Penzey’s Spices CEO: Trump Voters Must Be Punished for “Committing Biggest Act of Racism” (Five yesr old thread!)

He's also bad at math... If only 20% of americans support Trump, then why is he the one that is currently filling Cabinet positions.

I just sent them a message on their web site that I will not be buying from them any more because of his idiotic remarks.

I wanted to find out about the Pissy guy's business. Found this first off:

Bill Penzey’s Spices Ain’t Nices
By Rod Dreher • November 17, 2016, 6:36 PM

You can buy Penzey family spices, without the self-righteousness

When I lived in Philadelphia, I used to shop at a Penzeys Spices shop in my neighborhood. I was especially fond of their Bavarian spice blend. Penzeys says the spice blend comes from, or is at least inspired by, the cooking of owner Bill Penzey Jr.’s grandmother. Nothing tastes better on pork loin or roasted turkey than that stuff. Just the other day I told my wife that I wanted to get some more of it for the holidays, and — not kidding about this — I was planning to go to the Penzeys website and order some by mail.

But: a reader just forwarded the latest e-mail newsletter from Bill Penzey Jr.. I had a vague sense that he was some kind of genial Ben & Jerry’s progressive, but I did not realize until reading this, then spending a bit of time googling, that he’s also a jerk. Here’s what he sent to his customers:

Racism Update: At Penzeys we believe it’s not the use of tools that set us on a different path from the rest of the animal world; what has set humanity in motion is cooking. In our nearly a million years gathered together around the fire, cooking shaped our bodies and transformed our minds. Cooking unlocked our potential and gave birth to reason, to religion, and to politics and government. The kindness of tens of thousands of generations of cooks created our humanity, but racism, sexism, and homophobia can all very quickly unravel all the goodness cooking puts out into the world. As the voice of cooks, we will never sit idly by while that happens.
You may have read Tuesday Night’s email. In it I said: “The open embrace of racism by the Republican Party in this election is now unleashing a wave of ugliness unseen in this country for decades. The American people are taking notice. Let’s commit to giving the people a better choice. Our kindness really is our strength.”
Since I ask you to read my emails, I feel it’s only right that I read each of your replies. In sifting through those replies it was clear that, though not intended, a good number of people seemed to sincerely believe that in my statement I was calling all Republicans racists. In the emails of those Republicans who voted for someone other than the party’s nominee, I sensed genuine pain at having the strength of character to not go along with what was happening, but nonetheless be grouped in with those who were. I apologize for writing something that caused you pain; that is not the person I want to be. You are your party’s future, and you deserve my admiration and respect, and your country’s as well.
For the rest of you, you just voted for an openly racist candidate for the presidency of the United States of America. In your defense, most of you did so without thinking of the consequences of your candidate’s racism, because for most of you the heartbreaking destruction racism causes has never been anything you or your loved ones have had to experience. But the thing is elections have their consequences. This is no longer sixty years ago. Whether any of us like it or not, for the next four years the 80% of this country who did not just vote for an openly racist candidate are going to treat you like you are the kind of person who would vote for an openly racist candidate.
You can get angry at everyone else for treating you like you just did the thing you just did, or you can take responsibility for your actions and begin to make amends. If you are lucky and younger family members are still coming over for Thanksgiving, before it’s too late, take a moment and honestly think about how your actions must look through their eyes. Simply saying “I never thought he’d win” might be enough. But if you have the means, leaving a receipt from a sizable donation to the ACLU or the SPLC accidentally laying around where you carve the turkey, might go over even better.
Or, just do what you do best and volunteer. Through our customers’ support, we’ve given away a lot of our Penzeys Pepper, the Pepper with heart. More often than not, those we meet cooking and serving food to feed those in need are Republicans. You really are a good bunch, but you just committed the biggest act of racism in American history since Wallace stood in the schoolhouse doorway 53 years ago. Make this right. Take ownership for what you have done and begin the pathway forward.
Thanks for reading,

Bill
bill@penzeys.com

Got that? Most of the people Bill Penzey meets serving food to the poor and hungry are Republicans, but a lot of them voted for Trump, and they’re going to have to prove their moral worth to ol’ Bill before he will give them a pass.

Well. I’m a conservative who did not vote for Trump, but I don’t want any part of Bill Penzey’s sanctimony and condescension. I’m not a big one for boycotts, and it doesn’t bother me one bit if a merchant holds political opinions opposed to my own, and advocates for his or her candidate or issue. That’s what America is about. But I’m not about to spend a solitary sou, farthing, or pfennig in the store of a merchant who has such open contempt for people like me. No, I didn’t vote for Trump, but as far as I’m concerned, I would like for Bill Penzey to assume that I did. I know lots of good men and women who voted for Trump, and the idea that Bill Penzey despises them puts me off of his business for good.

There’s a happy ending here. While looking around online to see what Bill Penzey’s problem is, I discovered that his sister Patty Erd and her husband Tom run a competing (but much smaller) spice business, called The Spice House. Bill Penzey Sr. and his wife started the business in the 1950s, and Patty inherited it. Bill Jr, her younger brother, started his own catalog company, Penzeys. I have no idea what the Erds’ politics are — far as I know, they could be commies, or they could be Trumpkins — but they don’t seem to make a habit of getting on their high horse and insulting their customers. Even better, they make a Bavarian seasoning!

I buy all of my spices at my local spice shop, but they have nothing in stock like the Bavarian blend. I have just ordered some from The Spice Shop for my Thanksgiving turkey — and if you’re looking for something different and delicious to try this year, I recommend the same to you.

This Bill Penzey reminds me of the proprietor of a neighborhood coffee shop on Court Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, when we lived there in the late 1990s. Cobble Hill is very much a liberal place, and the kind of neighborhood where people want to support the local guy, but this shop owner was so over the top obnoxious in his left-wing politics that he drove people away. You didn’t want to go there, because the guy couldn’t stand kids, and you felt that he was constantly hovering over you judging you for failing to live up to his extremely particular standards. When Starbucks opened down the street, that was the end of him, if only because Starbucks was happy to welcome moms with strollers, and you could sit and have your cup of coffee without being judged.

P.S. I like Kinder's seasonings for meat. You can order their stuff on line and they have a store in Reno, NV.

Penzey says only 20% of Americans support Trump.

I don't know how you can count "support."

But it's easier to count votes. And about 60 million of us voted for Trump. If you do the math for the total population ... not just registered voters ...

I prefer Spice House myself. They have some wonderful blends, esp curries. A few years ago I read the story others have posted and switched from Penzeys---it sounded like the brother stole the business from the person who had the passion for it. Penzeys and Spice House have the best cinnamon I've ever found, but almost everything else is cheaper elsewhere.
Azure has good quality bulk spices, just not a huge variety.

Just another alternative to think about would be the ole vigilante trial then a tar and feather party. The charge would be for being stupid. There should be laws against stupid. Just saying if he thinks voting for Trump was bad, well the way you treat people can have its own payment

What's with all the 'Trump supporters need to be punished'? ('Punished' not like we're unruly children, but like 'purge'.)

The democrats/liberals are close to crossing a red line - looks like some want to commit 'Trump supporter genocide'. Wouldn't put it past THEM if something happened to Trump.

Remember - THEY think we are irredeemable.

PS Sent an email to Penzey's customer service on their website - just a short comment about their CEO speaking out against Trump supporters and even suggesting forms of punishment. Wrote I won't buy their spices any more. https://www.penzeys.com/shop/recipes/crawfish-and-shrimp-étouffée/. Posted on the Penzey Facebook page too. Noted that I think this CEO must treat his employees like children.

They are were an excellent source of spices for serious kitchenistas.
I must not be a kitchenistas. I like spices from the Atlantic Spice Co. From the prices I saw at the Penzey’s Spices web site it looks like I am getting a pound of spice from Atlantic instead of a teency little jar.

Atlantic Spice Co web site. http://www.atlanticspice.com/Spices-Herbs-Food-Items_c_21.html

IMHO Penzey’s Spices can keep their spices and opinions. Did their CEO fail remedial math. How did 49% of the vote become 20%? Do they think deplorables don't cook? Counting down to abject apology and business fail in ten, nine,,,,,

Should You Let Bygones Be Bygones?

2016-11-10 05:00 by Karl Denninger

Before you decide let me give you my perspective -- and decision.

There are plenty of people out of the 59 million or so who voted for Hillary that didn't understand a thing about what she really stood for, or her record. This is properly chargeable against them, as it is utterly necessary before exercising the franchise to perform some sort of diligence, but there is a large difference between negligence and intent.

But willful blindness or an intentional act is not negligence.

That is especially true when we're talking about corporate actors, who do much more than cast a ballot or cry on social media -- they put the weight of their firms behind their proclamations, whether through huge political donations, public speechifying using their corporations as a means of amplifying their speech or acts that privilege one choice in voting over another.

Those who are in the second category must not be forgiven; their acts were not only corrosive to our republic as intentional, leveraged acts they were far more damaging than even those who voted for Hillary for some puerile reason such as "because vagina" even while fully-aware that she broke felony laws on repeated occasions by intentionally mishandling classified information.

These corporate actors include Starbucks, Facebook, CNN and many others. Among media outlets, whether social media or mainstream, it's even worse than when a CEO comes out and proclaims support (as was the case for Starbucks); those organizations intentionally slanted their presentation of "news" and censored opinions they did not agree with. Some of them haven't even stopped after the election; CNN, for example, ran a story disparaging Melania Trump on Wednesday long after the election was over.

I'm not going to forgive any of them nor rescind my boycotts. When you announce such a thing and decide to do it you either mean it or you don't. The various mainstream press organs and CEOs do what they do in this regard because they're confident that even if you do stop shopping in their stores or you do stop patronizing their advertisers you will forgive them once the election is over and go back to whatever you used to do!

The only way we will ever get durable change in behavior is if we do not go back to our previous behavior. To do otherwise is simply to put a price on their "investment" in trying to slant an election -- that is, they simply look at the potential lost sales during the election process and weigh that against whatever sort of "special interest" access, bill, legislative agenda or other item(s) they believe they'll get when their chosen candidate wins.

To destroy that business model you have to make your decision durable so that each time they do something like this they***** off and permanently lose some percentage of their customer base. This makes such a strategy on their part always a loser because each time they accumulate more boycotting customers they permanently destroy their business opportunities and there is nothing they can do to get them back, irrespective of the outcome of the contest. Done more than a few times they have no customers, no matter which side of the argument they happen to be on!

So no, I won't rescind my decisions that arose during this election season with regard to boycotts and shunning and in my opinion neither should you.

"Holding a grudge", particularly when it comes to the corporate actors who inserted themselves into this campaign is the only legal way we can put a stop to that behavior.

Take that Zucker****er and Howard Schultz.

Now let me add to this, and yes, this is personal and I mean it.

If you are in a meltdown because Hillary lost then you're unfit to adult. You're unfit to hold a job. You're unfit to evaluate the cost of credit to buy a car -- or a house. You're unfit to choose what to eat, or to evaluate various options for treatment of a medical condition. You're unfit to carry on the daily requirements of living on your own, independently, making your own decisions and being responsible for them -- including voting.

You are in fact an emotional infant, no older than 2. You are throwing a crybully tantrum, exactly as a 2 year old does when their parent refuses to give them the second bite of chocolate they want. And if you are in fact older than 2 by more than a few years the responsibility for your frail emotional state is on you, not someone else. To the extent you stuck that tantrum out in public where others can see it they are perfectly within their rights to deduce that you're unemployable, you're emotionally unstable and thus you're unsafe to be around in any capacity.

It is perfectly fine to decide that if an election goes the "wrong" way you are going to alter how you live and decisions you make. I did that after Obama was proved to be a clown car brigade, and went even further after the 2012 elections. Had Hillary won there were even further steps that I was prepared to take in withdrawing from an economic and political system that had no congruence with what I believe in, and had done the preliminary planning to do so.

But you didn't see me crying, or whining, or having a full on psychotic break, unable to handle ordinary life and needing an "excuse" from an exam, from work or simply from functioning in an everyday manner.

Never mind Obama's "gracious" manner after he was elected. Remember that? I'll help you: "Elections have consequences and at the end of the day I won." That's a direct quote from Obama himself. Guess what? Those of us who opposed his agenda and didn't like the outcome didn't cry, we didn't whine and we certainly didn't riot. We could have, too -- we do own a lot of guns, you know, and we could have used them, but we didn't. We did the representative republic thing -- we accepted the outcome even though we disagreed with it -- and with what was shortly thereafter announced and followed. You, on the other hand, have done the exact opposite in the face of a man who was both gracious and pleasant to the woman he beat, and you didn't even wait for actual policy to be rolled out.

Trump did not say "tough crap; I won, you lost" or anything similar. Yet you have taken to the streets, you have looted, burned and, in at least one known case, assaulted and battered people who you think voted for the other guy. Representative republic? Not so much, right? Just remember before you riot, loot and burn -- we still have our guns, we refine all your gasoline, we produce most of your electricity and we grow all your food too. How many deer can you shoot and eat in the inner city of Chicago? How much wheat can you grow to make bread? How many apple trees are there .vs. how many people? How well does your car run without gas and do your lights work without power? Better think long and hard about all this, because I assure you -- we'll be just fine if you turn your cities into cesspools and smoking craters yet should you try to come do the same thing out here where we have some respect for both the democratic process along with The Rule of Law you're going to get the hardest lessons there are and they will be delivered quickly in lawful self-defense.

Snowflake, meet flamethrower. He's called "the real world" and when, not if you melt -- tough crap.

I've loved Penzey's spices for a long time. But I got VERY sick of their damned liberal politics years ago... the cutsey "gay couple" (two men, with twin (or triplet? Can't remember, and didn't really care) "daughters") who just had to be a "feature story" was about enough for me.

Their blends, etc are great, but not THAT great. And now that their CEO has clearly said he doesn't give a damn about our money or business, I'll never deal with them again. As others have said, www.Atlanticspice.com has great prices on bulk basics, and I can make my own blends...

Summerthyme (I wonder if they have any idea how much money customers like I spent over the years, who won't be coming back- ever?)

They probably don't have a clue. They are busy affirming one another's delusions. When their profits drop, they will blame Trump, or Bush, or Eisenhower. Probably not Eisenhower, since that would require some knowledge of history (which is raciss).

Where does all this Trump is a racist stuff come from? That we shouldn't be letting unvetted Muslims from terrorist hotspots into the US without first figuring out how to properly vet them? By taking a stand against criminal illegals coming into the country? Neither stance is even remotely racist.

I feel like you're truly asking, so I'll reply. You can take a stand against illegal aliens without calling them rapists and murderers and oh, maybe some are good people. He claimed an American judge couldn't do his job correctly, because of his race. If you have a problem with someone and how they do their job the reason best be something better than what color/religion/gender they are. Those are two reasons just off the top of my head, but I'm fairly certain there's more.

I remember the Watkins linoment (sp) salesman. Used to come door to door when I was a toddler. This was in rural north GA-I remember he'd come to the door and mama let him in ; she always bought watkins linoment, vanilla extract, pickling spices and I think he sold candy as well. Mama never let a stranger in our (4 room no running water no indoor bathroom house) but he was always welcome. Mama said their stuff was the best. The bread and butter pickles, watermelon rind pickles and all she made with the spices were always delicious.

Thank you Shane for taking me back to a pleasant childhood memory.

Yes, I was serious in my question. Trump certainly could have better phrased many things he said during the campaign but he never made negative racial remarks about legal Hispanic immigrants or native born Americans of Hispanic descent. He spoke out against illegals, perhaps too strongly in his characterization of them, but based on actions rather than race. Same thing with the LaRaza judge. He is not a run of the mill judge of Hispanic descent but rather a LaRaza supporter which is not exactly someone I'd be comfortable with rendering a fair verdict for non-Hispanics. The same people that call Trump a racist called anyone that didn't vote for Obama a racist and whenever anyone didn't agree with Obama they were called a racist, and many who call Trump a racist call every white person a racist simply for being white.

The problem with all this Trump and his supporters are racist drivel is this. It is a FACT that the very same voters, in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and all the others voted TWICE FOR OBAMA IN 2008 AND 2012. It is a FACT that these same voters, who voted twice for Obama, voted for Trump in 2016. So, how can they be "racist" when they voted for Obama twice?
The Democrats apparently haven't figured out that the previous Obama voters REJECTED OBAMA, HIS POLICIES AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IDEOLOGY IN OVERWHELMING NUMBERS IN 2016. THE REASON THEY DID SO WASN'T BECAUSE THEY WERE/ARE RACISTS. IT WAS THEY DECIDED TRUMP WAS BETTER THAN HELLARY THE SHREW.

Yep, they still haven't figured this out.

Thanks, Shane, for reminding us of Watkins products. They have spices and extracts. Both are excellent.

I actually prefer their flavorings over other brands I've tried. Two of my faves are their coconut and rum. The coconut makes the best frosting to put on a chocolate cake!

And, one way I like their rum flavoring is to heat up a cup of Mrs. Butterworth's lite syrup, add 1 Tbs. butter and a tsp. of Watkins rum flavor. So good on pancakes, waffles or French Toast.

Sorry for the thread drift.

I'm thinking a couple things here........

1) People who are most open to the idea of multiculturalism as a strength in Western/European societies tend to be those who are least likely to have been exposed to any of that on a first hand daily basis........aka elite and upper class liberals who praise such mixing but never in their neighborhood or as social/active members at their country clubs............

You just explained why Marxist/Socialist leaders always emerge from the bourgeoisie, not the working and underclasses or so-called underclass... in a rather convoluted, guilty expression of noblesse oblige.
