Israel did not comment on the reported attack. Syrian and Iranian officials have also accised Israel of staging the strikes.

Moscow said that any attacks on a diplomatic building were “unacceptable”.

“We call on the Israeli leadership to stop provocative acts of armed violence against the territory of Syria and neighbouring countries,” the ministry said.

A top Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander was among eight people reported to have been killed in the strikes amid worsening regional tensions.

Iranian officials vowed a stiff response with fears of even further violence between Israel and Iran’s allies triggered by the Gaza war.

❗ BREAKING: The Biden Admin has informally notified Congress of a potential Foreign Military Sale of *50* F-15EX Eagle IIs, 30 AMRAAMs, and a number of JDAM kits. Israel was known to have a Letter of Request in for 25 jets, so that has now doubled.

A sticking point in the negotiations had been Israel's request to have the USAF surrender build slots, which would allow them to get their jets built and delivered faster. Will be interesting to see how that impasse was resolved.

Iran promises 'harsh' response to strike on consulate in Syria - with top commanders among seven killed

Iran has blamed Israel for a deadly air strike on its consulate in Syria, in which two of its senior military commanders were killed.

Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) elite Quds Force, died in the explosion, which destroyed the Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, a deputy commander in the Quds Force, was also killed, along with five other officers, according to the IRGC.
They are the most senior leaders of the force to be killed since the US assassination of Qassem Soleimani in Iraq in January 2020.

The IRGC blamed Israel for the strike, as did Iran's foreign ministry, which labelled it an "abhorrent" and "brutal" attack.
Tehran's ambassador to Damascus, Hossein Akbari, who was not injured in the strike, promised the Iranian response would be "harsh".
Israel declined to comment on the incident. The White House also did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The deaths of the two commanders and the destruction of the Iranian consulate are likely to further inflame tensions in the Middle East.
Iran's foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, called the strike "a breach of all international conventions".
A spokesperson for the ministry told Iranian state TV that Tehran would decide on the type of "response and punishment against the aggressor".

Syria's foreign minister Faisal Mekdad, who later attended the scene, said his country "strongly condemns this atrocious
terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and killed a number of innocents".
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan also condemned the attack, while Hamas - which is backed by Iran - said it condemned the strike "in the strongest terms".

Who is Mohammad Reza Zahedi?
A top commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Guardsman Brigadier General Zahedi was a leading figure in its elite Quds Force - a unit specialising in military intelligence and unconventional warfare.
He was a mid-ranking commander during the Iran-Iraq war, having joined the IRGC two years after the revolution of 1979.

Having previously served as a commander in the Revolutionary Guard's ground forces, he served as the head of the Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon until 2015.
According to the IRGC-affiliated Sabereen News, Guardsman Brigadier General Haji Rahimi was one of Mr Zahedi's deputies.
He earlier served as the deputy commander of the IRGC Quds Force for coordination but was recently sent to Syria upon his own request to serve as Mr Zahedi's deputy.

Israel builds massive emergency supply of fuel, food & medical gear to prep for war vs. Hezbollah; over $500M invested in boosting stockpiles. Concurrently, electricity grid fortified to minimize rocket damage, daily blackouts expected; Israel to halt gas rig operations, switch to alternative sources of energy during war.

Hezbollah expected to fire up to 5,000 missiles & rockets daily; officials say war will erupt unexpectedly regardless of who initiates it, most rockets to target Haifa area & northern Israel.

Israel's Most Advanced Warship Nearly Struck By Long-Range Attack Drone

One of Israel's prized Sa'ar 6 class corvettes, the country's most advanced warship, came very close to being struck by a long-range one-way attack drone that was launched from Iraq. The ship was sitting docked in Eilat, on the Gulf of Aqaba, when the drone came screaming in, impacting a large warehouse building on the pier beside it.

After the drone hit Eilat, there was a separate and unprecedented Israeli airstrike on a building next to the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, Syria, which killed top Iranian commanders in the region. We are now likely to see many more of these highly targeted long-range attacks from Iranian proxies in the hours and days to come.
Imagery from the morning after the night-time attack on Eilat shows the damage done to the pier-side structure, with an older Sa'ar 4.5 still in port across from it. The Sa'ar 6 can be seen in a video filmed from a distance of the actual attack which indicates it was the intended target. Striking Israel's most advanced warship would certainly have been a major victory for the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of Iranian-aligned militias, under which is said to have launched the drone.
The Navy pier in Eilat which was targeted. (Google Earth)
"This is a very serious incident," Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, said about the strike on Eilat, according to The Times of Israel's Emanuel Fabian. Hagari further said that the drone was "made in Iran" and the attack was "directed by Iran." In a post on X, Fabian added that he had been told "that the IDF is learning from the incident to improve its air defenses in the Eilat area."

Israel's Sa'ar corvettes are critical assets in the Red Sea more than ever as Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have launched repeated long-range attacks at Israel via the southern vector. Houthi drones and missiles have often flown over or near the Red Sea on the way to their intended targets to the north, although very few have made it to them. The bulk of these attacks were rebuffed by U.S. Navy warships operating in the northern Red Sea. Since then, American and other coalition naval operations have moved south to deal with the crisis around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It isn't clear what external support still exists for defeating long-range drone and missile attacks against Israel via the Red Sea. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have used their own air defenses, including everything from ballistic missile interceptors to fighter aircraft, to counter these lower-volume attacks.
The Sa'ar ships are multirole weapons and the newer Sa'ar 5 and Sa'ar 6 class types are capable of deploying Iron Dome at sea, which you can read more about here. They also provide intelligence to Israel's larger integrated air defense system — the most capable and dense system of its kind on Earth. You can read all about the organization and features of the IDF's counter-air umbrella in this past feature.

A Sa'ar 6 corvette of the Israeli Navy. (IDF) A Sa'ar 4.5. (IDF)
The fact that the drone made it to its target area successfully is quite concerning and launching it out of Iraq would provide a unique vector of attack. These drones can also fly circuitous routes to their targets, using an autopilot to reach a set of coordinates that they will dive onto and detonate. The distance between the southwestern border of Iraq and Eilat is just over 300 miles, at the shortest. The drone would also have had to fly over Jordan or Saudi Arabia to reach its final destination.
(Google Earth)
The latest attack on Eilat is also significant as it is very clear what was targeted and shows a level of sophistication on the part of Iraqi militias that is concerning. Ships are at their most vulnerable in port. Israel's relatively small but potent Navy needs every hull it has and especially those of its most advanced class.

The Islamic Resistance of Iraq, like the Houthis, states that its recent expanded attacks are in direct response to Israel's assault on Gaza. While Tehran has tried to distance itself from the group's actions when convenient, there is no doubt as to the deep connections between the two. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in particular, funds and supplies weapons and training to the groups placed under this collective banner. The timing of an Israeli airstrike today in Damascus, arguably the most brazen of Israel's campaign of airstrikes against Iranian interests in Syria, is also very interesting. It came after the attempted hit on Israel's corvette, with an air-to-ground weapon blasting a consular building right next to the Iranian Embassy in Syria's capital Damascus.
The strike is said to have killed three top IRGC commanders, including Mohammad Zahedi, the top Quds Force commander in the region. Iranian ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, has stated that at least five people were killed in the strike and that Tehran's response would be "harsh," according to Reuters. The Quds Force is the external operations branch of the IRGC.

It isn't clear if these two attacks are tied in any way, and they are unlikely to be directly, but they are both significant escalations, with the attack in Damascus being a huge one that is likely to have consequences that will echo for some time — some of which will likely be the activation of proxies in the region, including in Iraq, to send many more drones at key targets in Israel. And of course, Iran has Hezbollah in Lebanon which, if fully activated, could open up a new and extremely volatile front on this now six-month-long war.

Joe Truzman
@JoeTruzman
Difficult to tell but the target of the attack may have been a Saar 6 class corvett that appears to be docked adjacent to the area that is hit by a drone in Eilat, Israel tonight. If true, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq was meters away from achieving a hit on the Israeli navy.

After today’s strike in #Syria, I’m already seeing the most ludicrous arguments that it’s #Israel pushing the region into war. What do these voices think #IRGCterrorists were doing in #Iran’s consulate in Damascus? Arguing the fine points of international law? They were plotting lethal operations against the Jewish state. Around 600,000 Americans were in Israel prior to October 7. No other state would tolerate such an assault, and Israel is no exception. An Iranian consulate was doubling as a Quds Force operational planning headquarters. Department 2000, which Mohammad Reza Zahedi commanded, resources an internationally sanctioned foreign terrorist organization Hezbollah. Those portraying Israel as the aggressor either have no idea what they are talking about or are pumping out Iranian propaganda.
