Will they like their new home?
I bet they like it way more than the shelter...
It's always great watching new cats here at the farm. My neighbors in the other half of the house got a new kitten last spring. He stayed inside for the first couple months, but once he started going outside, he almost never comes back in now...
It was funny last night. We have a small hole in the basement door, just big enough for a cat. So if they don't make it back to the house by the time we go to bed, at least they have a nice warm, dry place to stay for the night. We always keep "backup" food and water down there for them...
So I'm walking up the sidewalk from my car to the house. A wind blown, heavy snow / rain mix is flying. The kitten runs out of the hole, rubs against my leg a couple times, just enough to say hello, and runs back to the hole for shelter...
When I got my cat several years ago, it took a week for him to come into the house for the first time. He was already 7 years old, a former feral cat. Some friends had him for a few years before I got him, so he was already tame. But even with them, and a relatively small back yard, he'ld much rather be outside than in...
And that got him into trouble. He started doing his business in neighbors yards, and gardens. They complained. So it was either off to the shelter, or here at the farm...
He's mostly an indoor cat now, even has his own bedroom. Well kinda, he shares it with my old shepherd...
But he still has a "need" to go out at least once a day. Even on the coldest days, he begs to go out. During winter it's usually only for a few minutes. But in summer, he hits the door first thing in the morning, and doesn't come home until well after dark. He spends most of the time curled up in a comfy chair on the back porch. But he still loves venturing off into the woods once in a while...
