I read a tweet and an article about it a few days ago and for some reason I was thinking it was going to be on Tuesday. But, Wednesday it is...even in the first article I read.

I thought it was interesting and funny (ha ha) that no congressional aids will be allowed to attend. I guess he figures it is easier to detect a leaker if he keeps it to as few people as possible.

Anyway, I figure things are going to get "interesting" at the very least.

Anytime between now and the 1st, although I did wonder if he was going to talk to them before, during or immediately after he does something with the NK problem. :groucho:

Senators to attend North Korea briefing at White House

By Burgess Everett

04/21/17 02:13 PM EDT

Top Trump administration officials will brief all 100 senators next week about North Korea's provocative behavior, according to guidance sent to lawmakers Friday.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats will meet with senators at the White House on Wednesday to bring them up to speed on North Korea and U.S. policy toward the isolated nation.

The briefing had been originally scheduled to occur at the Senate, but instead senators must go to the White House, according to a notice sent to Capitol Hill.

No congressional staffers will be allowed in the members' briefing.

In addition to discussing North Korea's belligerent behavior, lawmakers are also likely to question the administration on its response.

White House officials had said earlier this month that the United States was quickly sending an aircraft carrier to the region after a North Korean missile test, but later backtracked after the carrier was spotted thousands of miles away from its expected location near North Korea.

This article from Politico says no congressional staffers will be allowed.

My first thought was upon reading the above was that even with it being limited to the members of the Senate, how fast do you suppose the leaking would start?

As to that back handed "go ahead" from Beijing, as I said earlier, taking out operating nuclear facilities only ensures a huge mess. And such a rapier like action is only going to force Kim to start shooting stuff at Seoul and points south and east. Limited strikes are only going to make Kim go all out because that's what he's said he'll do. If he doesn't he looks weak to the very people he's been literally holding at gunpoint to run the place and those he's having hold the guns.

Beijing thinks its being cute by giving a wink and a nod to the US instead of dealing with this mess of their making themselves. IMHO they are very wrong and the mess they're hoping to avoid while the US, Japan and South Korea are stuck in the mud of this mess that they believe they can get further advantage from is instead going to drag them in like a black hole.

"Limited strikes" on day one hour one would have to be all of North Korea's air defense network, every offensive missile site we know of and every artillery site within range of Seoul.

That's going to generate a Shitstorm no one's seen for a generation and that's including the Middle East since the 1990s.

IMHO Xi make some "promises" he never intended to fully act upon, expecting Trump to be satisfied with it and gain time.

Trump however is holding Xi to whatever time table might have been discussed or "understood". Now Xi is in CYA mode and Kim is likelier than not even more skittish now on top of that.

What Are North Korea’s Chemical-Weapon Capabilities?

By Cindy Vestergaard
@CeeVestergaard
24th April, 2017
17:32 AEDT

Since Malaysian authorities identified the nerve agent VX as the cause of death in the assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of North Korean's Kim Jong Un, concerns have been raised over the state's chemical weapons capabilities. Earlier this month in parliament, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe raised the possibility of North Korean sarin-tipped missiles. So what are North Korea's capabilities?

Unlike its missile and nuclear programs, which North Korean leaders proudly parade and test, Pyongyang denies it possesses chemical weapons. North Korea is not a state party to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which bans the production, possession and use of chemical weapons. It therefore has never had to declare its facilities, nor had inspectors on the ground. Consequently, what little public information there is available on potential North Korean capabilities and stocks is predominantly reliant on testimonials from North Korean defectors, reports by intelligence agencies and the occasional sound bite from government officials.

According to an oft-cited 2009 report by International Crisis Group (ICG), North Korea established a chemical department in the Ministry of Defence in 1954. The initial focus was on developing a defensive capability (such as gas masks and antidotes), until an offensive program could be established. In 1961, Kim Il Sung issued a 'chemicalisation' declaration to establish an independent chemical industry with dual civilian and military uses and in 1980 reportedly told the Central Military Committee of the Korean Worker's Party that it would be 'effective to produce poison gas and germ weapons for use in combat'.

Whether Pyongyang already had the ability to independently produce chemical weapons by then depends on the source. As discussed in the ICG report, some South Korean and American estimates agree that China and the Soviet Union transferred training and technical information in the 1960s, some of it potentially originating from Imperial Japan's program in Manchuria. One South Korean report also suggested the Soviets provided small amounts of mustard and nerve agents to Pyongyang in 1966, while a former DPRK military attaché in Berlin reportedly acquired 'technical know-how' from the East German government in the late 1970s. A report from the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in the early 1990s stated the North had acquired defensive chemical weapons capabilities by 1979 and then moved on to develop an offensive program.

In January 1987, South Korea's Minister of Defence Lee Ki Baek told the Korea Herald that the North had stockpiled 180-250 metric tonnes of chemical weapons, including mustard and nerve agents. The inventory was suspected to be the same two years later. By 1992, estimates jumped dramatically when the South Korean Agency for National Security Planning (now the National Intelligence Service) claimed there were six chemical weapons storage centres in North Korea containing close to 1000 tonnes of material each, some of which was kept in artillery pieces. It also claimed that the North had the capacity to produce another 5500 tonnes annually (plus 2200 pounds of biological weapons). Since the mid-1990s estimates have been steady and invariable, putting the stockpile at between 2500 and 5000 metric tonnes, with accounts from defectors leaning towards the higher end. Maximum capacity is cited at 12,000 tonnes. Nerve, choking, blood and blister agents are all suspected to be part of North Korea's chemical weapons program. It has also been noted there had been no public indications that DPRK produces binary chemical agents until the VX allegations in February.

Since Jane's Defence Weekly quoted a Western source in January 1989 that North Korea had assembled the world's third-largest chemical weapons arsenal (after the Soviet Union and US), the ranking has stuck. The claim was alarming, suggesting a growing program, but the 1980s estimate of a couple hundred tonnes would not have placed North Korea even in the top five of the world's largest possessors. After ratifying the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Moscow declared 39,967 metric tonnes of chemical weapons and Washington 28,577 tonnes to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

South Korea signed the CWC in 1993, ratified it in 1997 and began eliminating its stockpile in 1999. By 2008, it had eliminated its entire stockpile – only the second country to do so under the CWC. Despite the milestone and its leadership in the global elimination of chemical weapons, Seoul has never made a public announcement regarding its former program, requiring instead the OPCW to refer to it as 'another State Party' or 'an unnamed State Party.'

To this end, it is just as difficult to find any information publicly available about South Korea's program, estimated at 3126 metric tonnes. It likely began around the same time as North Korea's. Throughout the 1980s, the US suspected South Korea of having a chemical weapons program and regularly listed ROK in its annual intelligence assessments on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, although these reports were (and remain) heavily redacted. In recognising the 2008 milestone, the US Ambassador to the OPCW Eric Javits stated that 'quietly and without the public recognition it rightly deserves, a State Party completed the destruction of its entire chemical weapons stockpile becoming the second State Party to do so, and before its deadline'.

As Russia, the US and other countries dismantle aspects of their chemical weapons programs, North Korea's ranking goes up. But the precise figures are unknown, as is much of the North's capabilities, including its delivery systems. In light of Malaysian authorities claiming VX was the cause of Kim Jong Nam's death along with heightened tensions surrounding DPRK's nuclear and missile program, there is an urgent need for international investigation.

Surprisingly, Malaysian authorities have not shared samples with the OPCW. Without third-party confirmation it is difficult to know whether it was in fact a demonstration of the North's chemical weapons capabilities or even if it was VX. Unlike Syria, where the OPCW has been able to confirm the use of chemical weapons, the case of chemical assassination remains unnecessarily mysterious.

On April 2009, the world will commemorate 20th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention. By now, the standard practice should be one of transparency and international due process.

President Trump to Host Unusual Meeting With UN Security Council

by Andrea Mitchell

President Trump will host members of the United Nations Security Council at the White House Monday, a highly unusual meeting made even more startling because of his harsh criticism of the international institution during the campaign and since taking office.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley is serving this month as the President of the Security Council, a role that rotates each month among the five Permanent members: the U.S., Great Britain, France, China and Russia. There are 15 members of the group — but the others, right now including Egypt, Japan, Senegal, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Ukraine and Uruguay are non-voting members.

Haley will be attending before the group returns to New York for scheduled Security Council meetings on Tuesday.

The president's budget outline proposed deep cuts in the U.S. contribution to the UN, which could dramatically impair its peacekeeping functions around the world.

Other high profile UN functions include refugee relief and vetting of refugee visa applicants to the U.S, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna — the weapons inspectors who monitor Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal.

Diplomatic sources told NBC News the ambassadors are expecting to have coffee at Blair House — also known as the The President's Guest House — with members of Congress Monday morning and then go to the White House to meet with the President and have lunch.

North Korea will inevitably be a major point of discussion.

China abstained on a UN resolution last week condemning the latest missile test — instead of vetoing it — a symbolic gesture. But Beijing has so far resisted tougher action.

The Trump administration could unilaterally impose much tougher banking sanctions against North Korea if it wanted to — similar to the Obama administration's past sanctions on Iran — for instance blocking all foreign banks who deal with North Korea from trading in dollars or banking in the U.S. That would be a direct hit on China's financing of the regime in Pyongyang.

So far, however, the Trump White House has not chosen that route but has repeatedly said "all options are on the table," implying military action was possible.

Many experts, including former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, have discounted the viability of preemptive military strikes given the proximity of millions of people in Seoul and 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea, all within artillery range of North Korea if it were to retaliate.

This all comes as an American citizen, a Korean-American accounting instructor, was detained Sunday at the airport in Pyongyang while trying to leave the country after having been there for a month.

The State Department has reached out to Sweden's embassy, the protectorate for the U.S. in North Korea, to try to obtain his release.

Do many of you still consider a "tussle" with the norks a likelihood? I just bought a lot more preps and have 3 e-shopping baskets going on different sites. I'm trying to get a feel before spending even more.

I'd say getting much more likely.

At a minimum I'd make sure your car has a full tank in case stuff goes "real" and everyone freaks out, justified or not.

Beyond that I don't know what to tell you. Being in earthquake country I've always kept enough to keep me going for at least a week (and often more) if bugged in. Bugging out is a whole different and dynamic topic for another thread.

DPRK vows to continue developing nuclear weapons for self-defense

Source:Xinhua Published: 2017/4/24 18:28:07

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Monday it will continue developing nuclear weapons for self-defense against military threat from the United States.

The Korean Workers' Party's official daily Rodong Sinmum said in a commentary that the US move to dispatch a nuclear carrier strike group to the Korean Peninsula is dangerous.

"This is an undisguised military blackmail against the DPRK and a dangerous action that plunges the peninsula into the touch-and-go situation," it said.

"Steadfast are the Korean army and people's will and resolve to annihilate the invaders to the last one and totally round off the showdown with the US by bolstering up their nuclear deterrent for self-defense in every way," it added.

The DPRK has intensified its condemnation of the United States recently, vowing to retaliate with nuclear weapons amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

"It is a wicked design of the US to shake the DPRK's will for increased nuclear deterrent through intensive military threat and blackmail and then realize its ambition for 'the north's dismantlement of nukes,'" said the newspaper.

"Such threat may startle a jellyfish, but can never work on the DPRK. The US had better recognize this," it said.

US President Donald Trump said recently Washington was sending an "armada" to the Korean Peninsula to check attempts by the DPRK to conduct more nuclear and missile tests.

Speculations are high that Pyongyang would conduct another nuclear or missile test around April 25, which will mark the 85th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army.

Border residents fearful after reports of upcoming N.Korea nuclear test

By Liu Xin in Yanji Source:Global Times Published: 2017/4/24 15:18:39

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump on Monday discussed bilateral ties and the situation on the Korean Peninsula in a phone conversation, promising close contact to allow the prompt exchange of views on major issues of common concern.

China strongly opposes actions that violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, Xi said, adding that China hopes that the parties concerned will exercise restraint and avoid actions that aggravate tensions on the peninsula, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xi noted that if the parties shoulder their due responsibilities and meet each other halfway, they can solve North Korea's nuclear issue and achieve denuclearization, Xinhua said.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are mounting, with South Korean and US media outlets reporting that North Korea is preparing for its sixth nuclear test on Tuesday, the 85th anniversary of the founding of its military.

North Korea has reportedly evacuated citizens living near the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site, where it conducted the fifth nuclear test in September 2016.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Sunday that the UN Security Council will hold meetings on the North Korea nuclear issue on Friday, which may be North Korea's excuse for its latest provocation.

nana note: ^^^^ Since Trump is having the permanent SC members at the WH today, will they still hold a meeting Friday?

Amid these tensions, life in Chinese border cities goes on as normal though residents expressed worries about what will come next on the peninsula.

A resident of Yanji, Northeast China's Jilin Province surnamed Guo told the Global Times on Monday that she is worried about reports of upcoming nuclear tests.

Yanji is the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and is located just 10 kilometers from the border of China and North Korea.

"We could feel the earth quake during their last nuclear test, and it will come again soon? Seniors and children will panic," said Guo.

The Punggye-ri nuclear test site is roughly 100 kilometers from the Chinese border and many cities, including Yanji and Tumen in Jilin felt seismic activity during the fifth test.

A primary school in Yanji evacuated its students after the test in September 2016, news portal, sohu.com reported.

A resident of Dandong, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, which is also near the North Korean border, told the Global Times that he worries about Changbai Mountain erupting due to man-made earthquakes.

The mountain straddles the border between the countries.

The resident, surnamed Zhang, also mentioned that if the situation deteriorates severely, there may be a flood of North Korean refugees across the border.

A Yanji resident also surnamed Zhang told the Global Times that he worries about the possible pollution risks brought by North Korean nuclear tests.

"They [the North Koreans] are now short of everything - from food to energy as well as technology. How can we know that their nuclear test will not cause pollution to the air, soil and especially groundwater?" said Zhang.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a press conference after North Korea's fifth nuclear test in September that China's Environmental Protection Ministry will monitor radiation along the China-North Korea border to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens.

Another Yanji resident Li Guowei, 54, told the Global Times that "this is not first time we have heard this news and it won't be the last time. Our lives have to go on."

Li said that despite the trouble North Korea has made, he has some sympathy for the North Korean people who want to protect their country, but he said "their hands are tied by reality."

"They have backbone but this could not help them to develop the economy," said Li.

The Global Times reporter happened to see a group of North Koreans checking into a hotel in Yanji and a hotel staff member confirmed with the Global Times that there are delegations from North Korea visiting the region regularly for business or to see relatives.

Yanbian has a large population of ethnic Koreans. About 70 percent of Jilin's 1 million ethnic Koreans live there. It is also a gathering place for South Korean students and businesses.

To this day, i can't understand why ANY US citizen would be in NK. Especially the past two weeks!
A professor on a relief mission = Libtard. As far as i'm concerned, the US will do nothing for your stupid a$$. Let the good libs at the UN work on your release if you get into a jam.

Were the Germans who risked everything to hide and help the Jews that faced inhiliation from Hitler libtards? What's the difference between Hitler and Kim Jung Un? The people who live in NK are trapped there. They are suffering and dying. It isnt their fault. They live in an isolated world and know no different than the propaganda they've been fed. Just because you wouldn't have the bravery or compassion to face such odds to help a stranger, doesn't mean there aren't other people who are.

Thank God there were people who hid the Jews. Hundreds of thousands were saved because they were hid or smuggled out. Thank God there are those who go to NK to smuggle them out and help them survive. It made the difference to those people, and it will make a difference to the future generations who live because one person survived.

Now the ones that go over there just because they can or to "sightsee" or hike where they shouldnt be, absolutely. They are stupid. But those who know the risks and are doing so to help someone else, that's one brave person.

Japanese demand for nuclear shelters, purifiers surges as North Korea tension mounts

Sales of nuclear shelters and radiation-blocking air purifiers have surged in Japan in recent weeks as North Korea has pressed ahead with missile tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

A small company that specializes in building nuclear shelters, generally under people's houses, has received eight orders in April alone compared with six orders during a typical year.

The company, Oribe Seiki Seisakusho, based in Kobe, western Japan, also has sold out of 50 Swiss-made air purifiers, which are said to keep out radiation and poisonous gas, and is trying to get more, said Nobuko Oribe, the company's director.

A purifier designed for six people sells for 620,000 yen ($5,630) and one designed for 13 people and usually installed in a family-use shelter costs 1.7 million yen ($15,440).

Concerns about a possible gas attack have grown in Japan after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a parliament session this month that North Korea may have the capacity to deliver missiles equipped with sarin nerve gas.

"It takes time and money to build a shelter. But all we hear these days, in this tense atmosphere, is that they want one now," Oribe said. "They ask us to come right away and give them an estimate."

Another small company, Earth Shift, based in Shizuoka prefecture, has seen a tenfold increase in inquiries and quotes for its underground shelters, Akira Shiga, a sales manager at the company said. The inquiries began gradually increasing in February and have come from all over Japan, he said.

EVACUATION DRILLS

North Korean missiles have fired with increasing frequency. Last month, three fell into waters within Japan's exclusive economic zone, some 300-350 kilometers off the coast of northern Akita prefecture.

The Japanese government on Friday urged local governments to hold evacuation drills in case of a possible missile attack, heightening a sense of urgency among the public.

Some orders for the shelters were placed by owners of small-sized companies for their employees, and others by families, Oribe said. A nuclear shelter for up to 13 people costs about 25 million yen ($227,210) and takes about four months to build, he said.

The shelter his company offers is a reinforced, air-tight basement with an air purifier that can block radiation as well as poisonous gas. The room is designed to withstand a blast even when a Hiroshima-class nuclear bomb exploded just 660 meters away, Oribe said.

North Korea said on Sunday it was ready to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier to demonstrate its military might, in the latest sign of rising tension in the region.

The United States ordered the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters off the Korean peninsula in response to mounting concern over the reclusive state's nuclear and missile programmes.

In Japan's previous experience with sarin gas in 1995, members of a doomsday cult killed 12 people and made thousands ill in attacks on Tokyo subways.

USS submarine set to join USS Carl Vinson in drills near S. Korea

2017/04/24 22:16

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- A U.S. submarine is set to join the USS Carl Vinson in drills near the Korean Peninsula, South Korean military officials said Monday.

"The nuclear-powered submarine USS Michigan will enter the waters off the peninsula soon or later to jointly conduct drills with the USS Carl Vinson," a military official told Yonhap News Agency.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is expected to arrive in the East Sea later in the week amid growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

As the U.S. has directed the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and submarine at the same time for joint drills near South Korea, it is interpreted as a stern warning against any provocations by the North.

Security experts have expressed concerns that Pyongyang may conduct its sixth nuclear test or test-fire an inter-continental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland ahead of a key anniversary on Tuesday.

North Korea said Monday its "precise and advanced" nuclear weapons capable of striking U.S. military bases in Asia-Pacific areas and the U.S. homeland are fully prepared to be fired from launchers on the eve of the anniversary of the foundation of North Korea's military.

N. Korea defense chief says deployment is over to strike U.S.

2017/04/24 21:52

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's defense chief said Monday that "precise and advanced striking means" have already been deployed to strike the United States and its followers.

Pak Yong-sik, minister of armed forces, made the comment in a key meeting on the eve of the anniversary of the foundation of North Korea's military, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

"Our nuclear weapons capable of striking U.S. military bases in Asia-Pacific areas and the U.S. homeland are fully prepared to be fired from launchers," the North's defense chief said.

He said if the enemy forces move to make a military attack on the North despite its repeated warnings, a strong preemptive strike will wipe out the enemies' headquarters from this planet.

The North's latest bellicose remarks come on the same day that U.S. President Donald Trump held his first phone conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for closer cooperation in curbing North Korea's nuclear program.

Last year, Pyongyang conducted two nuclear tests and more than 20 missile tests, escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the region.

No unusual movement in N.K. ahead of military anniversary: Seoul

2017/04/24 11:10

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's unification ministry said Monday that there has been no unusual movement in North Korea as Pyongyang is set to mark the 85th anniversary of the creation of its military this week.

North Korea will celebrate the founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army (KPA) on Tuesday amid speculation that it may conduct its sixth nuclear test or launch a long-range missile.

"When it comes to the anniversary, there has been no unusual signs in North Korea," Lee Duk-haeng, ministry spokesman, told a regular press briefing.

North Korea's state media called for showing allegiance to its leader Kim Jong-un ahead of the KPA anniversary. The country usually holds big military events or parades on anniversaries in which their final numbers end in a five or a zero.

Tensions between the United States and North Korea have heightened as Pyongyang has vowed to respond to Washington's possible preemptive strike with nuclear attacks.

North Korea unveiled what appeared to be three types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in a show of force at a military parade held on April 15, the 105th birthday of late state founder Kim Il-sung.

The U.S. Navy strike group, including aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, is expected to arrive near the Korean Peninsula this week after conducting joint drills with Japanese destroyers in waters off the Philippines.

The Rodong Sinmun, the organ of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, warned that its military is ready to "sink" the carrier "with a single strike" if needed.

This.
Times a million.
I want those people to go free!

Thank you. I have enough to keep us for about a year, but there are the little things my kids like that I am waiting until the last minute to stock up on, things that don't keep well long term.

President Trump will speak with our Senators on North Korea on the 26th along with the Secretary of State, Defense Secretary, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Intelligence Director. Hmmmm. I can think of a couple or so ways this could go....

Heard this on FOX - President Trump was calling all 100 Senators to this special meeting.

The White House will hold a briefing for senators with its “four principals” on North Korea as the administration considers its options for dealing with saber-rattling from Pyongyang.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will attend the meeting planned for April 26, the White House said in an advance schedule.

hmmm---April 26.

There's that date again.

Do many of you still consider a "tussle" with the norks a likelihood? I just bought a lot more preps and have 3 e-shopping baskets going on different sites. I'm trying to get a feel before spending even more.

I've thought about your concerns.
My strategy is much different than most you have seen.
After basic preps, my concern is for my local community self defense and support groups, ie, people.
Mechanic, medical person, electrician, IT person...this can form mutual defense and aid network , quickly and with almost no infrastructure support.
What do you know, what can you offer?
Do you even know your neighbors. How well?
I do not think a war is imminent..but getting close enough for one to pay closer attention to their news sources and preps..
IMHO, if war happens, it will come quickly.

My thoughts are all over the place about NK. I kinda see China playing "good cop" and using the US in the "bad cop" role. This pressures little pudgy buddy in the direction they want him to go - negotiations to de-nuclearize. It HELPS that Trump has the reputation he does among the media and proggie-marxists; the general message getting out is "the man is unpredictable"... so that would help China get an audience with "his hautiness".

None of the countries surrounding the comic-book kingdom want anything to actually happen of military nature - there just aren't any positive benefits and lots & lots of "fallout" - yeah, take that both ways.

On the other hand, everyone is tired of this game that gets played over & over of rediculous threats and claims of nuke progress and prowess. Remember that NK DOES have two sats that perhaps they believe are capable of a High Altitude EMP - so they DO THINK they could take down the DC power grid; and of course there are cyber weapons both in NK and Iran to be concerned about. Whether those sats are what they think are or not - it's something to consider; whether they're capable of inflicting that kind of damage or not - it's something to be prepared for. I'm in the "I don't think anyone knows for sure" camp about that.

Those of us in CONUS have a lot less to worry about than SKorea and Japan and China. Supply-chain disruptions are most likely. Perhaps NK could get some missiles off; perhaps they're accuracy has improved; lots of "perhaps" there too.

It appears as though there is a clear channel of communications between China and US, facilitating very fine-tuned coordination too. This is a good thing, IMO. But it's also tentative and delicate - and the possibility that things could go sideways and someone's nose get out of joint does exist. I think both sides are working pretty well together (so far) to see that this doesn't happen. I haven't forgotten Russia's concern about Vladisvostock... but I don't see them getting actively involved unless asked or a worst-case scenario develops.

So, I'm not that worried about a foreign power & actual war conditions in CONUS. I think life here will just continue crappening the way it's been for awhile now. The domestic problems - antifa, et al - are a much more immediate threat on my scale than a foreign invasion/war. I continue working on the to-do list that was already mapped out at the farm and the only prepping I'm thinking might need to happen, would be a purchase from Shane since I've not considered needing equipment to let me know if it's safe to plant in any "after" scenario - assuming I'm not dust in the wind.

Housecarl - there's lots to think about in your post. That's very helpful; many thanks.

I don't see a UN Security council meeting being called in a month or so to draft an agenda for a Special Committee, to be appointed by September, 2017, to consider sanctions and issue stern warnings.
This level of activity, meetings, phone calls, military movements, disinformation...cannot go on much longer.

Since when do we tell anyone where any Ohio-class is going?

ETA: Michigan is an SSGN aka cruise-missile sub. Notable on several levels, in that first: it's not a SLBM carrier, so hopefully that's one less thing to worry about (not that I think there aren't any other Ohios in the area). Second: that it signals that T-Time is approaching. An SSGN is just the kind of platform to deal with Li'l Kim, and the arrival of such a weapon system in that area, at this particular time, is unlikely to be coincidental.

With the ballistic missile treaties limiting # of missiles, 4 Ohio class SSBNs were converted to guided missile subs.
The implied message (from the Syria missile strike also) is a large scale Tomahawk cruise missile attack on North Korea.

Instead of this being one less thing to worry about, it is a significant dot and shows that the US has the ability to strike North Korea.

Lots of posturing, but with followthru options. NK must now know that if they do or are about to test a nuke, their nuke site will be hammered with ground penetrating bunker busters or a few rods-of-God (carbide telephone poles dropped from space)... but with 10-minute warning that if they respond militarily, they will be utterly hammered along DMZ artty-missile sites and troop assemblages, as well as leadership-hunting by cruise missiles directed by SFs. Bet they have already been "tagged"

Likely a few generals have been nicely invited to pre-empt, as well.

My point was that, since they've (apparently explicitly) send a cruise missile platform to Korea, the possibility of using SLBMs is reduced and therefore one less thing to worry (much) about. I think the presence of the SSGN *increases* the possibility that the US is going to take an active hand in North Korea's affairs in the near future.

Trump: UN Security Council must ready new sanctions on N.Korea
ByJPOST.COM STAFF, REUTERS
April 24, 2017 19:46

President Trump called for the UN to impose new sanctions on North Korea following a month of harsh statement from his administration that signaled to North Korea to scale back its nuclear activity.

The UN Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea amid escalating tensions over its missile and nuclear programs, US President Donald Trump said on Monday ahead of a lunch with ambassadors from countries on the UN council.

Trump, speaking to reporters, said the council also failed to act in response to a recent Syrian chemical weapons attack, which he called a "great disappointment."

"The status quo in North Korea is also unacceptable and the council must be prepared to impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile programs," Trump said.

"This is a real threat to the world, whether we want to talk about it or not. North Korea is a big world problem and it's a problem that we have to finally solve," he said.

Trump's firm statement concerning North Korea's alarming nuclear activity further strengthens the message top officials in his administration have been relaying in the past month in reaction to North Korea's defiant progress with its nuclear program.

On April 17, Vice President Mike Pence paid an official visit to demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the highly-fortified border between the two Koreas. Pence then said that in dealing with the ever pressing need to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, "all options are on the table," alluding to the the possibility of the US reacting assertively should North Korea not scale back its activity.

A day prior to Pence's visit, North Korea attempted to carry out a missile test and failed, with the missile exploding upon launch according to South Korea and the US. CNN has sited US officials as saying that the missile in question did not have intercontinental capabilities.

Pyongyang's increased military action as well as it nuclear armament and recent series of nuclear experiments have played a significant role in bringing Pence to the region. While standing along the DMZ, Pence had described the border as a "frontier of freedom" and also said that the US "has always sought peace through strength and my message here today... standing with the courageous soldiers from the Republic of Korea is a message of resolve."

Pence's words echoed those of US National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster, who on April 16 said that when it came to the North Korean nuclear program, "all of our options are on the table, undergoing refinement and further development." McMaster also noted that while the US hoped not to be forced to exercise its military capabilities in the region, he believed the "problem is coming to a head" and that the US is currently working on options for a variety of courses of action for US President Donald Trump to choose from should "this pattern of destabilizing behavior" continue.

Stressing the US's lack of tolerance for North Korea's nuclear activity, Pence also said during his visit that the US "era of strategic patience" was over.
