Pastor: 40 infected with coronavirus after church event
An Alabama pastor says more than 40 people have been infected with the coronavirus after attending a multi-day revival event at his Baptist church

STRAWBERRY, Ala. -- More than 40 people were infected with the coronavirus after attending a multi-day revival event at a north Alabama Baptist church, according to the congregation's pastor.

“The whole church has got it, just about,” Al.com quoted pastor Daryl Ross of Warrior Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Marshall County as saying.

The pastor says the churchgoers, including himself, tested positive after the congregation held a series of religious services featuring a guest pastor over the course of several days last week.

Ross said the services were shut down by Friday after learning that one of the members who attended had tested positive for the virus. The member presented no symptoms, but got tested when several of his coworkers received positive tests, according to the pastor.

Over the weekend, dozens more fell ill, Ross said, adding: “I’ve got church members sick everywhere."

“We knew what we were getting into,” he said. “We knew the possibilities."

Ross said only two members’ cases were serious, and as of Sunday, nobody had been hospitalized, though many had reported having fevers, headaches and respiratory issues.

He said some social distancing measures were in place during the services, which were held multiple times a day, and most members skipped the events out of concern for the virus. Those that attended sat with their own families. Masks were not required, the newspaper reported.

“We let everybody do what they felt like. ... If you were comfortable shaking hands, you shook hands. If you didn’t, you didn’t,” the pastor said.

The church is located in a small community called Strawberry, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Birmingham.

14 in Texas family test positive for coronavirus after small gathering, 1 dies
"I just don’t think that people are really paying enough attention to the safety protocols and to the things they can do to protect themselves a little better," Tony Green said.

By Janelle Griffith
July 27, 2020, 2:14 PM EDT

Fourteen members of the same family in Texas tested positive for the coronavirus following a small gathering in June, the family says. One of them has died and another is on life support.

Tony Green, who lives in Dallas, said that after months of social distancing, he and his partner hosted a party for their parents on June 13. Green and his partner are not married but have been together nearly 9 years and he said he considers his partner's family as his in-laws.

He and his partner did not wear masks at the gathering, nor did their parents.

"We just felt the worst was behind the country because everything was easy, things were reopening and none of us were experiencing any symptoms," Green said.

The next day, Green said, he woke up feeling sick. By June 15, his partner and parents, all of whose names he declined to provide, were all sick.

Green, 43, told NBC News in a phone interview Monday that he has chronicled the episode in a GoFundMe that he launched to cover the medical expenses for his partner's father, Rafael Ceja, who has pneumonia and is on life support after testing positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Green said his partner's parents traveled from their home in Dallas to Austin on June 15 for the birth of their first grandchild. Ceja's mother and one of his partner's sisters also joined them for the visit.

"That night in Austin, my father-in-law became ill," Green said.

Then his mother-in-law and sister-in-law began feeling ill. Although his wife's parents and his sister-in-law quickly left Austin, the parents of the newborn also got sick and tested positive for the coronavirus, Green said.

The newborn was spared, he said.

Between June 17 and 23, his father-in-law's mother became ill.

"The pain and trauma that was yet to come is more than anybody could have prepared for," Green wrote on GoFundMe.

Green said he and his father-in-law were both admitted to the hospital June 24.

The virus attacked his central nervous system, Green said, and he nearly had a stroke. He spent a few days in the hospital. Sometime in late June, his father-in-law's mother was admitted to the same hospital as her son.

She died of COVID-19 and pneumonia July 2 in a room next door to her son, Green said. Ceja was unaware his mother was in a room next to his.

Later that day, Ceja learned his mother had passed away without any family by her side. "Not only would Rafael miss her funeral, he didn't even get to say goodbye or see her one last time," Green wrote on GoFundMe.

Green said his mother-in-law, Marisa, called him "crying and screaming in terror" July 12 to inform him Ceja was on life support.

Two days later, a funeral was held for Ceja's mother. Only 10 family members could attend.

Narrowing the guest count was made possible with the continuing bad news: Two of Ceja's sisters, one of his nephews and a brother-in-law had all contracted the virus bringing the total number of infected family members to 14, Green said.

Twelve family members have either recovered or are in various stages of recovery, Green said Monday.

He said he has had a front-row seat to his mother-in-law and father-in-law's suffering.

"I cannot help but feel responsible for convincing our families it was safe to have a get-together," he said.

The guilt he feels is overwhelming.

"There's a lot of things that I would have done differently," he said.

Green said he decided to publicly document his family's diagnoses because he knows many people in the Dallas area who are unconvinced the virus can be deadly and of the importance of social distancing. The decision has divided his family, he said.

"I just don’t think that people are really paying enough attention to the safety protocols and to the things they can do to protect themselves a little better," he said Monday.

Green said that he is uncertain whether staying at least 6 feet from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor spaces is effective in reducing the spread of the virus, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said.

"I just didn't see that six feet apart makes a difference because of the distance germs can travel," he said. "I’m still not 100 percent sure that it does."

Still, he said, he believes people need to be more vigilant about wearing masks. There is increasing evidence that face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others, according to the CDC.

On July 2, Gov. Greg Abbott changed course and made it mandatory to wear masks in public in any county with 20 or more cases of the coronavirus.

"Wearing a face covering in public is proven to be one of the most effective ways we have to slow the spread of COVID-19," Abbott said in a statement announcing his executive order.

After cases related to bars began to spike, Abbott ordered them closed June 26.

Green said he has friends in Dallas who do not think that the virus is significant enough to alter their way of life.

"I don't think they're going to change their opinions unless it bites them in the butt like it did me," he said.

Opinion: MLB season now in jeopardy after COVID-19 outbreak hits Miami Marlins

Bob Nightengale
10:55 a.m. ET July 27, 2020 | Updated 2:18 p.m. ET July 27, 2020

It took four months for the Major League Baseball season to start, and now just 72 hours into it, the season could be abruptly ending.

Commissioner Rob Manfred must decide whether to delay the 2020 season, postpone it until further notice or simply hope the Miami Marlins’ outbreak is an isolated case.

For now, Major League Baseball postponed two games scheduled for Monday night, the Marlins' home game against the Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees' game in Philadelphia vs. the Phillies.

The Marlins have at least 14 players and staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19, and the team cancelled their flight home from Philadelphia after playing three games there this weekend.

It’s currently unknown how the outbreak occurred with the Marlins, who played exhibition games in Atlanta before traveling to Philadelphia.

As of late Monday morning, the remaining games scheduled for the day were to be played as scheduled, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the MLB's plans.

The outbreak, particularly this early in the 60-game season, is baseball’s worst nightmare.

There were only nine players who tested positive throughout all of baseball the past two weeks, and just 29 players and staff members (0.1%) have tested positive since baseball re-started, but the litmus test was always going to be how healthy teams could stay once started to travel.

Well, after just three days, the answer is ominous.

The game will go on, for now, but MLB has no choice but to be on high alert and cancel further games if there’s even a scent of an outbreak.

In hindsight, MLB never should have permitted the Marlins to take the field Sunday against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park after three players tested positive for COVID-19, just two days after another player tested positive.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said the team never considered not playing, but it is now clear that was a mistake and has put the entire season in jeopardy.

Now we'll see if any members of the Phillies test positive after being on the same field at Citizens Bank Park.

“We sent a text out to our players and made sure that they knew what was going on,’’ Phillies manager Joe Girardi said Sunday. “We’re constantly reminding the guys. I mean, you have to be safe. You can’t really have a lot of contact with other people because you put everybody in danger.”

No wonder why Phillies star outfielder Bryce Harper wore a mask on the field for the first time.

Certainly, the Marlins’ outbreak is creating fear throughout the industry. How many more players will now opt-out? Will Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, the face of the game, opt out with his wife expecting their first child on Aug. 3? If Trout doesn't play, how many will follow?

“They can honestly refuse not to play, right?’’ Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Sunday. “Everybody could opt out today. Again, I think we’re getting down the road, but I think there are discussions.

“I think it’s fair to say that guys are concerned about things and they want their feelings to be heard. I think it’s fair. We’re talking about health, traveling back to their homes and their families and their kids. It’s a reason we want to be safe. They have a voice.”

You can’t blame MLB and the players association for trying. Everyone wanted to see this work. The players. The owners. The fans. TV networks.

Yet, no matter how much the safety measures and procedures are followed, no matter how many tests are given every other day, COVID-19 refuses to be stopped.

The baseball season is at a crossroads. It shouldn’t be cancelled yet. But it’s day-to-day. One more team outbreak, and it may be impossible, if not irresponsible, to continue.

The ugliest words in baseball are now hovering over the entire industry: “Wait ‘Til Next Year.’’

NFL Cancels 2020 Preseason
The Seahawks and the rest of the NFL will prepare for the 2020 regular season without playing any preseason games.

John Boyle
Monday, Jul 27, 2020 12:54 PM

The Seahawks and the 31 other NFL teams are reporting to training camp this week following an offseason that was anything but business as usual.

Teams didn't have the benefit of offseason workouts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to account for the longer time players will need to get ready for game action, the NFL announced Monday it is canceling the 2020 preseason.

Seahawks season ticket holders will be refunded or receive a credit towards their 2021 season ticket renewal for the two scheduled home games against the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers. Seattle had also been scheduled to play at Minnesota and at Houston during the preseason. Instead the Seahawks will spend the next six weeks preparing for their regular-season opener at Atlanta.

"The NFL in 2020 will not look like other years," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to fans. Players and coaches will be tested for the virus regularly, including every day for a while. Preseason games have been canceled. Everyone in the team environment must follow rigorous health and safety protocols to keep themselves and each other safe. When there is a positive test, strict regulations will be enforced to isolate and care for that individual and to contain the virus before it spreads. Even the sideline will look different. And, state and local health guidelines will help determine whether fans will attend the games. These adjustments are necessary to reduce the risk for everyone involved."

While the absence of a preseason might not be much an issue for established veterans, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll noted earlier in the offseason this month that a reduced or eliminated preseason could hinder the development of young players, particularly rookies who miss any time due to injury, or undrafted free agents battling to make the team.

"The number one thing that changes is the opportunity for young guys to show themselves," Carroll said when asked what a potentially shortened preseason could change for the team's development. "When a young guy gets hurt, it really hinders him more so than an experienced player, and that's because he misses the developmental time. So if that were to take place—even though I'm extremely impressed with our young guys and how they have learned and applied themselves to this point—still there just might not be enough time to really give them the chance, so you might be behind in that area a little bit. We'll take that as a personal competition and we'll try to overcome that, but I would think that would be an area where you would see some guys whose opportunities—maybe the (undrafted) free agent doesn't get as many shots as he needs to show—those last two games are so crucial for a young guy trying to make the club, so I would think that would be the area of focus."

4 Israeli inventions that purify the air of Covid-19
With growing evidence that airborne virus particles are the main cause of Covid-19 infection, scientists have developed air-purifying innovations.

By Abigail Klein Leichman
July 20, 2020, 8:20 am

Remember when pollution was our worst respiratory worry? Now, scientists say airborne virus particles may be the main cause of Covid-19 infections.

In the face of new evidence, the World Health Organization has changed its tune about the virus not being transmitted through air.

“WHO, together with the scientific community, has been actively discussing and evaluating whether SARS-CoV-2 may also spread through aerosols … particularly in indoor settings with poor ventilation,” the agency announced July 9.

Simply improving ventilation isn’t always possible or adequate. And although a new American study found that covering the nose and mouth can decrease risk of SARS CoV-2 infection by 65 percent, many people resist wearing facemasks.

The ultimate answer could be one or more of these Israeli high-tech solutions to cleanse indoor air from dangerous pathogens.

ProtectAir

This device sterilizes indoor air by slowly releasing chlorine dioxide (ClO2) in tiny amounts– far below the approved level of ClO2indrinking water.

“Chlorine dioxide is powerful against viruses and other types of germs because only a very small amount deactivates the virus as soon as it gets on one of its outer spikes. It doesn’t need to go into the core of the virus to kill it,” explains ProtectAir cofounder Tsvi Dahan.

“The efficiency is therefore very high. And it’s safe because it doesn’t go into the body. It stops on the spike.”

The small device can be mounted on a wall or placed on a surface and doesn’t need electricity, Wi-Fi or batteries. “For a very big space you might put four or five units,” Dahan says.

It comes with a sachet of granules to place inside. Refills are needed about every four weeks. An optional upgrade is a gel that’s a little more powerful for a large area and lasts a longer time.

“Opening the package activates the granules or the gel. By nature, chlorine dioxide vaporizes and oxidizes quickly. But ProtectAir’s formulation allows it to be released gradually and uniformly.”

ProtectAir was tested for efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 at Israel’s Amnilabs and has undergone safety testing in Israel and overseas.

“Two hours after you put it in the room, the air is sterilized and continues to be sterilized for three to four weeks. You don’t need to do anything to activate it if a person sneezes or coughs.”

The system was invented by Tsvi’s brother, Meir Dahan, who was a specialist in machine and water purification for 15 years at Soreq Nuclear Research Center.

“This is where he got to know ClO2. Most companies use it in liquid form to purify water, but he knew it could purify air also. When news about the coronavirus began in December, Meir thought about how to use it differently. He worked with one of the producers to make it release into the air consistently, 24/7, for a period of a month or so.”

Sales are beginning in Israel. “We are speaking with government ministries to get ProtectAir units in public transportation, schools, and government offices,” says Dahan. “We are also speaking with an Israeli company about marketing it globally.”

AuraAir

Israeli startup Aura Air has completed two phases of a pilot at Sheba Medical Center to check the efficacy of its air filtration and disinfection system.

Aura Air’s device senses contaminants and filters out tiny particles of bacteria, viruses, pollen, mold, fungi and other particulates.

The system uses a carbon- and copper-infused “Ray” filter, a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter, a pre-filter and ultraviolet UVC LEDs. It also generates positive and negative ions to freshen indoor air.

In previous lab experiments, the system demonstrated an average of 99 percent effectiveness against influenza viruses.

“We started the collaborative work with Sheba in an effort to reduce contaminants in the hospital, and then the coronavirus arrived,” said Roy Friedberg, vice president of Aura Air. “Now we are focusing on purifying and disinfecting the air from severe viruses, including the coronavirus.”

Aura Air was tested in a hotel, a conference room in a commercial building and a residential apartment in the United States that showed significant improvements in air quality.

The company is conducting other tests in collaboration with Israeli strategic partner Beth-El Industries, which makes advanced air filtration systems for the civilian and military sectors worldwide.

Aura Air has received a $1.5 million grant from the Israel Innovation Authority and expects EU funding, said Friedberg. “The goal is to target solutions for closed-space infections in general, and the coronavirus in particular.”

Ultraviolet-C light

Ultraviolet C (UVC) light, a known disinfectant, could be a “particularly efficient, easily deployable, and economically affordable” way to inactivate the coronavirus in indoor air, says a team of international scientists including Prof. Ido Kaminer of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

The scientists suggest a global capital investment in UVC sources — such as fluorescent lamps, microcavity plasmas and LEDs on the inside of the ventilation systems of buildings and in shared indoor spaces – would quickly deactivate airborne and surface-deposited SARS-CoV-2 viruses.

“The Covid-19 outbreak, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is posing an extraordinary challenge that requires swift worldwide action for the massive deployment of affordable and ready-to-apply measures to drastically reduce its transmission probabilities in indoor spaces,” their report said.

“Doing so will allow for the eventual return to conventional activities such as working at the office, going to school, or even attending entertainment events.”

Sterilizing air filters

A new type of air-filter that self-sterilizes and decontaminates is being developed at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Israel based on water filtration technologies.

The new nanotechnology is derived from laser-induced graphene (LIG) water filters that eliminate viruses and bacteria in water.

This new concept, re-engineered for air-filtration, could be used in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems or integrated into facemasks for a self-sterilizing effect.

LIG is resistant to bacteria and actively kills microbes and viruses using a low-level electric current from a power source. The researchers explain it’s a two-fold protective system.

“The bacterial-resistant graphene surface protects against microorganisms so they can’t multiply, while the microbes trapped in the filter are eliminated by the electric current,” says inventor Chris Arnusch, senior lecturer and researcher at BGU’s Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, part of the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research.

“Thus, an LIG air filter has the potential to be combined with state-of-the-art air filtration such as HEPA filters. The filters could add an active layer of protection, as well as prolong the lifetime of the expensive HEPA technology. As a result, hospitals, cars, buildings and public transport could all become safer spaces,” said Arnusch.

Supported by the BGU Coronavirus Task Force, Arnusch and immunology experts are testing the air filters against viruses.

Could an arthritis drug be a breakthrough treatment for Covid? Doctors say anti-inflammatory treatment could halt the immune system 'storm' responsible for killing thousands
By Ben Spencer

  • Doctors say anti-inflammatory treatment tocilizumab could save lives
  • It could be used to halt the immune system 'storm' that has killed thousands
  • If successful, it would only be second drug proven to save lives from the virus

Hope were rising last night that an arthritis drug could prove to be a breakthrough treatment for coronavirus.

Doctors say anti-inflammatory treatment tocilizumab could save lives by halting the immune system ‘storm’ that has killed thousands of virus patients.

Results of a major global trial are expected this week.

Doctors are confident the drug, which was originally developed as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, will stop the hyper-inflammation that happens when the immune system starts attacking the body.

It could dramatically reduce coronavirus deaths – many of which are caused by the aggressive immune response rather than the virus itself. If successful, it would be only the second drug proven to save lives from the virus. So far the only one shown to work is the steroid dexamethasone.

Researchers believe a wide variety of Covid-19 treatments are needed to make the biggest difference, allowing doctors to target drugs against specific problems.

The trial involved 450 virus patients around the world.

Swiss drugs giant Roche makes the treatment. Doctors are hopeful of a positive outcome. Dr Taryn Youngstein, of Imperial College London, who worked on the trial, said: ‘It’s very clear that the major form of Covid that kills people is related to... the body’s response to the virus – rather than the virus itself. We need to think about how we can suppress this response.’

Tocilizumab has also been used to minimise the danger for cancer patients undergoing risky ‘T-cell’ therapy. Dr Youngstein added: ‘We are very familiar with the drug. We know it’s very safe and very well-tolerated. The question is whether it works in Covid-19.’

An earlier Italian study suggested it might cut deaths by up to 39 per cent, but it was not a so-called randomised control trial so the results were inconclusive.

Vitamin D helps the body fight coronavirus, major Israeli study claims
Author says it is world's largest study on subject
‘Sunshine’ vitamin is like a steroid, researcher says, urging public to head outdoors; another scientist urges caution, saying other factors may be at play

By Nathan Jeffay
Today, 12:02 am 4

Good levels of vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin, help people to fight the coronavirus more quickly and effectively and reduce chances of hospitalization, Israeli researchers have concluded.

However, others are cautioning broad conclusions, saying other factors may be involved.

Milana Frenkel-Morgenstern of Bar Ilan University told The Times of Israel on Sunday that vitamin D is “like a steroid,” after publishing what she says is the world’s largest population-based study of its kind.

She embarked on the joint study with Leumit Health Services to probe whether there is a basis to suggestions — heard throughout the pandemic — that vitamin D may prove helpful.

Her team studied a 7,807-strong sample of Israelis who were tested for the coronavirus. It found that the average vitamin D level for people who screened negative was in the internationally-accepted “adequate” range, while the average for those who tested positive fell in the “inadequate” category.

Vitamin D levels of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter of blood are considered inadequate.

Frenkel-Morgenstern said that people in her sample who tested negative were, on average, within the adequate range, showing a mean vitamin D count of 21 nanograms per milliliter. Those who tested positive were, on average, under the adequate level, with a mean vitamin D count of 19 nanograms per milliliter.

People who went on to be hospitalized after their test had a lower mean vitamin D count: 17 nanograms per milliliter.

The study, newly peer-reviewed and published in The FEBS Journal, compared people who got a negative result to those who ended up both testing positive and being hospitalized, and reported a stark difference in vitamin D levels.

Frenkel-Morgenstern said the people she studied aged 50 and over were twice as likely to find themselves hospitalized with COVID-19 if they had low vitamin D levels compared to people of a similar age with good vitamin D levels.

People aged 25 to 49 with low vitamin D levels were 1.45 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than others their age, she said.

Vitamin D levels below the recommended level — classed as deficiency or, less seriously, insufficiency — are very common, and it is estimated that a billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency and 50 percent of the population has an insufficiency. Frenkel-Morgenstern said that her research suggests that some 70 percent of Israelis have low vitamin D levels.

Frenkel-Morgenstern, head of Bar Ilan University’s Lab for the BioComputing of Complex Diseases, does not think that vitamin D stops people from catching coronavirus, but she believes that it boosts the body’s ability to fight it once infected. She said that her results reflect vitamin D helping some people to experience the virus relatively lightly and stay out of hospital, and others ridding themselves of the virus before they get tested.

Frenkel-Morgenstern said it is urgent, mid-pandemic, that people boost their vitamin D levels, as the prevalence of low levels is widespread.

She claimed her findings should guide public policy. She said that, ironically, coronavirus lockdowns and a culture of people avoiding unnecessary outings, has actually contributed to low vitamin D levels that are putting people at risk.

Normally, most vitamin D is absorbed through the skin, from sunlight. “The problem now is people stay indoors or in cars all day, not going to beaches, do not have the sun exposure,” she said, adding that she believed the best action people can take is ensuring they are spending time outside.

She argued that authorities must factor vitamin D needs into future restrictions, and avoid closing public outdoor spaces, like nature reserves and beaches, as happened during the March-April lockdown. “This is why it’s so important to not close the beaches in any future lockdown,” she said. “People should go to the sun, to the sea.”

There are growing suggestions internationally that good vitamin D levels — long thought to have a range of health benefits — help people to deal with the coronavirus. A recent German study concluded that “much more attention should be paid to the importance of vitamin D status for the development and course of the disease.”

The Israeli study’s research sample consisted of 782 COVID-19 positive patients and 7,025 COVID-19 negative patients, who are members of Leumit Health Services, an Israeli HMO.

Leumit was involved in the research process, and its head of managed care, Eugene Merzon, said that it stands up to scrutiny “even after adjustment for age, gender, socio-economic status and chronic, mental and physical disorders.”

But Ella Sklan, head of a molecular virology lab at Tel Aviv University, who is unconnected to the study, told The Times of Israel that she thinks people should keep results of vitamin D research in perspective.

She said that the vitamin is good for the immune system, and that she urges her mother to take it, but thinks that studies that herald its benefits for the coronavirus may be reflecting other variables. Sklan gave the example of physical activity, saying that a person with high vitamin D levels may well exercise more, and the exercise could be impacting health.

“People want to find something magic that will change everyone’s life now, but I wouldn’t rely on this thinking,” Sklan said.

Now why would the Great Healer and Almighty Physician allow this? Lack of Faith?

God doesn’t allow anything imo. He is sovereign in his creation and he causes. His people are supposed to hear his voice and not follow the voice of a stranger. If he told them to hold a series of meetings he would of protected them.

There is such a thing as being presumptious and comes close to tempting the Lord. Kind of like those that take scripture out of context and handle venomous snakes and then are befuddled when they get bit. If God tells you to do something then do it and he will protect you. Strike off on your own and presume on his grace and protection and you might receive an unwelcome surprise as these people did.

God also gives us a measure of wisdom and common sense. Throw caution and discernment to the wind and don’t expect God to protect you from your own bad choices. Hopefully none of these get seriously ill.

My retiree female neighbor is Hispanic and had a big birthday party for one of the grandkids in her backyard this past weekend. There were so many people, they rented one of those big blow up slides for the pool. I was gardening, and it appeared they were all family. I can see where the virus could spread so fast among Hispanics with such large close families..

“Medical Exemption” From Wearing A Mask for Coronavirus (DOCTOR EXPLAINS)
•Jul 28, 2020

Doctor Mike Hansen

Recently a woman dubbed “Karen” was kicked off a plane because she refused to wear a mask. She claimed she had a medical exemption. Here is my take on “medical exemptions” from wearing a mask for coronavirus.

Yes, it would be nice if we did not have to hear mask for coronavirus (COVID-19). Here’s reality though - masks reduce transmission. And there are no medical exemptions from wearing a face mask, unless someone has a severe skin condition of their face, like a second or third degree burn. Some might make the same point as this Florida woman recently did, when she stood up at a meeting of the Palm Beach County Commissioners and said, “I don’t wear a mask for the same reason I don’t wear underwear, things gotta breathe.” I think that the point she is TRYING to make, is that the mask causes there to be less circulation of air in front of her face. And yeah its true, there is less circulation of air right in front of your nostrils and mouth when you’re wearing one of these masks or face coverings.

But does it obstruct airflow into and out of your nostrils, and mouth? This is like asking if you go to the beach, and you leave the beach with sand in between your toes, is there less sand on the beach? Technically, yeah, but its negligible. Here’s why it doesn’t obstruct airflow in and out of your lungs. It’s because air passes freely in the areas around your mask. As long as the mask is not too tight on your face, and as long as the mask is not too thick, its not going to obstruct airflow in and out of your lungs. But if you’re properly wearing a proper mask, you should not get that feeling, no matter what underlying medical condition someone has.

So its worth trying different types of masks, and and/or adjusting the fit of the mask if you feel like its impacting your breathing. A mask like the one I’m holding here, has essentially 0 impact on airflow in and out of your lungs, as long as its not too snug on your face. And that is part of the purpose for having the wire in these masks, is so that it can conform to your face, and allow for air to flow around he mask. Yes there are different types of face masks, and some have more fabric than others, but as long as its not so tight as to compress your nostrils or lips, its not going to obstruct airflow. And its well established by now that wearing these masks reduces transmission of this disease, and this has been confirmed in several studies. And there are studies that visually demonstrate the difference between wearing masks and not wearing masks, including when someone coughs and sneezes. Check out my video on airborne transmsisson to see what im talking about, if you haven’t already. And there are countries that have had such low coronavirus numbers, like South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, New Zealand…. A big part of their success is because of masks.

No more are the days of politicians assuring Americans our economy will "bounce back" after COVID-19. Now, the language is all about an economic "reset." Hmm..

Even with vaccine, ‘We will be dealing with this forever’: Virus experts Frieden, Osterholm
PUBLISHED TUE, JUL 28 20208:20 AM EDTUPDATED 5 HOURS AGO Eric Rosenbaum

Two of the country’s top infectious disease experts presented a sobering look at the battle still to come against Covid-19. Their message, conveyed during a recent CNBC event, was encapsulated in related views on how much of a difference a coronavirus vaccine can make and what reaching herd immunity in the U.S. population will mean for life across the nation.
“Even with a vaccine, there is no going back to normal anytime soon,” said Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking at a CNBC Workforce Executive Council virtual event to human resources executives on July 23 about a safe return to the workplace. “Prepare for at least eight to 12 months of this situation,” said Frieden, who now runs the Resolve to Save Lives disease prevention organization.

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy at the University of Minnesota, said it is estimated that 7% to 9% of the total U.S. population has been infected with coronavirus, and that means the worst is yet to come. He said the best understanding in the medical field is that transmission will not slow down until 50% to 70% of the population is infected.
“The pain, suffering, death and economic pain we’ve had to date — that’s 7% to 9% of the U.S. population. We’ve got a long way to go,” Osterholm said.

Covid is ‘here to stay’
For businesses and the U.S. economy, that means there will be no “V-shaped” return to workplaces.
“Most businesses in the country will be hard-pressed to operate in a way they want to schedule when we have ‘houses on fire’ in our communities,” said Osterholm. “I understand the pain and economic suffering, but I don’t see any way we get numbers down regionally. We’ve got to stop this virus activity or there will be fear we will see these peaks, but every time it goes down, it plateaus at a higher level and just comes back again. In many communities in this country, I see no way to operate as they once did.”
Cases have started to show some signs of slowing in recent hot spots across the U.S. South and Southwest, including Florida, Texas and Arizona.

In fact, both experts believe Covid-19 is here to stay.

“We will be dealing with this forever,” Osterholm said.

“Covid is here to stay,” added Frieden.

It looks more likely than not that this virus keeps circulating even with a vaccine.
Thomas Frieden

FORMER CDC DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF DISEASE PREVENTION GROUP RESOLVE TO SAVE LIVES
Frieden said one of the biggest issues is that the medical community still lacks good data on the disease, but he added, “Nothing we’ve seen suggests it will just go away.”

That’s why the measures being advocated that may seem like “blunt” tools, from extreme physical distancing in the workplace to remote work as the norm, are the best options we have to stop the virus. Countries that moved quickly to rapid testing and tracing and quarantine were able to get Covid-19 under control more quickly, but the U.S. is too far behind on that more precise tool, “the box-it-in strategy,” Frieden said.

If a vaccine becomes available over the next six to 12 months and we can produce enough of the vaccine for the population, there are still big question marks about its effectiveness, Frieden said. This week the first vaccine to go into a large-scale Phase 3 trial, from Moderna Therapeutics, started toward its goal of enrolling 30,000 individuals. But the scientific community still does not know how long a vaccine will be effective for, and whether immunity within elderly individuals will last. It also is not known about any side effects, as well as the percentage of the population that may refuse to get the vaccine.

“We have great vaccines and still 100,000 deaths a year from measles,” Frieden said, speaking about Africa. “In the U.S. we still have hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations from flu each year with vaccines, and it looks more likely than not that this virus keeps circulating even with a vaccine.”

Osterholm, who has studied the coronavirus class of infectious diseases around the world, including MERS and SARS, said these viruses are “notoriously famous for not granting durable immunity.” He added, “We will be revaccinating on an annual basis.”

Much we don’t know about face masks
One of the blunt tools the U.S. has been using with more frequency is a requirement to wear a face mask, including in workplaces. Research is starting to emerge showing the value of masks in protecting both wearers and those with whom they come into contact, but Osterholm said while wearing a mask is among the best advice we have today, there are problems. First, the masks where data has been strongest are the N95 masks that are used to protect health-care workers, and there is no way we can make those masks available to the general public.

“We have to save those for health-care workers,” Osterholm said, noting that in Minnesota intensive-care units for Covid-19, health-care workers are wearing N95 masks 10 days in a row.” But he urged everyone to wear a covering.

“Face-cloth covers are not surgical or N95, but wear ‘em, wear ’em,” Osterholm said, even though he added, “We don’t know how well they work.”

The virus expert said distance is the most important protective measure, especially in indoor-air environments, and everything else, including masks, needs to be layered on after that.
Osterholm chided current CDC director Robert Redfield for recently claiming that all we need is masks to drive Covid-19 into the ground in six weeks.

“I thought it was irresponsible,” Osterholm said of Redfield’s claim.

The infectious disease researcher noted that even in regions where citizens can be fined thousands of dollars for not wearing a mask, such as Hong Kong’s public transportation system, we are still seeing problems with Covid-19. We don’t want people to assume masks will make the difference,” Osterholm said.

Another factor, some field work in places like Philadelphia has shown that roughly one-quarter of everyone wearing face-cloth coverings are wearing them under the nose.

Frieden said there is not a lot of data available on the effectiveness of full face shields, but the bottom line is that people need to be wearing some kind of face covering when they are in any indoor environment. There has been a lot of discussion about the need for updated HVAC systems to provide ventilation never considered necessary before Covid-19, but the former CDC director said becoming infected by touching a doorknob or elevator in a building is more probable than contracting the virus due to an AC system, which was the case with SARS.

“One thing we need to do is know there is no one thing we need to do,” Frieden said. “If anyone tells you they know this virus, don’t trust them,” he added.

Living in a ’24/7 Covid world’
Osterholm said anyone who does not know a person who has become infected or died from coronavirus should heed his personal warning about indoor air and large gatherings. He recently warned family members in his hometown of Waukon, Iowa, to not hold a weekend indoor reception for a high school graduate.

“Despite warnings by others, they had it. There was an outbreak that occurred. ... On Wednesday, Grandpa died, and on Friday, Grandma died, both previously healthy. That’s what we are talking about,” the world-renowned epidemiologist said.
As businesses and schools attempt to return workers and students, “clever approaches,” such as four days at the workplace followed by 10 days at home in a form of quarantine, need to be tried, Frieden said. But he warned that the models are only as good as the data we have, and that data is not great today. “It is certainly valid to try and see, and the same goes for schools. I’m not saying we should experiment on kids, but we don’t know the right way to do it,” Frieden said.

Some businesses will continue to rely on remote work when possible and delay returns to physical workplaces. Alphabet announced on Monday it is extending its work-from-home order for any workers who do not need to be in the office until next summer. Businesses need to create a feedback loop to evaluate what is working as they try various ideas such as “de-densifying” the workplace. But the former CDC director warned that as Americans return to work and school, there is no such thing as a “work life” or “school life.”

We are all living “Covid lives” now, he said, and that means workers who demand workforce safety measures but then go to a bar with friends at night are invalidating all the efforts during the day to make the workplace safe.
Individuals will need to understand that going back to work means making significant trade-offs in their personal lives, because it is impossible to know where the explosive spread in a community will start, but we do know how disruptive it will be.

“There is no 100% safe other than everyone staying at home, which is too difficult,” Frieden said. “We will be living in a 24/7 Covid world eventually,” he said.

Chinese CDC head gets injected with experimental coronavirus vaccine
Published: July 28, 2020 at 9:54 a.m. ET
By Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) — The head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention says he has been injected with an experimental coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to persuade the public to follow suit when one is approved.
“I’m going to reveal something undercover: I am injected with one of the vaccines,” Gao Fu said in a webinar Sunday hosted by Alibaba Health, an arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant, and Cell Press, an American publisher of scientific journals. “I hope it will work.”

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that a state-owned Chinese company injected employees with experimental shots in March, even before the government-approved testing in people — a move that raised ethical concerns among some experts.

Gao did not say when or how he took the vaccine candidate, leaving it unclear whether he was injected as part of a government-approved human trial. He did not respond to requests for comment.

The claim underscores the enormous stakes as China competes with U.S. and British companies to be the first with a vaccine to help end the pandemic — a feat that would be both a scientific and political triumph.

China has positioned itself to be a strong contender. Eight of the nearly two dozen potential vaccines in various stages of human testing worldwide are from China, the most of any country.

Gao declined to say which of the vaccines he was injected with, saying he didn’t want to be seen as “doing some kind of propaganda” for a particular company.

Last month, Gao was a coauthor on a paper introducing one candidate, an “inactivated” vaccine made by growing the whole virus in a lab and then killing it. That candidate is being developed by an affiliate of state-owned SinoPharm.
The company previously said in an online post that 30 employees, including top executives, helped “pre-test” its vaccine in March, before it was approved for its initial human study. Scientists vehemently debate such self-experimentation, because what happens to one or a few people outside a well-designed study is not usable evidence of safety or effectiveness.
Chinese state media have also reported that employees of state-owned companies going abroad are being offered injections of the vaccine.

Gao said he took the injection to instill public confidence in vaccines, especially amid a tide of rising mistrust that has fueled conspiracy theories and attacks on scientists.
“Everybody has suspicions about the new coronavirus vaccine,” Gao said. “As a scientist, you’ve got to be brave. … If even we didn’t do it, how can we persuade the whole world — all the people, the public — to be vaccinated?”
Andrew Rennekamp, an editor at Cell and one of the moderators of Gao’s webinar, said, “This is a brave thing to do, and it shows his faith in what he believes is the safety of the vaccine and his commitment to the science and to public health.”
Even as China is among the leaders in the global race for a vaccine, it is also striving to overcome years of drug scandals — the latest coming in 2018 when authorities recalled a rabies vaccine and later announced that batches of children’s DPT vaccines, for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus, were ineffective.
Gao himself had also been under heavy scrutiny for the China CDC’s initial handling of the coronavirus outbreak, both at home and abroad. He largely vanished from public view for months, resurfacing again in an interview with state media in late April.
Recently, Gao has been involved in research on the coronavirus.
As vaccine research continues, China’s CDC is now looking into potential immunization programs, trying to figure out whether to prioritize children, the elderly or healthcare workers, he said.

Gao’s revelations come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions fueled by the outbreak. Beijing’s delays in warning the public and releasing data at the beginning of the outbreak contributed significantly to the coronavirus’s spread, while President Donald Trump and other American politicians have made unsubstantiated claims that the virus escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, the central Chinese city where it was first detected.

Tensions have flared to the point where it’s now disrupting research, leading to frustration among scientists who work with Chinese collaborators. The Trump administration has moved to withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization, and has cut funding to research initiatives studying coronaviruses in China.

Gao said repeatedly in his lecture that he wanted more cooperation between the U.S. and China, pleading for unity even as relations between Beijing and Washington plummet to new lows.

“We don’t want to have China and the U.S. separated scientifically,” Gao said. “We’ve got to work together.”

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police have blocked off McCully Shopping Center after a teenager suspected of being positive for COVID-19 was located there.

One of the teen’s parents also showed up at the shopping center.

Hawaii News Now has learned they are both reportedly under Health Department quarantine.

There was no immediate word on whether the two would be detained.

Well put.

Now why would the Great Healer and Almighty Physician allow this? Lack of Faith?

That is EXACTLY the reasoning the Islam uses as to why Islamic countries have not been able to eradicate Israel.

The war of 1948 and 1967 were embarrassments as the Muslim countries completely surrounded Israel and decisively outnumbered the Jews. And, they still couldn't stop Israel from becoming a nation and had their collective asses handed to them in the six day war. With everything they had going for them, they could only feel that their faith in Allah's victory was not strong enough. So, they rearmed and tried, again, in 1973... OH! SO CLOSE!!! There faith in Allah was still just not strong enough, so they tried again... and again... and again... And, will keep trying up until that final day.

Lack of faith as a reason for bad things happening when people ignore the laws God has put in place is, quite frankly, rather ignorant.

It is not a lack of faith in Allah that stops the Muslims conquest. God has instilled in them a strong tribalist tendency which keeps the Islamic countries from truly working together as a team. It happens within their own armies, as well, as Officers look upon the enlisted troops as nothing more than servants.

Genesis 16:11-12 - "You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."

It is not God's fault these church members got sick. They KNEW the risks of gathering and the pastor admitted as much. There is a pestilence on the land ( which God, also, warned of in the Bible ) and it is acting according the the laws of nature which God put in place. God cannot break His own law.

Talk is cheap
God doesn’t allow anything imo. He is sovereign in his creation and he causes. His people are supposed to hear his voice and not follow the voice of a stranger. If he told them to hold a series of meetings he would of protected them.

This is put here, Scripture verses, to reply to Hfcomms reply to me. Please do not read if you may get offended:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

1
Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses. 2 He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up, 3 the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building. 4 He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for mourning and the time for dancing, 5 the time for making love and the time for not making love, the time for kissing and the time for not kissing. 6 He sets the time for finding and the time for losing, the time for saving and the time for throwing away, 7 the time for tearing and the time for mending, the time for silence and the time for talk. 8 He sets the time for love and the time for hate, the time for war and the time for peace. 9 What do we gain from all our work? 10 I know the heavy burdens that God has laid on us. 11 He has set the right time for everything. He has given us a desire to know the future, but never gives us the satisfaction of fully understanding what he does. 12 So I realized that all we can do is be happy and do the best we can while we are still alive. 13 All of us should eat and drink and enjoy what we have worked for. It is God's gift. 14 I know that everything God does will last forever. You can't add anything to it or take anything away from it. And one thing God does is to make us stand in awe of him. 15 Whatever happens or can happen has already happened before. God makes the same thing happen again and again.

Christianity and Islam in comparison? Like comparing a bouquet of fragrant flowers to arsenic.

What happened to calling on God to Heal? What has happened to "Thank you Jesus that by Your Stripes, I am Healed?" What about the Gifts of the Spirit, one of which is Healing (1 Corinthians 12:1–31) ? What did Jesus Command His Disciples to do? And how come these are not taught in "churches?"
