I have warned about this scenario. The US is doing everything to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East. The problem is that it doesn't work that way.
The US cannot be passive and believe that the conflict will die out. The effect of US passivity is that the situation will escalate beyond control.

Security Council holds emergency meeting on attacks in Belgorod, Russia
30 December 2023Peace and SecurityA senior UN political affairs official condemned attacks against the Russian city of Belgorod, located near the Ukrainian border, as he briefed the Security Council at an emergency meeting convened on Saturday afternoon.
At least 18 civilians were killed and more than 100 injured in an attack on Belgorod, said Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General in the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UN DPPA), briefing the Council on the latest developments.
Russia had called for the emergency meeting following reported attacks on Belogorod. Located about 40 km north of the Ukrainian border, Belgorod is home to more than 300,000 residents.
The emergency session was held less than 24 hours after the Council convened a meeting on Ukraine following large scale attacks by Russia against Ukrainian towns and cities.
‘We unequivocally condemn attacks’
“We unequivocally condemn all attacks on cities, town and villages, in Ukraine and in the Russian Federation,” Mr. Khiari said. “Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must end now.”He said that even as the Council meets today, reports of new air raid alerts were also coming in from across Ukraine, including in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Cherkasy, Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Indeed, just a few hours ago, the city of Kharkiv was reportedly attacked, resulting in civilians injured and civilian infrastructure damaged, he said.

Read once again chapter 3 of the novel “Alas Babylon” and notice the parallel to today. Their trigger for WW3 was an accidental strike on a Russian base at Latakia, Syria and today we have a live fire situation at nearby Allepo, Syria involving the USA and Iran (an ally of Russia). Throw in an Israel strike on the Iran nuclear sites and Russia’s threats of nuclear strikes on the West (US) and this could go south VERY quickly. Tighten up your prep plan NOW (as in declare “Alas Babylon” for you and yours)!

At my count, #Iran-directed militants have launched 138 attacks on US forces in #Iraq & #Syria since October 18 (i.e. in 78 days).
Until now, U.S. retaliatory strikes in both countries have done nothing to enforce deterrence.
