Went to town yesterday and filled in what I hope are the last holes in the pantry for awhile. Finished Christmas on Amazon. Wrestled stove pipe today. Got it put together. DH got on roof and soon agreed with me that neither of us have any business being up there. Roof part of new stove pipe is done. Hope to finish actual connection to stove after dinner tomorrow.

Christmas dinner in the morning at the nursing home. We are already sore so tomorrow will be interesting. Hospital called to report FIL ready for discharge. Couldn't do so because he got agitated and combative and they had to Haldol him. NH won't accept him back until he is 24 hrs past Haldol dose. I remember when local nursing homes Haldol everyone and residents would be slumped in their chairs up and down the halls.

I think we are ready for the Thur nite below zero temps. Gonna finish the final organizing on pantry while it is too cold to go out. Groc store yesterday was a madhouse. Saw a couple ladies freaking out over $5 cost of stick butter and eggs.

Christmas Eve with family is Finger foods at DD's. Easy on everyone. Final chance to see the grand that's headed into Army.

Praying everyone has a blessed week.

With our temps only in single digits for overnight lows and highs only in the teens through the weekend, with wind chills well below zero, Cary got everything battened down outside, so this morning, I'm washing all the laundry, and cooking meals in case our community water freezes up. It won't do any good to keep our lines unfrozen if the community lines freeze. The last time it got as cold as in our forecast, they did just that. We were out of water for a week. We have plenty of water in storage but will only use it if we have to. Cary is also bringing in extra firewood for the cook stove. We may need to keep it going along with the wood heater just to keep the house toasty.

We've never had too much trouble with mice. We keep mouse traps and poison out all over the house which mice never have bothered. We do it as a just in case. Well, 4 days ago, a mouse ran across the floor! Next day, found a dead one in the floor in the laundry room! I told Cary, then, that this cold front was going to be a really bad one for us, cause mice were coming in the house. Sure enough, for the past 4 days, we've had dead mice. I've gone through the pantry and all other locations of food storage with a "fine tooth comb", and I didn't find any signs, so we were getting them down in the laundry room, only, but Cary has put more traps and poison out all over the house. Dog friendly locations. I said all that to say this. I was taught all my life to watch signs in nature, signs in the sky, and animals when it comes to predicting weather. It does work.

DH said that it might be possible to mound more dirt over your water lines....know it won't help if the community water freezes but in the future may keep your lines from freezing...it would be a project...not something that you could do quickly.....but if they are correct about the solar minimum...and continuing cold winters..it might be worth considering...

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
Prepping for this weather coming in!!
The RV is already COLD.....and with temps predicted to be below ZERO, I am creating a TENT inside the RV.
THIS SHOULD work pretty well......already having DAN-DAN and the OATIE GOATIE sleeping under the covers with me!!

OK, so you think I am gross!!! Don't really give a rip!! It will help us ALL survive!! I have Oatie (Bubba Goat) in a cloth diaper, with a plastic pants on him.....plus, I put his bottom half inside one of my felt planting bags. Thus far, and we have been doing this for a couple of weeks, he has not done ANYTHING in his diaper AT ALL!! What a SMART OATIE GOAT!!
Personally, I prefer Oatie in my bed than some of the human males I have met!! Oatie and I OBVIOUSLY HAVE A PURELY PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP!!!!

We have enough propane to get us through till the first....and I get my SS on the 3rd.

TODAY ......I have to get the BIG dogs inside the old house, so they won't freeze to death, and refill all my water jugs. Then disconnect ALL the plumbing and drain all the pipes. Going to be a FUN DAY!!

Also have an electric blanket for as long as we have power.....this is going to be one HECK OF A WEEKEND!!

It would be a huge project, since our water meter is a long way from our house. We just keep the water in the bathroom faucet dripping, and the cabinets open. The bathroom faucet dripping keeps the water pulled throughout the rest of the house. We've only had one thing that has ever frozen and burst, and that was the outdoor water spigot. Cary has that wrapped and covered good now with extra insulation.

Did you get your carbon monoxide detector working?

Also, you may find you don't need to make the baby wear diapers... when we had the tiny (14#) preemie calf in the house for her first month of life, she housebroke in about three days. When I discovered that the only place she was peeing/pooping was on the fleece blankets I had down for her bed in our office, I replaced them with puppy pee pads. Never did have to clean up after her!

Are you going to castrate him? It sounds like he'll make a heck of a pet and companion, although if he's not a dwarf, you're going to have space problems in a few months! Banding him would be easy, and the younger the better!

One of my 1st cousins was a game warden (he's passed now), but he had two small sons at the time. A mama deer and a very small (still with spots) baby were in the road, and she got run over and killed right in front of their house. He went out and rescued the baby. Brought it in the house. His 2 boys bottle fed it, and it was raised in the house with them, and even slept with them, too. They gave her a bath on a regular basis in their bathtub. That deer was spoiled rotten! She wore a "hunter orange" collar to let everyone know she was a pet.

eta. As she grew, she came and went inside their house as she pleased just as if she were a dog or cat. One day, she went missing. Days passed into months, and they all thought she had been killed by a hunter. Then, after months had passed, she showed back up at their door with her two small babies with her. Ain't that so sweet?

Hope all is going well with your recovery, briches!!

I ended up having to make a run to pick up a present daughter had ordered yesterday - 4 hours round trip; ugh! Luckily, the traffic wasn't bad; I took country roads to a rural interstate, and stayed on it most of the way - and the place she wanted me to go was right off the interstate. I took advantage of being out and about and hit an Aldi in a town about half way home - they were packed, and the shelves were looking pretty thin. They had two checkouts open and the guy in front of me was sort of complaining about it; the checker said "Yeah, we had two people quit with no notice, so we only have two checkers and one stocke; one of us is going to have to go help the stocker." I thanked him for being there. I was excited to find two more bags each of the two winter coffee blends I like, so that will carry me a while; and the Bavarian soft pretzel sticks were back in stock; so I picked up 3 boxes of those to put in the freezer so I'm a happy camper.

They've pushed the start of the winter storm off until noon on Thursday; I was going to head to town today as soon as the canner of chicken I just put on the stove is done, but may wait until early tomorrow morning - if I go at all. Waiting for a text back from Hubby to see if he'll stop and pick up wild bird food for me; don't really need anything else.

My cookie connection dropped off the rest of the goodies I'd ordered at my co-worker Buddy's house - she's much more energetic than me, she does cut out sugar cookies and decorates them so pretty; me, I just use the round cookie cutter, ice 'em white, and tell the kids they are snow balls

Called the doc's office to get a refill on a script; they have cancelled all of the Friday appointments due to the weather forecast; ditto elective surgeries at the surgery center at the hospital where we work. I was encouraging Hubby to stay at his Mama's house Thursday night so he could hopefully get to work Friday; he didn't really want to, but it looks like he might not be able to make it home Thursday after work anyway. Sure as heck wouldn't hurt him to stay there with his Mama during a storm anyway, in case her power goes out. I've got an alternate heat source here, plus can drain the lines and take the buggy to the cousins hunting cabin where there is a woodstove if I have to - even in blizzard conditions, the treeline gives a bit of an area where the snow is less so the buggy doesn't have a problem getting through.

The hospital where we both work is a 'Warming Station'; where people can go if no heat/no power, have medical equipment that requires power, or get stuck out on the interstate and the snowplows call the PD to meet 'em at the interstate exit and bring them to us. There have been more than a few times that I've ended up staying over at work during a storm; I keep a sleeping bag in the van for emergencies anyway, and it has come in handy for those times - beats the heck out of the blanket on the floor in a corner I got the first time I had to stay over during a winter storm

DH is finishing up getting the farm, etc. ready for the incoming cold blast. Anti-freeze has been checked and topped off, lightbulb in well house checked, water hoses drained, new plastic put on the windows in the henhouse to keep out drafts as much as possible with winds we’ll be getting. He‘s planning on moving the hay rings to a more sheltered place from the winds for the cattle today.

I‘ve been getting some things caught up inside since I have this week and next off from babysitting. With DH helping the double ovens are now “cleanish” LOL, I’ll try and do a better job next month. Oldest DD will be picking up the grandkids and bringing them over to bake cookies while their mom wraps gifts. Hopefully now the smoke detector won’t be going off every time the doors are open.

I just mashed up enough banana and froze for two loaves of banana bread. Trying to really cut down on any waste and cut down on expenses. Planning on making yogurt tomorrow, the price is getting ridiculous and I know exactly what’s in mine. Oldest grandson loves yogurt and eats at least 2 and sometimes 3 at a time, it adds up.

To those speaking of mice, youngest DD has been having trouble with mice lately and the other night one ran across the floor and little granddaughter (who is scared of them like me) screamed and started yelling “die it mommy, die it”! LOL!

Prayers for all especially briches and moldy!

DH is really helping me with pantry organization, although we have a long way to go. We are shooting for two hours a day.

He has now decided that the cabin is a good place to store food in jars that either don't require vacuum sealing or they are vacuum sealed. I have a ton of stuff that is either in bags or boxes that really need to be repackaged. Its a good thing I have a good supply of canning jars.

I just said to him that if he'd been helping me all along we wouldn't have the mess, he muddered something under his breath. LOL. He's been opposed to storing food which is why he wouldn't really help. he's a good motivator for me. God bless him.

We've has some issues with mice, big fat ones, but he has live traps in several places.

I've been busy doing little things lately. Winn Dixie had sugar on sale, so I got 4 more bags. A visit to Dollar Tree gave me a variety of little things, but I was excited about the 4 oz bags of Harry & David coffee. Bought 4 with barter in mind, but we will use it if not needed in the next 9 months or so.
..
A new Liquidation Center opened really close to us. I noticed it last week and stopped in today. Mainly clothes (little food), but you have to dig through the bins, like a treasure hunt :) I kept digging and found a pair of black jeans for me, 2 pairs of jeans for granddaughters to grow into, a 2 pack of dishtowels, an oven mitt, a 2 pack of pillowcases, and a polartec fleece hat. Everything was $1 and all of it was new. Everything is waiting to go into the washer. I thought it was a pretty good deal and kind of fun since I had the time and wasn't looking for anything specific.

Christmas presents are wrapped and ready to go. I have two loaves of pumpkin bread in the oven right now. We are ready for our cold spell. North central Florida, predicted to get down to 22 on Friday night. I've seen it get to 14 twice, but it has been a while since it has gotten to even 22.

Oatie Goatie (Bubba) is a small Nigerian Dwarf so he will be tiny to begin with. He is VERY SMART and understands simple commands....like "come here" "NO" "move" and "stop." He is quite sweet and I care a great deal for him!! I think I will band him and keep him as a pet. I have never done that to a goat, so I will start researching it.

The carbon monoxide alarm apparently does not work....does not light up when battery is in, do sample alert...nothing. I spent the last bit of my money on propane, so will have to wait until the 3rd, when I get my SS deposited. I think you are quite right though, as I noticed the headaches come Everytime we get near the end of a tank, or when I am changing the tanks!! I have made a small hole near the window by the bed and find that has helped quite a bit. It actually seems to be the heater leaking, it is a BIG BUDDY heater. I need to check out the maintenance stuff on the internet and see if I can

Please do keep that ventilation opening OPEN, no matter how cold it gets! You had ALL the symptoms of CO poisoning, and that's nothing to ignore! I was seriously concerned you could die in your sleep... one symptom is mental confusion and lethargy which often prevents victims from saving themselves.

Yeah, I know......after you said that, I realized I was also rather dull, mentally. I am being VERY CAREFUL now because I don't want to damage myself any more than I already have!! Plus, the babies can be easily overcome!!

We took a day off and went to the A to Z store at Alma. I was really dreading the crowds. It is always packed this time of year. But it was less crowded than I have ever seen it. I got through the isles very fast because of so few shoppers. Hubby said the hardware section was the same way. We spent very little. I got a few small gifts.

The cold will get here today. I moved the rest of the roosters into the hen house last night. It is going to be to cold for the tarp covered pen. I will move them back next week and just leave the 2 for breeding in with the girls.

I still have 20-30 bales of hay to sell. But I am tired of dealing with it. I will wait and see if any of my customers contact me for more.

We got our Rural Wave internet Tuesday. It is blazing fast. Now we have to work on changing over our email to a different email provider. We have been using the one provided by Hughes net. When we turn it off we have to have our stuff we need changed over.

I'm probably going to be in a dither today, so if I say something off the wall, repeat myself, or sound cranky; somebody send me a pm and tell me to hush up

Daughter and boys will be on their way home from Louisiana sometime today, and will be driving into our winter storm -> blowing snow that will make the roads slick, 30+ degree temperature drop to -8, with wind chills down to -30. At least they'll have their suitcases in the vehicle, so they can layer clothes if they have problems. I hope she has sense enough to find a place to stay and wait out the storm. I won't be able to sleep unless I know they are home or somewhere else safe, so I'm going to have to find some things to do to keep myself occupied.

Hubby hauled the emergency propane heater upstairs last night and hooked it up; I wrote down the steps for operating it, so if the power goes off, I'll be fine (yes, there is a carbon monoxide detector). I - again - strongly urged Hubby to stay in town at his Mama's if the weather looks bad; told him it wasn't so much so that he could get to work, it was to make sure his 93 year old Mama was safe - he got it then. His brother-in-law is a good man, and very competent; but he also has Hubby's sister to take care of, and our niece and her son and hubby to check on, so he can step up for his Mama. If he does have to stay in town, I already warned him that they might pull him out of his department to plow snow in the parking areas, or try to con him into going out to pick up weather-bound employees. The hospital has already called to cancel outpatient surgeries for this afternoon; and non-emergent surgeries for tomorrow

My van is parked facing out of the driveway, and against the projected wind - I don't really need anything but I'll run in to town before the storm to hit the bank and top off the gas tank. Once home, I'm going to go out to refill the bird feeders and put the chunk of pool noodle over the outside faucet. Only other things I'm likely do is fill the bathtubs with water to flush the toilets, and drag up a couple of boxes of empty half gallon jars and fill them with drinking water; I'll leave the bottled water at the store for those who need it. I'm trying to leave myself with some things to do until the storm gets closer as I'll need to burn up some nervous energy. It's supposed to be a short storm but I know I won't sleep until I know daughter and the grandsons are safely home, or safely somewhere at least!

The grandsons have used up 8 of the 10 books I can download on my kindle unlimited for the trip (not EVEN gonna complain about kids who like to read, no sir, no way!!), but I have plenty of others downstairs that I can read again. If all else fails, I'll drag out the box of the grandson's outgrown clothes that aren't fit to donate and cut them up for Hubby and the cousins to use for rags in the shop. I'm pretty sure there is a storage tub of not fit to wear t-shirts that I can cut into strips and roll into balls; I use them to crochet rugs or pot-holders. And if all else fails, I guess I could deep clean the house. It's supposed to be a short storm - maybe 12 hours, and only a few inches of snow; it's the wind and cold temps that will be the issue.

Well, the bank will be open in 10 minutes, so that gives me just enough time to get ready and head to town. Take care all; stay safe out there!!

I'm finishing off all the laundry this morning. I didn't get it all done, yesterday. Will fill the bathtub this afternoon for flushing the toilet if the community water freezes up. We have weeks' worth of bottled water already in the house ready to go. Unless we think of something else, we are as prepared as we can be for this deep freeze. I posted in Dennis' thread, yesterday, about all the measures we have taken.

Our high today is almost what it is right now at 9 am, 50 degrees. Temps will be dropping fast all day down to 2 degrees tonight with the wind chill at -20!!!! 18 for the high tomorrow. It snowed a bit last night as Cary and Frisco were on their nightly perimeter walk. Rain this morning, which is predicted to turn to snow. I don't think we'll have much, if any, accumulation.

Now, we wait.......

Last night at church one of the ladies complained that her 18 year old daughter had used up all of her medical tape and used scotch tape to hold a bandage on her leg. I asked her if she kept a supply of the tape and she said yes, but the daughter had used it all. The Wednesday night church folks are all excited about the new Dollar General that is close by.

Then again my idea of a supply of something is not what normies idea is. I have back ups of back ups, but then I'm not normal.

The Wednesday night church folks are the salt of the earth and I love them. I am thinking about leaving the contents of my house and all the out buildings to the church people when we die. The land goes to my niece. I don't dwell on this but my brother was going to take care of things and he died.

DH and I are making a tiny dent on organizing the pantry, but we are working on it every day. So much to day and without help I would never get it done.

The temperature at 4:00 pm will be 41 and at 11:00 pm it will be 21 and falling. Last night I finally got DH to put on a robe and he has it on over his clothes this morning. I have another one that I don't like quite as well because its a pull over and drags the floor, but what ever, he needs to wear a robe. I put on my very cold weather night gown last night, satin lined with flannel and a pair of long underware bottoms. so I was nice and warm.

Oo vey. Wasn't expecting to work today but boss got hit with a surprise last night.

Up early this morning. Feed bags full of mulch to block the gaps in the foundation and to cover the outside faucets, which are supposedly the freeze proof ones. I'm not taking the risk. The wind chill is the worrisome part and the bags will block the wind. Unfortunately, I don't have enough to build a complete barrier around the porch. Or even a partial. I may see if I can get to Lowe's for pine bales before it starts to get dark.

Extra layers of leaves over the strawberrys and other plants. I'm going to pull in the ones still in the tray.

Judy, I'm allergic to medical tape, so for myself, I use duct tape over bandages. I can't believe she got scotch tape to stick!
Our weather isn't supposed to be nearly as bad as most of y'alls. Single digit temps starting tomorrow night for 3 nights.
It was just supposed to rain all day today but this morning we had winter mix and it was COLD. I stayed out too long on my first round of chores and my hands are going to let me know it tonight. I got all my chores done and gave the livestock their lunch early, then I had a nice hot bath. I was soaked when I came in, it rained right thru my raincoat. I tried to wait for a lull but every time I went out it started pouring again.
I was supposed to have a couple of cans of beef stew that I heat up and give to my neighbor's chickens when it's so cold, but hubs must have eaten it and not told me (He doesn't like it and knows it's for the birds) All I have to offer them is a couple cans of cat food -- I hope that will give them enough calories to stay warm all night.
Hope everyone manages the nasty weather ok!

Daughter saw the forcast, said "Nope!" and hauled butt for home; got there safely late last night, so my biggest worry has been taken care of. The Grand-dog has been taken home, the faucet is covered, I found gallon jugs to use instead of half gallon, and my tub is full. I stopped at Dollar General to get money holder Christmas cards for the grandkids, and the bank for the money to put in them.

Since I was in town, I stopped by the small local grocery store and picked up a fish dinner - I didn't want to risk going up to the town where the VFW is. I squirted some Chik Fil A sauce on my fish; then added a little to the macaroni salad that came with my dinner as it was pretty bland; think I might use some Chik Fil A sauce in my homemade macaroni salad from now on - it was pretty good!

Freezing rain hit as I was almost home; windows are iced over on the van, and there is some very light snow blowing around. Wind is gusting pretty good out of the north, north west. Temp dropped from 34*F to 17*F. I am warm, dry, and safe; and offering up a prayer for those who are not as fortunate.

I love that stuff. DD is allergic to any adhesive product

We love it, too. The nurses always use it after a blood draw to hold the cotton ball in place. I had the bright idea of buying up lots of it to use instead of medical tape or any other kind of tape to secure bandages. It holds any kind of bandage securely in place, and it doesn't stick to skin or hair.

Ask the nurse for the tourniquet too - they throw them away (at least where I work) and they are great for opening jars

Vet wrap is the pretty much the same thing as the self adhering bandage wrap, and is wider.

I have saved so many of those rubber tourniquets over the years, that I have a drawer full, Renee, LOL. All I had to do was ask the nurse, once she was finished with my blood draw.

Oh thank you for that tip. Jars are always driving me nuts.

Done work for the day. Have some phone calls to make. And then just normal chores. I might make a run out in the morning, if the roads are safe. But I don't need to. And that right there is a joyful thing.

I will actually have two full days of rest before the big family shebang. And that is likely to help a lot with stress levels for me.

And I am definitely praying that those in worse situations have places to be warm and safe at.

Well, here it comes!!
It is snowing, but since the temperature is not freezing, the flakes melt before they even hit the ground. But there are great big flakes hitting the window!

Got everything done that had to be done......BIG DOGS in the old house.....warmer there than the garage or elsewhere. And of course, BAILEY, my FREEDOM GIRL ran out after I had her in and would not come back. She is actually the only one with ANY SENSE, so I got the leash and dragged her back in....she does NOT like to be penned or contained in ANY WAY!!!

The snow is starting to stick on the trees and grass.....and it is turning to slush on the road......gonna have a layer of ice underneath any snow that falls....that is the WORST situation, because people don't see the ice, so they drive like MANIACS.

Well......hope we all make it through this nasty weather......it is gonna last about a week, but the first two days are supposed to be the worst.

Prayers for all and pray ALL are safe and WARM!!

My niece went shopping yesterday at our local Acme. She said they were out of some things on my list. We shop normally at Aldi’s because they are less expensive.
I do enjoy Acme’s prepared meals ( not frozen) in their deli. I usually get two meals from each container.
She brought me the following from my list:

One head of lettuce
Chap stick
Miracle Whip light
2 of their prepared deli meat main dishes ( one was larger than the other ( enough for five meals) I only need to add a salad and some type of a canned vegetable .
2 containers of ice cream
1 larger container of potato salad
1 small coleslaw

Drum roll ! $70.00 for 9 items .
Sticking to Aldi’s

Praying for all...to be safe and warm and with their loved ones..

We had rain rain rain and rain...no snow just rain...and now mud...

We set up high on a low ridge here ..in the foothills...so we are fine..the area is under flood warning, flood watch, the creeks were already high this afternoon...wind warning for 50 mph gusts...wind chill warning ....I think that is all..

we are now headed down to 5 degrees tomorrow night...hope that is all they keep dropping the forecast.....so will do a few more things to keep water from freezing..the firewood is covered with tarps and weighted down with logs.. and it has stayed dry..and dh will be home for the worst days.... kitchen stove is non electric propane so we are good there...have a generator.. that can bring water up from the well

The barn cats have discovered the covered firewood piles...they are hanging out under the tarps dry as can be and cozy out of the wind..and cuddled together..dh got a couple of dirty looks when lifted the tarp to get some wood..as soon as he finished they settled back in...it will be warmer there than in the barn...

We have finished all the errands..dh goes to work tomorrow but will leave early before the big temperature drop.
Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your loved ones

We made it last night without our water freezing! I've still got it dripping in the bathroom sink, cause we're not getting above 18, today, and wind chill of -8. The wood heater is going, and Cary built a fire in the wood stove in the laundry room. So, our house is good and toasty warm.

I'll start cooking on our Christmas meal, today. Even if it's only going to be us two, I still plan on making a nice meal for us. I already have everything I need to make it all from last week's shopping. I'm going to boil the chicken to make the dressing with and cook the pumpkin pie. I still have a pecan pie to make, but will do that tomorrow, along with the dressing. Everything else can wait, until Christmas morning, since there is no certain time that we have to eat. No fuss, no mess to worry about, and no stress.
