WEATHER Signs of winter?

Alaska is having cold wet summer. Typically that means a bad winter.
I would totally be okay with that. We need an occasional good cold one to keep out the riff-raff, lol! I am seeing more swans flying over this week (the Mat-Su Five-Lake area), so I know they’re thinking about their travel plans.

And all my fireweed has maybe a few days to top out, then it’s all downhill from there ;)

Geese flying overhead this morning but not sure if that's normal in the high desert at this time

Central IL here, but a couple nights ago I saw a flock of geese in a V headed in a southerly direction. It was really weird. They are all over here hanging out in retention ponds, but was odd to have them over the house, heading dead south...

I've got three humming bird feeders and those little rascals are fighting over them like mad.
Leaves from slippery elm and silver maples are already coming down along with the usual American black walnut leaves.
The night insects have already changed to their late summer songs.
Geese are already practicing with their young for the long flight South.
White Pines are producing cones like mad which thrills the squirrels.

Western Washington. The garden plants are all going haywire and can't figure out what season it is. Tomatoes are already getting ready to pick, a month early. The air this morning smelled and felt like Fall. I think that we might just have a long "late summer" season. Hoping we can somehow skip the month of heavy smoke in September but it's not looking good.
I’m seeing it here too being just east of North Bend, Wa.
The yellow jackets are out in force looking for protein, the Squirrels are building their food stores, and yes, the plants are showing it too. V

I noticed piles of apples on the ground/in the road next to a couple of wild growing trees today. Way early to see that around here. Usually a September/October thing for the apples to drop.

I'll bet the deer and bears will be chowing down on them this week. And the body shops will se early business from people hitting the apple scroungers.

I’ve been hearing the sand hill cranes a LOT lately, getting ready to fly. And…sadly, today my trees dropped their first yellow leaves. I know it’s coming despite a completely glorious day that I truly wish I could share with you all. I love Alaska, any season. But summer is all too short and this might be a good hard winter…and I’m really okay with that. Just wish for a bit more of this kind of day. <3.

Leaves dropping this early does portend a harsh winter.

Maybe it’s the rain we’re getting this morning?
But yeah, it just “feels” different out there.
Quiet. And at night the “fall bugs” are making noises.
My DH said he thinks this winter will be bad, because of all the fruit trees are producing more than they ever have. We have trees turning red that don't usually turn until mid September.

The lab started in on her winter coat last week. I have piles and drifts of dog hair all over my house! That's about a month early.

Also have one tree that leaves have already turned brown on, but that could be from this horrible heat and really bad air quality we've been having in Denver. The infamous brown cloud is totally obnoxious and the smell of smoke in the air is just as bad.

Neither here nor there.
The low here tonight just north of Des Moines Iowa will be 46 degrees, for August 14th. I put the comforter back on the bed, need to shop for a new pair of flannel sheets.

I keep looking in the trees for dry patches and if there are any I can't see them. However, a dead leaf floated by my head yesterday, it could have blown off a roof.

I'm preparing for winter, talking to DH about putting a propane wall heater in our bedroom for him and I also ordered an electric blanket for him. I covered what I need years ago. I want him to get a heater in the bedroom so we don't have to keep the furnace running constantly and if it propane powered he will still be warm if the power is out. I'm right off the room with the wood stove since I sleep in my recliner.

No signs of winter yet here in Northern Nevada. It's supposed to hit 99 or 100 degrees tomorrow, and we're now entering our second month of heavy smoke from the Dixie fire (500,000 acres and counting, 1100+ buildings destroyed) to the west of us. That smoke has reduced our visibility to about one mile on most days, with some occasional relief from wind on a handful of days. The Dixie fire is still only 30% contained, last I heard. Winter snows in the Sierras should end it, if nothing else works. Looking forward to winter this year!!

Day by day
Saw my 2nd gaggle of Canada geese yesterday. The 1st was the last week of July. That’s saying a lot for West Texas.

I saw a group of a dozen or so at a pond between Bryan/College Station and Kurten last week. Really shocked me, this is way too early. I posted about it in the GSM thread.

Last evening while filling water troughs for our cattle I noticed three cows have the beginnings of their winter coat...in mid-August...the clear signs along the withers of a line like the beginnings of a razor back. Oh my gosh....this is just way, way too early. We have not been cool with temps in the mid to upper 90s.

This does not bode well.

Didn't sleep well, and gave up the attempt at 3:30 am. While making the bed, I realized I had been COLD all night, and under a wool blanket, too. In a wool sweater now, and still a bit chilled. We've had immense amounts of rain - feels like October.

N Florida here. Hummingbirds are fighting like mad, pines are producing cones in abundance, which the squirrels are devouring! Acorns already falling

Roof of my house and all (lots!) of backyard patio and sidewalks were raked and swept yesterday. This morning, when I went out to feed the cats, the sidewalks were already about a quarter covered with leaves again. This is from three big maples and a huge sweet gum right behind the house.

I heard a "V" of Canada Geese flying over me the third week of July, and they were headed south. A lot of them stay here year-round, but these came out of the north and were definitely headed south. I am in NW Central Arkansas. Also, my hens stopped laying a month ago, this usually happens in September or October.

For a couple of weeks now, the air has had that "back-to-school" feel and smell to it in the mornings, even when it's already 80 degrees out and gets up into the nineties during the day.

Yep, even with temps in the 90's and near 100, you can feel autumn in the air in the mornings. Saw my first wooly bear. All black. Very unusual. I have no clue what it means. By the end of September and into October, I doubt we'll have a foliage season. The drought is killing off the leaves now. What a weird year.

I'm seeing leaves starting to turn all around me. And a bunch of pine needles on the sidewalk along the house, which is not right near pine trees.

Just heard more Canada Geese go over my place this afternoon. They didn't sound lake a large organized flock, but to judge by the sounds, they were VERY high, and they were definitely headed south.

Just planting the last of my fall potatoes this evening. Early migration of those geese sure doesn't reassure me that there will be time for taters to mature before the first good freeze! A month from now I could be wishing I'd planted all these containers of potatoes on a big flatbed trailer so I could follow those geese south!

We've been watching signs of Fall but didn't know if it was Fall signs or if plants and trees are stressed due to dry/drought conditions. Probably both. But the Fireweed is done now, ferns and other undergrowth are brown, trees are changing leave colors more and more, and the Fall wild flowers (for the pollinators) are turning brown. Some of the days are hotter than blazes - very unusual for this time of year! - but other days (and especially the nights) smell and feel like late Fall. We've got to get busy and finish our firewood stacking and get repairs done around here. I have a feeling that winter will hit earlier this year.

Temperature was 99 with heat index of 105 today.
That said, while we were fishing this weekend we did see a lot of red leaves...come on Fall!
