I didn't want to, but I made myself go to Walmart after dinner. I picked up bulk unsalted almonds, cat litter (my brand was in -- should be enough to last until spring), sale coffee, plus a few odds and ends.

Unless something happens, this is my last "major" shopping trip for awhile. I'll be getting weekly groceries, but small bags of fresh veggies, eggs, and so on. It's been a hard last 3 weeks. I greatly dislike shopping, but I felt that if I didn't get the pantry restocked now, I'd be fighting limits and masks later.

I still don't have the snow boots I want, but I can't get those for awhile, yet. Fortunately, I shouldn't need them until December.

We decided to do our shopping today, since the weather is so nice. Sunny and low 80, today.

I ordered more books, yesterday. Our library is surely growing! We want to have lots of books on hand, and we already have stopped watching tv other than our local news. We already have hundreds of books on hand, but one can never have too many.

My shopping list, today, is a huge one. I don't know when/if we'll get to make another run, so I'm shopping as if it might be awhile, before we get to go again. Not only will it be my 2 weeks worth, I'm stocking my pantry with more foods/items that we use on a regular basis. I don't have much room in my freezers, so my fresh meat buying will be limited. We've decided it's best we avoid people as much as we can. MS is getting over 1,500 new C cases a day now. Our local medical center is on lockdown, again."Sigh".

I checked all my orders this morning, and they have shipped, already. I'll be watching for those starting, tomorrow. Hopefully, this time there won't be any screw ups.

Question that isn't related to prepping, but didn't want to get laughed at( by an admin) again by asking it on main. Is anyone else having a problem with their "spell check"? Mine hasn't worked in over a month. Is it a function of the forum, or a PC problem?

No, one can never have too many books! My possible "lock down" project is a built in bookcase for my home office. It won't be fancy but it will allow me to keep more than the 300 or so books that I have now (I downsized from over 1,000 when I moved). Right now, I just have 3 folding shelves and my most important works, mostly reference.

Mine seems browser-dependent. When I'm on Firefox, it doesn't work but it does (sort-of) work on Chrome, and that's "everywhere."

I'm tired a lot right now and having to communicate with several folks in French and Romanian, so sometimes I "lose" my English and my spelling goes south, not that it was ever that great in the first place!

**Added: a hard copy dictionary, plus any foreign language dictionaries (if you need them) are very valuable! I also have paperback medical and law dictionaries, that I buy at library book sales (new they can run $90+ . . . I pay $3 - $5, usually. A little bit older is fine. The basic vocabulary doesn't change.)

I admit to looking up words I don't know online but if the net goes down and I have to read through a legal contract or understand a medical report, those dictionaries are a lifesaver!

I agree. Cary built a wall bookcase along one of our living room walls. Floor to ceiling. Plus, we have bookcases in our bedroom. If we run out of room, we'll store them in boxes, but we've got a ways to go, before that happens. I'm trying to get him to build another bookcase. That may be a project for him this coming winter. We have all kinds of books, too. Pleasure reading, references, how to's, gardening, survival, homesteading, plant identification, herbs, medical, home remedies, spiritual, etc.....

Thanks, Meemur. I'm using Edge for my browser. Cary uses the same, but he has "spell check". I was just wondering. It's no big deal.

We are on vacation this week, but have a few projects to get done.

The chicken coop is progressing, I have a new thread on that one.

We picked up a meat slicer, but need to get a pair of non-cut gloves so we don't lose our fingers.

The AC guys are coming by this week as our upstairs unit is giving up the ghost after 15+ years.

Expensive week. I need to stop taking vacations.

I have a 40 yr. old chest freezer. A 20 yr. old AC. A 20 yr. old hot water heater. I can't get Cary to understand that we don't need to wait, until they just quit, before replacing them. Might not be available or affordable in the future. He won't budge.

Yeah we are getting the ac pumped with some freon, but they are going to give me a quote on a new unit. I am expecting long lead times.

On the one hand, I understand Cary's point of view: get every last hour of service out of those units! On the other hand, I can see being sick with COVID and having the hot water heater go out. Who is going to feel like boiling water on the stove?

Here's a compromise: buy a new hot water heater and store it, if you have room. That way, when the old one goes out, the new unit is on the property, but every last hour gets used from the old unit.

No great ideas on the chest freezer, but my Plan B is to rent space in a meat locker if I have a split hind of beef, lose my freezer, and can't fix it or get a replacement right away.

Right now I have 3 two foot stacks of books that I bought this year that I have to make a place for. Most of those books are non fiction, history and literature books that are several years old. Then I have classic literature and what I call pulp fiction, but that's probably not the right term for it.. I despise romance novels and most movies of that genre. Older romance movies are mostly okay. I like suspense, thrillers, most things along those lines. Medical, homesteading and prep books. And books about books, I am definitely a bibliophile.

My mother told me, when I was a little girl, that books are my friends. Sad that I could not pass that on to my offspring and grandchildren. they are all people with screens in front of them.

Spell check has never worked for me, I use firefox.

Husband got the tractor running again. You can't have a tractor down in August when you have a 34 year old horse, no matter how healthy he is. It still needs some more work, but he can use it if he has to.
I ran out of some things last week, and hubby wasn't happy. He's really going to be unhappy if we go into total lockdown again, because I know I've forgotten more things. Like Meemur, I'm tired of going to WM...
Tried to fill in the holes I discovered. WM was jam packed, most folks wearing masks, and seemed to be stocking up. Major shortages or missing items everywhere. The canned cat food aisle was pretty much wiped out again. They didn't have any 5 pound bags of grits, I had to get 2 lb. Seemed to have plenty of PT and TP but I didn't need any.

I've been going nonstop since the weekend before last. I've dehydrated, put up peas, canned pork, beef, tomatoes, soup, and potatoes. This morning I made jelly. I only have a few cases of jars left, and I could buy more, but I think I might be coming to the point of "...when you have done all you can do stand".

I watch you tube videos on what people buy for stocking up. Its rare that I see something they've bought that I don't already have. If they have something that peeks my interest I look into to it before I may or may not buy it.

My rather large order of instant oatmeal should start arriving today. Most of it is going right away into a bucket with a tight lid. I think that crap keeps for a long time and I doubt there is little nutrition in it.

"when you have done all you can do stand" I'm definitely getting to that point. doing a little here and a little there doesn't go very far when stuff keeps coming in the front door.

you could save quite a bit $$$ on your monthly electric bill with an updated freezer(s) - the new ones purr a lot more economically than a 1980 model ....

True, but many are so poorly made that they develop problems after only two years. Unless you know how to work on them, any savings go bye-bye with the repairman. I totally understand keeping the older units, but having had the flu and having the hot water heater go out at the same time, I will never push an older unit again without a back up on hand.

That's just it. He doesn't want to buy anything, until things quit. He thinks that if my freezer quits, he'll just run over to LOWE'S, and buy a new one to be delivered. Same with the AC and hot water heater. I've quit even harrassing him about it. Some people just have to learn the hard way. I just hope it doesn't cost me all the food in the old freezer! The AC and water heater wouldn't be that big of a deal if they go out. We can work around those.

Finished putting everything away from my shopping trip. The only items that I didn't get to buy were Aloe Vera gel and purple hull peas. I substituted the peas for canned cabbage, canned butter beans, and more seasoned mustard greens. I bought a bottle of witch hazel instead of the Aloe. Dollar General looked like a disaster area, and Hometown Market had a few empty shelves. Very few people in both places. Everyone was wearing masks again.

Something similar to this is my Plan B if the main freezer dies. (2.0 cubic foot unit) -- I have one on order at Lowe's, but I can't find it, now.

I also have a dorm-sized fridge that I've used when the regular fridge was broken and I was waiting for a part.

I have 2 chest freezers, so if one goes out, I still have the other one, but both are full. I would like to get rid of both of them, and get one huge one. Otherwise, I don't have room for another small freezer. I wish I did.

Awesome! That's being well-stocked.

One advantage of the smaller freezer: it's easier to run with a smaller generator, plus uses less gas to keep it cold if using alternative fuel.

Rightly or wrongly, I've been buying most of my meat in September/October to last until May or so. In the summer, I buy fresh meat, just what I need for the week because if power is lost, it's not a huge deal to cook it up and keep it in a cooler for several days. Most of our outages are in the summer. In the winter, the meat can go outside in a cooler.

I also eat a lot less meat in the summer. It's often too hot to cook.

I know that might bite me in the rear before long, but it's been working so far. I can scrounge a bag of ice for the cooler fairly easily.

I have increased my canned meat supply in case something does happen in the near future.

With my 2 freezers, I can cycle through all the meat in a 1 1/2 yr. period. I hate freezer burned meat! Both of them are medium sized. I can't remember exactly, though. I also keep other frozen foods in there such as cheese, butter, frozen potatoes, along with a few bags of flour and cornmeal. I finally canned most of the flour and cornmeal.

My garden is doing really great - so great that I had to break out the pressure canner to can the excess green beans. I was able to can the excess tomatoes in a water bath canner, but I finally had to bite the bullet and pull out the All American when my garden began producing tons of snap beans.

Tennessee had tax free back to school and clothing sales this past weekend, so I bought myself a new pair of heavy duty rubber boots from Amazon, tax free, of course.

Tennessee is STILL running their week long tax free food sales, so I bought a bunch of foods that the food banks don’t give out while I could get them tax free. Tennessee tax on food is 9.75% - almost ten percent - so that amounted to quite a bit of savings.

Got most stuff to finish cabin and put in small wood stove we have in barn. Thank you son for use of your truck.
Worked 3 hours with daughter and grandsons helping.
Get back at it tomorrow. Good Lord. I should have done this when I first got it. And hired some out.
Walls are half done. Cement board is down and on wall. Trim will be a good friend as nothing on this property is a square. But I'm happy to be getting it all done.
We opted to go with the small wood coal stove that's been in the barn. The big house uses coal so hopefully that will work ok and we already have it.
*Heavy sigh* we're pooped.

My fully vaccinate neighbor called to let us know he has covid. He wanted me to pick him up some groceries to leave on his porch. We have not been around him thank goodness. So far he just feels like he has allergies. He started feeling under the weather 4 days ago and has fever that comes and goes.

Night before last, hubby only slept about 4 1/2 hours. He was in pain and couldn't sleep. Last evening his blood pressure was up, but the low side was only 59. So we could not give him anything for it. So I poured him 2 oz of Gentleman Jack over ice. He slept well and did not wake up hurting and having to take a pain pill. We are trying it again tonight. He has not taken a pain pill all day. If 2 oz of whiskey a day works, we are stocking up. I feel it is less harmful to his body than the pain pills.

I finally got some tomatoes yesterday, ate them for breakfast with cheese bagels. :)
The high yesterday was 71 degrees! Unheard of in August. Had a brisk wind too, I thought I was going to have to get a jacket. I am really ready for fall! Bunch of stuff I need to do outside but I'm just wrung out from last weeks 100 degree temps...
My pension increased by a huge $14. I was dreading opening that envelope because I figured they had cut it again.
Did a fuel run this morning and it took me 25 minutes because the gas station was so busy.

I don't really care what others think about drawing a SS check based on spouse's income, but I signed up, and will draw my first check this month. It will be about half of what Cary draws each month. If I had waited, until I'm 65, my check would have been more, but not by much. We're considering it a blessing. We're opening another savings account just for my checks. We're going to be needing a new vehicle in a couple of years, and this account will go towards that. We're watching the financial situation in the country, closely, so if there are any major bumps, we'll withdraw it, along with all other checking and savings accounts. Some of it may be used for more metals just to be on the safer side. This check will be a good addition in our prep plans.

I gathered more tomatoes and figs this morning. I was hoping that I would get enough to can tomatoes this year, but not at the rate they are going. I get several each day, but they are rotting, before they have time to fully ripen. I've let them ripen on the vines, but still have the same outcome. They begin to have rotten spots on them by the time they are ripe. I don't know why they are rotting so quickly. Too much heat, and too much rain is my thinking. Guess I'll be stocking more canned tomatoes from the grocery store. Sigh, :(.

I talked to Cary, again, last night about a new freezer. To make a long story short, we've decided to eat out of the newer freezer, then transfer everything out of the old freezer into it. We're getting it down to only having one freezer, and using the old one as a spare. If gas gets short in the future, we may not have enough to run the generator to power 2 freezers, anyway. In the meantime, I'll be adding more Keystone meats of all types.

I’m still worn out from Monday, yesterday was spent for the most part sitting and playing games with the Princess on our old iPad that the kids all have games on. DH worked up some more corn since I wasn’t up to it and added another 9 pints to the freezer. I hate that my body won’t let me do the things I need to do.

I still have stuff that needs to be put away from Monday’s shopping and I have more stuff coming in today. I’m so tired I don’t even want to think about it. Our little pantry in the basement is filling up with both the canning I’ve been doing and the shopping. I’ve got to get things better organized. DH is already giving me a little side eye LOL, he probably really will when he sees what all is being delivered this week. He doesn’t mind what we‘ve spent, he understands why I feel we need to this, it’s just that things are so unorganized right now.

If everything doesn’t get locked down again, I’ll be surprised. Virus cases are going way up in the state and I read this morning that the county hospital in the county next us has many patients with it, 3 on ventilators and the’re limiting visitors etc. again.

I know what you mean about cases going up. I checked our state covid website this morning, and overnight we had 2,882 new cases! 134 of those new cases were in LTC. I thought it was mandatory for all those in LTC facilities to be vaccinated? In our state, it was, so hmmmmm? Another reason we're staying home as much as possible. I've had too many relatives and friends who have died from this stuff to not pay attention.

What is everyone's plan for trash? For the townies there will be no trash pickup I am guessing of course. Country folks can burn but will you burn. I can't decide. We burn now and I think we will burn then but unsure. So do we need to dig a big hole and put everything there? Just random thoughts!

Living as rural as we do, we burn everything that can be burned. We do have trash pick up day, though. We only put into the trash what can't be burned ourselves. If it comes down to not having trash pick up day, again, we'll do like everyone did before we had it. Just find a spot, and make your own community dump. What other choice would we have?

I feel your pain about things being disorganized, I'm constantly working on it. On the one hand I say no more but on the other hand there are still a few things I want to get.

Sheree: why would anyone object to your drawing on Caryc's SS. For goodness sake, you earned it too by staying home and raising your family or for what ever reason your will be drawing on Caryc's and not your own, its your business.

All the instant oatmeal that came a couple of days ago has landed in the mud room, to DH's dismay. Most of it is in a 5 gallon bucket (with bay leaf all around). I just need to put the stuff in there better to get more in and then put a tight lid on it. One thing with highly processed foods, they tend to last longer than less processed foods. It was a big impulse on my part to order so much, but I don't care, its getting packed away and out of my sight. I packed some last year in 1/2 gallon jars and vacuum sealed it.

I just want to put all this stuff all away with some semblance of order.

ETA: we burn and DH takes burned cans and glass to the dump

There are some here who believe that no one should be receiving any type of SS, especially those who haven't worked to earn it. They think that somehow they are being cheated by having to pay for our checks. That's it in a nutshell.

I did work for awhile before and after Cary and I married, but not enough to draw SS on my own. When our family started, we chose for me to be a stay at home mom. Both of our sons were very premature, and I didn't trust their care to anyone but myself.

Tell them to pound sand. I worked for 40+ years in one lousy job after another, put up with sexual harrassment for years, and one lousy supervisor after another. I paid into the system and I earned the pittance that i get every month.

Its younger people who feel like they will never be able to collect that resent they have to pay in to the system.

I had to quit work to care for hubby 24/7. 11 years. No one else to do it and not really debatable.
Now I'm too messed up physically to work, too young to collect ss. But I have a very small gov pension so that helps.
Our little farm is paid off, taxes very low. No debt and a little savings so I think we are ok.
It's a fully time job to raise a family and run a home.
It's work like any other job. You go girl.
Yes we burn trash, take glass and metal to dump. Worst case we'll pick a spot in back of property and enclose in pallets if we can get them and use that.
I do save a lot of glass jars and some metal could be reused I guess.
Just got email, we all have to wear masks, social distance and so on at the 4h meetings now.
I imagine it will be same at the fair. I think the lock downs are coming.
We got another wall in cabin done. Got to pull out the little stove and clean and paint it.
Daughter committed to just using pantry food for awhile so she is making beans and ham hocks. I love them.
