I give up.
FL -- Got out of the house to my Winn-Dixie earlier. They're apparently still having Stupid Bowl sales. Scooped up a bunch of stuff that were buy one/get one. Plus we had a coupon for an extra $5.00 off if you spent $80, which we did. Campbell's soups $1 each. Got 10. Son wants home-made sausage McMuffin thingys, so got Thomas' muffins for buy one/get one. Bacon $2.50/lb off. Jimmy Dean sausage roll $1 off. Keebler saltines buy one/get one. Bush's regular and chili beans on sale. Texas Garlic Toast croutons buy one/get one. Folgers big can, $5 off. Chicken breast on sale, all kinds of bagged salads and slaws for real cheap. I could go on and on. Need to go back for some things we forgot, like Breyer's Ice Cream buy one/get one, and I think DiGiorno on sale buy one/get one. Definitely get some more soups at that price. How can you go wrong?

Not bad. I just looked - the receipt says I saved $43 on the sale stuff.

I keep a good supply of paper plates. When I open a new package, I replace with a new package. I like the Chinet brand. I'm not seeing them anywhere, though. Been looking for quite awhile now.
I order the Chinet platters on Amazon. They ship them from Sam's club.

Yeah, Sam's Club is where I always bought mine, but I haven't been to Sam's in a year. I may have to order from them. I try not to order much from Sam's, but will if I have to. Their Folgers coffee prices can't be beat anywhere, and I do order some personal items from them from time to time. I only have two packages of their large Chinet plates left in storage, so whatever I do, I need to do it soon.

Beef prices have really gone up this past year In Redding, CA. My mom loves filet mignon so I buy it from the meat market in Redding then grill it up for her birthday (she turned 73 this past Friday). Last year I remember it cost me $12.99/lb. This year it was $19.99/lb.

I picked up bone in chicken thighs for myself while I was there. I remember them having sales on it last spring for $0.79/lb. This weeks SALE price was $1.29/lb. Bacon has gone from $3.99/lb. to $5.99/lb. over the last year. A lot of other items have had price increases of 20-30% or more.

Over the past year I have picked up chicken breast, pork and stew beef whenever it was on sale and then pressure canned it for later. I rotate through my canned meat and have have had pork I canned six years ago still be good. I am working on having at least two dozen flats of pint jars filled with various meats for when the price is too high to buy. I’m half way to that goal and I think I better start hunting for some more meat sales!

Thanks for the suggestion, however, I done price comparasions for dollar stores and the kind and size that I buy at walmart. My choices work out better for me.

Its always nice to see response from you Barry. I do pray for you and your family.

Thank you. We all got to stick together. Times are going to get tough in the future. I pray for a lot of my friends here - you among them.

Someday, my wife and I would love to make my way back down to Natchitoches, and if we do, I would love to meet you in person.

So I went to walmart.com to order paper plates. I like the medium ones like Dixie, but the walmart brand. The don't have either one in the large packages. I looked on the river and they have the dixie but the prices are way high.

good thing I already have a good supply, I need to open a package and wanted to replace it with the same large package. Not happening right now. but then again I have a supply, why because I keep a full pantry.

I like these... 376 plates for $27.00

On The Level
Went to Hannafords this morning. Wanted to grab a few low items since the weather is predicted to be snowy bullshit all week.
Strangely busy again. Probably the coming snow storm. The two take-aways for me. Prices are UP and the social distancing, masking, and procedures have been upped a few notches.
There's now 4 or 5 large signs on stands as you walk in the door. Masks required, practice social distancing, it is extremely important for everyones safety, notice and follow arrows on floor. This is in addition to similar signs posted on the entry doors.
When checking out wait until the groceries of the person before have been scanned and they pay before placing your groceries on the belt. This cashier was not insisting on wiping the belt between customers like last weeks visit.

My Hannaford brand organic ground coffee up by $1.10. Rib eye steak looks to be $1 an ounce. Hillshire Farm Beef Sausage up $.50. Pound of Hillshire Farm prepackaged sliced ham $6.99, stuff was under $6 last year.

There were several empty spots through the store but I'll attribute that to being cleaned out over the weekend and it was early Monday morning.

I forgot to mention here that I went out on Saturday to our local Meijer (Northern Mich) and there were several big glaring holes again. We are not getting any winter storms this week nor are impacted by the weather. Maybe there’s supply line impacts somewhere but I was strangely disconcerted by all the empty spaces I saw. The biggest of which were the household goods. Only a few boxes of garbage bags, and they were all the small sizes. Only a couple of boxes of plastic wrap. Big gaps in the dishsoap and dish detergent areas. And then in food there were entire sections empty in the canned meat aisle and in the baking aisle. Only a few bags of sugar and flour again. Soups were thin. It was weird. Things were well stocked a month ago.

Anyone else noticing a backward trend?

I have been tracking the price of a 12 oz can of SPAM at my local Jewel Food (Albertson's) for over a year.

It is now $3.99 per can! Was $2.49 one year ago.

I haven't shopped since Jan. 11 so use this thread to keep up on what's happening. I do plan to shop fairly soon when the temps outside get higher than the inside of my deep freeze (-6) providing my car will start after not having been started since Jan. 22. My preps have kept me fed and I'm not out of anything, but I start getting nervous when I've not replaced what I'm using for over a month. Although I generally hate shopping when you're home alone for months on end even a shopping trip gains appeal!!

They have been light for the last few weeks.....

Huh!

Amazing, I was just identified as a frog in a boiling pot of water..... I need to jump

I was like that after a week of not going anywhere. I hate to think about a month or three.

One other thing I have noticed. People are really broke.

I mean not able to come up with a $100 broke..... I am sure they have a couple of dollars, but our clients tend to be better off and they are hurting. Most of them worked through the covid and are still working, but they are broke.

Not sure why, but I have a few guesses.

Anyone else see this???

Most of my friends are (like me) working too much overtime that they don't want. Dh & I are actually better off financially than we have been in years.
The women I work with have always lived on their credit cards and been half a pay check away from disaster, so there's nothing new there. I don't even speak to 90% of them. They make fun of me because I drive an old, paid for car. If they knew I was mortgage free, they would probably stroke out. Several of them have had cars repo'd and 2 of them had had houses foreclosed on. They all make quite a bit of money, they just don't pay any of their bills.

It was the best year we have had also.

Just too many people seem to be having a harder time than expected even if they work.

And yet my government tells me that inflation is way under the "desired" two percent.

I know this is no innovative idea, but just thought I’d mention something that could help y’all be able to postpone trips to the grocery store a little longer.....freeze some of your milk. A friend suggested that to me, and I really was happy to learn about it.

I freeze a quart or so at a time in plastic freezer containers. You do have to allow time for a frozen container to thaw in the frig before you can use it....that might be close to 3 days.

This might not be “kosher”, but to save time, when I take a frozen quart out of the freezer, I start the thawing process on the counter by elevating it atop a couple of empty freezer containers that are level. That allows air space below and around the frozen quart.

I don’t give any amounts of time for this.....it still takes a long time to thaw, and to be on the safe side, I might do it for just an hour or two, THIS time of year, when it’s cooler. Once the room temperature is warmer, in the spring, it would be for a much shorter time!
In the summer, it may not be practical, at all, except for very short periods of time.

I am careful to give my slightly thawed container only just a “start” on the counter, not long enough to actually let it thaw more than a little. And unless you can keep a fairly close eye on it, doing it this way, so as not to forget the milk thawing on the counter, set your timer!

Some of you may not approve of this idea, but so far , it is working for me.

I admire your lifestyle choices that have gotten you and hubby to where you are now. My family also lives within our needs but beneath our means. It makes it easier to weather the unforeseen's in life that pop up from time to time. I'm guessing your coworkers like to keep up with the Jones's. In my experience, that can make for an uncomfortable living situation in the long run. Always in debt...never satisfied with what you do have...always stressed about appearing "successful". They had better pray they don't lose their job or they will be in terrible distress!

Right now we're carrying debt. cannot wait to be debt free again! I hadn't planned to spend any money but an opportunity to buy the rest of the hammers I need, as a bundled set at a steep discount, and a bundled set of forming shakes, so OC told me to go ahead and make the purchase.

After this purchase I have three hammers left to procure, one of which is a 2 ounce ball peen hammer, and that I can pick up at Harbor Freight for not too much money.

Eventually I'll have my pitch bowls and repousse tools (some of which I'm making myself, learned how to do so from YouTube videos), just not this year until then I have gobs of stuff I want to make and will put up for sale at a local gallery in Des Moines.

MM, you could probably leave your thawing milk on your counter a lot longer than you are doing. Remember that the block of frozen milk in the center of your container is still colder than inside your refrigerator so the thawed portion of the milk should stay quite cold until the whole thing is at least half thawed. Especially in the colder parts of the year.

I have also discovered that milk that has been frozen seems, after thawing, to spoil faster for me than if not ever frozen. Also, when the milk is thawing, it seemed that the milk would separate and pouring off some to use it right away would give me milk that was either thicker or thinner than it should be but I can't remember which way it was.

There have been a couple of studies showing that the bottom 40 percent of income folks cannot come up with $500 in an emergency without borrowing or selling something.

The Greatest Depression is just starting.

To help with the separating issue when thawing milk, as soon as it starts thawing give it a good shake every time you open your fridge. Then when thawed shake well each time before using. I've been using my shelf stable milk because it expired in January. Its good for a couple months beyond best by date but not more than a few months. Why I buy milk I usually buy two half gallons and pour off around a cup from each before freezing. Gallons take a very long time to thaw. Half gallons maybe three days.

I prepared bankruptcies for 25 years and found people of all income levels had poor spending habits. Granted the lowest income people lived paycheck to paycheck so it didn't take much to tip them into crisis. They tended to consider credit cards their emergency fund. I always urged them to put aside $1,000 of each year's tax refunds as their emergency fund and some even listened. Higher income people just loved buying on credit so they had no emergency fund and the same small crisis tipped them into bankruptcy. I'm over simplifying because many bankruptcies were due to circumstances death, divorce, medical bills, job loss etc. that are difficult to overcome no matter how well prepared you are. Many more were due to lack of budgeting. The fact is no matter what your income is you must spend less to survive financially.

The minute you buy one and get it out of the package and assembled, the other one will pop up! Murphy's law...
