I used to wonder how the "leaders" back in 1914 could have been so stupid as to allow an assassination of a middling royal by a ridiculous anarchist lead to the Great War that led to the destruction of empires and the deaths of millions upon millions.

Many here, myself included, don't think this has a single thing to do with them being "stoopid". ..We've actually got some bonafide message shapers right here on this thread, which leaves me still, a year into it, utterly amazed. Typhoons intercept Russian IL-78 Midas aircraft

A Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jet operating from Ämari Air Base in Estonia has carried out the first joint NATO Air Policing interception alongside a German Air Force Typhoon. The pair of jets launched on Tuesday, 14 March to intercept a Russian air-to-air refueling aircraft that was flying close to Estonian airspace.

The pair of Typhoon jets were scrambled to escort the IL78 Midas, which was flying between St Petersburg and Kaliningrad, after it failed to communicate with air traffic control in Estonia. Following a successful visual identification and escort, the pair of Typhoons were re-tasked to intercept an AN148 airliner, also passing Estonian airspace.
The RAF and German Air Force are conducting planned Joint NATO Air Policing, a first for the two NATO Allies. The interception is however a routine NATO mission for the Typhoons which provides reassurance that the UK and Germany together with other NATO allies stand with their Estonian ally at this time of tension.

Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey, said:​

NATO continues to form the bedrock of our collective security. This joint UK and German deployment in the Baltics clearly demonstrates our collective resolve to challenge any potential threat to NATO’s borders, whilst demonstrating our combined strength.

A Typhoon pilot from IX(Bomber) Squadron, operating as part of 140 Expeditionary Air Wing, together with a German colleague were on standby on Quick Reaction Alert duty when the scramble was called. He said:​

We were scrambled to intercept an aircraft that was approaching Estonian airspace. We identified and monitored it as it transited close to NATO airspace.

Any aircraft that are not communicating with Air Traffic Control or on a recognized flight plan will be intercepted by us to ensure we know who they are and maintain flight safety for all airspace users. As a fighter pilot this was a routine business, even though I was flying alongside a German colleague. It is clear that all of our training and hard work paid off as we seamlessly operated together.

The Royal Air Force is deployed on Operation Azotize in Estonia to conduct the long-established NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. During March the mission is being led by the German Air Force, before handing over to the RAF. Joint missions will be flow till the end of April.

The commander of the RAF’s 140 Expeditionary Air Wing, Wing Commander Scott Maccoll said:​

I just watched, this YouTube of Colonel Macgregor,
and he was 100% spot on, with everything that
was discussed.

No doubt, the ZUSA is in the worst shape,
that I have ever seen it, in my 67 years nothing else,
even comes close to this time.

IMHO, they will not allow Ukraine to end this war,
with a settlement with Russia, and as soon as the

Not calling you out or anything like that, just a bit of discussion.

I'm thinking the actual assassination wasn't the launch of WWI as much as history/MSM makes it out to be.

I think the actual launch was Hungry laid out ....10 (?) demands which Serbia agreed to 9. The one they didn't agree to was handing over the perps that was in on the action. Only one killed him, but there were 3(?) there and were part of a group.

I think it then went to: Hand them over or we're coming in after them. Serbia didn't Hungry did. And there had been some treaties of support if one or the other went to war, and there you have it. France and Russia supported Serbia. Germany supported Austria-Hungry, and the battle lines were drawn.

In much the same way we went into Afghanistan after the perp of 9/11 ben Laden.

Moral to the story if you are harboring terrorist of whatever flavor, if someone asks for them, hand them over, or be prepared to face the consequences. Hand them over, and let them face their own consequences.

That's been kind of a rule of thumb for a long time. That is if you really want the terrorist, or are glad they did the job for you.

All of that is subject to correction.

France holds the biggest military exercise in decades - Exercise Orion 23 (3min)​

You may already know that Exercise Orion is the largest military exercise to be held in France for decades, involving 7,000 soldiers during the second phase. But did you know that France has also integrated troops from 7 different NATO Allies into phase 2 of Exercise Orion? These included joint assets from the US and UK, as well as naval assets from Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Exercise Orion's second phase focused on operations on land, air, sea, cyberspace, and even space. 700 French soldiers from the 8th Marines Infantry Parachute Regiment and an associated company from the 17 Engineer Parachute Regiment were dropped on an airstrip in Castres by 3 A400M transport planes. Another 3 aircraft dropped 48 hours’ worth of equipment and supplies for the force to secure and hold the area.

B Company, 2nd Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles from the British Army then assisted with holding the airfield, while being totally integrated into French11e Brigade Parachutiste. During another phase, 700 amphibious troops came ashore from the French Navy’s amphibious ships Tonnerre and Mistral, along with vehicles and equipment.

They disembarked in the coastal town of Sète before pushing north to practice area control operations. Amongst them was a detachment of U.S Marines, totally integrated with French Commandos, who carried out reconnaissance.

No problem. A Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip shot the archduke and his wife in Sarajevo killing them both. The short story is Austria-Hungary was furious and, with Germany’s support, declared war on Serbia on July 28. This started a seemingly unstoppable cascade of treaty induced feeding frenzy which led to the most awful war up to that time. As a result of that war, it can be easily argued that the rest of the 20th century was ruined. The idiot who shot the archduke didn't start that awful war, he was just the spark plug.

Your take fleshes out some of the details. There was so much B.S. leading up to that war and it could have been stopped at so many junctures.

My main take away is, we're doing it again. Just with far larger implements of destruction.

As before, it doesn't have to happen.

That's the short version of the build up as I understand it. I spent two weeks in a history class having to go over the details and almost jumped out of the third floor from having to grind through the minutia. I was informed that there were people who based their entire advanced college level courses and writings on this topic in order to get their PhD's.

There is only one spot that I can see to 'clip the propeller'.
What part of the Su27 would 'clip the propeller' without hitting anything else?
Skill or dumb luck to 'clip the propeller' without hitting a rear control surface?
Would the fuel from the reported fuel dump be sucked into the turbine and overspeed (damage) it and/or the propeller?

We've got some active pilots- tho presumably not familiar w/ flying the Su27, they might be able to splain how it went down- tho in the bigger scheme o' things, the pertinent points are probably we had assets there and RU put em down, and the order to do so was purportedly given from the highest lvl o' command, and last I heard we're still paying lip service to "believing it was unintentional"...
