FARM When Walmart runs out of food what will YOU do?

Walrus Whisperer

Hope in chains...
Start shooting pheasant, grouse, squirrels, birds. Plant some melons and other fruits. Go online and find all the things in the woods around me I can eat. Where I'm at, I'd have to be pretty lazy to starve.

I guess in a pinch I could poach a deer, but the only two times I've touched one I've broken out really bad ... some allergy, but I'd live through it.
Are you sure it didn't walk thru poison ivy or the like?

I don't know if you have an Amish/Mennonite market near you, but they sell in bulk, but you have to ask/request it. Most people don't know that. I've stocked up on 50# bags of flour for $22 each. I have 3, getting another one this week. They have rationed their yeast to 1 per customer, about 8 oz. Their raw sugar is pricey, $45 for 50#. I use it for coffee and tea....and Walmart had white sugar $9 for 20#. See if you have a butcher shop local or semi local. The one I go to, wow, their prices have doubled. But, I've learned to make what I get stretch. I also stocked up on canned corned beef, and dried beef in the package. You can use these to make soups and stews, the dried beef tastes great with dried beans or dried peas in a soup. Walmart has large containers of cinnamon....Cinnamon is great for a variety of health reasons. I mix it with honey in a jar and eat it when my stomach is upset, or when I need an energy boost in the afternoon. It kills ecoli in the stomach. And I believe it's beneficial for diabetes. Walmart also has large containers of garlic powder and onion powder. Get a couple of each. Anything tastes better flavored with onions and garlic. Sorry for the ramble I don't get to talk to many adults

I went to the local supermarket... first time in a store since... I dunno.April? But the granddaughters were coming, nd I didn't have time to make homemade fruit pops.

I was shocked to see almost the entire ice cream and frozen treat section looking like Vandals had been through. I haven't seen it that empty since their freezer cases dead 2 years ago! I was able to find a couple boxes of frozen "all fruit" treats (I try to not be the grandmother who totally corrupts healthy grandkids tastebuds!) But it took some looking...

Ice cream? Why?!

I keep hearing this - people are just going to get out into the woods and eat well. That's certainly a possibility in the right situation. More power to you if you know how to trap and snare, of course, instead of making firearms noise to harvest flesh. I'm not suggesting it can't be done but is it sustainable in the long haul when everyone has the same thoughts?

I've worked in quite a few former Soviet bloc countries in eastern Europe, including the hinterboonies of Russia as well. (My favorites were Bulgaria and Romania but that's a whole nuther story).

Anyways, the wildlife in most former Soviet client states is pretty much gone, like it is out in the provinces of Russia nowadays as well. The wildlife don't last long when everybody's hungry for meat. Maybe the fish would last a bit longer because most people would be trying to use fishing poles instead of nets, but that's only a matter of time too, I would think, before the freshwater fish population would be pretty well gone also.

Lots of good fresh trout eating in Bulgaria but the only time I saw deer was on the horizon. When they would see a vehicle, they were gone before you were within a kilometer.

I grew up around poison ivy. Makes itch a little bit, but I have to get it in a cut. Doesn't bother me that much. So, no ... pretty sure it's deer dander or similar, and it's brutal. The only bad allergy I have that I know of.

I mix baking soda in water for an upset stomach. For me it's magic. Don't take baking soda
with food.
yup, I use baking soda and water for heart burn, when i've over feasted on something

. I bet most folks don't know that about baking soda.
Did you know that Cream of tartar is good for UTI's. When I was about 5, I guess I had one. Family doctor told my mother to give me cream of tartar and orange juice. It did the trick. I have often thought about that, because I'd never heard it mentioned since.....When I researched on the internet, it looks like the dosage is 1 1/2 tsp. in 1 cup warm water (with or without lemon), a couple times a day. Again, my physician back in the 50's told her to use orange juice, but I haven't found any articles mentioning that. As with anything, research before you ingest. the only warning I saw was that it was high in potassium, so if you are on a potassium restricted diet...DO NOT TAKE IT. I guess this is good to know for a SHTF situation, and you have a UTI.

I'm pretty much out in the boonies with a several-hundred acre marsh at my back door. Like I said, I'd have to be pretty lazy not to find something to eat. I'm sure I'd get skinny, but I wouldn't starve. As for the deer, I could process one of those but I'd have to remain covered and not let anything touch me. Don't really like venison tho, so no loss.

Thanks, didn't know that. I'll have to print it.

I have high arches and narrow feet. I wear a 12AA, and the only shoes I can wear that don't hurt my feet are New Balance Cross Trainers. Plus, they are made in the US.

LOL. Try finding a woman's shoe in size 4 1/2 or 5! I hate shoe shopping, but when I find shoes that fit that I like, I buy them on the spot. Sometimes 2 and 3 assorted pair at a time. I'm always on the look out. It drives Cary crazy for me to mention that I need new shoes. Bless his heart, LOL!

"Cold house doesn't stop my bread making. I heat the Cabin with electric oil heaters (look like radiators) you can touch without burning your hand. I sit the bread bowl on top and cover with a damp towel and wait for the magic. You can also sit a bowl of dough on the warm part of your fridge or freezer top. It doesn't take much heat. Enjoy!
Good idea i didn't think of that. Thanks. I do have 2 of those heaters. I suppose i am to keep it on real low setting. Great idea!"

My solution is to turn my crockpot on LOW, remove the lid, place a pizza pan over the top, then place the bowl of dough on the pizza pan, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise.

That's a good point; lots of stuff to eat in a marsh and the competitive pressure from other predators would be lower than would a patch of woods, I'd think.

You might try shoes for crews. They have a huge variety of sizes and they are designed for people who work on their feet all day, rises, construction, and factory type stuff. Best fit and most supportive shoes I’ve ever had, and the non slip didn’t hurt. Best part they have all styles, sandles, dress shoes and so on.
