ALERT RUSSIA INVADES UKRAINE - Consolidated Thread

If Biden were serious about countering Russia we would see heavy units being deployed to Europe. That is a response that Putin would understand.
I can see that, no problem.

However if memory serves, and sometimes it serves out of bounds so there is that, Biden has been saying that Ukraine isn't a NATO member, and that we, the US, wouldn't come to its aid, other than providing material, and advisors.

If I read the above right, it sounds like our beloved leader is talking about committing troops.

Along with the article below, all this seems like poking the bear. Moving more stuff into Ukraine, when Putin has said in effect "not one more inch".

Ukraine’s border service said on Tuesday that the US will finance projects to strengthen the country’s borders with Russia and Belarus.

The border service said the US will spend about $20 million to purchase video recording systems, drones, and personal protective equipment for Ukraine’s border guards.

"The agreement was signed by the State Border Service and the American Embassy in Kiev. The project will be realized during the year," one local Ukrainian media report indicated.

The new project comes as tensions are high between the US and Russia over Ukraine and Western military activity in the region. Moscow views US support for Ukraine as a provocation and is seeking guarantees that Kyiv won’t join NATO.
Since 2014, the US has provided Ukraine with over $2 billion in military aid, including Javelin anti-tank missiles. The 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, which President Biden signed into law Monday, allocates $300 million for more military aid to Ukraine.

The US financing of Ukraine’s border projects also comes after the EU has accused Belarus of weaponizing migrants by luring them in from war-torn countries in the Middle East and trying to push them into Poland and other neighboring countries.

Belarus denies the accusation, but the US and some of its allies have hit Minsk with sanctions over the issue.

Realize that Putin is calling Biden pretty late at night his time, it will be 8:30 here in Ireland (or London) which means it is probably 10:30 for Putin (depending on where he is in his country at the moment they have a number of time zones but even St. Peterburg is I think at least an hour if not two hours later than us).

I find that rather interesting, since he could have called Biden say at 9 am or 11 am EST time, and still been early evening for him.

This call is not giving me the warm fuzzies either...

Between the childish arrogance of Biden's handlers and Joe's hugely outsized and demented ego, this phone call will likely end the possibility of a negotiated solution.

I hope Joe doesn't call Putin a dog faced pony soldier or challenge him to a pushup contest.

Odd timing for sure.
I'm not exactly feeling the warm fuzzies either.

Depending what is said, it may confirm Putin's thinking to attack the Ukraine.

Putin promises to continue Ukraine discussions with US, vows to send new ideas on the situation 'within the week'sp
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would send ideas on the Ukraine crisis to Washington "within a week" as a follow-up to his Tuesday call with US President Joe Biden, Reuters reports. Biden and Putin spoke for approximately two hours during their video conference on the issue, according to the White House, and both sides have agreed to keep talking. Russia has denied a new assault on Ukraine and warned against any NATO military involvement, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera. Biden reiterated support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and urged the use of diplomatic options, according to a White House statement. More on the leaders’ call: - Ukraine has been a point of contention for the two countries since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Al Jazeera reports - Biden also spoke with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the UK on Tuesday, the White House said - Biden warned Putin about possible sanctions against Russia in case of an escalation, AFP reports

Biden, Putin phone call gets underway: W.House

Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin began a phone call Thursday on diplomatic solutions to soaring Russia-West tensions over Ukraine, the White House said.

The call, requested by the Kremlin leader, “convened at 3:35 pm” (2035 GMT), a White House official said from Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden was spending the New Year’s holiday at home.
This was the second time Putin and Biden talked in just over three weeks, reflecting intense diplomacy to try and resolve a dangerously escalating standoff on the fringes of eastern Europe.

Ahead of the call, both sides insisted they were ready to listen. But with Thursday’s talk setting the stage for difficult, lower-level, face-to-face negotiations in Geneva in January, there were few indications of major concessions on the horizon.
Washington and its European allies accuse Russia of threatening former Soviet territory Ukraine with a new invasion. Some 100,000 Russian troops are massed near the border of the country, where Putin already seized the Crimea region in 2014 and is accused of fomenting a pro-Russian separatist war which erupted that same year in the east.
Moscow describes the menacing troop presence as protection against an encroaching West, particularly NATO, although Ukraine has not been offered membership in the military alliance.

Earlier this month, the Russians issued a sweeping set of demands, including guarantees that NATO not expand further and a bar on new US military bases in former territories of the Soviet Union.
The United States rejects what it calls a bid by the Kremlin to dictate independent countries‘ futures, and warns that if troops do cross into Ukraine, Russia will face blistering economic sanctions backed both by Washington and EU capitals.
Previous Western sanctions imposed after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea have had little discernible impact.

– ‘Mood for conversation’ –
Biden was to offer Putin a “diplomatic path” out of the crisis, a senior administration official told reporters before the call.
“But we are also prepared to respond if Russia advances with a further invasion of Ukraine,” Biden will tell Putin, the official said, adding that Washington remained “gravely concerned” about the military build-up and wants to see Russian forces return “to their regular training areas.”

In a holiday message to Biden hours before they talked, Putin said he is “convinced” that “we can move forward and establish an effective Russian-American dialogue based on mutual respect and consideration of each other’s national interests.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Putin was “in the mood for a conversation.”
“We believe that only through talks is it possible to solve all the immediate problems that we have in abundance between us,” Peskov said.

– US support for Ukraine –
The January talks will see Russian officials sitting down separately with negotiators representing the United States, NATO and the regional OSCE security forum, which also includes the United States.
Russia’s delegation will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, and the US delegation by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
Ukraine, which wants to join NATO but has been told it is far from being ready to win acceptance, is eager not to be cut out of any wider deal.
US officials have been at pains to insist that no decision will be taken behind the Ukrainians’ backs and that while US troops would not be sent to defend the country against Russia, ongoing deliveries of weapons and other military assistance are set to expand if Moscow attacks.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon said a US aircraft carrier group was to remain in the Mediterranean as a reassurance to European allies and on Thursday, CNN quoted a military official saying that a powerful US spy plane had flown over eastern Ukraine for the second time this week.
The plane is capable of monitoring large areas of territory, tracking and photographing everything from vehicles to other aircraft, the report said.

Is it just me or does this call fit the time filler category? Like what "new" ideas can Putin send? I,m still saying it is game on for Putin, and no longer than Valentine's Day.
More likely January

I believe we could have had a good relationship with Russia during Trumps term if it hadn't been for the demoncrats pushing the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. Biden needs to be treated the same way. Dog him day and night about being a Russian plant. His son definitely took money from them.

This whole thing has gone well past the "discuss and agree" portion of the program. This chat was merely window dressing.
Vladimir has already made his decision, moved his forces up and one wiggle of his finger and WW3 starts. Comrade Joe is completely delusional; threatening super duper sanctions. Laughable in the face of all the Russian troops and equipment sitting across the border.

But, rarely enough, I agree with Comrade Joe in one aspect. The Ukraine is a sovereign nation that has its' own right of self determination; the Russians be damned. And whoever Ukraine wishes to ally themselves is their concern and right. They remember the Soviet Unions' "gentle guiding governmental hand". No wonder they wish to distance themselves from the Soviet/Russian bear.

Putin, who held a video call with Biden on 7 December, has compared the current tensions to the cold-war era Cuban missile crisis in 1962. He denies planning to attack Ukraine and insists that Russia has the right to move its troops on its own soil.
