I also read that the tunnel may now be sealed, another source for confirmation. My guess is 24-72 hours before the test. I also think these satellite updates are reported 24 hours old for security reasons. If true, we may get a test later tonight or Sunday night.

North Korea threatens Australia, Julie Bishop with nuclear strike

North Korea has bluntly warned Australia of a possible nuclear strike if Canberra persists in "blindly and zealously toeing the US line".

AAP on April 23, 2017, 6:22 am

North Korea's state new agency (KCNA) on Saturday quoted a foreign ministry spokesman castigating Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop after she "spouted a string of rubbish" against the the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"If Australia persists in following the US moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK and remains a shock brigade of the US master, this will be a suicidal act of coming within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of the DPRK," the report said.

"The Australian foreign minister had better think twice about the consequences to be entailed by her reckless tongue-lashing before flattering the US."

Ms Bishop said on Thursday that the sanctions were to send "the clearest possible message to North Korea, that its behaviour will not be tolerated, that a nuclear-armed North Korea is not acceptable to our region".

She also urged China to step up pressure on North Korea to stamp out its belligerent and illegal behaviour.

In the report from Pyongyang, the North Korean ministry spokesman accused the Australian government of "blindly and zealously toeing the US line" and said Ms Bishop had "better think twice" about the consequences of her "reckless tongue-lashing".

US Vice-President Mike Pence is in Australia and the threat of North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles programs were high on the agenda in talks with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

MSDF destroyers, U.S. aircraft carrier strike group kick off joint exercises in Western Pacific
by Jesse Johnson

Apr 23, 2017

The Maritime Self-Defense Force kicked off joint drills with the U.S. Navy’s Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and its escorting vessels in the Western Pacific Ocean on Sunday, the Defense Ministry said, as the carrier strike group steamed toward the Korean Peninsula.

The MSDF destroyers Samidare and Ashigara, which departed the Sasebo naval base in Nagasaki Prefecture on Friday morning, were taking part in the exercises amid concerns of potential missile and nuclear tests by North Korea this week .

An MSDF spokesman told The Japan Times on Sunday that the drill was not based on any specific combat scenario and that “no particular country was in mind” when planning and conducting the drill.

The MSDF destroyers will practice cruising in tactical formation and test communications procedures with U.S. ships in the drill, the official said.

“The MSDF always looks for opportunities to conduct joint drills with the U.S. Navy, and we consider this good timing” since the Vinson is coming to the Western Pacific, said the official, who declined to be named.

In Washington late Saturday, the White House also announced that U.S. President Donald Trump was to hold telephone talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe early Sunday. Trump was also scheduled to speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping over the phone later in the day.

North Korea was likely to be one of the main subjects of the talks.

MSDF destroyers held joint drills with the Vinson twice last month in the East China Sea, but tensions with nuclear-armed Pyongyang have hit a fever pitch as the isolated country prepares to mark the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army on Tuesday.

That anniversary comes less than two weeks after the North staged a massive military parade in Pyongyang to celebrate the 105th anniversary of founder Kim Il Sung’s birth. The North has historically marked important anniversaries with provocative events such as missile launches or nuclear tests.

On Saturday, the Vinson-led strike group was expected to arrive in the Sea of Japan “within a matter of days,” U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said.

“Our expectation is that they will be in the Sea of Japan, in position, in a matter of days, before the end of this month,” Pence said during a joint news conference in Sydney with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Days earlier, there had been widespread confusion over the whereabouts of the strike group. The navy said it had initially been scheduled to depart Singapore for port calls in Australia, but was rerouted on April 8, reportedly toward waters off the Korean Peninsula as a demonstration of force to the North.

Trump boasted of the strike group in an interview earlier this month with the Fox Business Network, where he described it as “an armada.”

“We are sending an armada. Very powerful,” he said. “We have submarines. Very powerful. Far more powerful than the aircraft carrier. That I can tell you.”

The voyage from Singapore to the Sea of Japan was speculated as taking more than a week.

But photos posted to the U.S. Navy’s website on April 15 showed the carrier transiting the Sunda Strait, the passage between the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java — some 5,600 km from South Korea. It was later revealed that the strike group had in fact been completing a training exercise with the Australian navy.

The White House has denied that it offered misleading information on the whereabouts of the Vinson. Pence told the news conference, which was livestreamed online, that the decision to dispatch the Vinson to the waters off the Korean Peninsula “was set into motion some time ago.”

On Friday, the U.S. Navy revealed the approximate location of the Vinson in a statement announcing that a pilot of a fighter jet operating from the carrier was forced to eject in the Celebes Sea, south of the Philippines.

Third U.S. citizen detained in North Korea: sources

2017/04/23 12:59

SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- A former Korean-American professor was arrested in North Korea last week, becoming the third U.S. citizen to be detained by the communist country as of late, according to sources Sunday.

The U.S. citizen, identified only by his surname Kim, was arrested by North Korean authorities on Friday at Pyongyang International Airport on his way out of the country, said the sources, who asked not to be named.

Kim, a former professor at the Yanbian University of Science and Technology in his late 50s, has been engaged in aid and relief programs to North Korea.

He reportedly was in the North for about a month to discuss relief activities. The reason for his arrest was not clear.

The detainment is the latest in a series of American nationals being arrested in North Korea. Two other U.S. citizens -- college student Otto Warmbier and Korean-American pastor Kim Dong-chul -- are also currently detained in the North after being sentenced to long prison terms for what Pyongyang calls subversive acts against the country.

Ahn Chan-il, director of the World North Korea Research Center in Seoul, said that the North "seems to be intending to use professor Kim as leverage in negotiations" amid the current bad relations between the two countries.

The National Intelligence Service, South Korea's spy agency, said it "was not aware" of Kim's arrest.

Since 2009, over 10 U.S. citizens have been detained in North Korea on charges of anti-state and other unspecified crimes. The widespread view has been that Pyongyang uses the detentions as bargaining chips in its negotiations with Washington.

U.S. forces in Korea to hold drill for evacuation of noncombatants in June
2017/04/23 11:11

SEOUL April 23 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. Forces Korea plans to hold an exercise for the evacuation of noncombatant U.S. citizens from South Korea in June, military sources said Sunday.

The regular Courageous Channel practices operations for a safe exit of the 230,000 Americans in case of a conflict. The drill is led by the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command in Daegu, 302 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

Tensions have mounted over North Korea's threat of nuclear and missile tests, and the U.S. dispatch of powerful military assets to South Korea.

The last Courageous Channel was held from Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2016, following the North's fifth nuclear test in September.

The drill was by far the most realistic, with participants flown outside of the peninsula for the first time since 2009, according to the command.

North Korea says ready to strike U.S. aircraft carrier

North Korea says ready to strike U.S. aircraft carrier

By James Pearson and Ju-min Park | SEOUL

North Korea said on Sunday it was ready to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier to demonstrate its military might, as two Japanese navy ships joined a U.S. carrier group for exercises in the western Pacific.

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters off the Korean peninsula in response to rising tension over the North's nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies.

The United States has not specified where the carrier strike group is as it approaches the area. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday it would arrive "within days" but gave no other details.

North Korea remained defiant.

"Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike," the Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, said in a commentary.

The paper likened the aircraft carrier to a "gross animal" and said a strike on it would be "an actual example to show our military's force".

The commentary was carried on page three of the newspaper, after a two-page feature about leader Kim Jong Un inspecting a pig farm.

North Korea will mark the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People's Army on Tuesday.

It has in the past marked important anniversaries with tests of its weapons.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, two of them last year, and is working to develop nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States.

It has also carried out a series of ballistic missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threat is perhaps the most serious security challenge confronting Trump.

He has vowed to prevent the North from being able to hit the United States with a nuclear missile and has said all options are on the table, including a military strike.

WORRY IN JAPAN

North Korea says its nuclear program is for self-defense and has warned the United States of a nuclear attack in response to any aggression. It has also threatened to lay waste to South Korea and Japan.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday North Korea's recent statements were provocative but had proven to be hollow in the past and should not be trusted.

"We've all come to hear their words repeatedly, their word has not proven honest," Mattis told a news conference in Tel Aviv, before the latest threat to the aircraft carrier.

Japan's show of naval force reflects growing concern that North Korea could strike it with nuclear or chemical warheads.

Some Japanese ruling party lawmakers are urging Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to acquire strike weapons that could hit North Korean missile forces before any imminent attack.

Japan's navy, which is mostly a destroyer fleet, is the second largest in Asia after China's.

The two Japanese warships, the Samidare and Ashigara, left western Japan on Friday to join the Carl Vinson and will "practice a variety of tactics" with the U.S. strike group, the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force said in a statement.

The Japanese force did not specify where the exercises were taking place but by Sunday the destroyers could have reached an area 2,500 km (1,500 miles) south of Japan, which would be waters east of the Philippines.

From there, it could take three days to reach waters off the Korean peninsula. Japan's ships would accompany the Carl Vinson north at least into the East China Sea, a source with knowledge of the plan said.

U.S. and South Korean officials have been saying for weeks that the North could soon stage another nuclear test, something the United States, China and others have warned against.

South Korea has put is forces on heightened alert.

China, North Korea's sole major ally which nevertheless opposes Pyongyang's weapons programs and belligerence, has appealed for calm. The United States has called on China to do more to help defuse the tension.

Last Thursday, Trump praised Chinese efforts to rein in "the menace of North Korea", after North Korean state media warned the United States of a "super-mighty preemptive strike".

You know he's a liberal how? He is a Korean American, I know of a number of churches who raise money for aid of this sort; some are liberal and some are very evangelical; and actually the second sort is more likely to venture into such a situation if they really feel that is what their God wants them to do.

And I point out he was leaving the country when grabbed; I do agree that traveling to North Korea right now for any American or European is foolish but we don't know the length of time he had been there, his actual reasons for going on a personal level or what his actual story is.

I would hesitate to put him in the same "class" as idiots like the sports star of the young "tourist" who just seem to go over their for either publicity or a lark.

Some thoughts....(and some may want to lite the "Rant Lantern"...)

- North Korea has conducted 5 test shots and the PTB/MSM continue to question their capabilities. Meanwhile Pakistan has conducted 6 and India 6 of similar and often smaller yields yet both are considered to be nuclear powers and capable of launching and delivering nuclear weapons via missile to neighboring regional countries.

What agenda does this serve? By perpetuating this mantra the last three US administrations have been able to kick this can down the road to today. Arguably that is no longer a viable option.

- "Miniaturized" nuclear warhead for use on missiles...Ok this is where the rant warning is probably deserved....

North Korea is reported to have parallel uranium and plutonium weapons programs. As I've pointed out on numerous occasions, a uranium fueled device is the "easiest" to build as long as you don't mind the inefficiencies of a "gun type" weapon. Those type of weapons are rugged enough to be shot out of artillery pieces and used as ground penetrating "bunker busters" with the technology of the late 1940s through mid 1950s (the Mark 1 "Little Boy" (10,000 pounds) and the W9 artillery shell (850 pounds)). That's well within North Korea's capabilities.

For that matter, the first missile warhead for a US system , the 1600 pound implosion Mark/W7 weapon, was deployed in 1953 on the Honest John rocket and the Corporal ballistic missile as well as a depth charge and aircraft dropped weapon.

Those masses are well within the throw weights of proven and exported North Korean launch systems. So at a minimum all of the neighboring nations to North Korea are under direct threat of nuclear attack using the same standard as applied to Pakistan and India.

- Another minimization of potential threat North Korean weapons might pose has been to deride the estimated yields of their test detonations. First again I point to the small yields achieved by India and Pakistan in their testing. Secondly, anyone dismissing the effects of a 15 to 20 kt weapon on a major metropolitan area thinks his audience is made up of morons.

Blast alone from one such device is enough to disrupt any major metropolitan area for a very long time and have collateral effects far removed from the site of the detonation. And that assumes a "clean weapon" and not one rigged to generate a lot of fallout, a "dirty weapon".

U.S. citizen Kim Sang-duk detained in N. Korea
Kim, a professor at Yanbian University, was arrested leaving the DPRK on Saturday

April 23rd, 2017

Facebook

Kim Sang-duk, a U.S. citizen and professor at the Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST) in Yanji, China, was detained in North Korea on Saturday at Pyongyang’s Sunan airport, a source familiar with the case confirmed to NK News on Sunday.

Chan-Mo Park, current chancellor of the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), said that Kim and his wife had been on his way back to China after teaching a class in International Finance and Management at the university.

“Professor Kim Sang-duk was arrested on the way out of the country yesterday (22nd),” Park told NK News over email. “From what I heard, he is being investigated for the matters that are not tied to the PUST.”

Kim joins two other U.S. citizens in detention there, 22-year-old Otto Warmbier and 62-year-old Kim Dong Chul, both of whom are serving sentences of hard labor of 15 and 10 years respectively.

An earlier report from South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported that Kim is a 50-something Korean-American.

YUST is in Yanji, a Chinese city on the border with North Korea. The university’s website features the profile of professor Kim, describing him as having a masters in accounting.

A YUST document from 2007 lists Kim as having attended Riverside College in California and says he previously taught marketing and economics there.

Both reports say the North Korean side is yet to give any official reason for the detention.

Calls to YUST’s Department of Academic Affairs and Department of Planning on Sunday went unanswered by NK News.

Yanbian University was established by the South Korean Northeast Asia Foundation for Education and Culture in 1992, and has links to the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST) in North Korea’s capital.

Kim was involved in relief and aid programs in the DPRK, the Yonhap report says, and was in-country for a month to discuss these projects.

“We can expect that like before the DPRK will be willing to consider the premature release of the three detained Americans if the U.S. sends a senior figure to Pyongyang,” said Tristan Webb, a senior analyst at NK Pro.

“In the past, the U.S. has secured releases by sending James Clapper (2014), Robert King (2011), Jimmy Carter (2010), and Bill Clinton (2009) – some of these were in a personal capacity, some were as personal envoys of the U.S. President.”

The U.S. State Department spokesperson, when contacted by NK News on Sunday (South Korean time), said they were investigating the reports but had no further information to provide.

Fellow U.S. citizen Warmbier was detained and sentenced for attempting to steal a poster from a room in the Yanggakdo Hotel in Pyongyang in January last year. Kim was sentenced in December 2015 for espionage.

Third American Citizen 'Kim' Detained In North Korea: Report

Kim, former professor had been in North Korea to discuss relief activities. (Representational)
Seoul: North Korea detained a US citizen on Friday as he attempted to leave the isolated country, bringing the total number of Americans held by the isolated country to three.

Korean-American Tony Kim had spent a month teaching an accounting course at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), the university's chancellor, Chan-Mo Park, told news agency Reuters on Sunday.

Mr Kim, who also goes by his Korean name Kim Sang-duk and is in his fifties, was detained by North Korean officials at Pyongyang International Airport as he attempted to leave the country, Mr Park said.

"The cause of his arrest is not known but some officials at PUST told me his arrest was not related to his work at PUST. He had been involved with some other activities outside PUST such as helping an orphanage," Mr Park said.

"I sincerely hope and pray that he will be released soon".

An official at South Korea's National Intelligence Service said it was not aware of the reported arrest.

Mr Kim is listed as an accounting professor on the website of PUST's sister institution in neighbouring China, the Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST). Calls to YUST were not answered.

PUST was founded by evangelical Christians and opened in 2010, with students generally the children of the country's elite.

Its volunteer faculty, many of whom are evangelical Christians, has a curriculum that includes subjects once considered taboo in North Korea, such as capitalism.

North Korea, which has been criticised for its human rights record, has in the past used detained Americans to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations.

North Korea was already holding two Americans.

Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old student, was detained in January last year and sentenced to 15 years of hard labour by a North Korean court for attempting to steal a propaganda banner.

In March 2016, Kim Dong Chul, a 62-year-old Korean-American missionary, was sentenced to 10 years hard labour for subversion. There have been no public appearances of either man since.

The reclusive state is also holding Canadian pastor Hyeon Soo Lim. He was charged with subversion and given a hard labour life sentence in 2015.

Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 15 years hard labour for crimes against the state. He was released two years later.

How would he know it is not a drill??? They don't exactly say "This is not a drill" when they send the messages.

Know what Burrito, i really don't know. I'll just guess from what seems as the posters experience. I have zero on this.

I wonder if this is currently part of the military exercises with the Japanese navy that are going on

No agenda revealed but most certainly these calls being prompted by continuing concerns about #DPRK.

A note from the poster. He states the signal for the Skykings was stronger then usual. His thoughts are the message was out of the Northern Pacific region. Also, the message is not a drill. It's a real deal emergency message. Again, the meaning, who knows.

How would he know it is not a drill??? They don't exactly say "This is not a drill" when they send the messages.

If the "boomers" sortie this will get "real" in very short order...Talk about jumping back to the "bad old days".....

Chinese media: ‘China's intervention not needed when only N.K.’s nuke facilities are hit’

A Chinese state-run media outlet said that if North Korea continues nuclear and missile development, China may not provide military support to China even if the U.S. launches preemptive strike on the North. China and North Korea have agreed to provide military assistance if one of them gets under military attack, and hence the latest report is construed as Beijing’s stern warning against Pyongyang.

If the U.S. launches surgical strikes on North Korea’s nuclear facilities, China will seek diplomatic deterrence but military intervention is not needed, China’s state-run Global Times said on Saturday. However, the daily repeated its previous stance that f the U.S. and South Korean militaries cross the 38th parallel to invade the North and seek to topple the North Korean regime, China should immediately start military intervention.”

With the U.S. and China stepping up pressure on North Korea, U.S. President Donald Trump held calls in succession with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping Sunday morning, and discussed ways to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. President Trump reportedly asked the Japanese and Chinese leaders to extend cooperation to manage the situation wherein signs of North Korea’s sixth nuclear test are mounting. Notably, in his call with Chinese President Xi, President Trump reportedly commended Beijing’s recent efforts to deter the North’s nuclear development and called on Beijing to use more specific measures to pressure the North.

In the premiere of "Born in China, a movie jointly produced by the U.S. and China held at the Chinese embassy in Washington on Friday, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai said that President Trump will visit China in the second half of this year. After President Trump and President Xi held summit at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on April 6 and 7, the two leaders agreed to President Trump’s return visit to China at the earliest date.

And if you thought Fukashima was bad, this sort of a move even with conventional weapons would be BAD.

"Responsibility to protect" with regards to civilians wherever the wind blows comes to immediate mind.

Powell's "you broke it you own it" comment is in full play in regards to North Korea.
