EBOLA Ebola confirmed in NYC

"New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk."

Absolutely correct. By the same token, Nigerians who have not been exposed are not at risk. Only problem is, we have no idea who has been exposed in NY, and who is now carrying the virus and exposing others. But if you don't get exposed, no risk at all.

I am completely confused on these quarantine rules.

A) HCW goes to Africa and takes care of Ebola patients day after day putting them at highest risk for infection.
B) able to come home and self-quarantine (or not) and make up their own definition of that ("Hey I didn't go to work so that counts right?" as long as they don't have symptoms

BUT: if they are positive for Ebola then
A) Everyone they have even been in contact with early on before symptoms and before the disease goes crazy (in theory they have a lower viral load) has to be quarantined.
B) That quarantine is mandatory and in some situations under armed guard if you don't obey.

The rules make no sense. If they are going to allow them to come from AFrica then they should have MANDATORY 21+ day quarantine. I am angry that a specialist in this disease (not some nurse who never had taken care of an Ebola patient or a person like Duncan who didn't have the education to know the risks) would be so callous as to cause widespread upheaval over this.

Even if the disease is spread to NO ONE else, he has turned a city upside down and caused at least one business to close (the bowling alley) because of his selfishness. If I owned the bowling alley I would sue him for lost income. He knew exactly what the outcome would be if he got sick. It has already been played out in this country.

If he were taking precautions, he would have stayed in his apartment alone for AT LEAST 3 weeks after returning from Africa. What a dingbat! I thought it would be OK, even laudable, to continue allowing heroic trained US medical personnel to volunteer to help the Ebola affected in Africa. It's beginning to dawn on me that some people willing to make that trip aren't so much heroic as clueless! First Amber Vinson, and now this numbskull. If trained HCW can't self-quarantine after Ebola exposure, it's time to rethink allowing them to pitch in to help sick Africans overseas. Sad to say but true.

Makes sense to me...

I had to make this quick post before I leave for work.

Please forgive me for this extreme Woo-woo post. Mods if this needs to be moved you won't hurt my feelings.

All of these trained medical people that should know better about being spreading this disease among the general population, seem to have a mental lapse of this can't happen to me attitude.

What if this is a psychological symptom of Ebola that shows it self even before physical symptoms.

Remember the virus in "World War Z".

Ok, I think I figured out what happened with this guy. He goes to Wayne State U medical school but finishes up his degree thru the mail...
From the post above....

Spencer is from Michigan and attended Wayne State University School of Medicine and Columbia's University Mailman School of Public Health.

I read that part to dh and we both looked at each other and said, MAILMAN? Huh? Did he get postage free when passing the course?

On the Mailman name, I had to look it up, turns out it's named for a benefactor:

http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/about-us/joseph-l-mailman

Joseph L. Mailman

Joseph L. Mailman, a prominent businessman, was deeply committed to the welfare of others. A generous benefactor to organizations concerned with health and education, Mr. Mailman also actively assisted families fleeing Nazi Germany.

To honor his memory, his family has made an extraordinary gift to rename Columbia University's School of Public Health. Phyllis Mailman, her son Joshua Mailman, and daughter Jody Wolfe believe the School's mission of education and community service backed by scientific research is a true reflection of Mr. Mailman's spirit.

From this day forward, the concerns of public health and the name of Joseph L. Mailman shall be forever linked.

NYPD Stunner: Cops Exit Ebola Victim Apartment,
Dump Gloves, Masks In Sidewalk Trash Can

If there was one theme from last night's Cuomo/De Blasio Ebola press conference
it was 'how everyone has been preparing for months' for Ebola. We can all be
reassured, right? Wrong! As The Daily Mail reports (and these stunning photos
show), the police officers involved in securing Dr. Spencer tossed their
gloves, masks and the caution tape used to block off access to his
apartment in a public trash can
.

Not just any trash can, but one on a public street corner...

While it is unclear whether the police entered the apartment (which is now locked
down and isolated), some are suggesting that for the sake of safety - not to mention
public sanity - it would have made sense to discard of these masks and gloves and
tape in a biohazard bag.

* * *
Seems like not everyone has been preparing for months (since August) for Ebola...
no matter, we are all assured by Cuomo's reassuring words that Ebola is very hard
to catch (just don't tell the hundreds of healthcare workers who have been infected
despite all their precautions).

Like several others, I believe theres early brain involvement before outward symptoms manifest. After all, there are virii that have an affinity for certain parts of the body over others. Rabies likes the brain, hepatitis likes the liver, herpes likes nerve tissues.... I think later it will be found that the brain is compromised very early on.

Cuomo and De Blasio are Progressives with a large P. We will never hear about the first secondary case of Ebola that is outside of their currently thrown net of suspects. It will be just like that hospital in Des Moines that kept the whole community in the dark until their suspected Ebola patient was confirmed negative. And the Banksters will be aligned with the Progressives in enforcing such a blackout. If more cases occur after this first "out of the blue" case, then they will have to blow some horns. And NYC will be locked down.

As others have opined you should now be getting out of NYC for at least a several week vacation.

And just imagine if this physician turns out to be a super-spreader for whatever reason. We don't know enough about Ebola to know who will turn out to be a super-spreader and who will not. Every disease has super-spreaders. This physician could be a super-spreader because of his physiology. Or God forbid, he could be a super-spreader because the virus clicked into the sweet spot of mutations while it incubated within him.

Remember, we have the Anti-Christ at the helm of the United States. Expect very unlucky, very bad things to happen in quick succession. Everything Obummer has touched since he became president has turned into a turd. This turd could very well turn out to be bloody dysentery for millions of us.

There is far too much that we simply dont know about whatever variant of ebola that is here in the US. And yet we cant close our borders.

The handling of this pandemic is insane

MSF Protocols for Staff Returning from Ebola-Affected Countries (dated 23 October 2014)

Since the beginning of its operations in West Africa in March to combat the Ebola outbreak, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has put in place stringent protocols to protect its staff from exposure to the Ebola virus and to monitor the health of its returning staff.

MSF has specific guidelines and protocols for staff members returning from Ebola assignments. These guidelines govern the 21-day incubation period of the virus (it can take up to 21 days to display symptoms of possible Ebola infection). A fever that develops during the 21-day period may also be due to something other than Ebola, such as the flu. A fever that develops after the 21-day-period is not due to Ebola.

Until today, out of more than 700 expatriate staff deployed so far to West Africa, no MSF staff person has developed confirmed Ebola symptoms after returning to their home country. While some MSF staff members have been exposed in the field, those exposures were detected and the staff members were immediately isolated and treated. Two international staff members have been medically evacuated. They have fully recovered.

MSF pre-identifies health facilities in the United States that can assist and manage the care of our staff members in the event they develop symptoms after their return home. This pre-identification practice is carried out in coordination with the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and departments of health at state and local levels.

Upon returning to the United States, each MSF staff member goes through a thorough debriefing process, during which they are informed of our guidelines.

The guidelines include the following instructions:

1. Check temperature two times per day
2. Finish regular course of malaria prophylaxis (malaria symptoms can mimic Ebola symptoms)
3. Be aware of relevant symptoms, such as fever
4. Stay within four hours of a hospital with isolation facilities
5. Immediately contact the MSF-USA office if any relevant symptoms develop

These guidelines are consistent with those provided by the CDC to people returning from one of the Ebola-affected countries in West Africa. MSF is also implementing new federal guidelines outlining reporting requirements for people returning from Ebola affected countries.

Our colleague in New York followed the MSF protocols and guidelines since returning from West Africa. At the immediate detection of fever on the morning of October 23, 2014, he swiftly notified the MSF office in New York. He did not leave his apartment until paramedics transported him safely to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, and he posed no public health threat prior to developing symptoms.

While MSF is not in a position to comment on his medical condition or the care he is receiving, the organization sincerely wishes for his swift and complete recovery.

Steps Doctors Without Borders takes to ensure the health and well being of its staff and the community at large:

If returned staff members do not live within four hours of appropriate medical facilities, MSF will ensure they are accommodated appropriately during the 21-day incubation period.

In the unlikely event that a staff person develops Ebola-like symptoms within the 21-day period, he/she is advised to immediately contact MSF and to refrain from traveling on public transportation. Local health authorities are immediately notified.

As long as a returned staff member does not experience any symptoms, normal life can proceed. Family, friends, and neighbors can be assured that a returned staff person who does not present symptoms is not contagious and does not put them at risk. Self-quarantine is neither warranted nor recommended when a person is not displaying Ebola-like symptoms.

However, returned staff members are discouraged from returning to work during the 21-day period. Field assignments are extremely challenging and people need to regain energy. In addition, people who return to work too quickly could catch a simple bacterial or viral infection (common cold, bronchitis, flu etc.) that may have symptoms similar to Ebola. This can create needless stress and anxiety for the person involved and his/her colleagues. For this reason, MSF continues to provide salaries to returned staff for the 21-day period.

This guy is beyond selfish. The news headlines this morning was trying to make everyone believe what a great humanitarian the Dr. is. BS!! He knew damn well he may have been exposed and hightailed it to this country. Just like Duncan. That is why they are coming down with it here.

I found the answer to my question. According to Doctors Without Borders, as long as there are no symptoms, life can proceed normally.
They may need to rethink that!

BTW AVOID PEOPLE (USUALLY WOMEN) WITH LONG FINGERNAILS!

If you wear long fingernails (beyond the pad of your finger) NOW IS THE TIME TO CUT THEM SHORT.
False nails now are also a no-no.
BOTH have been researched and proved to harbor and transfer significantly more infectious germs than people with short nails, making hand washing less effective with long nails.
Health care workers should be mandated to wear short fingernails.
Others. who want to stay healthy, should get a clue and do likewise.

Keep fingernails short, SO THEY DO NOT EXTEND PAST THE PAD OF THE FINGER, WHICH MEANS LESS THAN 1/4"!

Lol! DW is an RN and she's been turned off for decades by long nails on both women & men. It's part of her medical training. Using scientific lingo, she facetiously calls them "agar plates", a reference to petri dishes in which bacteria is grown in labs for study.

A blackout, hurricane or even a terrorist attack is one thing, but an epidemic grade high fatality virus is something completely different.

Imagine if any of the above, an earthquake even, coincided with such a virus - Human misery multiplied X 1000.

Seems likely that such behavior is due to septicemia from the fever, infection and perhaps dehydration. When DM passed in hospice after UTI and multiple organ failure, she had a bad day in ICU, before going to hospice where she spewed obscenities and gibberish that was directed at both HCWS and my youngest sister who was the apple of her eye.

I should note that I hadn't heard even a "shit!" from her mouth for 45 years - like when she'd burn herself on the oven and drop a casserole. LOL! We were all stunned that the mind & body can transform one into a screaming, vulgar banshee.

i have been thinking this for a very long time, but we simply didn't have enough info to really make more than a "i'm wondering..." type theory.

we heard stories long ago from africa that this seemed to be a recurring problem. now yes, it COULD be rationalized as they were simply afraid of being in the hospital for x,y,z reasons, and that would be completely understandable. then those that know better (and i mean REALLY know better) got infected and have had some real lapses in judgement pretty quickly after infection. many of these have been health care workers. again, it COULD be attributed to arrogance on their part, but i have a real nagging suspicion that although that may play a part, this virus does affect cognitive function very quickly. perhaps it is part of how the virus works to help spread it. look at rabies. that virus also affects the mental faculties. it really could be that this is a mark of the disease, but not recognized until later.

THEY HAVE NONE. In fact his super put him on the spot at the next staff briefing and asked HIM to tell everyone what ebola was and what the protocols should be!!!

I believe the 33-year-old Doctor intentionally is spreading Ebola.

To suggest doc is a sociopath is a stretch, quite a long one, really. Careless, yes. Inconsiderate, uh huh. Feeling invincible after living in the eye of the storm, could be... Otherwise nothing in his background thus far would explain a motivation for that type of behavior.

Can't be sure, but the name Craig Spencer doesn't actually scream "muzzie" and the likelihood of a doc converting from compassionate practice to mass killer seemingly absurd. That is, of course, unless his fiancée's name is Fatima Mohammed - Lol! We'll just have to wait for more information on that one.

Many of the reports are saying that the good doctor also "ate out" at a restaurant. Think of the glass, cup, plate, utensils he ate off of. What about the people who potentially used them after him. I sure they were washed, but if like at lot of places, not well.

Was he at work at the ER???
