Now you’ve done it looking at thermal, Hogwrench suggested Agm 10-256 am looking at Agm 15-256
Only thing I read is the field of view is real narrow any body know if it’s a real problem. My problem I have used military grade thermal i would not expect anything close
AGM makes good entry level thermal. Don’t get the cheapest one because the range is not that good. I have a TM 10-256. It is mountable on my bump helmet with a J arm. It works out to about 500 meters and that is all I need around here. FLIR makes one called the scout which I have seen a few guys run with 3d printed mounts.

The new one that the military is using is a hybrid nv/thermal but costs about 40k so slightly out of my budget.

I thought things were as bad as they could get back in the early 80's when the Russian hardliner Yuri Andropov came to power. The TEO curve seem to seek a low point and the Reagan came on the scene and bankrupted the Soviet Union. The curve then started rising and it seemed that I might have golden years in my retirement. That has changed rather dramatically in the last decade. The curve has started shooting straight up like Democrat debt spending.

Now we seem to have a vast array of bad actors on the scene and more arriving every day trying to take advantage of the lack of competent leadership in the world. Some are states entries like Russia's Putin, Iran, China, N. Korea, Venezuela and others are NGO's like ISS, Hamas, Drug Cartels, religious conflictors. Still others are non-human events like climate evolution, diseases and maybe Ma Nature waking up and deciding to rid the planet of the human infestation. I'm pretty sure conflicts on access to fresh water and food crises will be coming to your TV screen in the near future. Our so called allies like Turkey, Brazil, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc. are actively concluding with our enemies in an effort to beat down the US. Russia, Venezuela and China have started on crusades to expand their geographical/political control of surrounding countries like a page directly out of the Hitler "Lebensraum (Living Space) training manual. China's current invasion of the South China sea is bringing things to a boil. China's continued use of water cannon against Philippine Coast Guard boats will soon be seeing machine gun bullets sent back in return.

Although I do not think we will become militarily engaged in the Ukrainian conflict but based on my reading of history, I have a bad feeling and a pretty high confidence that a severe "conflict" with China is on the horizon. Until the world gets their act together and ALL countries tell Russia and China to "Back off", the threat of another World War exist. Negotiations didn't work with the Nazis and it won't work with Russia/China. To them, talks are the first step towards Victory. Unfortunately, the only way to stop this type of bullying, is to "punch" them hard in the nose. This doesn't necessarily mean a "military" war. It could be severe economic like a blockade of all trade/travel to the country and seizure of foreign assets. The longer an action such of this type takes to enact, the more they will become more embolden and their expansionist land grabs become more militaristic and their ambitions will become more pronounced.

If war does come, it will be short, vicious and deadly! The start of the conflict will be like multiple Pearl Harbors and civilian targets will be high on the list. Military targets including airbases, Navy bases, munition storage/manufacturing, Internet, electrical and water will heavily attacked as pre-war asynchronous targets. Everyone knows the mistakes made at Pearl Harbor by the Japs. Yes, The US / NATO will respond with surviving forces but munitions will be expended by both sides on a voracious basis as demonstrated in Ukraine and Gaza. Without a Sugar Daddy like to constant resupply the allies, all the hi-tech weapons like missiles, smart bombs, torpedo's, rockets, etc. will run out and the current loser will most likely having nothing to lose, will consider using their nuclear weapons to "win" the war.

I keep looking for silver linings in the clouds above, but it always seems like rain. My ability to cope, plan, react and survive as I age, is steadily going downhill. I guess that's why I like going outside at night and just watching my Christmas lights.

NYPD for 4 years and Secret Service for 12 years I’m pretty sure Dan has been doing what’s needed for his families safety for a while. You don’t get Presidential detail if you’re heads not on a swivel.
What should concern everyone he is warning is that he probably has some really good contacts in the know. Good for him for waking many in his audience up.

I'm not taking anything away from your post or Mr. Bongino's skill set, but I do wish to offer a warning to readers: Just because someone has an impressive resume in certain areas doesn't mean that they are comprehensively capable.

IOW a former SF operator doesn't necessarily know much about carpentry or dentistry and lots of former and current cops don't really know that much about firearms. That's basically why we have a division of labor in society. Most gun shop employees will have stories about a potential customer who comes in and says something to the effect of, "My cousin is a cop and he said that this is the best gun for me because..."

Sometimes, due to emergency time constraints, you have to accept something that someone says at face value but when you are able, it's always best to listen to the advice and then follow it up with your own research and practice. If you are flying in a 737, you probably don't want me in the cockpit flying the plane (unless you have a death wish). On the other hand if you have a passel of hungry kids who haven't eaten in three days, you probably would rather have me set the trapline instead of a 737 pilot. Of course it's possible - though unlikely - that you might stumble on to a superb 737 pilot who's also a great trapper, but I don't like your odds.

Preppers really need to become renaissance men (and women) who are pretty good at a lot of different skills. This will become all the more important as society breaks down and the division of labor becomes sketchier.

Haven't heard that before.... LOL!

I'm on a meeting and the participants were asked 'If you could join a fictional family, which would you pick?' Surprisingly, Swiss Family Robinson is very popular! Of course, the facilitators don't know who the Waltons are.

They were quite good at surviving on their island, even if it was largely because of a series of deus ex machina moves and some lousy writing.

Dan Bongino's show today he talked about the Obama movie but as a warning to prep for a cyber power outage. Link to listen.

Start with prayer, walk your property lines in prayer asking God for his protection and provisions.

Looking at holes in my preps, or that need improved.

Night Vision on Amazon
Wood burning camp stove I need a way to heat water for freeze dried foods.
5 pack Duct tape for black out curtains.
Water filter Berkey candles
Hand crank radio without short wave. With shortwave
Tightly Twist a wax soaked kleenex into a circle small enough to fit into a metal cup tea light, then cut it to fit, make several while you are at it. Lay the wax soaked WICK on top of a tea light ( Prop the wick on the edge of the metal cup so it wont submerge ) and lt is ready warm a can of beef stew, or soup, or beefaroni, or may even perk a small pot of coffee. It will boil two cups of water or heat food twice as fast IF YOU PUT A COVER/LID ON THE CAN/POT OF WATER OR FOOD!
Have common sense and put it on a cookie sheet or in
a frying pan to contain the rather LARGE FIRE you will get from a tea light with this wick.

When the first tea light runs out of wax, you can reuse the wick you made in the next tea light if you didn't let the wick burn up completely after the wax was gone..

Somebody make a youtube video of this so others can learn how to REALLY use tea lights in an emergency.
NEVER use plastic cup filled tea lighhts

If you heat thick food in a can, such as stew, thick soup, spaghetti or similar, there is a high risk of disaster. The bottom gets too hot if you don't stir ALL THE WAY DOWN. A steam bubble at the bottom keeps the liquid from carrying away the heat and it will superheat really fast. The entire can contents will then launch vertically into the air in a manner that will impress you and all your barrack buddies. Ask me how I know.

Not bad. Reminds me of the tuna can "buddy burners" they used to make in Boy Scouts.

So keep stirring thick stuff, ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM while heating.

For about $40 I just bought 300 large (8 hour) metal cup tea lights, as a backup to my back ups.
Of course, with a humongous wick like that they
won't last 8 hours. I'm guessing 30 min?

The Waltons were good but the Robinsons lived in paradise. Talk about everything you could desire just washing up on the beach (including wives for the boys), and every critter potentially of use being present.

In Robinson Crusoe the guy had several weeks to salvage the entire contents of his ship that was hung up off a reef. It was finally carried off in a storm, but he had dragged ashore enough to fill a shopping mall.

I'm a jack of all trades and 79. Best I could do us ADVISE others how to solve problems- I've got the skills, but no longer the physical ability to do what i know needs done.

I especially liked the utterly improbable variety of wildlife there!

Summerthyme

Seemed like at least a third of the book was "Oh look! Papa! We found (INSERT PLANT / ANIMAL / MINERAL)!" "Wonderful, my children! Let us give thanks to God for this latest thing we found that comes just at the exact right time we need it!"

Good lesson about being thankful for your blessings, but it doesn't make for a very exciting read.

Kelly Kettles are an inexpensive way to make sure you can have hot water quickly. They tend to be under $100 and small enough to carry with you. They come in small (about a pint) to a half gallon) and can use twigs or paper twists to good advantage.
or....you can stack concrete blocks 'just so' and make a quick rocket stove and burn sticks. Youtube has 'how to' directions.

1st day isn’t a big deal, I plug Starlink into my jackery 500 and the girls R happy scrolling on their phones and calling everyone to talk about the power outage

2nd day girls R grumpy, no showers

3rd day I’m grumpy, grumpy girls = grumpy dad

4th day on - we’re just cruising now, genies are wired up to everything I’m just making sure fuel is topped off

If grid is down for the foreseeable future that would suck, fuel would become scarce. I’d be smoking and canning everything in 3 freezers and starting an ice house project immediately.
I think most first days are like the one you described.

My plan is to use a couple of deep cycle batteries to run the fridge/freezers and furnace the blower during the night.

With our 1000 gallon propane tanks, I can heat the house, run a generator or use my small solar panels to charge my batteries up during the day. I have an outdoor wood furnace that I can also use to heat the house.

I have access to three wells, between our property and family members down the road. My generator can provide power during the day for drinking and bathroom use.

I have 20 buckets of wheat that I can hand grind to make a lot of flour for pan bread (I didn't say it would taste good). Freeze dried foods for months.

And of course guns and ammo.

I hate to say it but security, and medical can take down everything in a night, thus, start preparing with the Lord.

Add some good sourdough starter and that bread would taste fabulous.

You are likely to want something a BIT more robust than the 500. Like almost ANY 2000 class rig (ECOFLO/Jackery/ and etcetera.
