I would like to see photo's to see if its as bad as Jack says. I think this is a ploy to get extra FEMA money.
Why didn't they ask the "guests" to clean up after themselves before they discharged them? THey should have provided trash cans and cleaning supplies and had someone delegate the chores to be done and divided the crowd into groups.
Are there pictures? Made up stories like these floated around after Katrina, and were found to be false. I'd wait for proof before you start denigrating the evacuee's again.

I can't figure you out, Barry, I can link to two current threads right now where you say just the opposite.
I think these problems are directly linked to those shelters that house NOLA evacuees, that is what the discrepancy is, but you want to defend them still.
Even the good people of NOLA, know they have freaks among them that is tainting all evacuees, that isn't right.
The murder rate went up 25% in Houston, no false statement here.
Barry,
You are excusing BAD human behavior with chickens and first-hand reports from members as unbelievable, with news stories to back them up.
And you yourself posted the very same thing in 2 current threads.
Are you kidding me?
No one here has picked or pecked on New Orleanians, only the freaks without a conscience that live within New Orleans.
That's well, chickenshit, since you brought the chooks into it.
I obviously do not know how accurate these two reports really are.
But review my post #40 to see why I am hesitant to accept them at face value without some sort of substantiation from an independent, objective second source....
Summerthyme (and others),
If Addison Rose or Firestoprs made their accusations about a group that was higher up the pecking order, I would be more inclined to believe their accounts without any hesitation or reservation.

Unfortunately, that is true. It did happen. Houston ended up getting the bottom of the barrel, as far as Katrina refugees went.

Barry,
No disrespect intended, but It really doesn't matter if you believe what Ive posted, that doesn't mean its false, and I have no reason to lie. Its seems you stayed like the evacuees, and then left, so you have no idea the impact made on unsuspecting communities, but I sure as hell do. I have compassion for others, but there is no reason to let people treat you as badly as these folks have, and continue to do as they still havent left yet
Makes you not want to help any more.
Huh?
Other than agree with you about the Katrina evacuees causing an upspike in Houston crime rates (which happens to be correct), I made no comment whatsoever about anything you wrote. I know that what you described did occur in some Houston neighborhoods after Katrina, but I didn't comment one way or another about that upsurge in crime here in this thread....
(Personally, I am very sorry it happened to you and your neighborhood...)
Then please DO NOT.
Folks in need do not need to encounter attitude such as yours, EVEN IF it is based on a real and legitimate situation from past evacuations...
Unfortunately, that is true. It did happen. Houston ended up getting the bottom of the barrel, as far as Katrina refugees went.
On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!" - Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Reads like a bunch of rich southern debutantes upset that they had to put up some negro refugees for a week.
One's generosity should not be taken advantage of....but one must be very careful about seeking convenient excuses not to be generous, tolerant and begrudgingly sympathetic where and when there is need.
I tell you what, the next storm that comes along, invite a few to your house since you are so generous - Let them nearly destroy your home - $hit in the floors, cuss you because they didn't get fed on time - It has nothing to do with race - It has everything to do with respect....
Tenn. Will Not Assist Hurricane Ike Evacuees
State Must Clean Facilities, Rest Personnel After Gustav

UPDATED: 10:24 pm CDT September 8, 2008
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency advised the Federal Emergency Management Agency that Tennessee will not be available to provide shelters to evacuees of Hurricane Ike.
The state is temporarily unavailable to perform mass shelter operations due to the need to recover and reconstitute shelter locations and personnel, TEMA said in a news release.
TEMA spokesman Jeremy Heidt said the state has to recover after recently sheltering more than 6,300 people from New Orleans during the evacuation for Hurricane Gustav.
Heidt said the state has to clean facilities, resupply equipment and rest activated personnel after 33 shelters were used statewide.
Note: The original story didn't actually say the people here were from New Orleans. It's entirely possible they were from here in Alabama; our governor ordered a mandatory evac of Mobile and Baldwin counties before Gustav got here.
Alabama hosting more evacuees after Gustav

Hurricane Evacuees
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama shelters are housing more than twice as many evacuees from Hurricane Gustav than they did from Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The American Red Cross says more than 11,000 people have used shelters in the state.
That compares to about 5,400 following Katrina. The two reasons for the increase are the mandatory evacuations in New Orleans and the opening of shelters at community colleges across the state.
Gov. Bob Riley and community college Chancellor Bradley Byrne says the first-time shelters at community colleges have done well. They are housing about 6,500 people.
Riley says Alabama ended up with more evacuees than it had planned on, but the state was able to adjust well. The number of evacuees in Alabama motels and hotels far exceeds those in shelters.
State Tourism Director Lee Sentell estimates that 132,000 evacuees are staying in Alabama hotels and motels tonight. Sentell says most of the evacuees are from Louisiana.
Evacuees accused of having sex on Rover

Two evacuees from Hurricane Gustav were accused of having sexual relations on a city-owned Rover bus Tuesday, Murfreesboro Police reported.
Communications records showed people tried to break up the couple a few times “but they keep getting back together.”
No charges were placed.
Some 445 evacuees spent the last six days at MTSU’s Recreation Center while waiting out the storm that left New Orleans without power. They were expected to return to their homes beginning Saturday.
In an unrelated case, two suspects arrested by MTSU Police pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of drug possession and public intoxication in General Sessions Court.
Defendant Robert B. Williams, 24, of New Orleans pleaded guilty to possession of Lortab prescription medicine.
General Sessions Court Judge David Loughry accepted a plea arrangement by the assistant district attorney’s office and sentenced Williams to serve 30 days at the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center.
Sam Shaw, 44, of River Ridge, La., pleaded guilty to public intoxication. He too was ordered to serve a 30-day sentence at the work center.
Both men were placed on probation for one year.
Murfreesboro Police also received complaints about the evacuees causing disturbances and drinking at the Shell station on Rutherford Boulevard, knocking on doors and entering residences at Campus Crossing Apartments, drinking underage and trying to sell drugs at Campus Crossing.
Lovin' the brand in 'Bama

Mayor Nagin,
On yesterday, September 5, 2008 several buses left the state of Alabama with many of your residents on board. What a joyous day for us.
We opened up our state to your residents offering them shelter from the storm, just as we should have because we should help our neighbors. Imagine how shocked we were to find out the evacuees were so ungrateful for the helping hand.
YOUR citizens tore up seats on the buses, YOUR citizens damaged or destroyed some of the facilities in which they stayed, YOUR citizens robbed OUR citizens, and YOUR citizens whined because no one gave them spending money, YOUR citizens whined because Wal-Mart expected them to pay for items instead of just giving it to them because they were evacuees. YOUR citizens caused an uproar in one of the shelters and assaulted a Sheriffs deputy, YOUR citizens complained about the accommodations and the food they were served, YOUR citizens constantly begged the volunteers, the police officers, the EMS personnel and everyone else they came in contact with for money. The list goes on and on. Some of YOUR citizens were arrested and I hope they missed the bus home, but I certainly hope they find their way back and get out of our state.
I am sure that somewhere in the nearly 4000 people that were here, someone was thankful for the help, but they would have been hard to find.
Volunteers worked day in and day out to help YOUR citizens. Police officers and EMS personnel worked hours upon hours of overtime to help YOUR citizens, and for what?? A slap in the face and a whole bunch of complaining.
I think you owe the State of Alabama and all the cities in which YOUR people stayed an apology for the way YOUR citizens behaved. Please, next time, evacuate them somewhere else, or don’t evacuate them and let them be reminded of how good things really were here.
I think that it DOES have to do with race.
Flame away....
ASSUMING THAT Firestoprs account is both fair and accurate, then that really is bad.
HOWEVER, I have run into so many people who make false accusations about New Orleanians so that they can tap into the generalized hatred that is out there of the people, that I tend to doubt the complete honesty and accuracy of such accounts without independent, supporting evidence.
Like I said, I have worked many shelters and I have NEVER seen those kinds of conditions. Not from New Orleanians after Katrina, Houma residents after one of the 1990s hurricanes, and not now from New Orleanians during Gustav.
I am not going as far as to say that Firestoprs is just feeding into the frenzy, but I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen nor heard of such conditions in Red Cross shelters. Only the Superdome during Katrina. That is REAL.
And if Firestoprs IS giving a fair and accurate account, I can assure you that it is RARE indeed for this to happen with shelter residents from ANY part of the country. I guess it could happen just the way he/she said it did -- I certainly cannot establish that it did not -- yet I still can't help but wonder if the truth is being exaggerated a bit...
I type slower than you, and I addressed your statements of disbelief in general, like I said though no offense intended.
And it is still continuing. Heck, about three weeks ago I arrested a "former Katrina evacuee" for:
1. auto theft,
2. evading in a motor vehicle,
3. fleeing on foot,
4. criminal mischief,
5. reckless damage,
6. felon with a firearm.
#1 happened a few minutes before I found him and #2-#6 happened within a span of a couple of minutes. People like this have no resepct for anything in NO, much less anywhere else.
As I understand it, the "news stories" you are referencing are just college officials grandstanding in front of the local cameras.
Furthermore, SOT, I don't know what part of the country you are from, but in the south when someone lends a helping hand and tries to be neighborly, we don't expect to draw back a nub....What is that saying - Fool me once shame on you - Fool me twice - shame on me.......
This is true. I worked as a desk clerk in a really nice motel well known for it's spotless rooms.
You'd be amazed at the pigs in our society. They could trash a room in 12 hours. It got so bad we wouldn't rent without a valid credit card and we'd always take an authorization before letting people into the room.
By the way. These were all white folk. We nicknamed them trashers and also made sure they didn't return.
