Ketchup Can't Catch Up As Nationwide Shortage Fries Restaurants, Fast-Food Chains

WEDNESDAY, APR 07, 2021 - 08:40 PM
Ketchup packets are the next COVID-19-related nationwide shortage.

America's most popular condiment, ketchup packets, are in short supply at restaurants across the country, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The shortage materialized over the last year as public health orders forced restaurants to close or limit indoor dining, which resulted in a boom in takeout orders. There were also health and safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that advised restaurants to "avoid using or sharing items that are reusable such as menus, condiments and any other food containers" to prevent the spread of the virus. More specifically, the CDC recommended eateries to use "single-serving condiments," such as individual packets.

Numerous regulations and or advisories sent ketchup packet prices surging, up more than 13% since the beginning of the pandemic. Heinz, the largest producer who controls 70% of the US condiment market, was overwhelmed by demand, and this is how the shortage was sparked.

Heinz told the Journal it would shortly increase production by a quarter, for a total of 12 billion packets per year. America's most widely used ketchup brand confirmed it still couldn't keep up with orders for its ketchup packets.

The shortage forced larger restaurant chains to find alternatives, the report said. From mom-and-pop eateries to large chains, restaurants nationwide have been scrambling to find alternative brands to fill the void.
"We've been hunting high and low," said Chris Fuselier, operator of a small Denver-based eatery called Blake Street Tavern, who has struggled to source ketchup packets in 2021.
Large chains like Texas Roadhouse and Long John Silvers have had to purchase other brands of ketchup.
"We feel like the bottom of the barrel," Texas Roadhouse spokesperson Travis Doster told the paper.
Texas Roadhouse used 55 million ounces of ketchup last year and has resorted to sourcing ketchup at Costco and other wholesalers.

Kraft Heinz said when restaurant demand collapsed at the beginning of the pandemic, it saw a monumental shift to takeout and delivery and pivoted production lines to meet those needs. Still, demand is greater than supply.

Other recent shortages include flour, aluminum cans as people consume beverages at home, plastics, lumber, steel, semiconductors, sofas, fitness equipment, hot tubs, electronics, and cookware.

Goldman Sachs told clients last month that supply chain woes might not be resolved until 2022.

I see no shortages at all in S. CAs high desert. They had all 35 items I ordered. But the prices are through the roof.
Same with restaurants. But there are some new closures. The mining supply store that did such a big business pre covid and several pizza parlors.

Was at a Weis store yesterday. They are a smallish chain in the PA, MD, Del (I think) area. Most everything seemed stocked better than normal. Lots of TP, and other paper products. Had some buy 1, get 1 free deals on pork chops, and other meats.

But in the pet food aisle, there were quite a few "Sorry this product is no longer available..." type signs up. One in particular about how they are working with Nestle to resolve the issues but Nestle is having supply chain issues, blah blah blah.
(I don't have any pets and didn't know Nestle made pet food.) Don't remember seeing that before.

Saw the same yesterday at Walmart. Had to go to a couple of stores to get the cat and dog food I wanted. Lots of bare shelves in the pet food (canned) section.

Hubs stopped at McDs and bought a couple of sandwiches for us to enjoy and got himself an order of large french fries, he was told there was a limit of three packets per customer right now.

I was in HyVee a couple days ago for three items so didn't spend any time looking around. I did notice that the produce section had many less tables than usual and then at the back of the store many less center displays across the whole store.

Just got back from a walmart run, bacon was picked over, and no ends and pieces, although I have a package or three in my freezer. Also bought a couple of boxes of texas toast, which I've never bought before. The 300 count of walmart brand of paper plates now has 200 in it. I did an list on my phone for walmart and the tp that I like had a one package limit, but I was able to get two in the store. Each package has 16 rolls times 2, and we use one roll about every 6 days, that's enough for over six months not counting what I already have.

The store is always changing things around, so wander around looking for things. Two different people were looking for things and I was able to find them for them. I nice older man got something off a top shelf for me.

I tried the new chicken sandwich at mcdonalds, it was pretty good.

DH needed a bearing for his saw mill, it was back ordered at harbor freight. There is a large old fashioned hardware store in Natchitoches and they had exactly what he needed. And since he had already looked several places with no luck he bought all they had (70). Maybe he's learning.

So I complained about walmart's paper plates, I looked on amazon and a package of 370 is $25.00. they are a name brand but I see no difference in the quality. Besides I'm boycotting the Dixie brand, don't ask me why because I can't remember. Must have gone woke.

I went to Smith's (Kroger) yesterday for some fresh veggies to make the dog food. Only items I really noticed empty shelves on was dishwasher soap and ramen. I didn't go down every aisle though but did notice that.

Our local grocery stores seem pretty well stocked (NE CO). Just got back from visiting family in SC KS and stores seem OK there too. One note, the warehouse for the local KS chain is not getting trucks (like usually 150 or so, and now 30-35) to the point they are sending quite a few workers home after just a couple hours instead of a full shift.

We have 12 #10 cans of the stuff in the pantry.

Just got 48 tuna type ( 5 oz) cans of diced ham for $48 ( a buck a can) delivered from walmart. Great flavoring and adds a little more protein for soup, casseroles, on salads, in tacos or eggs, or in beans.

I use those cans of ham, but the smoked flavor, all the time. My pantry wouldn't be complete without a year's worth in storage. You're doing good with the 48 cans. I try to store 52 cans at all times. That gives me a can per week for a whole year.

I have a good supply of the 5 oz canned ham and the other day DH said he didn't like it. Well, that's just too damn bad. He only eats beans if it has ham in it. I had fixed a can of butter beans with a can of ham in it, he ate most of the beans but left a lot of ham. I added a can of green lima beans, let it simmer with the remaining butter beans and ham for a few. Being from New Orleans I like my beans cooked down instead of just warmed. I did bake a 6 slot woopie pan of corn bread to go with it, he ate two and I put the other four pieces in a zip lock for him for later.

I mainly use my canned ham in casserole type dishes, or cooked in with dry beans. I also use it to make ham salad, ham and scalloped or Au gratin potatoes. There are so many uses for it. I have a new recipe for making a cheesy ham and noodle type dish that I will use this ham in. I haven't got around to trying it, yet.

I accidently found out that if I shop for cat food on Mondays and Wednesdays after 11am, I can find cat food at Giant. They will have a nice variety! Any earlier and its not out yet. Any later and it has all been scooped up!

That’s probably why the stores are short!
Chewy is bonkers with online ordering including the prescription food. Totally bonkers.
You should have seen the orders we got this time last year with lockdowns and they’re stilm pretty strong!

Unfortunately, we have plenty of cat food out in the chicken house.

The hens open feed troughs attract mice.

Fortunately, our two cats are both excellent hunters, and do so without bothering the hens. It cuts down on the cat food bill - and unwelcome, late night visitors too.
