Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

We got up to no community water this morning!!! DS called them, since they are also without water about 2 miles away, and the pumps are down. I guess they finally froze up. Good thing I've got plenty of potable water in storage, or today would have been a disaster.

Only one broken pipe and it goes to the cabin. DH is going to cap it off.

We made it to church, but I had to leave early and wait in the truck. Excessive coughing and too distracting. We will go to my cousin's house but not really early. My coughing stopped when I got in the truck. Its all allergy.

Its 40 degrees outside right now, down to 28 much later. I forgot to bring my alovera plant in and it is seriously drooping.

We have barely a trickle of water now, but what we're getting has to be boiled before use, until further notice. I'm heating to boil water in stock pots on my stove, so I can wash up all the dirty dishes from our Christmas meal. I don't want to use our potable storage water to wash dishes in.

1,700 people in our community and part of a surrounding county under the boil water notice, and only a trickle of water at that. Some don't even have a trickle. The pumps didn't freeze. Somewhere, one or more water lines froze and busted. ATM, they still haven't found where it's at.

Thank you to all. While there were some really rough emotional spots today, my son had a good day and was able to communicate his needs. He was somewhat aware that he was being left out and ignored but enjoyed the time with the people who did spend time with him.

Our journey went well and we returned home happy and whole.

Beginning day 4 without water. But at least we know where the problem is. The pipe coming out of the pressure tank is metal and has to hook to PVC water lines. PVC to metal never works well--we have had trouble with this spot before. Have to wait now for a plumber to come out. Got a little more snow over night--just what we needed!! But we had a wonderful Christmas any way.

Hope you all have water soon.
Not sure what this week will bring prep wise. I can’t drive yet and am limited on lifting, etc. I could work on a meal plan which would use up some of what we have and save money.

On a side note, I did charge up my kindle and would like to get caught up on some reading. I got a two month free kindle unlimited trial so want to download some books there.

hmmmmm….

Doing the same, britches, just to clean out the pantry. Have not done much over the weekend....dinner with inlaws Saturday which SIL fixed and I am so grateful. Talked to everyone yesterday and had a quiet day with DH.

I'll hit the ground running in a bit when the coffee kicks in.

Reading sounds like a grand plan, briches! I originally got Kindle unlimited for myself, but daughter and the boys use it more than I do lately; they have to leave me at least 4 of the 10 books I can have out at a time. I'm not complaining; I know I'm blessed that they like to read.

I went nuts on the 23rd and made up 4 different 4 serving meals, so we have been heating and eating those - I may actually have to cook again sometime today so Hubby can have something to carry in his work lunch tomorrow..

Not sure what today will bring other than a possible trip to the pool, and probably a run to the store to pick up a prescription, chicken for the cats, and half & half. The temps rose overnight from below zero up to 19* degrees at this time; after today, the high temps will be in the mids 40's to mid 50's. If I do go to town, I'll have to keep my eyes open for kids trying out Christmas present bicycles - Walmart had tons in stock early in December but were down to just a few the last time I went there. Good to see kids still want bikes instead of the latest electronic gadget.

The feral shed cats are earning their keep today; they were in field edge across the road, and I saw them carrying mice back to the shed porch to chow down on - good kitties!! They get cooked chicken, canned cat food, and dry cat food, but still like to hunt, and i am grateful that they do.

Hubby had a cold start in last week, and I think that he passed it on to me - I was trying to avoid getting it, but may not have succeeded; noticed I'd been tired, and now the sniffles have started in. I'd stocked up on cold meds a couple of months or so back, so we are set. I foresee a nap in my near future...

Well, Hubby just walked back in the door - they'd cancelled non-emergent surgeries because of the weather on Friday and there weren't any emergency surgeries over the weekend, so his department didn't have anything they had to do today; and no one had called. I doubt he gets that lucky over the New Year's weekend though...

Take care all; stay safe this week!

YAY! We have water this morning, but no pressure, and we still are under a "boil water" notice. I've got 3 large stock pots on the stove, instead of using any more of our potable water in storage. We will definitely replenish our stock, plus more, when we go back to town.

Here we are in North Mississippi, and we are getting lots of snow this morning. Just missed having a snowfall on Christmas Day. Our low last night was 22, but it's supposed to warm up to 41, today, so the snow won't last long.

Cary and I had a wonderful, quiet Christmas Day, except for the drama of no water. It was the first time in 45 years we have had Christmas alone, just the two of us.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I can NOT wait for SPRING!!!!
I am going stir crazy in this weather!!

MUCH WARMER this year in the RV than last year.....have reflective bubble wrap on all windows except for small kitchen window and stuffed towels in the overhead heating vents. It was cold, but survivable. The past couple of days have been quite pleasant inside here.

I have sketched out my garden plans for this coming year read garden

articles, read Doomer Porn, read mysteries and novels, started back into my intensive BIBLE study....cooked, eaten, fed dogs, goats, rabbits, and the one chicken I have......I am BORED!!!!! I have LOTS of cleaning I NEED to do.....but I don't wanna do it!!

One of the things I did, was I baked bread several times this past week. I had run out of milk, so I used sour cream and a bit of water instead.....talk about DELICIOUS!!! it was like CAKE instead of bread!!

Guess I will try to take a nap.....????

We had a good Christmas...just the two of us...
We are still cold...about 33 or 34...at one in the afternoon....it went down to 11 last night..but better than the 6 we had....we do have water and have had it but the water problems...we have been hearing about here set us to thinking ...

.so we got up on Amazon..and started searching for things we use to keep the house warm and the keep the water flowing...we were at Lowes a few days ago and most everything was led...

So many light bulbs are now led....they don't put out the needed heat like the incandescent bulbs do...

For the well house..
found halogen incandescent interior floods for the well house..and the metal clip on flood light holders...for them for the well house...when we were at rural king in the fall we grabbed a couple of small ceramic heaters...

For under the house......
back up heat tape...metal drop light cords that have an extra plug ...so if it gets worse we can have 2 lights under the house..found 100 watt rough duty bulbs....most of the drop lights are now led....so the type that use incandescent bulbs are disappearing fast

For inside the house...
We got backup doorway fans to move the hot air away from the stove and to other rooms...and earlier ordered another pair of fireplace gloves from l.l.bean...a pair lasts for years...welding glove will work also.. we are also stocked up on firewood and continuing to do so..
We use 4 to 5 cords a year..have 8 in already with more to come..

For power ... We have the generator in it's shed with exhaust outside and backup fuel...for it and backup propane tanks for the grill and kitchen stove ..we can lock..and it is out of sight

we may consider some solar down the road...
what if we do have a minny ice age as some are saying?
After this storm glad we stocked up more...

The church we used to attend years ago was a rented historic building. The congregation finally was able to find a building to buy. It was needed as the rented one had mold issues and down stairs smelled like fuel oil. Several of the members were bothered by one or the other. A couple of families had quit attending most of the time. They came back after the congregation moved into the purchased building. Do you know what in the church you are allergic to. It may be bothering others too, just not as noticeable as coughing. Sometimes the problem can be found and taken care of. One of the member was allergic to the oil they were using to treat the wood on the pews. That was solved by using a different treatment. Hope you can find a solution.

I had such a lousy cough this morning that I didn't drink any coffee. And now I have a massive headache. so now I'm drink luke coffee, it doesn't have to be hot. My cough is not quite so violent as it has been off and on. I have some Clif expresso shots, i'm very stingy with them, because they are kind of pricey, but I do have a decent supply of them. My headache is minimizing, so maybe my cough will get better too.

DH has washed dishes (faint and fall in it) complaining all the way, it does make me feel guilty. Maybe he will learn something about the way he doesn't rinse things off and piles things up. I'm not holding my breath and I'm not saying anything to him because he helps me so much. What he has been doing in the pantry room gives me hope that it will get organized, so there is not way I'm going to critize him for anything.

My headache is easing up.

The sun is shinning and its about 45 outside and 76 inside.

It's the week between Christmas and New Years and there is never much going on so this is when I go through all of the pantries doing full rotation and check the woodpile to decide if I should top it off along with visiting family and if there's time I hit the lake to see if the water is hard enough to fish on.

Got the pantries done and while I'll be topping off the woodpile it's because I have a couple blowdowns out back that I should get cleaned up and starting to dry. Haven't checked the lake but since we're going to be back above freezing for 8 days I'm thinking I'll wait a couple weeks. I'm cautious and don't walk out there until I see people driving their trucks out to their shantys.

the old lightbulb improvisation should only be a temp emergency type hack - if that space requires heating even once a year >>> bite the bullet and buy an actual heater - the BTU output VS wattage used just doesn't compare - and you don't get a thermostat for an on/off energy savings possibility ....
Nice idea...would be wonderful to be able to use a heater under the house..but one size does not fit all.

There is no bitting the bullet..money is not the issue..this a very old house and it is not possible to put a heater in this space...nor would it be safe to so...it is also impossible to reroute that line inside the house as we have done with all the other exposed lines......

depending on the temperature of the night..heat tape and one or two bulbs do the job..as needed..... after 23 years in this house we have explored all the options and found what works for different temperature ranges..ie: teens, single digits and sub zero..

well house has a heater..with thermostat..and light bulbs... different combinations depending on the temperature of the day..or night

The point of my post was do to the changing times anyone who requires older style things should consider stocking up while things are still available..as they are being phased out rapidly...

We had a horrible ice storm here last January...and had no power from the power company for 8 days.... we had power, water and heat and a working stove in the kitchen..a non-electric gas...because we are prepared...other people had a terrible time of it....and some really suffered..and some were even without power longer than us. Some people now are really suffering and our heart breaks for them....

Came through the cold snap without any issues. Averaged about 8 pieces of wood in the stove per day to keep the house at 72 degrees...much better than the old boxwood stove we had years ago...and more controllable as well. Tripling the attic insulation made a big difference - as expected, but to this point only had ac usage to compare.

Heat lamps are great for directed heat where a heater won't work...our well pump is in a metal 14x20 shed, so a heater is not practical, whereas the heat lamp heats only where required...and draws 1/10 the power. Important if they are running off of solar power, and cheaper if not. We did pick up additional bulbs just in case, but they're not going to go bad sitting on a shelf. :)

Our well house is really very cool...most likely built in the 1920s ..but may be a bit older..when the new 30" bored well was put in...the original well is a hand dug 36" dates from the late 1800s and is a bricked well and is in the well house..the well house is a block building maybe 8x10..we have rebuilt the original pitched roof and insulated it..the breaker box for the well is in it...so we have electricity there and we are able to use an electric heater when needed and we use an interior flood ... for light and a little heat..when the weather is normal..we also have a thermometer in there so we can monitor the temperature and adjust the heater as needed..
We totally agree that bulbs and such are fine on the shelf..considering that most things are made in china..is seems prudent to have back-ups for the back-ups. .lol
The other well back up is a well bucket and sufficient rope for that....lol..we might be able to desilt the original well and use that again if push comes to shove. .
We had a bad drought some years back and most people here lost their shallow wells ...only three of us saved them..one down on the corner is a hand dug rocked well..a lot nicer to be shallow if you have to use a well bucket..

Just wanted to post an update. Finally, at the end of day 4 after 2 trips from the plumber and $800+ we have running water again. Plumber was out around noon, fixed one obvious problem, when the pump was turned back on it put pressure on another weak spot with another fountain of water. Plumber back out again but this time everything seems to be working fine. I was able to take a shower (instead of a spit bath) and run a load of laundry. Showers are underappreciated and under rated.

About 10:50 last night I was trying to get out of my chair but got tangled up in my covers, I slid right out of my chair. Didn't fall or hurt myself, but I had taken my sleeping medication and was groggy so I couldn't stay sitting up, I just kept falling up. Finally got Dh up and he was trying to help me get up but I kept falling over. I thought it was funny but DH did not. So we had to call 911 to get me off the floor. I think they were pretty quick for a non emergency call, the got there within 30 minutes. They got me right up and back into my wonderful lift chair, which is where I sleep.

I didn't sleep very well but here I am walking around just fine, feeling blessed. DH still doesn't think my falling over was funny. I do wish that I was able to get myself off the floor, it seems like I just have no strength to do anything and ache all over.

We now have plenty of water, but I'm still having to boil it for potable water. I have no idea when the "boil water" notice will be lifted. Water samples will have to be sent to Jackson to be tested. I think they test 3 different times, before they issue the "all clear".

Our old house was built in the early 1930's. When it was built, there was a dug well about 30ft. deep, and later they added a well pump to get the water to the house. Over time, the well caved in. When it caved in, the shed over the top of it fell in on top of it going down into the well. By that time, community water had been put in, so they never bothered making the well usable again. To date, we have not found a single person who will come out and clean it out, so we can use it. It's too deep, and Cary is not able to try it himself. I wouldn't let him even if he wanted to. We could have a new well bored, but at the cost of $5000 just to start. At our age, it's just not worth it. That leaves us dependent on community water or using our rain catchment system water tank and barrels, plus plenty of potable water in storage to do for several weeks.

We are pretty much the same here well wise. A few years ago DH tried in several places to drive a well, but he just could not find the right spot. So we gave up and he bought 12 of those ICB totes. The lowest temperature we got to was 11 degrees so not cold enough long enough to damage the totes. Last night our temperature got to 24 but its up to 50 today and getting warmer starting tomorrow. The sun is starting to some out behind the clouds. Then rain again. All the goats and the dog made it through the freezing weather at night. Yesterday DH only got 5 eggs which for us is not much. Maybe the birds are on strike.

My mother told me that my great grandparents never could get a good well back here.

Today DH is on his way to get feed. By now he can manage the 50# feed sacks as long as he's careful and he says he is always careful.

So glad you have water again, SouthernBreeze, but it would sure be a royal pain to have to boil everything. I "witched" the location of our current well back in the 70's and we hit an underground spring with wonderful water. We are so blessed.

Boiling the water isn't so bad. It's really better and easier than having to filter everything through the big berkey.

Everyone around us has had, some still do, a well. They are all about 30ft. deep. There are wet weather water springs all over the place, too, but none on our property. Finding a place for a well on our property would be easy to do, it's just that there isn't anyone around close to do it, thus the expense. There is a company, or used to be, about 60 miles south of us. They are the ones who gave us the price quote. I so wish we had a well spring and shed!

I got up around 0330 to take some (more) cold medication - so glad I stocked up in the fall!! I read for a bit before the med put me to sleep for an hour or so; then got up once it was light enough to see outside to take care of the outside cats and fill the bird feeders. I'm already ready to go back to bed  I had been trying to drum up enough enthusiasm to go to the Evil Empire for fresh boneless/skinless chicken thighs today but then realized:

(1) Yeah, no - the energy thing just isn't happening.
and
(2) The stores will likely be way too people-y for my cold induced low tolerance level today anyway.

I do have a couple of prescriptions that are ready for pick up, but will plead my cold and the bad roads last week. I have enough meds to get me through for a while anyway. Cat food was on my list, but it's to replace stock, not an absolute 'must have now' item since I do have some stored. Rural King has been out of the one flavor of food that my indoor cats like best; really don't want to go to Pet Smart, but don't want to let my stock get below 5 cases either, and it's getting close. To stretch it out, I've canned 35 quart jars of chicken thighs - canned to human standards - over the past few weeks, with a plan to use them for the cats unless there is an emergency. I may end up opening one today as I just can't find the energy to drag myself out to the store to pick up more fresh chicken - the rotten cold Hubby brought home to me is kicking my butt. The stores will likely be crowded with folks spending their monetary Christmas gifts, or returning items, so I really shouldn't be out and about sharing my cold germs anyway.

Speaking of chicken, I must say that the canning warmed the house up nicely though.... Maybe I'll pick up some roasts at the store next  Hmmm - just checked their on-line ad and that's a nope for this week - the sale meats are mostly things you'd buy for New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, and I've already got a corned beef brisket in the freezer. I'll check the other store ad when it comes in the mail today to see if they have anything I might want to can up.

I'm trying to work out what I want to do the rest of the week - the temp is up to 16*F, and is supposed to get up to 29*F today; tomorrow the temp is supposed to get up to 45*F = mud city Trying to decide if I want to try to go to the pool Thursday and/or Friday or not; figured I should probably let the cold run it's course for at least another day or so before I'm out and about too much.

There is rain in the forecast for Thursday; I'll see if I can't catch enough from one of the gutters once the roof has been washed clean to refill my 5 gallon canning water jug - there is enough left in it for a couple more canning sessions, but I'll need to refill it soon. Hubby only filled one 5 gallon jug before he drained the rain water tank for the winter - I can usually count on a few good rains during the winter instead of all snow and ice, so it will probably be enough unless I go hog wild with the meat canning.

Well, I'm guessing the cold med wore off and I have a temp again; started feeling cold and shivering so I'm going to go crawl under my nice warm heated throw and see if a nap helps it any.

Take care all; stay safe out there!!

I have a doctor's apt. this afternoon to have my BP checked again. I've been taking the 50mg of Losartan/daily for 4 weeks, and it's not working. I've gone to a more natural diet and eating plenty of garlic, but nothing has worked. I'm sticking with my diet, even if it's not working for my BP, because I think I'm getting other benefits from it.

I'm still boiling water, but I think the "notice" is supposed to be lifted sometime today. We have community water alert apps on our phones and will be notified when it's lifted.

After going through this "Deep Freeze", I can't think of anything that we could have done differently. Not our fault that the community water froze up, and we had plenty of potable water in storage. We used some out of storage but didn't want to use up all we had stored. Having to boil the water was a pain, but in a SHTF event, we are prepared to have to do that anyway. We never lost power but were prepared for that, too. Our house stayed good and toasty warm. Now, I'm ready for Spring! That was enough cold temps for me. We're looking forward to mid-February, so we can start our spring gardens. That's if we have our normal temps in mid to late February.

SB......have you tried BEETS for your BP???

I understand most people don't care for them, but I have several friends who have used beets to get their BP under control. Two of the folks were severe diabetics who also had bad BP issues. If you don't like beets, perhaps you could try them pickled, or make Harvard Beets, which is delicious......just a thought for you.

Well I'm not especially looking forward to spring because that means the heat of the summer is right after that. But really, I'm just taking it as it comes. I don't live in a cold weather climate but we do have winter here. I have cold weather clothing, some of which I've never even worn. I've got my flannel lined night gowns and pjs, which some years I never wear because it has to be cold to sleep in them. Tonight I'll probably have to wear my regular nightgown because it will be much warmer.

One couple on Wednesday night church has been bringing food, but the next couple of weeks they are taking a break. So DH has the bright idea of our bringing food. I really do think its just too much for one couple to do it all the time but it was their idea. At another church they take turns, which is, to me, more fair. I have a full panty so I don't have to go buy anything. God is good all the time.

I hate beets! I bought a bag of those beet gummies and tried them. They didn't help, either. I've tried just about everything that is natural for lowering BP, but nothing I've done has helped. Not even the 50mg of Losartan. I don't know what else to do, except let my doctor figure it all out. High BP runs in my dad's side of the family, and I may have just inherited it. All my uncles and one aunt on his side had high BP and died of heart attacks. Dad had high BP and heart disease, but he didn't die from it.

I'm all for trying natural treatments first. If that doesn't work, I'm willing to give RX med's a try, within reason. In my case, I feel I don't have much of a choice, after everything I've done to get it down, naturally.
