Putin Ally Promotes Nuclear Strike on NATO to Counter Military Superiority

Zoe Strozewski

4-5 minutes

Vladimir Solovyov, a Russian state television host and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, promoted a social media message saying that Russia could use a "preventive nuclear strike" to protect itself from the "superior" forces and weapons of NATO countries.

The post was written and originally shared on Telegram on August 11 by Alexander Sosnowski, who the Belarusian state-owned news agency BelTA identified as a political analyst. Sosnowski has reportedly appeared on Solovyov's television show in the past, according to the Daily Express. Solovyov, who the U.S. State Department has pinpointed as a face of Kremlin propaganda, reshared the post the day it was published.

"The refusal to issue visas to Russian citizens and the declaration of the Russian Federation as an accomplice of terrorism puts an end to relations with Europe," an English translation of the post read. "This means the actual entry into the war with Russia. Severing ties, supplying weapons is direct participation in the war. Moreover, in a war with really superior forces, given the number and armament of NATO countries. This is a real threat to the existence of Russia and may lead to the use of the doctrine of a preventive nuclear strike."

Russian state television figures have repeatedly pushed for an escalation of the ongoing war in Ukraine and have even suggested that the conflict could be a stepping stone for a larger fight against NATO. But after more than five months of the Ukraine war without a decisive Russian victory, how the country would fare against the 30-member military alliance remains unclear.
Putin has not publicly voiced any definitive plans to take the conflict beyond Ukraine's borders or declare war against NATO, but he has warned in recent months that any countries that "create a strategic threat to Russia" during the Ukraine offensive can expect "retaliatory strikes."

Sosnowski's comments on visas for Russian citizens came after leaders from European Union members Finland and Estonia called on fellow European nations last week to stop issuing tourist visas to Russians amid the war.
"Visiting #Europe is a privilege, not a human right....Time to end tourism from Russia now," Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas tweeted on August 9.
Her Finnish counterpart, Sanna Marin, told Finnish broadcaster YLE on August 8 it was wrong "that at the same time as Russia is waging an aggressive, brutal war of aggression in Europe, Russians can live a normal life, travel in Europe, be tourists."

Estonia announced last week that it would prevent most Russians from entering its borders with Estonian-issued Schengen visas, joining several other countries—Latvia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic—in cracking down on Russian travel in Europe, Reuters reported.
As Sosnowski appeared to note in his post, Latvia's parliament, called the Saeima, adopted a statement on August 11 recognizing Russia's alleged violence against Ukrainian civilians as "terrorism" and pinpointing Russia as a state supporting terrorism.
The Saeima also called on other EU countries to immediately halt issuing tourist and entry visas to Russian and Belarusian citizens.
Newsweek reached out to NATO, Solovyov and the Kremlin for comment.

BREAKING: Britain asked Russia for permission to fly a RC-135 spy plane over Russian territory

This coincides with Russia's claims at the Moscow Security Conference that Britain directs Ukraine's military response The Russian Defence Ministry sees this as a provocation that will further sour Britain-Russia relations, which are deemed to be even worse than US-Russia ties.

Russia Appoints New Black Sea Fleet Commander — State Media

one hour ago
TASS_20150119.jpg
Vice-Admiral Viktor Sokolov.Mikhail Metzel / TASS
A new commander has been appointed to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, state news agency RIA Novosti reported Wednesday citing military sources.
If confirmed, the removal of Igor Osipov and the elevation of Viktor Sokolov would be one of the most major Russian military reshuffles since the invasion of Ukraine began in late February.
The Black Sea Fleet has suffered a series of battlefield reversals during the war, including the April sinking of its flagship, the Moskva, and losses during the Russian retreat from Snake Island in the Danube delta two months later.
The Russian-occupied region of Crimea, where the Black Sea Fleet is based, has also been hit by what are believed to be a series of Ukrainian attacks in recent weeks, including explosions on the Saki air base and an apparent drone strike on the Black Sea Fleet’s headquarters in the port city of Sevastopol.
Sokolov was presented to members of the Black Sea Fleet’s military council in the port of Sevastopol, according to RIA Novosti.
"There was no public event, and probably won't be, due to the yellow terrorist alert level introduced in the city," sources told the news agency.
A spokesperson for the Black Sea Fleet later denied the appointment, calling information about the change of commander “gossip,” RBC media outlet reported.
Sokolov, 59, has held several senior positions in the Russian navy and has been in charge of a naval academy in St. Petersburg since 2020. Russia Appoints New Black Sea Fleet Commander — State Media - The Moscow Times

Russian military uses Chinese drones and bots in combat, over manufacturers' protests

Testimonials from Russian generals not welcomed by DJI or Unitree Robotics

Laura Dobberstein Wed 17 Aug 2022 // 05:30 UTC

Russia's military has praised civilian grade Chinese-made drones and robots for having performed well on the battlefield, leading their manufacturers to point out the equipment is not intended or sold for military purposes.

When a video of a robot camera dog showed up with a grenade launcher on Russian state-sponsored media RIA Novosti this week, many immediately recognized it as Chinese Unitree Robotics' $2,700 Go1 robotic dog – albeit dressed in a sort of canine ninja suit.

"Russian designers presented a sample of the M-81 robotic complex, capable of aimed shooting and transporting weapons, at the Army-2022 forum," announced RIA Novosti in Russian, before claiming the bot belonged to engineering company JSC "Intellect of Machines."

RIA Novosti went on to describe the Boston Dynamics Spot analog as capable of both reconnaissance and combat missions, plus tasks like delivering medicines and weapons amongst rubble, conducting targeted fire, or just patrolling.

"When assembling the M-81, Chinese technologies are used, the cost is 1 million rubles ($16,500). The company plans to launch production in Russia," reported Russian tech media source iXBT.

In late July, Unitree tweeted that it "opposes any form of refit and behavior that is harmful or potentially harmful for human beings" and that it only manufactures and sells civilian products.

Unitree Robotics co-founder Chen Li reportedly reiterated this point on Tuesday to the South China Morning Post.

If Unitree Robotics is sincere, it doesn't seem to be engaging in proper Know Your Customer procedures – its rendition of the Black Mirror nightmare dog machine appeared last month wearing a machine gun. It was reportedly also sporting patches that suggest affiliation with Russian Special Operations Forces.

Chinese drone-maker DJI has also made claims that conflict with Russian state assertions. DJI is already sanctioned in the US and has attempted to restore its reputation by suspending business in Russia and Ukraine.

In April DJI issued a statement clarifying that it did not market or sell its products for military use and "unequivocally opposed" attempts to attach weapons to its products.

"We absolutely deplore any use of our products to cause harm. DJI has only ever made products for civilian use; they are not designed for military applications," insisted DJI, vowing to terminate business relationships with any distributor, reseller or business partner selling its products to customers for military purposes.

However, the Russian embassy in China obviously didn't get that memo. It bragged on social media last Friday about how Chinese commercial drones have revolutionized traditional artillery weapons.

"The Mavic quadcopter drone made by China's DJI has in principle become a symbol of modern warfare," said the Russian embassy's Weibo post in Chinese, quoting Army General Yuri Baluyevsky.

"Most of the products are designed for civilian purposes," responded DJI in Chinese to the Weibo post, adding "DJI products are not suitable or meet the needs of military use, we do not support military applications."

The Weibo post has since been deleted. However, it was immortalized by screenshot and posted on Twitter.

The Register has contacted both DJI and Unitree Robotics and will update if there is any substantial response.®

Russia Is Training Drone Hobbyists to Fight in Ukraine

The effort to replenish depleted Russian forces blurs the line between civilians and military combatants.

Russia’s heavy losses in Ukraine have forced it to send conscripts and convicts to the front lines. A new center in occupied Ukraine is training Russian military and civilian drone operators for combat roles against Ukrainian forces.

Civilians trained at the three-month-old center in Donetsk do not formally join the military, the Russian news site Argumenty i Fakty reported on Aug. 12.

“It is important to understand that when training drone operators for use in war, a completely different approach is needed than when training a civilian pilot. Here, in addition to studying technical and tactical issues, it is necessary to train people in interaction within the unit, work with other attached forces, and coordinate work in combat crews,” an unnamed founder of the center told the Russian news site.

It’s not clear how “coordinated work in combat crews” differs from combat. And that blurs the line between civilians and troops and creates a new type of combatant, said Sam Bendett, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and an adviser at the CNA Corporation.

“We have to emphasize that this training effort blurs civilian and military lines. So at some point, this would have to be either folded into the [Ministry of Defense] officially, or be disbanded since it puts civilians in harm's way, even if they volunteer,” Bendett said.
Both sides have made heavy use of drones since the February invasion. The Russian side has lost at least 600 of its small, tactical drones, similar to the commercial drones that hobbyists use. Drone signals can be jammed or hijacked to reveal the location of the operator, turning him or her into an easy target.

Both sides have armed small drones to drop munitions. . This turns every airborne buzzing sound into a reason for terror, the center’s founder said.

“So the [Ukranians] dropped one grenade from a drone into positions and our soldiers are already in constant tension. They are waiting for a drone to appear now, which poses a threat. This is a serious psychological pressure. They alternate tactics. Once they throw off some kind of ammunition, and then they just fly in empty and this is an incredible stress for people. People get tired morally, they have phobias. It's exhausting,” he said. “We are not far behind them in this regard.”

Said Bendett: “This type of drone training will continue to grow in importance for both sides as the war continues, since both sides are now using large numbers of DJI and similar drones; and they are now starting to lose their drone operators to adversary counterstrike, adding to the importance of creating a pipeline of trained individuals capable of working in combat.
