FARM When Walmart runs out of food what will YOU do?

TB Fanatic
Walmart will break first because they run the tightest JIT system. The other vendors aren't far behind them, they just have more fat in the distribution system. Up until now Walmart has been a best practise case study for business students.

I used to live in cattle and sheep ranching country in Colorado. Ranchers were having rustlers pull up onto the BLM and load entire stock trailers in times of plenty. Wetbacks would kill and chop animals up with a chain saw, wasting most of the animal.

I also wouldn't put too much effort into this year's garden. Desperate hungry people will kill you for a tomato. I would wait at least a year to grow much of anything. Let the hunger and disease do most of the heavy lifting for you. We need to focus on staying low, healthy, and uninjured.

Navy SEALS and Green berets have been killed by people who shit In their hands with unaimed shots from unzeroed rifles, best not count on yer bench rest shooting skills too soon into this game. Best victory is the battle you never have to fight.

The America of old is gone forever.....we really aren't much different than Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, etc. Except maybe for the racial and political divides that will explode on empty bellies.
Can't argue.

WE were going over our ability to defend ourselves in this of need. The conclusion was that we couldn't.

The best we can do is make ourselves unattractive and a harder target, but they will still be able to take us down.

Plan b in times of desperate need will be buried buckets of food.

Don't shop at Wally World and we have our LOCAL connections. In the mean time just got done talking to our butcher and ordering our cuts for half a cow. Should be ready in a week to pick up. Just placed a veggie order with our local CSA organic farm. Starting our garden here soon. Have to wait for the mountain to warm up just a little bit more. Our hog is getting fatter every week! Planning our orchard. Just discovered Gooseberries on our new place. Generac installation due in a week or two. Still unpacking and setting up our new place and starting to unpack and set up the new shop.

Other than all that above, just going to sit up here on our mountain and watch the world get stupid and go nutz!

Two 150#ish boars.

Not hungry enough to eat them now, but it could happen.

As far as hunting them out, it's been an ongoing eradication effort for 30 years now. Still getting more pigs.

Just got back from Costco.
They have signs saying everyone is limited to 3 packages of meat, be it beef, pork or poultry, just 3 packs.
I feel sorry for people who drive a long way to get to Costco, and come only once a month or so.
They really need more than 3 packages of meat to last them

Other than that, Costco seemed to have normal stocks of most things..

Florida will be starting the 1st phases of opening up all stores on Monday.
Restaurants and regular stores will open with 25% occupancy allowed, normal social distance rules, and I believe masks.
This is our issue... I rarely go to town... generally make a trip to the nearest small city a few times a year. When we go, I stock up from the running list I keep. Yesterday, I went to Aldis... had to pick up a prescription, and wanted to top a few things off. For some reason, we're a little low on tuna. They didn't have limits on most stuff (but also didn't have a single pack of TP or paper towels in the store!), but almost all canned stuff... fruit, vegetables, pork n beans, canned meats including tuna) were a limit of 4. Normally, I'd have bought 24 cans. I had to settle for 8 (4 in water, 4 in oil). And I was thinking how my "twice a year stock up runs" might end up being a problem.

I'll probably try to see if I can order sone from Wal-Mart... I did that before when Sam's club (which is no longer within 70 miles from our farm) stopped carrying the large cans of clams. I ordered a couple dozen small cans from Wal-Mart, because they never had more than 3-4 cans on the shelf when I was in the store.

One thing at Aldi... they had AP flour and sugar... but holy cow! A 4# bag of sugar was $2.49! I need to do a complete prep inventory... I'm pretty sure I'm set for the foreseeable future, but Icringe thinking about trying to prep from scratch these days!

Shipt is next day, I have some coming tomorrow. Groceries are more expensive through Shipt, they go to the store you request but tack on a little something for every item.
Shipt still hasn’t delivered my order from 4/4! No call, no text, nothing! Pissed me off!

Walmart wont be running outta food. 21 States are about to open up and the rest to follow suit soon. Its all good people, dont believe the hype the left is attempting to sell you.
Unemployment has added 30 million in 6 weeks, small businesses are toast, TRILLIONS of debt bux printed out of thin air. You are not undoing the economic implosion by opening up for business like nothing happened. All those people that are now 2 months behind on car, house, card, etc. payments are not going to catch up.

JIT has been torpedoed. It will take years to repair it. Plenty of folks will go hungry here in Los Estados Unidos....this isn't the America of the 20th century anymore. Wait until inflation outpaces the snap benefits. Remember that "diversity is our strength".

Quite frankly, I am content to watch it burn! This is a sink or swim situation......the nonswimmers that have been promoted to positions of consequence over actual competent individuals can now slip beneath the waves. Enjoy the decline..you ain't stopping it!

I’d ordered more gluten something like 10-12 days ago through an amazon external vendor. Paid a high price for it. i got a tracking number. On the due date, nothing. Ran the tracking number through USPS - the order had never even been received by the PO! I emailed the vendor. No reply. Requested a refund. No reply. Tried to contact amazon. “We have no staff available to talk to you at the present time.” Bastards.

God has a plan, Trust it!
Our Walmart is not a SuperWalmart and is about 45 min from me. They have limited food anyway (canned goods, one refridge section of milk and basics). So not a place I would shop anyway other than for clothing, gadgets, electronics or housewares.

Yes, no? We had, and will continue to have the envy of the worlds economy . People will recover. People will climb out, not just roll over and die! The markets are rebounding quite well considering. You don’t see the entire World with foreclosed homes or w/o essentials do you?

The "markets" are an absolute farce. How many TRILLIONS have been pumped onto the markets by the central banks? The nominal value of stawks are coming along, but we are heading down the road of the Weimar republic.....it took wheelbarrows of Marks to buy goods, the merchants would throw the Marks aside and keep the wheelbarrow for payment. The death of money is a great read.... you and I get to live it!

Don't know if this has been mentioned but here goes. I think walmart is having problems restocking due to the way they pay their vendors. The cheap brands are mostly gone with the higher priced products taking their place. ie cheap $1 loaf of bread has been replaced by $3 bread.
I've known people over the years who produce something that they end up selling a good bit of. Wal-Mart decides to carry it, usually in a local store. Porch swings stick out in my mind but there are other handmade items I've heard of. To a person, they had trouble getting paid and sometimes had to threaten legal action to get their money months after the net 30 was due. They bully even their big name suppliers into selling some things to them at a loss. Those huge jars of Vlassic pickles for one. If I can only produce a limited amount of pickles because of a shortage of cucumbers, I'm selling to the smaller chain store that pays 20% more than WM.

Many businesses will not re-open ever. Many large businesses are even now starting the process of bankruptcy.
No matter what happens next the US economy has lost 1/4 of a year. That money is gone forever. And that is only if the economy snaps back instantly. Obviously it will not.
Car makers were in the dumps before this started. Ford had already been downgraded to junk before this started. Now there is a huge glut of cars and many people stopped paying for their leases. Plus large businesses even if they stay in business will not be replacing all their fleet vehicles. Car makers are going to all need a bailout.
Airlines already got a bailout. But know travel will certainly not bounce back. Will they get another bailout?
Oil is selling below cost. Do you really think all the oil companies can just absorb that loss?

The federal deficit will be at least $4 trillion this year (fiscal year ends in Sept). There will certainly be more business bailouts and almost for sure additional stimulus checks for individuals. That will mean another huge deficit next year.
The Federal Reserve has dropped rates to zero and they will raise them again for years if ever. The Fed balance sheet has gone up by $3 trillion already and they are far from done giving away free money.

Sorry but I think the USA is toast.

Cut to the chase and buy high gluten flour, like semolina.
Makes great bread, higher in protein, and minerals to boot.

I understand quite well, which is why I posted it on every one of your bread threads, back to the beginning. Sometimes repeatedly. And it has been available, without exception, throughout this entire episode in quantum ignorance.
Regardless of the current state of supply and demand, this vendor has not faltered.

Since I just bought a bag I do know. Flour $36. Shipping $21.
Total, just over $1 a lb on top shelf product. Delivered in 3 days.
And let me be clear: I did NOT want 50# of flour. I actually only wanted 20#.
Suit yourself.
I was trying to help.

I think you're right. There is no storage in the back of Walmart or any grocery store really to speak of. Not like the days of old. It will come back at some point due to normalcy bias. Local Grocery stores that were swamped a month ago are going back to minimal traffic now. They are starting to get more shelves filled up. I guess until the next panic starts in the fall. The summer is now the time to stock up more.

I know you were. My original goal was to get a lousy 25# of bread flour. Naturally, being novice as well as stubborn, I went about it “my way.” Whether that way is right or wrong is immaterial at this point. I’ve learned a lot from my little quest. I paid way too much and didn’t get the right types of ingredients. But even with the flour you recommend, I’d still only want a MAX of about 20#.

This does not apply to everything but keep it in mind when looking at shelves. A can of name brand green beans goes for 2x and store brand goes for x. Perhaps same company cans em both. The store brand is for over run product once premium stuff is done.

Why would they run store brand at a lower cost if they can sell all the name brand they are making?

I used to work in a frozen pizza factory. Red barron and tonys and digourno or whatever was just starting to be made. Made school pizzas as well. And I am probably forgetting some of the names of what all we made, this was 20 plus years ago.

The same pizza line making red barron would change into tony's pizza at some point. Yes there was different sauce and ingredients to some extent but those first tony's pizza were dang near a red barron pizza cause the new sauce was replacing the previous sauce and same with ingredients and stuffs.
thanks for that info.

The wife just returned from Walmart. Plenty of booze and chips but zero meat and absolutely zero frozen vegetables which is ok because that is whitey food. What is most concerning however is the absolute absence of sugar....it is physically impossible to make kool-aid without sugar...stand by to fix bayonets! Fortunately I live in the hinterlands and only the hummingbirds will be rioting in my neighborhood. The rest of y'all had best stand to!

A note on your Generac. We have a whole house Generac that is 10 years old, always serviced and barely used.
Just cost me 300 to have the battery and spark plugs replaced. I'm sure you know more than me about them but you may want to have some parts in stock just in case.

Interruptions to our delivery chain and all the manufacturing being done in China prompted me today to order 3 pairs of shoes! I'm not a fashionista, but rather someone who has profoundly flat, wide feet!

On a good day it's hard to find my size. So... I made certain to order some "duty" shoes for the job, and a very nice pair of supportive sandals.

What can't you live without?

May I ask where you get your shoes? I have collapsing arches and am on my feet all day. Looking for good, supportive shoes!

My big "lady" feet are 8.5 XXW. I have found that Men's Rockport Prowalkers 8 medium are my DREAM shoe for on your feet all day type of work.
Today I found them on shoes.com. (they had a 25% off code to use). I also search Amazon.

Listed for $74.95 but with the 25 % discount at checkout $56.22

I went to the local supermarket... first time in a store since... I dunno.April? But the granddaughters were coming, nd I didn't have time to make homemade fruit pops.

I was shocked to see almost the entire ice cream and frozen treat section looking like Vandals had been through. I haven't seen it that empty since their freezer cases dead 2 years ago! I was able to find a couple boxes of frozen "all fruit" treats (I try to not be the grandmother who totally corrupts healthy grandkids tastebuds!) But it took some looking...

Ice cream? Why?!

Went to a WM in the far burbs of MSP and actually found 4oz jars of baking yeast. Price was about $4 and change but now I can try baking bread per Dennis' recipe. On the other hand, I asked the Pepsi guy why I can't find Pepsi with real sugar. He says there is a can shortage due to aluminum supplies. So they are not making some products. Says the soup shortage might also be a can shortage deal. Any one have more information?

Cold house doesn't stop my bread making. I heat the Cabin with electric oil heaters (look like radiators) you can touch without burning your hand. I sit the bread bowl on top and cover with a damp towel and wait for the magic. You can also sit a bowl of dough on the warm part of your fridge or freezer top. It doesn't take much heat. Enjoy!
Good idea i didn't think of that. Thanks. I do have 2 of those heaters. I suppose i am to keep it on real low setting. Great idea!
