BREAKING Notre Dame fire: Smoke seen billowing from cathedral in Paris

Wolrd famous Paris Cathedral the Notre Dame is on fire.

Video footage and multiple photos posted on Twitter show a heavy plume of smoke issuing from the centuries-old building.

Paris firefighters have confirmed they are fighting a blaze at the cathedral.

The fire broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris on Monday afternoon, a spokesman from the fire department said.

Smoke could be seen billowing out from the top of the medieval cathedral, as flames leapt out besides its two bell towers, a Reuters witness said.

A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.

A fire has broken out at the world-famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Pictures posted on social media showed enormous plumes of smoke billowing into the city's skyline as firefighters rushed to the historic site.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the historic monument before spreading to engulf a large section of the roof.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the blaze was first reported at 5.50pm (GMT) and the building was evacuated soon after.

The cathedral is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe, and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Notre Dame - which means 'Our Lady' - was build in 1160 and completed by 1260, and has been modified on a number of occasions throughout the century.

It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, and is vistied by some 12million people every year.

Still too early to tell what caused the fire. It appears to have started near the scaffolding around the center tower, and the cathedral was undergoing renovations.

Yellow vests and BlackBloc/Antifa -- two separate things mostly. But the BlackBlocs and Antifa are vicious, whereas I think the Yellow vests have mostly tried to make their points peacefully. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So sad. They should send a water bomber aircraft to drop water on it, like they do on wildfires in the west. President Trump just suggested that as well.

RB. there is no way to run an interior attack on that without writing off ALL of the interior firefighters.

Given what was there to burn, all they were EVER going to do is protect the neighboring structures.
