Police Standoff Forces Evacuation of Federal Building

The suspect made an unspecified threat against the White House, according to a law enforcement source

WESTWOOD -- The Westwood Federal Building is being evacuated after a pursuit suspect led officers on a freeway chase and then sparked a standoff in the building's parking lot.

Officials say the chase began in Westchester shortly before 10 a.m. Initially, there were two suspects inside the vehicle, both of whom were apparently wanted on various warrants.

They're also wanted for questioning as part of a federal inquiry. According to KTLA partner The Los Angeles Times, a law enforcement source says the suspect made an unspecified threat against the White House.

Shortly after the chase began, one of the suspects jumped out of the red Volkswagen Beetle near the intersection of the 405 Freeway and Howard Hughes Parkway.

That suspect was taken into custody.

The second suspect got onto the northbound 405 Freeway and was followed by several units from the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division, as well as two LAPD helicopters.

The driver of the Beetle exited the freeway at Wilshire Blvd. and drove into the parking lot of the Federal Building, located at 11000 Wilshire Blvd. The suspect appeared as though he was going to turn himself in but turned around in the building's parking lot and tried to flee. However, patrol units were able to block him in around 10:22 a.m.

Veteran Avenue has been shut down during the standoff and occupants in two nearby passenger vehicles have been safely removed from the scene. UCLA campus police are also involved in the standoff.

The LAPD bomb squad is using its robot as officers try to coax the suspect out of the vehicle. It's also believed the device is being used to determine who is inside the car.

Police are also evacuating an apartment building aross the street as a precaution.

No injuries have been reported in the incident.

Police must think the suspect is dangerous if they evacuated the entire Federal building!

LOL, helicopter just showed a shot of a police car prohibiting a competing news station's van (CBS2) from getting closer to the scene.

Apparently the suspect is still in the VW Beetle or what?

Too much glare on the windshield to be sure.

KTLA may be making too much out of this story.

Just because it is near a Federal building now it's like DEFCON 2.

Media wouldn't have cared if it was by the RNC Headquarters! :spns:

KTLA helicopter feed is gone.

Now showing a ground feed of a newspaper stand.

Either the chopper had to refuel and the ground cameraman is on pot or there may be tactical move in progress and they don't want to show it.

I dunno ...... :confused:

If this is a terrorist and not a tourist, and he is threatening the White house from LA, someone ought to tell him his GPS is off by a few 1000 miles.

Then again he may have threatened to attend a Town hall organized by the White house and wear a "Code Pink" not to be confused with Code Red tutu, and the White house felt "threatened by this overt act"

I sure hope there is more to this storey than appears to be right now.

KTLA was back up briefly with audio...robot still hasn't moved.

According to the reporter a number of LAPD officers have their guns drawn. :confused:

also, chopper pulled out for a long shot and I saw an officer by a police car a few hundred yards back standing near the open driver's side door, with his gun drawn in the direction of the VW/armored vehicle scene.

Latest reports describe the supect shouting "I have a Celine Dion CD and I know how to use it coppers!"

At that point authorities deployed a robot which is blaring the latest Yanni live album in an effort to drown out the threat posed by the Celine Dion CD.
