This is a new/continuation of the thread from the previous years (2021-2022).

Post up your personal grocery getting experience as we enter the year during pandemic and political turmoil.
Shortages, runs, deliveries, finds, and what's new or back to normal at the grocery store, let us know what's happening in your AO.

Please include at least a general idea of a location!

What the heck will this year bring with the cost of food and shortages? I'm about ready to find out as I will be making out an Instacart list shortly. Have to wait for the store to restock next week. Members reports on here are very helpful even if I can't shop in person.
Regarding the Mucinex shortage Amazon always seems to have enough of everything in stock. May cost more I have no way of knowing but I just bought some liquid no problem. Not thrilled with the ingredients but it might come in handy.
So good luck to all of us in 2023. It's going to be the ride of a lifetime looks like.

Didn’t know there was a mucinex shortage, but I see you can still get guaifenesin (generic for mucinex) on Amazon pretty cheaply. I am looking at one of 400mg (60 tablets) for $6.45. I didn’t compare prices, just did a quick search.
Perhaps an option for those who need it …..

Do you have a Sams or Costco membership? Guafanesin is usually cheapest that way. I get bronchitis on the regular, so I keep a pretty good stock of it!

Several suggestions I have if anyone places an online grocery list. I see so many complaints about shoppers and substitutions. First, I thank my shopper by name for shopping and tell them it is much appreciated. Second,I participate in the shopping so I am able to approve or disapprove substitutions. I have never had a bad shopper.
Also I don't cheat them on tips. As a result someone immediately jumps on my orders. And I find it amusing that these younger guys mostly Mexican kids are some of the best shoppers. Their Mama's raised them right!

There was brand name Mucinex at our Kroger in various formulas, but the little rows of those were thin.

They had NONE of their house brand. That’s what I buy and is what the urgent care said to use since it’s so much cheaper.

But I may need to just buy some name brand if that’s all there is. Better than nothing but boy, it’s $$ !

I’m going to snoop around at CVS and Walgreens for their brand, I just didn’t get around to last night. I was wiped out tired.

There’s also Meijer grocery stores too.

I'm sure most know this already, but a serious shortage of OTC cold/fever is expected this year. It has been focused on some of the more specialty mixtures (such a children's liquids) but sounds like it will expand. Probably first to cheap bulk generics, then small count generics, then up the price scale of the brand names. Prices may rise considerably in an attempt to limit the effects of the shortage.

So I wasn’t aware of this, thank you.

I did not know about all these shortages for OTC cold/flu meds. I'm glad I stocked up last year, so we're set. I'm hoping we won't need to use them.

Shouldn't last year's thread be locked? Just saying, because I almost posted to it, without realizing a new thread had been started.

I was prescribed Mucinex when I had covid. We had some extra money at the time, thank God, our prescriptions were $180, but that included two nebulizers. Anyway I read the ingredients and it was 600 mg of Guafanesin. I get Guafanesin from the VA and I've actually bought the generic brand to have on hand. Mucinex is just to expensive for me. I have a good supply.

There was a huge grocery/other stuff store(Super Center I think, there is a Sams there now) in the New Orleans area (on Airline Hwy) that had generic food in plain labels. At first I was not sure about buying them, I was new to the idea of generic foods (little did I know). I was conditioned to by brand names only. Once I got over the hesitation it opened up a whole new world of inexpensive foods for me. I didn't even buy off brands, although I was always a frugal (cheap) shopper.

I loved Winn Dixie and bought their brand vegetables by the case, now I buy the walmart brand or any other store brand I may go to. I just doesn't seem like that long ago that I could get 4 cans of vegetables for $1.00. I always had a full pantry, although nothing like what I have now. That long ago was in the 80's so I guess it was going on 30 or 40 years ago. Time flies whether you are having fun or not, LOL

I’ve not bought name brand in years.
Especially acetaminophen and ibuprofen!
The prices are stupid.
You’d think….they’d get smart and pride those to be more competitive with store brands.

Cary and I, both, tried the generic Tylenol and Aleve, and they didn't work as well, at least for us. That's why I switched. I agree, though, that they need to make the prices more competitive.

I just got off the phone with my mom. She had been to Walmart to pick up a few things. One dozen of large eggs were $4.82. That's 20 cents higher than just last week, and the supply was very low. As bad as prices were last year, this year is going to be lots worse!

Tupelo, MS area.

I asked my doc which flu medicine would be best to keep on-hand. She said to check the ingredients since I take generic Claritin daily to be sure not to duplicate ingredients. Absolutely none of the flu meds are okay for me so I've not bought any. As for generic Tylenol and Aleve, I buy the Walmart brand and have been completely satisfied with them. Everyone needs to be careful about over the counter meds and supplements and how they react with prescription meds they are taking.

On generic foods, I noticed this week at our small local store that name brand chili beans were 25¢ less per can than store brand. Store brand canned fruits and vegetables were 50¢ less than name brand. You always need to compare prices. Of course, Aldi and Walmart canned fruits and vegetables are nearly a dollar cheaper.

Regarding cage free eggs -- hens in cages do not stand around in their poop as it drops through the bottom of the cage. Hens on the floor of the commercial producer do stand/scratch around in their poop. Free range chickens supposedly are on pasture. I refuse to pay extra for organic, cage free or free range eggs because I can't tell the difference.

Big difference in nutritional value.

The VA will prescribe Mucinex. They will also prescribe vitamins B and D with calcium.

We use generic guaifenesin also..........Kroger/King Sooper's store brand is ABSENT and has been for a few weeks...need to scrounge some more...........we find it indispensable.

I'm a member of Natural Grocers along front range CO and one "goodie" is we're able to buy a dozen eggs for $1.99...limit two per customer. They were out for a week or so..........stocked up yesterday....Sprouts dozen eggs are $3.29...not too bad...

I bought the Kirkland (Costco's generic) from a seller on Amazon recently, and had good luck. I paid $9 for it, and it has gone up to about $12 now, but for 200 of the 400mg tablets, it is not too bad.

In case this helps someone...

We use Kirkland (Costco) brand of guaifenesin (Mucinex) that we get from Amazon.

I think the 4 hour actually works better than the 12 hour timed release. We have used this for years, and it's excellent quality.

Works out to 5¢ per tablet.

And and much as YOU have been through I’d take your advice in a heartbeat!!

I’m still saying prayers for your DH!
