Did my regular shop at Safeway on Wednesday, then sent DH back to use his loyalty card on Thursday or friday. The local independent didn't have anything I needed or prices that were exceptional. I did notice that while the sale price on half gallons of milk (97c) was the same as it has been since around October, the limit is now 3 - it used to be 4. Very few items that I bought - all on sale.

Hit the discount grocer yesterday when we had to go to a much larger town. Most of their stock is junk food (chips, cookies, vegan jerky --??). They had only 1/2 of one aisle for what I would consider real food ( canned goods that are not condiments). Very few beans or pasta, but lots of frou-frou stuff. I was able to buy collagen powder and CALM magnesium supplement for about half of what I normally pay, so that was good. I also bought some 2 gallon ziploc bags for whenever we raise meat birds again.
I'd stay away from that vegan jerky. I figure they must have some sort of nasty prion disease that causes them to believe bullcrap and make poor choices. Prion diseases are hard to kill and can be transfered through eating contaminated meat, don't know about STDs but I'm willing to bet that the vegans are full of those too. Not worth the risk.

Not exactly really recent news but Aldi's no longer carries ghee. We used to buy a jar every trip or so until we were getting ahead, then slacked off while we used down a bit. Guess we waited too long because I haven't seen it at any Aldi's since at least mid-year last.

RR
My store had it the last time I was there, but it was over on the clearance aisle.

No chick peas at walmart, either in the store or to order. Lentils at wm only in the small bags, no large bag to be had. Even the ones to order are not large. They use it have 4# bags all the time. I've ordered from Vitacost at a better price, but still not cheap like they use to be.

Our local Walmart has been completely out of regular and reduced sodium beef broth in both cans and cartons for months. I like canned better. I haven't tried ordering from them online, because I don't like dented cans. I used to get that a lot when ordering from them. I'm almost out, so I'll be checking at the meat market, tomorrow when I go. They carry a lot of other items than just fresh cut meat.

My local WalMart has some, but not a lot of, regular and reduced sodium beef broth and chicken stock. What is out is the LOW sodium broths, which I've been looking for, for a friend. The "reduced" is still quite high in sodium

Yeah, it's the low sodium I've been looking for, but can't find. There is plenty of chicken broth of all kinds, but no beef broth.

Wonder if it's regional shortage? Our Kroger has reduced sodium, at least in cartons, but I think cans as well. I just looked to verify, the broth I buy is Kroger brand. Don't know about Swanson's or other major brands.

For anyone that wants good homemade broth, a pressure cooker is awesome. When I make supplemental meat for the furkids, I throw in sliced pork loin and boneless chicken thighs (their fish gets baked). 45 minutes in pressure cooker, pour off most of the broth and shred the meat. I bag that then pour the broth back in, add peas, carrots, sweet potatoes and rice to cook. The broth is tantalizing.
For people, baking/roasting beef, chicken or pork on the bone and then pressure-cooking will produce a very full-flavored broth, with the benefits of "bone broth".

$3.03/lb? One pound bags at WalMart cost about half of that, here. But, there's usually only about 10-12 pounds on the shelves at a time.

I've trialed several varieties in my garden. Texas Big Boy has produced better than California Black Eye No. 5.

The last of the sub-one dollar a pound legumes, here, are pinto beans at $1.89/ 2 lbs, and yellow split peas at .88/lb. Two years ago, almost all beans/peas/legumes were under $1/lb, with packages mostly collecting dust.

We have a regional food chain called Food Giant in rural west Tennessee where I sometimes stop for human food while I am heading to my favorite country feed store for chicken feed.

i have, over time, found them to have better stocked store shelves than Memphis.

Today,I went there and bought:

Two 16 ounce packages of sliced bacon for $3.49 per package

Twelve 15 ounce cans of green beans for 50 cents a can

Twelve 15 ounce cans of corn for 50 cents a can

Twelve 15 ounce cans of cream corn for 50 cents a can

Bananas. Last time the boss wanted bananas, I paid 54 cents a pound for 'em. That was in December, if my rememberer is working correctly. Today, $1.19! Only got 3 bananas, but told the boss she gonna have to gag up a little more for groceries if she wants the gourmet items!
Did you get the hippie bananas by mistake? Regular bananas were still $.59lb when I was in the store two days ago. Been that price for a while here.

I don't think so. I bought 'em on a pickup order. Hit 'buy again' button. Just checked history and been paying 44-56 cents for that SKU every time I did a pickup order for the last couple years. But I'll know for certain when I go into town here shortly.

Our local food bank (SE MI) has been asking for the 18-pack Kraft Easy Mac for a while now. It has cost $18.99 on Amazon for several weeks. I kept checking back, and yesterday the price was $7.89, so I jumped on it and ordered 5 cases (the max allowed). Looked again today, and the price is back to the stratosphere - $17.89. Did my purchase cause the price jump?

Was shopping yesterday and noticed in the cereal isle that rather than the large choice of different cereals they used to carry regularly, they had spaced out the fewer choices to take up more space and make the isle look full. Our local drug store is looking pretty thin as well. Only one or two of an item on the shelves. Little or no back up. Things have been THINNING out for some time, but this is the worst I've noticed.

As always - no. The high prices were the third party rip-off sellers who you get shunted to when Amazon is out of stock.

wm does not have great value beef gravy, but they do have brown gravy which is not very tasty. Still no chicken gravy. I'm beginning to think I may have to learn how to make it myself. I know how to make a thin gravy, which I prefer but DH likes a think gravy, I've no clue how to make that and mostly don't want to.

Did a feed store and Walmart pickup this morning. (N MN) It was a busy day in town - hadn't realized - duh - that it's the 1st. Everybody was out and about. Walmart had everything I ordered, though my selections are usually pretty basic, and I will take subs on almost everything. Butter, canned milk, 10lb. of potatoes, yellow onions, baby spinach, eggs (hens won't step up for another few weeks), ketchup, dry parmesan cheese, apples, salami lunch meat, angel hair pasta, etc.

Was going to mention - about chicken and beef stock. I use the dry powder from jars - pretty much exclusively. It sits on the shelf unopened for right about forever, and after opening, always handy in the fridge. If I'm being extremely particular, I'll make my own but rare, as the powdered stuff suits me fine. I work the salt quotient into my recipe - IMHO that low salt and salt-free canned or boxed Swanson stock might as well be water. Tasteless and a waste of money. :shr:

Last word - and I know this isn't grocery, but just a head's up. Got a fill of the 500 gallon propane tank yesterday and the price was $1.99/gal cash. That will last here 'til well into next fall/early winter. If prices are that good everywhere, might be a good time to partake - so to speak.

My favorite tuna,

Genova Premium Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, Wild Caught, Solid Light, 5 oz. Can

That I've been getting for a good price on subscribe and save has gone out of stock on that special. I just got it for 14.30 for 8 cans, which is higher than the last shipment and now the only offers are almost twice that price.

I read an article that says an Egg McMuffin is now 7.29. I can buy a good brand of english muffins for 4.88, two packages of canadian bacon for 5.79 (only 3 slices in one package) and american cheese for 4.98 (24 count) and make my own for 2.62 each. Still not cheap but way cheaper than mcdonalds.

The breakfast sandwich "special" in this house is two pieces of toast, a slice of real fried bacon cut in half, and a fried egg. Even cheaper.

The baby organic bananas that I love are only .79 a pound here (they're worth the difference in price) I think it was a computer error .

It was a glitch in their online pricing. Redneck bananas priced at hippy banana prices. Enough people complained, it was already adjusted both on the website AND on my order. Guy said even if I hadn't said anything, it was made right. Also said they had half a dozen complaints from that one store.

That's cool that it was taken care of so fast.

For me, it's mainly a time-saver. Only things I have to run around in-store for are things that one can judge quality in person, like meats, produce, etc. Oh, and eggs. I like having 12 unbroken if I have to buy eggs from a store. Cuts the store time in half at least, by running in and looking only at the meats and other yellow-tagged stuff---which they won't select if you do the pickup order---and then going out and moving over to the pickup parking slots.

It irks me when DH and I do our monthly shopping at Walmart dealing with the pick up order carts or whatever they're called. They are on every grocery aisle sometimes 2 or 3 of them. We have to shop around them.
ETA: I'm not picking on you JDG, I understand a lot of people do pick up orders now.

Yeah, same at Kroger. They have big carts to fill multiple orders and they block big sections of shelves. And it takes them some time to check device, pick out products, scan them and check for next item. It's irritating.

That's why I do the curbside pickup at Walmart. Zero annoyances and limited "socialization".

Haha. And I don't know if our local kids who work those jobs are extraordinary or what, but never had any broken eggs or a gripe over fresh fruit and veg. I don't/won't normally buy meat at Walmart unless it's already packaged stuff like hot dogs, Oscar Meyer lunch meat or Johnsonville brats/sausage. Once in a while I'll take an opportunity for their 10lb. bags of cheap Perdue chicken quarters or whole chickens. Again - never a problem.
