If the p*ssing match gets rolling hard; DC will probably get hit with 25MT total, or so I've been told by a few folks who practice this craft. And more than likely hit by sub launched missiles; so as to catch as many .gov decision makers in place as possible. COG (continuity of government) isn't effective if the main players and their designated alternates are both caught and killed in the same strike.

If Russia targets the US with a nuke strike, more than likely it will lead with a countervalue attack. Kill off as much of the functioning .gov as possible. That would mean strikes on DC, Offutt AFB, Whiteman AFB, Cheyenne mountain, Site R, Camp David, Mount Weather, the cog facility in Denver, Barksdale AFB, Thule, the NORAD site at Clear AFB, Otis ANGB, Beale AFB. That would take most of the airborne warning ability and COG sites offline (IE smoking radioactive holes in the ground).

We would be leaderless and blind deaf and dumb at that point. The Russian could stop and ask for us to surrender; or they could send a second round of ICBMs in a counterforce scenario. Take out .mil bases, navy ports and bases, plants that make military equipment, etc.

One thing to remember-in both scenarios I've posted here all these locations are either in cities, close to cities. The civilian cost of just a limited strike (say, the countervalue portion) could number in the millions of dead.

Great post. Thank you for it.

When I read about Site R getting hit in the first round (which, of course, makes sense), I couldn’t help but think how the unfortunate folks in nearby Gettysburg would be in line to get screwed again.:bhd:

Russia Tests Large Salvo Of Hypersonic Missiles To Close Out Year

Less than 24 hours after Thursday's Biden-Putin phone call which the Kremlin described as generally a "good" start toward the cooling of tensions over Ukraine, Russia's military has conducted a large test-firing of no less than ten hypersonic cruise missiles.

It follows a similar but smaller-scale hypersonic test from last week which Putin had hailed as "a big event in the country's life" which marks "a substantial step" in bolstering Russia's defense capabilities.

Prior hypersonic test, via The Jamestown Foundation

Further it's significant that this is how Moscow closed out the year, and just days ahead of the much-anticipated Jan.10 talks with US-NATO officials in Geneva: "Russia test-fired around 10 new Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missiles from a frigate and two more from a submarine, Interfax news agency said on Friday citing northern fleet," Reuters details.

The report additionally notes the large test comes amid continued skepticism from the West over whether Russia's hypersonic program is really as advanced as Putin began touting as early as 2018. "Some Western experts have questioned how advanced Russia's new generation of weapons is, while recognising that the combination of speed, manoeuvrability and altitude of hypersonic missiles makes them difficult to track and intercept," Reuters points out.

As has been typical with such tests, it took place in the Arctic far north, coming at a moment of continued threats and counter-threats issued between the West and Moscow over Russia's alleged troop build-up in preparation for an offensive into Eastern Ukraine.

On the Ukraine crisis, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov aid in his latest comments, "If a constructive response does not follow within a reasonable time and the West continues its aggressive line, then Russia will be forced to take all necessary measures to ensure a strategic balance and eliminate unacceptable threats to our security."

"Our proposals are aimed at creating and legalising a new system of agreements based on the principle of the indivisibility of security and abandonment of attempts to achieve military superiority, which was approved unanimously by the leaders of all Euro-Atlantic states in the 1990s. I would like to emphasise that what we need is legally binding guarantees since our Western colleagues systematically fail to fulfill political obligations, not to mention voiced assurances and promises given to Soviet and Russian leaders", Lavrov said.

Shelters hell, getting out of town first, then digging shelters beyond the flash radius more to the point....
Yes, getting out of town is the best way to go, but for the folks who cannot leave town and will only have a few minutes warning before an attack, then having a bomb shelter is better than nothing.

Kiev doesn't seem like they want to do anything to ratchet this down.
Whether that's their idea or ours, I don't know, but shutting off access to Russian vessels is just another poke.

When/if Vlad gives up on working this out peacefully, if he hasn't already......
Hopefully the scheduled talks will bear fruit, or I fear some of the speculation and analysis here may not be far off.

As far as targets of a nuclear strike, does anyone know if the Pantex Plant near Amarillo would be a target, or something they'd be careful not to hit?

Pantex is definitely a target. It would fall in under a counterforce or second attack. And an attack on it would render, depending on the prevailing winds, the panhandle and a good bit of OK radioactively hotter than a firecracker.
There would probably be at least one warhead reserved for the helium reserves in that area too. I know the site is closed but those reserves are still a big deal.

First thing I'd do is go to Eisenhower's house and see where the bomb shelter is located. There had to be one there somewhere-never announced but it's gotta be around there somewhere.
Because Gettysburg would get one hellacious dose of radiation and some blast damage possibly.

Just dam, 20 miles into Virginia from DC, even telework won’t save my ass.

Depending where you are in NoVA, start looking over places that still have the fallout shelter signs on the building. You would be surprised at how many places here have good shelters.

Here is a Nuke target map of the US. Not sure of Amarillo but this might help give you an idea:

Heh. Everytime I talk about a coming war with Russia and maybe China together, people will look at me as if I am crazy. Most people in this country, just dont' know what's coming down the pike.
Knowledge of the Scenario unfolding in Eurasia right now is not common via MSM reporting. Most people are just oblivious. It's hard to get them to wake up.

I am located 100 miles North of there, fortunately, but we have a lot of good people down in those South-Central PA counties. No doubt that Ike had a bunker, although now I’m wondering if Site R (built 1951-1953) was built nearby partly for his personal convenience as well? Thanks, Ike.

I guess the woketards won’t have to worry about removing those Confederate statues from the Gettysburg National Battlefield anyway.

I've been doing some reading this afternoon. When I get time off and get everything done; there is nothing more satisfying than finding a subject and doing a deep dive into it. It's pretty nerdish I admit-but knowledge is power and even getting older my thirst for knowledge is still strong.

I picked the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the subsequent war as my afternoon study (and yes, stuff like this is relaxing. Much more than watching TV or a movie or just lazing around. ) Here's what I'm reading right now-you might find it interesting. Gives some insight into how the Soviets engineered the Afghan invasion. Also seems fairly relevant to the fun and games going on today.

Update: Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman: “It is quite obvious that the ascension of Finland and Sweden to Nato would have serious military and political consequences that would require an adequate response from Russia.”

..wouldn't advise kissin' any strangers, accepting drinks from em, orstandin near any open windows though

In previous work experiences, I was an aeronautical engineer/operations research analyst who helped plan Global Thermonuclear War® (SIOP/OPLANS 8044/8010) and developed classified hypersonic weapon systems.

Damn, I'm almost done with this open-source RISOP after 10+ years. I'm will provide pre-arranged details for the SF Bay Area, LA County, and Ventura County tomorrow. If anybody else would like to know where I think the nukes would fall, let me know below. I'll do my best.
