I asked my doc which flu medicine would be best to keep on-hand. She said to check the ingredients since I take generic Claritin daily to be sure not to duplicate ingredients. Absolutely none of the flu meds are okay for me so I've not bought any. As for generic Tylenol and Aleve, I buy the Walmart brand and have been completely satisfied with them. Everyone needs to be careful about over the counter meds and supplements and how they react with prescription meds they are taking.

On generic foods, I noticed this week at our small local store that name brand chili beans were 25¢ less per can than store brand. Store brand canned fruits and vegetables were 50¢ less than name brand. You always need to compare prices. Of course, Aldi and Walmart canned fruits and vegetables are nearly a dollar cheaper.

Regarding cage free eggs -- hens in cages do not stand around in their poop as it drops through the bottom of the cage. Hens on the floor of the commercial producer do stand/scratch around in their poop. Free range chickens supposedly are on pasture. I refuse to pay extra for organic, cage free or free range eggs because I can't tell the difference.
I do see a difference between brands. My favorites are Vital Farms Pasture raised in a black carton. The yolks are bright orange as opposed to pale yellow on ones I bought from Smart and Final. I just saw the price is over 9 bucks a dozen on Instacart. I'm in S.CA High Desert for those of you that don't know.
For those of you with chickens why are eggs so small now days? I remember how big my great Aunt's were.

I expect everything, including OTC med's to be in even shorter supply this year. My outlook for the future looks pretty bleak. We all may be lucky to find what we need whether generic or name brand. Food, OTC med's, clothes, or anything else.
I'm going over everything we use to see where we need extras. I expect it to be a very difficult year for supplies. It's certainly not going to get cheaper.

There are legal definitions for egg sizes. It's in ounces... I'd be interested if anyone who is seeing smaller eggs than in the past would weigh some and see if they are even legal!

But younger hens lay smaller eggs, at least in their first few weeks or even months. Hens past their first molt usually lay more of the jumbo sizes. It's also breed dependent. I suspect the national flock average age is significantly younger than normal thanks to all the culls.

I expect folks to have to begin using out of their years' worth+ of preps from now on out just to make ends meet. Those who have failed to prepare are in a lot of trouble. It's already hard for me to restock my preps that I use out of every day. I would hate to know I was having to start prepping from scratch about now.

FYI -
I have used this brand of generic mucinex with good results. Five cents each. Lasts four hours. Amazon link below.

GenCare Mucus Relief Expectorant Guaifenesin 400 mg 200 Tablets Value Pack - Fast Acting Thinning of Mucus for Colds, Chest Congestion, Flu, Coughing and Allergies Generic Mucinex Medicine https://a.co/d/96Ix4gG

I looked back at my order, I ordered three 100 count bottles at the beginning of 2020. They are still working effectively.

I feel the same way. DH is sorting, repackaging and organizing our big pantry room. We've lost some minor things to being disorganized. I'm helping as much as I can, but I'm limited in what I can do.

And if we had to start over we would never be able to have what we have now. There were a couple of things I was short on last year but that's about it.

DH has finally decided to use the cabin for storing some things. For the longest time he said he didn't build it for storage and recently he has said that my brother will never use it now so we might as well spread things out by also using the cabin for storage. Mostly he's putting things in the back two rooms including the bathroom. We never got a shower in there and he's cut off the running water because of a frozen pipe. We could still use the facilities so to speak with gallon containers of water to flush or wash hands. The bedroom is still usable as such and the living room too, in case we had unexpected company.

Big difference in nutritional value.
Well, my chickens eggs are more nutritious, because I control what they eat. Lots of high quality, organic chicken feed supplemented with flaxseed, sunflower seed, whole raw goats milk when I can get it, and other whole, non-GMO grains when I can get them.

I don’t know if there is any nutritional advantage to the more expensive kinds of store bought eggs or not.

Central Iowa: (Hyvee is open today). Per a neighbor: store brand pints of heavy cream, half & half, and several national brands of ice cream were back in stock; however, the freezer contained mostly store brands of ice cream. This is the first time in about two weeks that they were well stocked with these dairy items.

The greenery looked terrible, but there were net sacks of fresh citrus, especially grapefruit and oranges. I forgot to ask about prices. I was gifted with six ruby grapefruits. I just had one, and it was perfect!

Depending on whether Central Iowa gets an ice storm, I'll be going myself in a day or two.

I've read that in China, Ibuprofen is in such shortage, pharmacies are selling it by the tablet!

Summerthyme

A few weeks ago I watched a youtube or instagram 'short' of a German couple in what I recall was a Nevada Costco. The woman surprised her husband with a two-pack of Ibuprofen, probably like 400 count package. They were amazed at the price. Not sure if it was the price alone or that it was available for sale here.
Maybe they have sales or packaging limits in Europe. One may as well get it while it's still this available here, because we've still got it reasonably well, for now.

99A49A3F-7D0C-4A6F-A449-439BB43FC32B.jpegLocal Meijer store. Northern lower Michigan. Least expensive eggs were over $5/dozen. Lots of empty space. We were at a local Dollar General and overheard someone asking if they had milk. The cashier said no and he said no one in this town has milk right now, what’s the deal? We were just on our way home from picking up our weekly gallon of milk from a local farmer who cow shares. Times are coming and it’s going to be tough watching people go hungry.

My wife and I went to a WKY WalMart today for my mom's groceries. The egg section was the lowest I've seen it in months. The rest of the grocery section was pretty hard hit, it even caught my wife's attention and got a comment, which is unusual for her. She see's things though eyes different from mine and that's usually a good thing, kind keeps me in check, but with everything going on lately I see her changing some.

Norcal - no eggs in 2 large grocery stores. Costco didn't have any last week. Not sure now.

Will check Trader Joe's tomorrow as they have some better quality eggs, if they have any.

I believe they want people eating less to no eggs as they contain many nutrients that keep you from getting sick.

Placed my first orders for 2023 online.

I placed six different orders through eBay for shelled, raw, unsalted nuts. What I do is mix equal proportions of each nut into a mason quart jar and then vacuum seal it. The nuts will keep fresh, free from insect or mouse attacks. Prices are definitely up from last year, especially cashews, Brazil nuts, and pecans. But this way I have a 12 month supply; getting the best quality.
I like to use eBay as a source because there's a lot of vendors competing. Quality can vary tremendously so you have to really read their entire listing. One fun fact I found out that paying a premium for organic Brazil nuts is a waste of money. All Brazil nuts are harvested from originally wild trees; there are no domestic tree plantations. Some sell nut pieces in halves or as bits for less. I try to buy from family farms whenever possible but it seems like there are fewer sources now.

Nuts are a great source of nutrition, calories, and when stored properly, will last without refrigeration. Beats junk food. If you buy in small retail packages you are paying top dollar.

Next order was from Ghirardelle chocolate; stocking up on their various flavors. Got a 15 percent off coupon code from the internet (which wasn't advertised on their site). Qualified for free FedEx shipping. Works out to $3 a bar. After following their tracking site, I can see now why they only offer $$ shipping during the summer. Their shipments have to go through southern California, Arizona, New Mexico which could easily melt their chocolate bars. Trying to stock up for the year but the bars keep on mysteriously disappearing.

I am attempting to convince my younger brother it's not so much a matter of price now, but rather getting it at all. There are routinely shortages now; dealers have no idea when stuff will come back into stock.

Unfortunately for him, every buy involves two separate decisions; his and that of his wife. She typically pushes everything off, or hesitates to give her approval on a purchase.

Shipping entire factories out of America has consequences.

Saved, to glorify God.
There was brand name Mucinex at our Kroger in various formulas, but the little rows of those were thin.

They had NONE of their house brand. That’s what I buy and is what the urgent care said to use since it’s so much cheaper.

But I may need to just buy some name brand if that’s all there is. Better than nothing but boy, it’s $$ !

I’m going to snoop around at CVS and Walgreens for their brand, I just didn’t get around to last night. I was wiped out tired.

There’s also Meijer grocery stores too.
If you can't find mucinex, buy bromelain from the vitamin and supplements aisle!
It does what mucinex does and it is made from pineapple cores, or just buy frozen pineapple juice, it does the same thing!

Where did you get yours?
Amazon. I will find the link. Works great.
I now always try to keep that and pineapple juice on hand.

Edited to add link:
Alvita Teas Mullein Tea Bag, 24 Count https://a.co/d/4Gsq0JM

I also found this which is cheaper and has other things in it, but can’t speak to its effectiveness.
Yogi Tea - Breathe Deep (4 Pack) - Supports Respiratory Health with Eucalyptus, Thyme, and Mullein Leaves - Caffeine Free - 64 Organic Herbal Tea Bags https://a.co/d/gX0QpZA

The first one hubby and I used and helped us through illness.

I'll be going to our local Walmart in a little while. I need to refill a RX and pick up vitamins. Since I'll be in that section, I'll see what kind of cold and flu meds are available and if there are any limits. I might go ahead and pick up more for storage, anyway, unless there isn't any on the shelves.

I love those Rio Ruby Red from Texas. I order them every year from Pitman and Davis.

I still find it hard to believe anyone is going to starve in this country. Maybe if the government collapses but I saw today a family of 4 is getting almost 1000 monthly in snap benefits and a lot more in Alaska, Hawaii etc.
That would be plenty if you didn't spend it all on junk.
