On December 23 two Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles were fired into international shipping lanes in the Southern Red Sea from Houthi controlled areas of Yemen. No ships reported being impacted by the ballistic missiles.

Between 3 and 8 p.m. (Sanaa time), the USS LABOON (DDG 58) was patrolling in the Southern Red Sea as part of Operation PROSPERITY GUARDIAN (OPG) and shot down four unmanned aerial drones originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen that were inbound to the USS LABOON. There were no injuries or damage in this incident.

At approximately 8 p.m. (Sanaa time), U.S. Naval Forces Central Command received reports from two ships in the Southern Red Sea that they were under attack. The M/V BLAAMANEN, a Norwegian-flagged, owned, and operated chemical/oil tanker, reported a near miss of a Houthi one-way attack drone with no injuries or damage reported. A second vessel, the M/V SAIBABA, a Gabon-owned, Indian-flagged crude oil tanker, reported that it was hit by a one-way attack drone with no injuries reported. The USS LABOON (DDG 58) responded to the distress calls from these attacks. These attacks represent
the 14th and 15th attacks on commercial shipping by Houthi militants since Oct. 17.

This would be the First Attack directly committed by Iran since the Houthi Terrorist Group in Yemen announced their Interception Campaign against “Israeli” Shipping, with it also being Outside of the Zone which was stated by the Houthis as the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

New F-16 squadron arrives, bolstering US defense posture in Middle East

  • Published Oct. 24, 2023

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) --
The New Jersey Air National Guard’s 119th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron arrived in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility with an additional F-16 Fighting Falcon squadron, bolstering U.S. posture to deter further aggression in the region.

The Atlantic City-based fighters, also known as the “Jersey Devils,” now aligned under 9th Air Force, provide flexible options to coalition leaders directing air operations throughout the Middle East, including contingency response capabilities and deterrence missions, while maintaining Operation Inherent Resolve’s “Defeat-ISIS” mission.

“We are fortunate to have the 119th EFS join us in U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, 9th AF and Combined Forces Air Component Command commander. “Air National Guard Airmen bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our mission in the Middle East. The arrival of these Airmen strengthens our ability to support our allied, coalition and regional partners as we work together to enhance regional stability and security.”

As a highly maneuverable and agile platform, the F-16’s capabilities ensure U.S. and coalition forces can establish air superiority in contested airspace with its proven record in air-to-air combat and air-to-ground attack.

Ninth Air Force currently operates three F-16 squadrons, two A-10 Thunderbolt II squadrons, and one F-15E Strike Eagle squadron alongside several strategic airlift, aerial refueling, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms.

Imagery of operations and activities within the 9AF area of responsibility is publicly available through the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service here.

Japan-owned tanker attacked by drone fired from Iran in Indian Ocean

2023/12/24

A Japanese-owned commercial tanker was attacked by a drone launched from Iran in the Indian Ocean on Saturday, causing a fire but leaving no one injured, the U.S. Department of Defense said.

The Liberia-flagged, Netherlands-operated chemical tanker was struck about 370 kilometers off India "by a one-way attack drone fired from Iran," the Pentagon said in a statement, adding the fire on board has been extinguished.

The vessel is continuing its voyage towards a destination in India and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the tanker, the statement said.

The incident came amid a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which began on Oct. 7.

BREAKING:

⚡ The ship that was attacked by a drone in the Arabian Sea is attacked by Iran - Israeli media.

Earlier this morning, Iran struck an Israeli-linked ship in the Indian Ocean with a Shahed-136 suicide drone, the israeli media wrote.

The ship was carrying oil from Saudi Arabia and was heading towards the Indian port of Mangalore.

The ship is operated by a company owned by an Israeli businessman with links to several Indian oil companies.

Looks like the Chinese have placed their Type 52D destroyer amid the Eisenhower battle group.

An interesting spot to observe a US carrier strike group as it battles UAVs, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

Can't help but think this is a huge intelligence gain for China.

Where is the US AIR FORCE in this fight?
No mention at all of their support in these conflicts!
The NAVY cannot do it all by themselves!

The US military has its hands tied. All branches, at the moment. All the US Navy is able to do is to shoot down any drones within their range, but they're not being too successful, or all shipping lanes would be safe.

It's costing us >10X to shoot down what Houthi drones cost. Does this represent the smartest tactical move? Seems to me that we could make the Houthis an offer they couldn't refuse. Ask Don Corleone.

A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, the world’s second-largest container line, said it’s preparing to resume shipping through the Red Sea, thanks to a new multi-national maritime task force to protect vessels from attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen.

“We are currently working on plans for the first vessels to make the transit and for this to happen as soon as operationally possible,” the company said Sunday in an advisory. “While doing so, ensuring the safety of our employees is of the utmost importance and our number one priority in handling the challenging situation in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden area.”

Very true, never mind the time between paying for and receiving the replacement munition. At the same time though, even the small warhead involved on the small drones/cruise missiles can rack up a lot of damage if it hits the right place. The only "cost effective" solution is to take the missiles out at their source. This is even more true for the ballistic missiles being fired.

Important words from the leader of Yemen's Ansarullah:

We ask all Arab countries and all those who were provoked by the US in the past to stand back and watch, leave us alone so that we can wage a direct war against the Israeli enemy and American aggression and crimes.

U.S. CENTCOM conducts strikes against Kataib Hezbollah terrorist group targets in Iraq

In response to multiple attacks against coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, U.S. military forces conducted airstrikes against multiple facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah and affiliated groups in Iraq at 8:45 p.m. (EST) on Dec. 25.

Earlier in the day, Iranian sponsored Kataib Hezbollah terrorists and affiliated groups attacked coalition forces at Erbil, Iraq resulting in several injuries.

Early assessments indicate that these U.S. airstrikes destroyed the targeted facilities and likely killed a number of Kataib Hezbollah militants. There are no indications that any civilian lives were affected. The U.S. military will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of these strikes.

"These strikes are intended to hold accountable those elements directly responsible for attacks on coalition forces in Iraq and Syria and degrade their ability to continue attacks. We will always protect our forces," said General Michael Erik Kurilla, U.S. Central Command Commander.
