Started snowing here about 7:00AM and its still coming down in the form of very fine flakes and only about an 1" inch so far.
They calling for more tonight and we may end up with anywhere from 2" to 6" inches when it all done and over with. The weather service is forecasting more later this week and we will just have to wait and see how that all plays out.

For an historical comparison, check out the Blizzard of 1888 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Blizzard_of_1888). Over 400 people died in that one. New York City was literally shut down for days, some eastern and northeastern cities (both US and Canada) were apparently out of contact with the rest of the world for quite awhile, and many people literally couldn't get out of their houses for up to a week. It's a different world now, of course, but the point is that these things can and do happen.

Editor's note: Snowfall estimates for the major winter storm that's now moving over the Northeastern U.S. have been bumped back up to as much as 3 feet in areas off the Atlantic after having been revised down earlier this morning. The governors of New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts have declared states of emergency, and one was also in effect for parts of New York. In New York City, drivers were told to stay off the roads after midnight, and schools are closed tomorrow. Boston has shut its schools for the next two days, and said public transportation would shut at midnight. In the skies, roughly 6,000 flights have been cancelled through tomorrow. Main roads on Long Island are nasty for driving already. School districts in area closed for tomorrow. Winds are picking up, small flakes coming down heavily. Daughter in laws office closed for tomorrow as is sons work (multiple doc office) neither EVER close. Local hardware store with a few shovels left ( I picked up some canning jars) grocery store with no shovels, salt, milk or bread. Not much on the shelves in general. Just keeping fingers crossed that the power does not go off.

A storm system off the East Coast will continue to strengthen as it develops into a major nor'easter on Monday. As the storm moves up the coast, it is expected to bring snowfall of 1-3 feet or more to many parts of the Northeast through Tuesday evening, including New York City and Boston. Strong, gusty winds will combine with the snow to create blizzard conditions along and near the coast.

When I checked the radar about an hour ago there was a band of the heavy stuff just north of the southern tier. It was so wide it was headed for BOTH OF us.

Well according to weather underground, there's not a cloud in the sky here. Sure is snowing hard though. Isn't supposed to start for 3+ hours. Guess the flakes didn't get the memo.

Your page might be outdated, or you might be looking at the radar feed and not the satellite feed. According to the Wundermap, there is heavy cloud over pretty much all of New England.
